we are planning to start weaning in a couple of weeks. I'd like to try BLW. Anyone else planning to?
If so, what would you start with? Guess the baby rice I bought will stay in the cupboard!

Just back from holiday. Been to CenterParcs for 4 days and then visited my Granny for the weekend. Centerparcs was great fun, went with a friend and her 2 kids (age 3 and 1) so spent the whole time chasing after and entertaining them. I need another holiday now to recover. It has just dawned on me that the days of pre baby relaxing, lazy holidays are gone and holidays are now going to be more active than when at home.

DS and DH (and one of friends kids) caught a stomach bug while away and were sick. DS still isn't right, he's off his food a bit and has been grumpier than usual. I think his teeth are hurting him too, poor little thing.

I'm giving him pureed food but as he's still not quite 5 months he's not getting much, so far he's only had carrot, sweet potato (which he didn't like), pear and apple and baby rice. He also had some jarred food on holiday (ones with just veg in them which hugely limited the choice)
When he gets a bit bigger and can cope with it not all being pureed I'll give him finger foods along side me feeding him.

I've got achy legs too, sore ankles and knees esp first thing in the morning.

Ponka · 18/09/2006 22:54

Thanks Littlepiggie. Dunno Tonton. I'm thinking about it. It sounds good. I was actually wondering about doing a bit of that and a bit of the normal purees etc. God I'm such a middle of the road, liberal, sitter- on the fence in absolutely everything

Oooh Debi that sounds lovely (apart from the stomach stuff). We're just about to book that for next spring. I love it there. It is a lot less relaxing going on holiday with kids though, isn't it?

Went for a job interview today. Don't know if you remeMber but I had a job lined up for october but it fell thorugh. Anyway got myself looking all smart and professional and made a really big effort to impress. And...I think i did imprerss but part of me doesn't want to get it!!! It's a great job but means 45 mins on the tube each day (I'm in London) and it's probably fulltime - maybe 4 days if i push it (like most jobs in my industry). I am definitely destioned to always be a working mum - I think i'm just being lazy (I do NOT think stay-at-homers at all lazy by the way, just me!)...or maybe I'm getting depressed? There's no chance of me being a stay-at-home-mum (big mortgage which was my choice) and to be honest it wouldn't suit me as I'm quite prone to depression and take happy pills to keep me on the straight and narrow. I have the possibility of some freelance work which would allow me to be quite flexible (but boy would the woRk in this case be dull as ditch water!), but of it
course I would then sacrifice the security. And I LOVE security! Porbbaly because dh is a musician. What a rant eh?!

Let ds (22 weeks) play with a plum in his highchair while we were eating are tea, keeps reaching for our feed although not started weaning yet. It got sqashed and smeared everywhere, went stright in the bath. Dont think he ate any but i am sure he will when he is ready. It was very cute though.

angelhunter · 22/09/2006 09:52

Hi I'm new to mumsnet my little girl Georgia was born on 7th April. Since starting solids (Stewed apple and pear and sometimes mixed with baby rice)she now sleeps through the night from about 6-7 till about 6 but doesn't sleep during the day unlesss out walking (in the backpack) or in the car, at home not a chance!!! Still demand feeding just replacing one feed with solids. She rolls from tummy to back but not quite the other way yet. Has discovered the cats though but is surprisinly gentle with them and they are very tolerent with her

2plus2plus1 · 22/09/2006 16:17

I don't have too mcuh to add today except that today is officially the last day of my maternity leave .

Back to work on Wednesday .

tonton · 22/09/2006 17:55

welcome angelhunter!

Anyone bought a highchair yet? I dopn't know what to get - tripp trapp, babydan,....so much choice!! And all so expensive.
Any votes?

littlepiggie · 22/09/2006 19:01

got one from mothercare, sit in it while we eat. Is anyone else waiting till 26 weeks to wean? Feel like i am getting nagged at from everone (inc gp) to start, i shoild have started by now so they say, i let him play with some fruit so far, i think thats enough for now.

Ponka · 22/09/2006 20:39

Welcome Angelhunter.

I'm still hanging on, Littlepiggie but I think I'll start any day. I'm sure he's ready. When I went to have his hip check the health visitor or whoever she was doing it looked shocked when I said I wasn't weaning yet and said, "oh yes, some babies can stretch to 6 months, I guess"! It looks like even the professionals are expecting it!

littlepiggie · 22/09/2006 20:55

lol, how old is ds? Is he a big boy?
Ds is prob over 17lb, weighed 16lb a month ago.
Trying to heng on, only 4 weeks till 26 weeks.
What i am doing though is letting him have a suck of things i am eating if he tried to get it, but thats about it, he is sitting up, and lost the tongue thing and all the rest of it so we are just following his lead. BLW here we come!

2plus2plus1 · 22/09/2006 21:29

DD3 shows no interest in food at all. I walked around with a banana hanging out of my mouth this afternoon, expecting her to grab it & have a go - she didn't even seem to notice it. She is 5 calendar months in 2 days. She is maybe feeding a little more frequently some days but not all the time. We did go through a couple of days where she still seemed hungry after a big feed but couldn't take any more milk (chewing her wrists etc.), discussed that it might be a sign but she hasn't done it since. If she does seem ready before 6 months we will start, but at the moment it looks as though we could be going over the 6 months.

Havn't seen a HV to talk to since 7wks so getting no hastle there. We'll just plod along until she looks ready. I am not going to look at the calendar and say oh 'todays the day', or try to keep up with the Jones'. I'm sure she will tell us when she's ready. Won't she?

Ponka · 22/09/2006 21:33

DS was 7th April so not long now. That's why I'm thinking a couple of week won't make much difference now. He watches us eat longingly. I'm starting to feel guilty! He's on the 50th centile for weight.

Tonton, I have an eastcoast wooden one that's still in use for DS1 because he has ants in his pants and wouldn't stay sitting in a chair. It looks nice but I wish I had a plastic tray. It's so much easier to clean and more hygenic. My parents have a very nice travel one that we borrow a fair bit and to be honest, I like it so much, I wish I had just bought that for home too. Not sure what to do about DS2. I think we'll start him in his bumbo until he can sit well. Triptrap looks v. nice. Have you seen the reviews section for high chairs?

Ponka · 22/09/2006 21:35

Ooooh. Can I just say for the hell of it, too. I've been dying to try that out.

Yes I reckon she will 2plus2.

angelhunter · 23/09/2006 04:17

Haven't got a highchair yet just feed Georgia in her bouncenette. My Mum wants to buy it and we just haven't got round to it.
In the UK is it expected tp wean by 6 months cause in NZ it is only recommended to just start then???
I started early cause she wanted to eat anything I did.
Ponka is your little ones birthday 7 April too?? What time was he/she born?

littlepiggie · 23/09/2006 12:56

It is not recomended to start weaning before 6 months in the UK, Babies need nothing more then breast milk till then, whatever there size.

2plus2plus1 · 23/09/2006 12:57

Until a couple of years ago the advice used to be 4-6 months.

Now it is 'from 6 months', as in NZ. However not even the healthcare professionals can get their story straight and it is not uncommon for HVs to recommend earlier.

I think because it is still relatively new advice it people still think 'my oldest was fine when weaned at 3 1/2 months etc.' so DC will be fine this time. It will just take us time to adjust to the new recommendations - especially when the health professionals are not really supporting them in unity

littlepiggie · 23/09/2006 13:44

Totally agree, was told when ds went for 8 week chack that we would have to wean soon as he was 13lb 1oz, took him to gp who moaned as i was still not weaning him at 20 weeks, telling me he will be hungry.

Ponka · 23/09/2006 20:09

Yes Angelhunter. 10pm. You? and Spots was 7th too but she's not been around for a bit. Oi Spots. Over 'ere!

angelhunter · 25/09/2006 01:47

10:13am
the same has happended here in NZ the change from 4-6 months to now 6 months I only started earlier because she wanted to eat anything i did and its really helped with her sleeping. Just been called up for jury duty, hoping to be allowed off as i will have to put her in child care and leave her with someone else for the first time!! Think i will be a wreck if i have to

DebitheScot · 25/09/2006 12:17

I've got the Mothercare Antigua highchair. Its good coz it reclines a bit (so is useful now when ds is still not quite sitting properly), has 4 different heights and the tray comes off so it'll be good when he's bigger and can sit at the table. And it was reduced from £70 to £50. It could well still be on offer actually.

littlepiggie · 26/09/2006 21:05

started weaning ds today on th blw route, had a good chew on a corrot.

WriggleJiggle · 26/09/2006 21:40

DD is grabbing food out of my hand, so I staarted giving her 'tastes' of things. So far she's had quite a few different things. The peas were not pleasant from the nappy point of view! She hates baby rice - spits it out . Don't think rolling is going to happen for a while.

angelhunter · 26/09/2006 22:09

Grorgia doesn't like baby rice either not even the pear and banana flavoured one. I've even tried mixing it with stewed apple which she does like and that didn't work either. She can almost roll from back to front now but her arm always seams to get in her way - any tips???
