Hi all - the old thread was about to run out so I started a new one.

Little Miss was up to mischief last night. Thankfully it's DHs day off today so he took her into bed with him while I slept in the spare room. She is just so excitable when she wakes up at night. It can can 90 minutes to scrape her off the ceiling.

Is anyone else NOT doing BLW? We are just feeding by spoon, some purée, some normal stuff just cut up small. He's loving everything and getting it all in the mouth! I know BLW is good as it gets them accustomed to finding their mouth etc and is in vogue. Is there anything else we are missing by not doing BLW?

SweetPeaPods · 16/02/2014 21:39

We are doing a bit of both but mainly purée. Ds wouldn't eat enough if we just did blw.
He normally has porridge for breakfast. Sometimes toast.
Purée for lunch and dinner followed by yoghurt or fruit pot but I will let him have rice cakes or bread sticks, and chunks of Apple etc too. I let him have pudding as his portions are still pretty small and he's not a big fan of milk. Had less than 10oz today, hence the porridge & yoghurt.
He still really likes his purées smooth so trying to encourage 'bits' at the minute. Also trying to purée what we are having for dinner if possible.

Mrs81 · 16/02/2014 22:36

We also do more puree than baby-led. In my head I'd expected us to be more blw than this but we've landed on a way that suits ds and us and that's as much as I can hope for! Grin

Sunbeam18 · 16/02/2014 22:38

Thanks - good to know! This seems to work for us. Will try to introduce some finger foods too , good plan.

curlyclaz13 · 16/02/2014 22:56

What yogurts are you giving to your dc ? Looked at petit filous but they seem sugary but I am over thinking it ?

Sunbeam18 · 16/02/2014 23:32

I give petit filous

RueDeWakening · 17/02/2014 00:07

We use supermarket own brand value fromage frais - when I checked last (years ago), they were the least sugary.

hedgehogy · 17/02/2014 09:09

We're giving plain natural yogurt and adding in fruit that we've prepared and frozen into ice cubes (so we have bags of apple ice cubes, pear ice cubes, mango ice cubes etc). One cube takes 20 seconds to defrost and 5 seconds to mix in. DD loves it. The yogurts aimed at kids are full of sugar.

MaryWestmacott · 17/02/2014 09:41

we're doing about half and half BLW and purees, although what goes in DD, it's probably more purees as most finger food is mashed and then smeered all round the high chair, floor, her head (she got some round the back of her neck yesterday, lovely), me...

For yoghurts, we have some of the plum ones for DD, although often she ends up with one of DC1's yoghurts as I'm rarely organised enough to make sure I have stuff for both of them in. DC1 is rather obsessed with the yeo valley organic little tasters ones - they have a picture of a tractor on them and so are called tractor yoghurts in our house and are the best thing ever, apparently (anything with tractors on is the best thing ever). They only have added fruit juice, so not bad.

SweetPeaPods · 17/02/2014 09:57

I did a comparison yesterday funnily enough on yogurts/ fromage frais and wont be buying petit filous. Couldn't believe the sugar content in a tiny tub.
Best seemed to be Ella's kitchen or yeo valley. Or natural yoghurt and add own fruit purée.

curlyclaz13 · 17/02/2014 10:23

Thanks for the yoghurt advice, off to town in a bit so will have a look.

pinkbear82 · 17/02/2014 10:28

We're doing a mix of spoon feeding and blw. It alters day to day! And with two dogs in the house if there is a hand full of food help at the wrong height for too long one or the other tries their luck!

Nightmare weekend with dsds, Friday dsd2 was home with earache, took her docs (again. The Mum seems incapable of ever doing this) got back from there, which is two mins away from their school, which is about 30 mins from home, got a phone call dsd1 was being sick, could we collect. So off we went.
Dsd2 clearly felt better Saturday as her behaviour turned from quiet and cuddly to hellish. And it just got worse.

Dd is asleep at the min, and I am enjoying the only sound I can hear of the ticking clock! Love them all dearly but peace is lovely.

AlohaMama · 17/02/2014 12:58

We're doing more spoon feeding than finger food. I won't say puree as it's all fork mashed/potato masher, don't actually puree. Tbh I find it quicker and easier for us.

Annoyingly everyone here has coughs and cold that have stuck around for ages. So fed up of it now. DS keeps coughing so hard he makes himself sick and DD is smearing snot all over herself while she sleeps. Lovely! And although DD is now sleeping all night (yay!!) I am loosing about 3 hrs sleep a night coughing, wiping snot off DS, etc etc.

Sunny, sounds so scary with your lo. Have you ahd any other reactions to food or just that one time? We have had a couple of times where DD has had all these red blotches come up around her mouth after eating but I'm putting it down to skin sensitivity to being in contact with food and hoping it's not an actual allergy. Anyone else come across this?

SweetPeaPods · 17/02/2014 13:14

Aloha we would love to do mashed, and I keep trying but ds is being a monkey prefers it really smooth for some reason. Starting to introduce texture but it's very hit or miss.
Sorry to hear of all the poorlyness.
Ds has another cold, green snot and another cough. He seems to have cough after cough at the minute. He was up a few times in the night, and ended up with me most of the night. However we have just had a lovely nap of 2.5hrs. So much better mood all round. Might not tell DH or he'll ask what I did in they 2.5hrs!

pinkbear82 · 17/02/2014 14:04

Ladies, what buggies have you got? Mine has broken for the second time, exactly the same issue as the first, I am not having a replacement I have requested a refund. I'll have about £300 to spend.

I have a quinny zapp xtra I can use for now, but it's not a smooth ride for everyday use (compared to her main one that just broke) we got the zapp second hand as her car seat fits it.

Nothing essential I don't think, apart from adjustable handle, as DP is taller than me!

AlohaMama · 17/02/2014 14:11

pinkbear we have the Phil and teds navigator. We only got this as it seemed to be the best of the doubles that we looked at - we wanted an 'in line' double and that was off-road as I do quite a bit of walking. It's worked out really well for that, but if you don't need a double there are probably better optiosn out there. In fact, as we hardly ever use the 2nd seat now (DS prefers to walk) I'm just about to sell it, and have just got a BOB jogging stroller (SE revolution). I had one in Hawaii, loved it, sold it for the P&T and now am going back. It's a dream to push, great suspension, turns on a dime (as they'd say in the US), easy to fold, and great for running. If those things aren't important to you, then might not suit. It's big, as all joggers are, so we also have a cheapie umbrella stroller I use for pushing round shops or travelling. Lots of people talk about adjustable handles, me and DH have nearly a foot between us but we've never found it a problem pushing the same stroller.

pinkbear82 · 17/02/2014 14:15

Thanks Aloha, I don't think DP would fuss about the handles to be honest.
Gonna have to look at everything again Hmm but always good to know what others make of things.

RueDeWakening · 17/02/2014 14:15

I'd go for a maclaren now, they're all big/old enough - we haven't got one yet since we had to skip the last one after 6 years hard use, but will replace it before Easter I think (as we're going away for a few days and don't want to take the Beast).

I quite like the Silver Cross Pop too.

Think DS1 & 2 will be moving into their new room tonight :o IF I manage to finish the sodding curtains which are taking forever.

It's half term this week, so we're all home for the week, too - so far, so good...

hedgehogy · 17/02/2014 15:17

Sorry to hear about all the poorly ones.

We've got the icandy strawberry. We love it; compact, easy to fold, really easy to steer/push (for me and my husband, and there's a foot between us - he's extremely tall!), looks great. Should be the only one we need.

Sunbeam18 · 17/02/2014 17:13

I'd definitely get a Maclaren with the age of our babes now, pink. We've got a Jane Slalom Pro pram as our 'system' but have a v cheap second-hand light buggy too that we keep in the car. The Jane is fab but quite a big and cumbersome thing and doesn't fold quickly and easily.

SunnyL · 17/02/2014 18:12

Well the GP reckons it was probably the egg that she reacted to but it's unlikely to be a very strong reaction since she didn't react to her innoculations which are grown on egg. We've been advised to get some baby piriton in and to do little tests with the egg and the tuna. The doctor was honest and said in our area she doesn't often see babies coming in that eat fish - unless it's the battered kind from McDonalds Hmm

As from buggies I've got the bugaboo chameleon. It's ace and really good for off road paths. But it's huge and expensive. I imagine when she gets bigger i'll end up getting one of those wee foldable McLaren buggies that everyone else has.

OP posts:
Sarah2506 · 17/02/2014 18:37

Maclaren is awesome. Think I will sack the bugaboo now! She loves looking out, and I love the fact that I can lie her down for naps. And the sun bit is so much better, folds right down. Oh and excellent rain cover as well. Actually works which is kind of a bonus!

World of pain here. We were all set to go on house purchase. Morning of exchange the buyer announces he'd like to pay less. I reluctantly agree but then the top of the chain disappears and now it looks like it will all fall through. So sick of this. Feel like will be stuck in this flat FOREVER.

Mrs81 · 17/02/2014 19:14

Sarah, I'm so sorry about the sale. I hope it sorts out soon...

Sunny - that's a good point about the jabs and eggs, I'd forgotten about that. We've avoided egg so far because ds was very sicky after I'd eaten egg (a few times) - gp advice. We have appt at children's hospital next month so we'll see what they say. Anyway, sounds like you have a sensible gp. I hope you get to the bottom of it quickly Smile

Re prams: we have the uppababy vista and I love it. It's quite bulky but as I mostly travel by public transport rather than car it's been bloody brilliant!

SweetPeaPods · 17/02/2014 21:53

We have the iCandy peach which we love. We're going to buy the adapters to convert it to a double when dc2 arrives.

AlohaMama · 18/02/2014 21:27

Urgh so sorry sarah. House buying and selling has to be the most painful thing ever, always so so stressful. We've had a few like that so I feel your pain. Hope it all works out for you.
