Hello ladies, can you believe we will be entering into a 6th year of this thread this year?

Thanks Rubes. have got steriliser back from lady I gave it to. DD3 up and weeping tonight, but DH manfully stuffing some formula down her. poor baby. just want to cuddle her endlessly. Weird this being my last. feels different as I KNOW she's my last, IYSWIM.

am so tired but DH has me watching Game of Thrones. it's terribly good.

Heartychoke · 01/02/2014 08:57

Gosh, I still sterilise and DS is 8.5 months! I have a microwave steriliser and its do easy. I don't really trust our ancient dishwasher as half the time pots and pans come out of it with remnants of food.

Just booked a week in the Canaries over Easter. So many lovely holidays to look forward to this year but that week is out only holiday without friends and as we live with the au pair it will be a rare treat to be just the five of us for a whole week.

I hope the funeral went well LadyT and that you havearestful and healing weekend in Madrid.

JamInMyWellies · 01/02/2014 09:50

Lady I hope yesterday was a reflection on the joy your FIL gave you. Have fun in Madrid.

Arti Easter sun sounds fab.

JamInMyWellies · 01/02/2014 09:52

On the sterilising front. I read an article ages ago about the merits of sterilising over hot soapy water and hit soapy water was found to as effective.

ShadyLadyT · 02/02/2014 08:45

Hello lovely girls. Thank you for all your wonderful wishes re: Friday. I have to say it went really well. Everyone seemed to have a good time (that sounds weird but you know what I mean), I was pleased woth my eulogy (although I was a bit wobbly getting it out at times) and I found seeing the coffin really upsetting, but I always do. Now I have got the will and all the administration to sort out (and when your house burns down there's a heck of a lot). I am just still so upset he's gone, to be honest, but giving him a good send off was definitely cathartic.

And now of course I am in lovely Madrid! It was a brilliant plan to come here yesterday...if I'd gone home I'd have been moping. I just love this city. The Spanish are so interesting and uncompromising, I love the atmosphere here, the food...Yesterday I knackered myself walking round the Prado and just round generally. Today I'm doing the Reina Sofia (it's the modern art one), a food market which I like because it's in a posh area of town and I like to gawk at the glossy, incredibly-clothed rich people Grin, and a quick walk round the Retiro (equivalent of Hyde Pk). Back home tonight, then Uncle Roger's funeral on Mon.

Jam, am very sorry to hear about your Granny. What a shame. When is the funeral? Did you sort out about flight i.d. for DS3?

Rubes, I'd have blown a gasket if my GP had said I was a bit OCD. Mind you, pigs would fly before anyone said I was, I wish I flipping was a bit! [Grin] But Arti is right, it is a condition that shouldn't be joked about or used as a term of abuse. I'm liking your tack with the receptionist though. What on earth did you say that she actually gave you some genuine info? Ours wouldn't! Remind me of your free days yet again and let's pop to Reading. Please. And what car bits are in Oxfordshire? Can we help??

Talking about meeting, is the London/southerly ladies' evening meet-up still happening Fri 28 Feb? Shall we make it a MUST?

Indith, I do worry about you, you know. You are under so much pressure with the course, the kids (which, however we cut it and however the dads pitch in, basically end up being our sole responsibility), the lack of sleep. I know it's gruelling, but you are doing so well to keep going. I shall say that louder. WELL DONE! Please tell me the course is only a year...

Arti, you were worrying about Lanzarote a bit. I have been to three Canary Islands now (not that one though) and really wanted to say that you can have the holiday you want to have. Just like practically anywhere that British people visit in mainland Spain, Portugal, Greece etc there are 'British pubs' and 'Billy's Breakfasts' where you can have a full English with a load of pissed-up nitwits, or you can completely avoid them. Fuerteventura (v close to Lanzarote) was surprisingly unspoilt and if you want some proper Canarian culture, you CAN find it. So don't worry and enjoy the sunshine. And tell me about your other travel plans. I never tire of hearing about other people's hols.

Invis, it was lovely to see you dropping in. I know you are a fan of HM (I haven't read anything which I have really adored for ages) and I will probably take one of the fat ones on a holiday when I have time to give it full attention. Hope you are managing your own somewhat crazy working life and doing ok...

On the sterilising, we used it for about a year but maybe the guidelines have changed as you say, from 6mths to 3. To be honest we got into a routine and it wa s just easier. Also, like Arti's, our dishwasher is less than optimal...But I can well believe the research that Jammy cited about soap and water being as effective!

So much more to say to so many but I don't want to miss breakfast! So will carry one when I sit down for lunch.

Mckayz · 02/02/2014 11:44

Lady, I am glad you are having a nice time in Madrid and that the funeral went well. I hope tomorrow isn't too hard for you.

Jam, was it you that flew to Florida with Monarch? I am sure someone here did. I have heard rubbish things about them but they are fairly cheap compared to the other airlines.

DH might be getting a large tax rebate from a few years ago when he was paying tax but was working out of UK waters. So we are thinking if he gets it we will take the DC to Florida next year. Got to keep our fingers crossed.

ShadyLadyT · 02/02/2014 12:43

Ooh, hope you get it Kayz. When will he know? The Revenue are hot on getting money out of you and awful at paying it back in my experience - you will remember I waited 8 months....As to Monarch, an old girlfriend of DP's used to be quite high up there. I think they are a perfectly decent airline. Actually we are flying to Spain with them in April when we go to Andalusia, I will let you know. If do you end up travelling as far as Florida, the flight conditions are usually a cut above what you get on a short flight to Europe anyway. Particularly if you often fly Ryanair, as I do!

JamInMyWellies · 02/02/2014 13:07

Kayz yes it was us that flew Monarch. Shocking service from beginning to end. Perfectly acceptable for short haul flights but would never use them again for longer flights.

Lady am glad the funeral went well. Enjoy your wkend.

ShadyLadyT · 02/02/2014 13:28

Ooh blimey! Sorry Jam, I remember that now. Please ignore what I said Kayz Grin

Vagolajahooli · 02/02/2014 13:43

Ooohh Lady one of my most amazing life experiences was standing in front of Gernica at the Reina Sofia. Glad the funeral was what he deserved and gave you a little positive in all this crappyness.

On sterilisation I stopped when I caught DS1 chewing on the wheel of his pushchair. Granted he was 7 months and we didn't use bottles but still. Also they used to tell women to clean their nipples thoroughly with a hot cloth before BFing and that is now clearly unnecessary. I thought a wash on the top part of the DW was enough. I think it's more important to make up the formula with boiling hot than it is to sterilise the bottles.

Kayz that sounds exciting about the trip to Florida. Hope you find out soon.

arti DH & I went to Malaga a few years ago and were apprehensive because of the Shagaloof stories. But wewent to a town on the other side of the island and it was lovely.

Same vag. amazing painting.

Love Madrid. know exactly which market you mean ladyt and am salivating. glad you are enjoying the escape. Have you been for chocolate con churros yet?

2 more weeks off placement. That's 3 community days, 2 long labour ward days, one training session and 2 nights. nearly there!

mum's op tomorrow.

ds2 being very snuggly. Love it.

ShadyLadyT · 02/02/2014 14:15

I had a long look at Guernica today actually! Actually I have got more done than I thought today, because as well as the Reina Sofia and the market and the Retiro, I also found a Sunday second hand books market. I bought a book called 'Mrs Thompson, su mundo y yo'. Well, I had to! Also it has a cool 1950s cover. I went to the Botanical Gardens as well, and what seemed to be a newish gallery called the Caixa Forum. I haven't had choc and churros, largely because I don't go a bundle on hot chocolate...but it's good coffee here.

I'm airport bound now. Funny how you can use phones on their metro! I'm sorry to leave, but I will be excited to see the girls (not that I will see them until the morning cos they'll be in bed).

ShadyLadyT · 02/02/2014 14:16

Oh, and white light for your Mum's op, Indith.

JustRubes · 02/02/2014 15:19

Lady glad you're having a nice time - didn't realise you were going solo! Thanks for the offer but the car was in Sussex!
Took Monarch to Malaga last Summer. No great issues except for the usual complaint of having to pay extra for everything possibly needed as an essential. Wouldn't use them long haul as they are a short haul carrier so wouldn't expect a great deal if you do, but you get what you pay for and they are cheaper I'm sure.

Vagolajahooli · 02/02/2014 18:26

I've been lucky enough to see some amazing art works but I don't think any effected me like Guernica. The Monet's at l 'orangerie of lovely and a must see but Guernica blew me away. A few friends and I are thinking of going to Madrid in May. Would love to see it one more time.

Indith where are your placements (if you don't mind me asking)

OP posts:
Indith · 02/02/2014 18:38

I'll PM you vag.

It is an amazing work, I find it very emotional. The war was a terrible time and so many people suffered in bombing raids but Guernica will always stand out. Spanish history is somewhat fucked up.

TheInvisibleHand · 02/02/2014 21:53

Lady - glad to hear that the funeral was as it should be and that the Madrid trip is going well. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.

Life here OK, though a little more than usually stretched at the moment. Big internal promotion interview this week. The whole thing is a bit of a rigmarole - have done one round already, personality testing, verbal/numerical reasoning test and a half day chatting with a psychologist. There are drinks on the eve of the interview. To be honest am feeling slightly jaded, but will have to find a way to be chipper! DH off on a boys walking weekend so will be with the DCs from Thursday onwards for a long weekend, which will be a healthy change of pace. Am finding the DCs delightful and deeply frustrating in turns - its the being ignored when it suits them that drives me insane....

Lady am reading Stoner at the moment - which I am liking. Did not like the luminaries at all. Feel like I pointlessly wasted a chunk of my life, which I rarely feel about a book.

Indith - it certainly sounds like you have your hands very full right now - I hope all goes well with your mum's op tomorrow.

I'm really feeling for my sis at the moment - her one and a half year old managed to pull a cup of boiling water down on himself and scald himself pretty badly. 2 nights in hospital. Amazing how easily these things happen. Her DH has previously suffered bad burns himself and finding it hard. Mind you, did see DN this pm who was remarkably cheery. Small people are unbelievably resilient.

sybilfaulty · 03/02/2014 07:09

Huge amounts of love and light to you and your mum today, Indith. Thinking of you all X

Mckayz · 03/02/2014 07:12

Lady, I hope today goes well for you.

Indith, I hope your Mums op goes well.

DS2 has a really bad cough. Considering keeping him off today.

Vagolajahooli · 03/02/2014 08:49

Popping on to say white light for Indith mum.

Invis all the best for the interview process. Sorry to hear about your DN's burn. Will he need any follow up or do they think that is all?

Thinking of you today Lady.

got your PM Indith.

JustRubes · 03/02/2014 09:03

Thinking of you both Indith and Lady.

JamInMyWellies · 03/02/2014 09:53

Love to both lady and indith today. X

Mckayz · 03/02/2014 10:28

I'm having a pants day. DS2 is off because he's got a bad cough, I've fallen over and sprained my ankle and cut my knee. Now school have rang to say DS1 has tummy ache and has to come home.

I want to go back to bed.

Indith · 03/02/2014 10:30

Thank you.

thinking of you ladyt.

Sorry about your dn invis. Small children are very resilient and do heal well. dd pulled a cup of coffee over herself at a similar age. She has chicken pox scars worse than the mark left from that! She must had one small area of skin that is slightly lighter than the rest. They said it would even out over time with sun exposure etc but it is on her belly so me being a mean uv top on the beach sort of a mummy it has yet to have much sunlight! Hope your dn recovers well.

Indith · 03/02/2014 10:34

duvet day kayz!

of to finish writing up my evidence file. Might even get it done by lunch. Then can perhaps make my home slightly less of a health hazard.

What do people think of washer dryers? No space for a separate tumble but really struggling with laundry when I'm working. Would be a cost I can do without since current washer only 4 years old but. ....

What concerns me is running cost of 180 a year compared with 30 a year for washer alone. and that is an A rated one! But I suppose I wouldn't user it for every load and hardly at all in summer.
