firstly Olivo - I must have missed it when you posted to announce Holly's birth so I dont know what went wrong in your labour but it sounds like you are really upset about it. I just wanted to say I felt the same way and Alex is 5 weeks old and although I dont cry over it anymore (knock on wood) I still feel a lot about it. So you arent alone. But it WILL get better!! And also I am another new Mum who doesnt have much time to do anything but cope with a baby so dont feel inadequete!

Dreamy good luck at your induction!

Everyone else hi and give your babies kisses for me! sorry this is so short as always

olivo · 11/09/2006 21:34

eeny - I dont actually think i did post about it though it might be therapeutic if i did! basically, i had gone through the most par tof my labour when she became very distressed, there was meconium in my aters and after deciding they couldnt try ventouse, they said i would need an emergency section. when they got her out, she was floppy and not breathing, took them a while to resucitate her and then she was taken straight away to SCBU. she had inhaled some meconium and swallowed lots of it so they had to flush out her stomach and things, she was on a drip etc and really unhappy for the first few days. they were lovely at the hospital and i've gone through everything with the midwife who did my labour but the whole resuscitation thing still really upsets me - she was 6-8 mins with not breathing.

sorry to bore you all with this but it kind of feels good sharing it.

kitegirl · 11/09/2006 21:44

christ Olivo how awful that must have been for you. When Milo was born there was a split second when he was out (c-section) and there was no sound, the obstetrician and everyone were quiet and I rememer thinking 'please cry, please please please...' so I can't even bear to think what it was like for you to wait for her to breath for that long. How horribly traumatic - but she is fine now. Thank you for sharing that story.

And no we are not together... I have been in tears every day. And drinking wine every day just to take the edge off. The first few weeks are hell. You are doing great for breastfeeding, it's really hard. Congratulations on Holly's arrival glad to have you on the post-natal board.

PinkTulips · 11/09/2006 23:19

olivo i know exactly how you feel, dd had to be resusitated too as she had the cord round her shoulder and was oxygen deprived during the birth and her heart had almost completely stopped beating by the time she was born. its so horrifying at the time seeing them like that.... i just remember chanting to myself 'she can't be dead, she can't be dead'. it does fade over time but even 19 months on i still feel sick thinking bout it (although the ease and uncomplicated nature of calebs birth hads helped alot) and as you can tell from my rambling i obviously haven't gotton over it sorry, just wanted you to know your not the only one and its perfectly normal to feel shaken and upset.

kg, please don't mention weight, i'm till wearing the jeans i wore when preg i haven't lost my baby weifght from dd never mind caleb!!!!!

Morning everyone

I just wanted to ask, is there anyone else bottle feeding?
I'm curious as to how much your baby is having and how often they are feeding?
Ellis has definatley decided that 3am and 6am are his times during the night but the day is very different. He can sometimes feed every hour or 2.

Olivo, I'm sure it would help having a good chat about your birth. Maybe even take it to the main board if you feel you can. There will probably be other mums who have gone through similar.
Both dd and Ellis pooed whilst I was in labour. DD was a bit worse for wear with it and had to have one of those monitors attached to her scalp whilst still inside. They got the resus equipment ready but luckily she was ok and breathing on her own when she arrived. Ds did the same but he was a bit easier to trace on the monitor and seemed happy.
It is frightning because you have all this other stuff going on, your minds working overdrive because your just about to have a baby and to deal with something like that on top is alot to get your head round (well thats what I think anyway).

sarahlou1uk · 12/09/2006 07:27

Morning Yellow. Molly is bottle feeding. During the day she normally has 5oz bottles every 3-4 hours. At night, I give her a top up feed just before I go to bed (around 10pm) of about 3oz which she sometimes finishes. She then wakes 3-4 hours later for a 5oz feed and then once more after 3-4 hours.

Last night, she had a 5oz at 10.30pm, woke at 2.45am had another 5 oz and then at 6am and had another 5oz. Think I'll have to make 6oz bottles though, as she draining the 5oz ones. She did start off on 3oz bottles when she was born 3 weeks ago, but she is a greedy little sod! If it is less than 3 hours since she had a feed and she starts sucking her fingers, I either give her a dummy to suck or a bottle of cooled boiled water. I remember the hv saying to me last time with Jack that on formula, the baby can get slightly dehydrated so it won't hurt them to have a drink of water between feeds. This also works if they have constipation!

How's Ellis doing?

YellowFeathers · 12/09/2006 07:56

Not so bad. He had a major vomit fest last night, bless him.
He's only just finishing 4oz feeds but that isn't everytime.
I think if he took full feeds in the day he would have a regular routine like Molly.
He woke at 3 and finished a 4oz feed but at 6 he's had bits and bats off a bottle over the space of an hour and only taken 2oz.

YellowFeathers · 12/09/2006 08:03

and hes just done it again. All over my shoulder and down my front and back.

dressedupnowheretogo · 12/09/2006 12:06

olivo · 12/09/2006 12:21

afternoon all! thanks for letting me share my labour woes, i might take it to the childbirth thread and see if anyone has had eny similar experiences and can help me put it behind me.

have had a better night - i managed to do the whole night from 10.30 to 7.15 without waking dh - although he told me he didnt sleep properly anyway ! she woke every couple of hours but i read somewhere on here about dealing with her startle reflex when i put her down and managed to use their tips! she has also slept for nearly two hours till now -I'm going to have to wake her in a bit though as i need to feed her before we go to the baby clinic otherwise she'll scream the place down!!

booby - sorry to hear about cj's acne, have never heard of this before. and a cold on top of that, poor thing.

yf - vomitfest [ grin] - seriously though, must be pretty demoralising to do give him all that milk only to have it brought back up.

any tips on getting dd to keep a dummy in? is it just persistence? she's not playing the game!!

dressedupnowheretogo · 12/09/2006 12:39

olivio just read about your birth i missed it before that mmomnet when they lift them up when you have a sectionis scary but to be honest i was shaking so hard all the way thru the op and feeling sick it didint really register also im sure she screamed pretty much straight away

but how awful im glad your better now and im glad your still feeding but you must talk to either your health visitor or your gp dont leave it to long please promise me you will
love jayne

sarahlou1uk · 12/09/2006 12:42

Olivo - if you're breastfeeding, DO NOT GIVE DUMMY. Bottle fed babies will take a dummy, but because it is a totally different way of sucking, it is not recommend that you give breast fed babies a dummy as it makes them get used to a teat in their mouth and not a nipple. You could find that your baby will therefore start to reject your breast.

olivo · 12/09/2006 12:45

wish i had a health visitor to talk to - she hasnt phoned but i am descending on the clinic this p.m anyway. my gp is aware i'm a bit screwed up by it, she phoned me at the weekend to see how i was getting on but i might make an appt to go and see her.
thanks for your support booby.

olivo · 12/09/2006 12:47

thanks sarahlou - didnt know that! will put dummy out of sight!

it p*es me off actually that the hv hasnt been in touch - surely they should be there to tell you things like that? i feel soooooo out of my depth with some things. thank god for mumsnet.

uh oh, here come the tears again.

YellowFeathers · 12/09/2006 12:55

Booby, hope your ok. If you need to chat you know where we are
Not sure about the cold at this age really.

Olivo, Holly might be like Ellis. He won't have one at all. Just spits them out. DD loved hers but this little one is having none of it!

Well the HV has been and at last, Ellis is back at his birth weight plus 1oz! Can't belive it really with the amounts hes been puking!
But she is refering us to one of the paeds at the hopital as shes apparently a bit of a reflux specialist. Also he's probably going to have to have gaviscon in his feeds too. If these don't work they're going to try another milk.

dressedupnowheretogo · 12/09/2006 12:56

by the olivio cj has been having a dummy for the last three weeks it makes her sleep and comforts her and she is till breast feeding well

we use the tomee tippee dummys which has a strange shaped teat and are hollow so the teat moves back and forth like a nipple and we've had no problems so far so dont r=write them off staright away they are available in all the boots over here so you should be able to get them in jersey i hope it goes well at clinic this afternoon

burstingbug · 12/09/2006 13:04

I'm breastfeeding Joe, he's gone from 8lb6oz at birth to 10lb12oz in 3 weeks, he is given a dummy to settle him, but never for very long. He is still feeding exceptionaly well and has gone from the 75th centile to almost the 91st centile. I never liked the dummy and still don't, I think it looks awful, but sometimes they're fab in moderation.

dressedupnowheretogo · 12/09/2006 13:21

my thoughts exactly i hate the fact she has one but it means i sleep and she sleeps and since she weighed 6lb7oz at birth and last week weighed 8lb14oz im pretty chuffed

My LO has dummy and breast and he takes better to the breast than the bottle so i think it depends on the baby. He has it when i'm trying to get ds1 sorted and fed whilst he waits his turn for dinner etc. Has been a life and sanity saver!!!

Also, how do i set up MSN thingy? Everyone seems to be on there, inc my cousin in Holland and i haven't got a brain at the mo.

kitegirl · 12/09/2006 13:37

YF I breastfed Milo for a month but am just in the process of giving up. He really doesn't feed a lot at all, 3oz at most feed, sometimes even less.

I have to say, and cannot say this on the breastfeeding board as would be shot down in flames, but I feel soooooo much better for having given up. More energy, and it was really bringing me down. We are both happier now and have a half-arsed routine going.

SnowBoo · 12/09/2006 13:40

Oh and it does get better Olivo.

SnowBoo · 12/09/2006 13:42

KG i was like that with ds1. Only perserving this time to lose weight! Is that selfish?? Will give up once he goes onto bigger bottles. Then dh can get off his ass and feed baby...

dressedupnowheretogo · 12/09/2006 14:06

am finding cj prefers tommee tippee booby bottle with the nipples for her ebm am investing in the avent iq uno pump so i can go out and about on my own any idea how much i should be expressing ?

PinkTulips · 12/09/2006 14:25

avant dummies are great too. bf dd for a year and wouldn't have been able to without the dummies! hv ordered me to the chemist to buy them as my nipples were bleeding so much from her being constantly latched on.

calebs had his for a week now as i hated leaving him screaming if i had to do something with dd and he loves them, no nipple confusion at all, he didn't much like the bottle of ebm dp tried to give him the other night, went to sleep in disgust and woke up 10mins later shouting for food and spent half an hour on the breast! little bugger!
