With the risk of sounding oh so trivial, is baking a gooey chocolate cake for a first birthday a massive no-no?

Report
Plonkysaurus · 26/02/2014 09:32

I would do it Betty. Think of everything you've experienced in the last year...don't you think you deserve a wedge of gooey chocolate cake? The lentil weavers may disagree, but I'd rather have chocolate than a hemp cake.

Speaking of lentil weaving...I've sent DS to nursery in a reusable nappy. What are the chances they recoil in horror and have Stern Words with me at pickup?

betty chocolate cake of course Wink

pud we can be worse than your dm. Get back to bed now! Work will still be there when you are better. Unfortunately it won't disappear.

There is sunshine in London. Spring is here!

So officially after 1 our babies will be toddlers right?

Crikey, Cantturn, that sounds terrifying. Fingers firmly crossed it turns out to be nothing too serious.

DD thinks drills are the funniest thing ever. We're getting all the doors and windows replaced. Thank God it's fairly mild weather. Got a horrible feeling there won't be much napping today.

Chocolate cake sounds lovely and all the present ideas sound great. No news here as he was too wheezy and rattly to sedate him for MRI today so it's been delayed til tomorrow morning. Understand why but feels like an eternity.

All the first birthday plans sound really lovely. Thanks for all the kind wishes.

Ah Cantturn that's a shame you'll had a longer wait but better safe than sorry for sedation in little ones! How's he doing today?

Gooey chocolate cake it is, although the prototype isn't going too well after some badly chosen shortcuts!

yummychocolate · 26/02/2014 18:36

cantturn I can't imagine how you all must feel. Do you have support from friends and family? Ds1 must be worried about his little brother.

betty i bet you have enjoyed eating the prototypes.

I'm not a good patient Wink but survived and feel better for starting to clear the backlog. Minor panic as nursery phoned to say they'd had a break in and weren't allowed in the building. Set up emergency shop in local hotel but couldn't cope all day... However all sorted before we had to try and arrange emergency cover! Phew.

Sorry for the delay Cantturn but better safe than sorry when it comes to sedation and littl'uns as Betty says. Hope you both have a quiet night and it's all ok tomorrow.

Stormy, haven't had a chance to say that I think your handling things very gracefully. Whatever happens, whatever you decide you want to happen, you seem to have held it all together admirably so well done you. Dd can be proud of her mummy.

We have clapping this week. Lots and lots and lots of clapping Grin.

Thanks again everyone for all the kind thoughts. We're still here and he's finally asleep after refusing all day. Loads of support from family, friends and colleagues-everyone's been great (including here) but I just want it all to be over and us to be home. He's been ok today but has barely eaten or drunk anything since he was admitted so is going on a drip shortly. He's still very lively though which is good to see-took his first steps last weekend so he's not too happy about being cooped up in a hospital room! Hopefully we willl have answers by early afternoon.

It's really nice to hear how all your little ones are doing! Pud I love the over enthusiastic clapping too, it's so cute. Betty-multiple trial runs (and tastings) are definitely necessary when baking chocolate cakes, enjoy! I am under orders by DS1 to make another train birthday cake (slightly train obsessed) but think that's more for him than his brother!

Stuck at home all day here. Just DD's bedroom window to fit, then touching up all the edges, then sorting out the living room window disaster. Currently the drill is causing a nap fail. We also have a snot river, and a molar. Fun times.

Plonkysaurus · 27/02/2014 14:08

I'm here! Me! Yummy your post t'other days making me need pancakes.

A molar Stormy? I suspect ours are imminent, he's had cheeks like apples the last few days. Have to admit that I gave BabySomething a bit of satsuma the other day and recoiled in horror thinking I'd seen chewing gum in there. Yes I really am that thick. It was a big pearly molar.

I've a friend visiting tonight. DS is working in sunny Birmingham and won't be back til late so I've got to fetch said friend between bathtime and bedtime. Oh and tomorrow DS and I are driving to the Wirral to visit my sister. When it rains it pours.

I can't believe that this day last year was my due date. It's causing me to be very reflective, and, yes, broody. Ho hum maybe we can try again in the winter.

CantTurn any progress?

Yes, I did have to assure plonk that I know DS is too young for chewing gum and she needn't worry Wink He has 2 of the buggers on one side and an impending one on the other side. And the top ones. And he likes to bite shoulders! Ouch.

Happy birthday to mini-Betty! Got any cake left to share??

This unpredictable weather might be a good reason to have to stay in all day yummy and stormy. I dared to venture out on my lunch break and just missed a downpour despite the sun beaming just a few minutes before.

How are you doing, cantturn? Any developments?

pud glad to see that you're feeling better. Maybe that's why DS started clapping? He's happy about it too!

cantturn has the drip helped? did you manage to get your scan? How are you holding up? You sound incredibly strong from your posts. It's great that you have good support around you. Wondering whether you're in another night? Been thinking of you today.

Plonky, mission accomplished? Sounds hectic.

Stormy where are those windows at? Have you found the lack of naps affects night time sleep? We have little cold and molar teething here too. Fun times.

Happy birthday miniBetty! A photo of her devouring the choc cake would be nice :-)

All is ok here. Am loving the positively April weather. We met up with one of the hypnobirthing mum/baby combos today for walk to park and lunch afterwards. I made her ds a birthday cake as I'd missed his birthday a few weeks previous. Being lentil weavers Grin our babies had not had cake before (just a rich tea biscuit during tummy bug gate) and it was really interesting seeing them eat it. They'd had enough of their cheesy courgette pasta stuff and couldn't possibly entertain the idea of another mouthful. But when the cake came out its almost as if they were hard wired to know how good and desirable it is. They both jammed the whole piece in their cake hole in one, hamster style. Funny. But the last laugh was on them because it was one of those hippy cakes with apples, carrots, sultanas and raisins! They got three of their five a day right there Smile

Can we chat about favourite books for your babies please? Ecobaby likes anything with flaps (ahem) right now so it's all about zoo book and where's spot in her world. I like to read what the ladybird heard by the gruffalo people, day monkey night monkey and no matter what by Debbi gliori (stormy weather by her is nice too). I'd love to hear what's going down well in your homes right now. I'd like to get some birthday books.

Bath and evil Pepsi beckon.

DD's appetite for Everyone Hide From Wibbly Pig knows no bounds. Flappy books are very popular. Got some Meg and Mog ones for her birthday. And she loves Tanka Tanka Skunk too.

Windows are progressing. Bathroom, kitchen, and back door all done and sealed and so on. Front door still needs finishing touches round the edges. DD's bedroom being done in the morning. Living room... New window should be here and fitted tomorrow, but I get the distinct impression someone's going to lose their job over that cock up. The chap who's doing the windows was very pleased to find his hammer at last - he was here doing my bedroom window exactly a year ago, and he's been looking for it ever since. And he's putting up curtain rails for me, so me and my dad went curtain shopping today. It was fun, which I think means I'm officially a sad old bag.

you got to get your kicks where you can Stormy when you're the mother of a small person. We were just discussing today how on some rainy days successfully extracting a bogey from the baby is the day's highlight.

Thanks for book tips. New flappy books! Hurrah.

Evening all, and I hope it is turning out to be a lovely calm sleepy one. It is certainly sleepy here, as a certain young lady refused her afternoon nap today. I tried every trick in the book... I even pushed her in her pram for 2 entire hours. That is not a typo. It really was 2. I'm taking it she was enjoying watching the dogs, and sleep she would not.

Cantturn I hope you've had some positive outcomes today. Thinking of you.

Eco lentil weaving cake sounds very tasty, but did the tinies not suss you out and spit out the healthy bits? I'm fairly certain the worselet could locate and reject a raisin at 50 yards. She's cunning like that.

Books wise this is an all time favourite. Especially the This Little Piggy page. You can't beat a This Little Piggy page. Allegedly.

Stormy new windows. Yay! Top marks that land lord. If they're double glazed units you have to open them lots though, or you can get condensation related mouldy walls. Sounds illogical, but much of life is illogical. You probably knew all that already so I'll take my DIY hat off now and shut up.

This time last year it wasn't quite my due date but I was rather wishing it was. I really enjoyed pregnancy until the last three weeks, at which point I kind of figured I'd had enough. DD however had other ideas and hung on in three for 3 days over. It must have been comfy.

ecofreckle · 27/02/2014 20:33

Great, and it's cardboard pages too worse. Just what we need for our little tearaway (literally....can't be trusted with a library book without very close supervision) so it's no the list. Thank you!

I'm fairly sure the sultanas were ingested. I guess tomorrow's nappy will tell me everything I need to know Grin

Did I ever mention I was 20 days over when ecobaby decided to put in an appearance? Little did I know this time last year I'd still have a month to go!
