Hello ladies, can you believe we will be entering into a 6th year of this thread this year?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
beans37 · 13/05/2014 17:44

Beathag?

ShadyLadyT · 13/05/2014 18:07

Eh? Have you been on the gin Beans? Grin

beans37 · 13/05/2014 18:30

It was a name DH and I found hilarious in our search for names. We are such wags.

JustRubes · 13/05/2014 18:49

not sure. I'm going in for a follow up and chat about it. It's basically a thing that's meant to close up as a baby and in rare cases it doesn't. Comes up as a swelling now and then. Never noticed it before about 2 years ago and then thought it was lymph nodes etc. It's not large and tender only if you push hard when it's up, but still not painful at all. Risk is infection I'm told. will see at follow up, and a nice excuse for a meal out :)
Got a lovely slightly belated present today - DPS arrived with a Mulberry bag I wanted which was discontinued! After the slight lapse in memory of our wedding anniversary, and dh wanting a new bike frame, he pulled out all stops and remembered the one I wanted... and found it at an outlet! Quite impressed, despite the 5 years wanting it!
I quite like Isadora - especially like how Arti you incorporated "adore it" into the mix! Not so keen on Christabel - mainly for the reasons your dp says too Lady. Love Victoria, and the shortened version that you call her Beans - as I'm not keen on the other nickname. We always call ds's teacher "Vicky" between the mums - she looks about 12 so its indearing though.
Brilliant news Hons!

JustRubes · 13/05/2014 18:54

I had quite a lot of tennis lessons as a child and teenager. Love it but haven't played since we lived in Devon as we rented a house and the main house where our landlord lived had a tennis court. I finally found something I could rival dh at, and I was winning the first set, then twisted my ankle and he had to carry me off. Parent's thought it was hilarious as they knew how excited I was to find something I could potentially beat dh at, so I was trying to continue but we thought I'd broken my ankle so Mum just took photo's, and dh smugly got me a bag of peas!
Think I'll start playing again soon - now I'm advancing in age somewhat! DS is keen for lessons too.

beans37 · 13/05/2014 20:27

Ottilie. What a funky name! Just read it on another post. Love it!

Rubes, I have similar feelings about tennis. Is about the only sport I can hold my own against DH!

JustRubes · 13/05/2014 20:33

Ha beans maybe we should sort out doubles, with some pimms a lot of wine to follow and celebrate our victory!

OverlookedConfection · 13/05/2014 22:51

Hello everyone! Just popping in. Loving the name chat. I wanted M to be called Edward (nn Ned) but DH said no. I nearly called DD2 Catherine (and now wish I had, really) but we went a bit far out (for us) with our choice. DD1 still has my favourite name in the world.

Am off to Majorca on Thursday for a long weekend. Longest time I have left the children and they are already playing up a little. The parents and brother of my dear friend who died are buried there (tho she is buried here) and so her sister and I are going to the vault to work out what to write about her to recognise it in Spain. They had a villa there for many years (which I went to about 15 times!) so it's a real home from home, although we are staying elsewhere as the villa was sold some time ago. I was meant to do a mega diet but, er, didnt so have bought a selection of sarongs. Ha ha ha. A burka might be better. Also having the period from hell so hope it's abated a little by then or I'll be in jeans.

Love tennis. Haven't played for years though.

Weeing - M goes for about 3 weeks dry and then has a spectacular week of wetting. That boy has a huge bladder. I am going to try again after half term as we are away that week and can't bear him to wee in someone else's bed. Lots of his pals are still in pull ups. ROund here they won't even put you on the list for the enuresis clinic until they are 6, so we have a while to go.

Happy birthday to A for tomorrow, Arti. How time has whizzed by. A year already. Lovely

Night night

Honsandrevels · 14/05/2014 19:46

I don't think you'd look P G Woodhouse mad, lady but I see your point!

Last time I played tennis I was 10 and using a wooden racket. I'd love to be good at it.

Hope the trip goes well Sybs.

Gah Dd2 refused to use the toilet or potty today. Disaster. I ended up cutting a hole in a nappy (which is a tip I read on a mn thread) it is meant to help them get used to the feeling of fresh air around their bottom. I couldn't let her hold it in, she was so upset. Some of the children on the thread I was reading were 6 when they stopped needing a nappy to poo in.

Indith · 14/05/2014 21:37

ladyt if you don't give this child a wonderful poncy name I shall be very disappointed.

I know a M W called O t T a V I A which I think is lovely and very you. Shame you chose such a similar name for your first one Grin .

I'm sure you will think of something.

I really need to get on the computer so I can scroll back as I type and catch up. On phone now so will not attempt it now. trouble is I introduced dh to 2048. I then got annoyed that he kept taking my phone to play it so he found where to play online and has taken over the laptop instead. If I am not doing uni work on it he is playing his stupid game.

Am in bed about to go sleep. I hate the hours in doing at the moment. Give me 3 long days over this mix of earlies and lates any time I am totally done in. Doesn't help that I was ill over the weekend after the viva and then started placement on the Monday so didn't get the chance to recover and I've been up at the sparrows fart every morning since.

tonight I was about to go brush my teeth at 9 to go to bed and dd came down with s nose bleed. Her bed looks like a slaughter house and every one of the steps in the TWO flights of stairs she came down in bathed in big splodges of blood.

Have no carpet cleaner, have scrubbed as best I can, given her a new pillow and swapped her duvet round to the non bloody end. I'll change the bed and deal with the rest in the morning.

ShadyLadyT · 14/05/2014 23:28

I can only pass muster at tennis, so would therefore really enjoy some lessons. Just for fun. However, I used to play badminton with DP sometimes many moons ago, as he enjoys it. When the new village hall is built in our village later this year, apparently badminton will be possible so we may play again.

Indith, that sounds very tiring. And nosebleeds are a bugger. I am sure the chosen name won't ultimately be knowingly underponced so don't fret Grin I have pondered Marguerite (I do like my flower names) so not a million miles from your DD, but DP didn't go for it. Actually Beans, I would have considered Ottilie for DD1 so you are very much on the right lines. Problem is that I know a complete toad who called her daughter that and I couldn't choose anything connected with her. I know that sounds petty but names are so emotional somehow. She called her other daughter Lydia which is another totally gorgeous name, but same problem (I am spacing as she is precisely the sort of person to Google her kids' names).

Oh dear, Hons, but it's bound to be two steps forward and one back. I suppose you have to be gently encouraging/consistent without pressure and it's a bit of a tightrope (like with my DD1 and food, and in fact with most kids on anything they are digging their heels in with...)

I hope you have a lovely, if rather poignant, trip, Sybs. or OC as I should learn to call you. And I bet you look lovely, daft girl.

Happy Birthday to little A for tomorrow - unbelievable.

Seriously, if anyone can think of any names they think I might like, do feel free to share. I certainly won't be asking those berks who lurk on the Names Board Grin I think you know the sorts of names I like but basically, I like Victorian and Edwardian names, Roman names, flower names....Zinnia is another name I wonderered about but they look a bit too much like Dahlias and DP has said "not on your nelly".

I think you need to describe the Mulberry bag, Rubes! I've always fancied a Bayswater.

Had my Italian lesson tonight - we have had a 5 month hiatus! I like doing it but I don't do even a fraction of what I should do to get the best out of it.

My cricketers are still sans a ground for Sunday. I have spent about two days on the phone. Bit stressful.

Oh bum, it's quite late.

Artichook · 15/05/2014 06:34

Lady, I'm now getting unhealthy obsessed with thinking of poncetastic names for your baby. Have you considered Aurelia? I do like that. Also Clementine, Augusta, Cecily, Constance, Patience, Lettice, Violet or, and I will keep suggesting this 'til you break: Dorothea (or even Theodora). Matilda is lovely too, more common but lovely. Or Beatrix.

I used to like Ottillie but I told a friend I was thinking of it for DD2 and she said "Otterly!? Do you love otters?" Now that's the only way I can hear it.

Hons, sorry to hear about the poo regression. I can't think of anything to suggest but take heart from her having managed once now.

DS' birthday was very sweet. He really got into the spirit of eating cake and opening presents. I feel a touch broody again which I'm totally shocked by as I have felt so complete since having DS. I'm sure it's temporary and a reaction to DS growing-up. At least I hope it's temporary as four is not on the cards.

Last night I was unable to sleep so looked up my MN posts on the thread for the days DD2 and DS were born. It was very nice to see posts from old names who never drop by anymore. Even this time last year was still saw Cat, Summer, Jump and Pingu.

ShadyLadyT · 15/05/2014 07:58

Thanks for the names Arti - one of the names you mention is already on our shortlist! Another couple we have certainly considered. And another is out as on of DP's sister's kids is called it. I like Dorothea but I am not as crackers about it as you are. However - Theodora is wonderful and it's the first name I tried to get DP to agree to for DD3. She was a Byzantine Goddess as well! But he doesn't like it.

Now going for a number 4? That would be a first on the thread! Someone's got to do it! How sweet your DS scoffed cake.

Yes, it's such a shame when people drift off and don't post although all the ones you mention do pop back sometimes.

JustRubes · 15/05/2014 09:30

Zinnia! I like it! Although it's slightly reminds me of Zinfandel - maybe that's why Hmm

JustRubes · 15/05/2014 09:32

Of those I like Violet and Matilda. I know two babies with those names.

I really like the word poncetastic!!! I'm going to think up some poncetastic names now.

JustRubes · 15/05/2014 09:33

Poncella Grin

JustRubes · 15/05/2014 09:39

I like classic names. Some may say boring though.
I can barely remember our girls list. I think we only agreed on about 2 or 3 One of which was her name now. And the other was one of her now middle names! (Grace) I wanted Georgia, dh didn't AT ALL. She was very nearly Isabel. I also wanted Nina, or Lola (but dh kept singing "her name was Lola, she was a showgirl, yellow feathers in her hair and her dress cut down to there....." ) you get my drift.

JustRubes · 15/05/2014 09:43

I keep remembering more now that were on my list!
Claudia
Evalina
Ava
Evelyn
Lara

JustRubes · 15/05/2014 09:46

Have a nice time Sybs! Sorry about the bedroom massacre scene Indith. We've had that. Not pretty.
Must get on with housekeeping stuff.
Sorry for the rubes overload!

Mckayz · 15/05/2014 09:48

I wanted Layla but my Mum started singing "Layla, you've got me on my knees" and I was put off. Especially as I have gone through my life being sang at all the time. Even by random customers at work after reading my name badge.

Lucille is nice. Love Arti's suggestions. Cecily and Augusta are lovely.

Artichokes · 15/05/2014 10:09

At what age would you guys allow ear peircing? DD1 will be eight in August and desperately wants her ears pierced. I was saying she had to wait 'til she was ten but now I am wondering why I think ten is ok but eight is not.

Honsandrevels · 15/05/2014 11:31

Indith Cold water and salt is what you need with blood. Hot water and some cleaners can seal the stain. Nosebleeds are awful, poor dd.

Arti It depends on whether the school allow earrings. Dd's school say no earrings at all so that makes the decision easy. I had mine done v early at 4. My holes have now closed up but they get yellow guck in them and can be v sore. I'm hoping showing them to the dds will put them off!

A neo-natal nurse ruined my chances of dd2 being called Elspeth after saying 'you what? Elspwhat? Do you mean Elizabeth?' Otterly is quite sweet! Otters are cute.

Thanks for the kind words re dd2. I'm moaning on here but am kindness and patience itself to dd even though inside I'm almost screaming with frustration!

ShadyLadyT · 15/05/2014 11:54

Funnily enough Arti my Mum let me have mine done at 8, largely because my sister was 6 years older than me and had just had hers done and I nagged like HEY (I was a very effective nagger as a child). DP and I have agreed that DD1 can get them done when she leaves primary school, which I feel is a nice 'rites of passage' sort of thing. Although to be honest, if she desperately wants them done before then I will probably consider it. I had to beat DP down from 16. He is living in the Stone Age, I tell you, and is in for a big shock as the years progress. I think go with your instinct.

Hons, the girls have brought me to the very verge of tears of frustration so many times Grin I really, really did not think we would ever get DD1 out of nappies generally. She was 3 years 3 months as it was. But it happened, and the poo thing with your DD2 will happen. Have you tried sticker charts? But they only work if your kid is jazzed by sticker charts.

Actually Rubes you have mentioned one of the others on our shortlist of three!

Kayz - DP loves that Marillion song Grin I am afraid he would have been one of the numpties singing it to you, or at least under his breath...

I was called Serena for the first three days of my life and I quite like that but DP is not so keen and also he thinks it is a jinx as I was such a bad sleeper who cried perpetually. I also suggested Marina but he said that we've got the name of one crap car in the family as it is Hmm (For those of you not born in the 1970s, an Austin Marina was indeed a crap car, often to be found in the colour of orange, fawn or brown).

Back to the drawing board!

Mckayz · 15/05/2014 12:00

Marina would make me think of Stingray.

There are 2 women in the office of DH's employer that share names with models of that make of car. DH finds it a bit amusing if they are both copied in on the same email.

ShadyLadyT · 15/05/2014 12:05

I don't think I have ever seen Stingray! But I do like Marina. But it's a definite no from DP. It's funny, I don't like the name Maria, but it's only one letter away. A lot of names are like that. Such a world of difference between Edna and Edina...Also, some names sound nice but don't look nice written down, or vice versa. A colleague of DP's had a little girl called Eliot a couple of weeks ago. I don't like the way it looks, but when you say it it actually sounds very pretty.
