Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
sarahlou1uk · 12/09/2006 15:16

OK Ok I'll go and hang my head in shame

I was given this advice by my hv and mw when I had ds and again this time around with dd. Obviously it depends on the baby.

By the way, both ds and dd had dummies from being newborn as it helps get the wind up!

olivo · 12/09/2006 17:22

now I'm confused

just as i was leaving for the clinic, the hv rang! both of mine are off work so it was a different one, she offered to come today but have been booked for thurs. went to the clinic - dd has put on 8oz since last wed so I'm really chuffed.has inspried me to keep trying with the bf. also , the hv there said iif i could express 3 to 4 oz she could have that once in the evening/night without holly getting confused.

booby - have just bpought the avent isis too - was on some sort of offer in boots. will look for those dummies too - thanks.

eenywifemum · 12/09/2006 17:29

Olivo I am so sorry about your really frightening experience with your daughters birth. I can totally understand why you feel traumatised! Hope you are feeling better.

Alex has gained 1lb 1 1/2oz since last tuesday so he is still gaining LOADS of weight. I am really stressed today though - oh well!

BigHotMama · 12/09/2006 18:14

Hi everyone hope your all well and the little ones are all thriving!

Eeny thats great news about alex's weight? Hope the colic is easing off a bit you must feel so drained, i feel drained just looking after a baby, cant imagine what you've been going through hun.

Booby/Luna hows the expressing going with your Avent pump? I'm thinking of investing in one as will be working weekend evenings in 4 weeks time and will want to be expressing. Is there a nack to it or is it easy to master? How much did you pay for your pump?

Booby you mentioned about shaking all throught the C-section, i was exactly the same, didnt feel nervous just couldnt stop my whole body from shaking its a wonder they were able to cut me in a straight line. Am now off antiobiotics and the wound is healing better but still oozing a little.

Olivo sorry to hear about your traumatic time, that must have been absolutley terrifying for you. Its someting you see on Holby city and never think it could happen to you.

Does anybody else keep getting conflicting bits of advice? I've had several midwifes come to my house and a visit from the HV and they all have different opinions and slag one another off for telling me to do things in a certainway. One midwife told me to use oliveoil before a bath and another said after the bath, the HV went mad when I told her the midwife had told me to top up some feeds with formula as she reckons I should have been better supported with BF'ing, oh and then the HV went mad because I should have been given sterile dressings for my wound but mw had told me to use sanitory pads across it? WTF? I give up! Oh and the dummy issue, MW said dont use it in the day only at night as a soother to sleep? Have been using the Avent ones but may try the tommy tippee ones too.

PTulips good to hear you've got a little bruiser on your hands, cant wait till my little man is nice n chunky, he still looks so tiny at the moment and all his clobber is still huge so living in babygros and vests at the moment.

Breastfeeding is going well but am still topping up 2 feeds a day with 3oz feeds of formula and he's guzzling it down so think maybe I aint got enough milk to satisfy him at some feeds! Really cant see me giving up on Bf'ing I get a lovely feeling from it although sometimes my nips feel abused, must admit though am gagging to get back to my normal self and go out for a good drinky with my girlfriends, feels like forever I've been teetotal! Am planning a night out in 4 weeks time lol.

sarahlou1uk · 12/09/2006 18:31

BHM - I was the same when I had ds 3 years ago. Never saw the same mw or hv when my appointment came around and always gave opposite advice . At one stage, ds was only going 2 hours between bottles and one mw said give him cooled boiled water, the next day another mw said NO WAY!!!!

Funny enough, this time around, they have pretty much left me to it. Must be first timers that they try and confuse so that they aren't tempted to get pregnant again!!!!

BigHotMama · 12/09/2006 18:40

Saralou how mad, midwife also told me to give him cooled boiled water because he was constipated didnt poo for 6 days but it made him so miserable afterwards as he had trapped wind for hours and my other half made me feel bit guilty as I gave it to him straight after a feed and think it upset his tummy. Does your head in doesnt it? Then you've got all the conflicting advice from friends and family...urgh!

Jackson hardly ever cries in front of other people, am sure he's trying to trick them into thinking he's the perfect baby lol! He's just pooed through his babygro all up his back and my mom and dad have just heard him cry for the first time in 3 weeks, wishg he's poo when its his dad's turn to change the nappy! Just my luck!

lunavix · 12/09/2006 19:18

BHM - I got the avent iq uno (the electric one) from boots for around £85. It was a bit of a bargain in my eyes as with the £15 of points when you spend £75 offer that you get in the huggies pack from boots, plus two offers they had that day (may still be running, there was £5 of points when you spend £30 on avent, and another one) i ended up with £30 in points.

It's really good. I had a manual avent one with ds and it hurt like hell and was rubbish. This one doesn't hurt as all and I like the no effort function (it has memory so you pump and press a button and it pumps like you were) but I'm not getting much 20 min on each side might get me an ounce if lucky. I think it's me not the pump...

SnowBoo · 12/09/2006 21:02

Well just had my first baby pee down front. And now poor mite has colic. So its my turn to start getting stressed!

sarahlou1uk · 13/09/2006 08:26

Luna - I was using the Avent hand one and I used to get about 2 oz from each breast if I was lucky! Have stopped now as it was too much hassle and Molly has had all my 'good' stuff. All I can say, is keep persevering. Your milk will come in shortly and then you'll have plenty! Sending lots of positive vibes your way

lunavix · 13/09/2006 09:05

sarahlou - is my milk not 'in' yet??? she's 3 weeks tomorrow!

THe other thing I like about my pump is it comes with the bits to make it manual. I wanted to express in the bath the other day so I was able to (don't think all electrics have that option)

dd peed down me yesterday too snowboo, her nappy leaked as she was feeding. I thought it was me leaking!

I think she might have a bit of colic too but unsure. She gets very unsettled around 9pm but calms down when she's fed around 10.30... not entirely sure as ds had 'proper' colic - 10 - 3am screaming!

sarahlou1uk · 13/09/2006 12:00

Luna - not breast fed before but I assumed that the milk would start to come in floods rather than sporadically in 2oz bursts??!??!? Perhaps someone who has experience at breastfeeding will come along and correct me! I couldn't breastfeed with ds but did try with dd until I discovered her tooth!! OUCH!!! I tried expressing for one week but as I couldn't get more than 2oz out of each breast I gave up. Some of my friends told me that if I had continued, my milk would have 'come in' and I would have had more?!

Have you tried massaging your breasts before you express, or tried either looking at your baby or a picture of her? I've heard that if the brain is stimulated by a picture of baby, it encourages breasts to make more milk.

Anyway, keep trying.

PinkTulips · 13/09/2006 13:42

luna, i found when i first started pumping for dd that it took a few attempts to be able to get more than a few ounces. the pump isn't able to suck the milk in the same way so i find if i let my boob get very full i get loads and can then let baby drain the rest, if i try pumping when my boob isn't full to bursting i get f-all really. dont worry your milk is very definitely in, but just the right amount for kiera so when you want to take extra it'll take a couple of days for supply to catch up. i normally pump in the evening after not feeding from that side since the morning and get between 6 and 8 ozs easily, with some left over for the baby to drain, but it does mean that baby will feed more during the day from the other breast to build up the supply.

YellowFeathers · 13/09/2006 14:24

Hi everyone.
I have absolutly no advice to offer about BF having never done it. All I can say is a big well done to you all for doing it. I wish in a way I could have done it for a bit longer, even if it was just a few more days.

KG, Thats the main point with feeding, as long as you and baby are happy then thats all that matters.
Yes BF has lots of benefits for both mum and baby but when either one isn't happy then IMO its time to stop.

Luna, I've just posted the NCT book. Sorry I didn't do it on Monday like I said I would but you know how it is

Eeny, well done with the weight gain. Thats fab!

SnowBoo, you've only just been peed on? Crikey, Ellis peed and pooed all over me as soon as he was born! Still does it now, lol!

BHM, sounds like theres a bit of rivalry between the MW and HV! Are you still seeing your MW?

Its still like the vomit festival here. I'm constantly covered in what looks like cottage cheese. Its really attractive. I've also never done as much washing in my life.
It was a bit scary last night as Ellis threw up whilst he was nodding off to sleep in his carry cot. Poor thing was chocking and spluttering because he was lying on his back. The HV also rang last night to tell us that we can't mix the Gaviscon in with his milk as it would be too thick to go through the teats. The only way you can have it is to use normal formula or breast milk and as he can't tolerate anything as fluidy as that he can't have it at all. So we'll have to wait for his referal and see what to do from there.

YellowFeathers · 13/09/2006 14:31

SnowBoo, MSN is dead easy to install. Just type in MSN messenger into your search and go onto their site. It basically is just a case of clicking on install and pretty much does it. Another window will pop up so that you can enter your details and create an address and after that your ready.

Oh, you'll just need to tell us your address when you've done it!

olivo · 13/09/2006 18:04

hi everyone. feeling a bit better today, despite dd being up a lot in the night - eternal hunger! but managed to give dh the night to himself yet again - i think i have come to accept that she will be awake for over an hour each time whereas earlier, i thought a quick 20 min feed and she should be asleep again so got frustrated when she wouldnt settle. also, did my first 'out of the house' feed as she woke up when we were in town and was sreaming for it so fed her quickly in boots. was quite proud of myself as i was dreading it.

interested to read your bits and piecces on expressing - i have posted a coupl of questions on bf threads, as i dont know when etc to do it - i guess i just need to bite the bullet but if anyone has any advice, please let me know!

hope all are well. any news on dreamy?

YellowFeathers · 13/09/2006 19:45

melsy · 14/09/2006 11:29

morning all

Congrats noodlekitkat XX

Well we had a better night of sorts , if you count being up 2-3 and then 5, then 6:40 due to dd1 shouting for me , I suppose.

Eeeeny , that wieght gains great, yo got some gooood milk there.Hows you doing ?

BHM , its the thing that drives yer mad all the conflicting advice , does me head in too !! Oh and the shaking I think is a normal reaction to spinals/epidurals as I shook like a leaf with mine and dd1.

Olivo hope the advice is helping on EBM thread, I know I was a bit apprehensive to do expressing at 1st , but getting the hang of it again after 3yr gap!!!!

It looks as if Ive got darn bloody thrush again down below. Im getting mighty fed up with all that, as it seems Im not healing , as still have stitches that I can feel BLUERGH BLUERGH

get msning snowboo , chat with pink and then I can join convo and get your addy. Dont normally post it on here, Ive been getting dodgy people wanting to link with me.

olivo · 14/09/2006 13:52

afternoon! how is everyone?

congratulations noodlekitkat!

melsy - thanks for the ebm advice - i had a go this a.m and managed to get just over 3oz but it took about 20 mins. still, its a start and my avent isis pump is so easy to use. will keep trying each a.m hopefully. i assume it doessnt matter which feed she has it at? i would like dh to give it to her at the 11.30ish one so i can get some zzzzzzzzs!!!

had a better day yesterday, no tears but back to getting upset (dh's fault) thisa.m hopefullly it'll sort itself out but if not, will go to gp.

better go, hv due in a minute! talk to you later
