This feeding business is so hard isn't it? I'm now doing mixed feeding and I'm much happier, I FF through the day and early evening and BF through the night, I pump a couple of times during the day to keep up my supply but it is a great compromise. It was a bit of a struggle to get DS to accept the bottle but well worth it.My sister is popping in after lunch and I'm going to ask her to babysit so DP and I can go out for a couple of hours! I haven't had 5 mins to myself since Zack was born apart from the 2 walks DP took him on and a bit of freedom feels great.
Also Zack slept for 5 hours last night woke for a feed then went back for another 2- yippee!!

nixnoo · 29/08/2006 13:07

Anyone else got a tummy tub (bucket like bath thing)? Leo loves his and is so calm in it. He even stood up in it! He braced his feet against the side and pushed, and ended up standing with his back against the side - he looked as surprised as I did!

I settle Leo by putting a sheet under him before I put him down, and wrapping him init a bit, IYSWIM. Also I have just started putting his blankie (fleecy thing with tags my sister bought for him) next to his face while feeding him at night, the snuggling it up to him when I put him down. I'm hoping he will associate it with me. It seems to be working so far.

pinkdolly · 29/08/2006 13:46

hi ladies,

sorry i havent posted in a while. like a lot of you, i'm just too tired.

apologies now for the lacl of capitals, am one-handed typing.

it's been a good few weeks as dh has been home from work, but yesterday he went back so this is the first time on my own with the 3 girls. he'll be back for the weekend so hopefully i'll manage ok.

am still keeping up with the b'feeding, going well, although jasmine does have the odd green poo. which i hear is a sign that she is having too much foremilk.

she is awake from about 7:30pm - 10:30pm and then sleeps till about 3:30/4:00 and then again at about 7:30. so cant really complain. although we are still co-sleeping as she seems to need that attachement.

i'd rather she was happy and slept well in my bed, as opposed to waking upset all the time in her crib, plus i like the special bond (i did the same with my other girls)

Well i have no internet access at home at the moment due to our faulty computer, so will check in on everyone again soon as. hope you are all ok and not too tired or hormornal. bye for now.

usandbump · 29/08/2006 14:21

Hi nixnoo, Zack is 6 weeks, he has had an unsettled couple of weeks and I hope he is beginning to settle down now My sister said yes to the babysitting so we are going out for a couple of hours on Thurs night!!

Nice to hear from you pinkdolly

HumphreysCorner · 29/08/2006 14:24

jane-I bought the Avent electric pump weeks ago and it is fab being able to set your own pump speed. Don't get 6oz out though

pinkdolly-how do you sleep-I mean what position do you sleep in as I have to be sat up to BF Sophie?

FIL has been round to help this man cut our hedge and said I need to take Sophie round to see MIL. As this is never going to happen on my own I said to tell her she is welcome round here anytime. He blanked that comment so I said it again and even though I am out most days all she has to do is phone first to see if I'm in. He ignored that and walked off! Am going to suggest to DH that we call round on Saturday on the way back from town as it is now doing my head in and bringing back painful memories from when DD1 was born

Byee for now

janenevie · 29/08/2006 15:28

pinkdolly, I've not heard that about the green poo?!!?
HC: it was only because Evie slept the whole time I was out so hadn't fed for a while I usually get about 2oz per boob!
I'm thinking of buying a maclaren pushchair as there's 10% off at the mo and our travel system is HUGE! Evies 3 months in 2 weeks so she can use them, anybody had one, any tips?? I'm thinkin the lulu guiness one as I'm a complete label whore and proud!!

Hi everyone

I had 8 hours uninterrupted sleep last night - how good do I feel! DS slept from 8ish last night until just after 6 this morning!! I hope this is the first of many nights like this but who knows?? I have given up the idea of dream feeds as he never takes it - I have tried putting the teat in his mouth etc to stimulate the sucking but it doesn't work!! I am definitely beginning to see that he is a stubborn little boy who will so what he wants, when he wants!

Does anyone have any advice on crib/cot bumpers? I have read somewhere that you are not supposed to use them until babies are 1 year old, but why would they sell crib bumpers when 1 years olds don't sleep in cribs?? Is that true? There were no warnings on the packaging about them only being used for 1 year olds+. Any advice would be appreciated.

nixnoo · 29/08/2006 17:09

I think crib bumpers can be a choking hazard for babies? I asked this question on MN ages ago and the consensus was that they are not good, they also block the LO's view out.

just went for a hour walk, need to nap now.

maewest · 29/08/2006 19:42

Think the main thing with crib bumpers is that babe can get wriggled up against them and could be danger of suffocation, or just getting too hot if their head is in contact (a bit like wearing a hat in bed) as babies need to lose heat from their head. I don't understand what they're for anyway! Dom is getting big in his basket already, so may need to investigate new sleeping arrangements soon.

Had a better day today, went out to bf group at local clinic, need to meet local mums. Dom was youngest there, but bigger than the 3 month old he was lying next too , who he almost clouted by accident whilst waving hands around. Have relaxed about the feeding, he can decide whether he wants it 3 hrly or not, today has been a mix of 3-4 hrs.

Pinkdolly - have heard that about green poo. Dom had greenish tinge yesterday in nappies (god, what glamour parenthood brings ), but I was told only be concerned if they are consistently green (for bf babies, not sure about ff) as it can mean babe is not getting enough nutrients. Think this was because i was forcing the boob down his neck when he wasn't really hungry and he was just snacking on foremilk and not getting to the 'gold top'. Sometimes when he wants to feed v frequently I offer same side for a couple of feeds, so that he gets hindmilk too, also gives other side a chance to 'recharge'.

IamBlossom · 29/08/2006 19:43

Hi everyone.

I have heard that cot bumpers can restrict the flow of air to a baby, if they roll over up against them and it is advised that you don't use them. I did use them both in the crib and cotbed whith DS1 but haven't put it on with Toby, as the midwives in the hospital reiterated that they weren't advised.

Nixnoo, and who ever else was talking about 2 hourly feeds at night - Toby is exactly the same. You can set your watch by him at night it is 2.5 hours to the minute and he stirs, feeds for ten minutes then I put him down and we both go back to sleep. So I can cope with that really. However, this week so far he has wanted to feed hourly during the day which is impossible to do really with DS1 so when the HV came round today I asked her about it - she has suggested that I should do other things when he crys other than put him on the boob - talk to him, use the baby gym, leave him to cry for a bit and do some jobs, returning regularly to reassure him etc. She reckons that after 2 days or so he should get the message - I have to agree, cos this way he never really gets full, and I can't feed/bath/play with DS1/be out and about with out a boob on display if we carry on like this. Had to feed Toby twice at Toddler Craft this morning, rather than play with DS1 and that's no good. So HV left and i thought right, got to get to 4pm before I can feed him again, and he has slept since then! I can't wake him up in fact! Going to have to try soon, or there is no way he will be doing any sleeping tonight....

Sitting here with laptop in front of Eastenders - my friend came round the afternoon and set up my wireless modem/router so I am now WIFI!! Hurray! Had to do it as we are turning what was my office into DS1's new bedroom, so now I can sit on Mumsnet in the front room, much to DH's delight....not.

I have to say that so far...so good in terms of being a Stay at Home Mum of two...I know I've got a long way to go yet but it's not been as horrendous so far as people warned me it might. Remind me I said that when I am on here in tears.

Started my exercise regime today - which involved pushing the double buggy with two stone of DS1 and 11 pounds 6 of Toby (three weeks today) up a considerable hill to DS1's nursery. Jeez I was dripping when we arrived, very attractive. I'm going to try and do that twice a week, and my step video in the front room when DD1 is at nursery, and possibly fit a swim in at some point with the help of the grandparents or a creche. We'll see. 12 pounds to go to get back to pre-pregnancy weight....

Right, soz for humongous post, love to you all and your delicious babes.

morning all - now that I've let Dom set the pace again, he seems to be happy with about every 4 hrs, but does seem to really fill up, even had to offer the 2nd boob last night as he appeared to have done the impossible and emptied the first one (never happened before). His dad has just changed a MONSTER dirty nappy, he's got morning off as we're off to appt this morning for Dom's blood tests. How do I know that he'll start squawking to be fed just as they call our name? Wish me luck.

And diverting a truly hungry baby? Don't think that's really possible... but sometimes think Dom makes all the signs just because he can't think of anything else to do, and sometimes he can be distracted (a bit) but you have to catch him early, and techniques will only work for a bit Good luck to all of you with snacky babies, sure I'll be back on here red-eyed when he has his next growth spurt!

HumphreysCorner · 30/08/2006 09:05

Morning ladies

usandbump-do hope DP is OK and taking it easy-how uspsetting for you all. Lucky you losing weight-I must try harder!((xx))

maewest-here is luck for Dom's tests. There is no way you can distract a hungry baby and anyway, the noise is just so bad you have to give in and feed.

kayzed-didn't know you pumped in the night-gosh, you are good.

Well, we are off into town and me, my mum and DD1 are going for our haircut. Going to have to find somewhere cheaper next time if my hairdresser doesn't contact me (have sent endless texts) as £43 for me and DD1 is killing me (ususally pay £10-50 to my mobile hairdresser). Maternity pay stops before the end of the year so need to be economical.

Have a good day all

hi ladies and bubs Amelia slept last night from 8.30 to 5.45 this morning so very happy about that and also did it the night before last so hoping it could become a regular thing. no doubt it'll all end now as i've told you all!!

i put her down awake and she will go to sleep by herself (i swaddle her) about 50% of the time. I just leave her she's normally quite content, if she starts to cry i'll rock her (in the cot - i don't pick her up - unless its severe of course, I'm not that mean!) and she'll go to sleep. she sleeps in her pram downstairs during the day and in her cot after her bath/ feed at around 7.30/ 8pm. we did this with ds too and it worked quite well.

what are you putting them to sleep in? as i find it hard to know as it still seems quite warm of a night - well in our house anyway! i've just been putting her in a vest/babygro and then swaddling her in a large muslin wrap. Sometimes i put a thin blanket over her as well when i go to bed. She seems warm enough like this although sometimes her hands feel a bit cool to touch.

ds seems to have recovered from his tonsilitis and is back to his normal self. looking forward to his toddler groups starting up again next week as i think he's a bit bored (read as behavour being very challanging) whoever asked there was no talk of him having his tonsils removed when we saw the doc - like you said i don't think they do it as much anymore. i wouldn't have wanted it done anyway as this is the first time he's had it.
have a good day everyone

nixnoo · 30/08/2006 10:43

Sefton went back to waking every 2 hours last night

The outside of our flat is getting painted today but that means I am stuck in the bedroom with the blinds drawn to avoid spectators to my BF

Have my first "sdult business" meeting today since baby, hope my bbrain can perform!!!

superblue · 30/08/2006 10:44

Morning everyone - thanks for the advice about the cot bumpers - it confirms what I thought as the other morning, I woke up to find Joshua had turned himself round in the crib with his face pressed up to the bumper - that is when I thought that maybe there was something wrong!! Why sell crib bumpers if they are dangerous??

Jom- I put Joshua in a babygro and a 1 tog grobag at night - although if it gets really hot again, I think the grobag will be too much. Before I got the grobag, I covered him with a sheet and cell blanket - but these were kicked off within half an hour so he invariably slept with no coverings at all - hence the grobag! His hands are usually cold aswell but there is no way he will keep them covered so as long as the rest of his body is warm, I try not to worry!

Just been to the HV - Joshua is 10lbs 9 at 7 weeks so he is putting on weight despite the fact he is being quite sick at pretty much every feed. HV said it was probably reflux which is what I thought all along - can't wait to tell MIL as she thinks I am making it up! She keeps going on about changing his formula to another brand - HV said not to bother as they are all the same so that might shut her up for a while.

My parents are due anytime so I can hopefully relax for the day and get ahead with the washing whilst they dote on DS!! Taking him out for tea tonight which is the first time we have done that - hope he is ok in the restaurant.

Meant to say-I went to a parents evening at nursery and I swear that me must have been talking about a different child! They said she has never said no and has never thrown a tantrum

On the subject of cot bumpers I used one with DD1 and took it down when we lowered the cot level. Have also got a Baby Jungle one on ready for Sophie when she goes in her cot. It is at the top end and she will sleep at the bottom but have to say you have all worried me about them. Didn't know all this when I had DD1. Ho hum.

morning/afternoon everyone!! ds is now settling at night now. he went to sleep at 9.30 and woke up at 2 for a feed, then at 4 and then at 8.00.

i have a really bad habit of going to bed late, even though i know dd will wake at 7 in the morning, so last night fell asleep at 10.30 and woke at 12 to tidy house and went back to bed at 2 with ds.

ds has just woken and done a big poo(which he loves doing at every opportunity) and gone back to sleep!

IamBlossom · 30/08/2006 12:25

hi everyone.

Re distracting a really hungry baby - I think that that is the point - that he is not actually really hungry when he is asking for it, he has just become accustomed to being plonked on it and now relies on it for comfort. There is no way I could stop him crying if he hadn't fed for 2-2.5 hours, it would be the boob or nothing.

So far so good today, fed him at 8.30am before we went into town to buy DS1 some new shoes x 2 (HOW EXPENSIVE!!!! - did have to get the ones with flashing lights though, couldn't resist) and then he kicked off just as we got home, so that was 2.5 hours, fed him then for about 20 minutes and have just endured about 20 minutes of crying after winding and changing him, but he is now lying in his moses basket seeming quite content with the occasional squawk. Oooh, just checked and he has fallen asleep. SO next feed at 2pm little man, sorry about that...

By the way he HATES his baby gym, screams his head off on it, are they too young still (3 weeks) for stimulation like that? Can't remember when I started using that kind of thing with DS1....

Girlfriends coming from London after lunch for a visit, then got a kid's party to take the boys to later, it's all go!

Byeeee.
