I broke the old thread! Step this way, step this way.

For those doing blw I can recommend a shower curtain under the highchair. It saved so much time and fuss when I weaned dd1!

Olimoss · 28/11/2013 14:19

Nope, definite Grinch here, nothing baby-Christmas at all with no plans to. I did buy J a present though. Yay me top parent!

Dog has a Santa hat....

I love Xmas, I'm just a bit averse to cute. Can't help it.

pinkapples · 28/11/2013 15:02

Are any mummies with sick babies going to the doctor I don't want to be an overreacting mummy and at the moment I'm using nose drops Calpol and a nose sucker thing and menthol crystals any other suggestions

hedgehogy · 28/11/2013 15:20

I read that elsewhere on here Sarah (about the car seats). We've been layering up too.

Sorry that other babies are suffering too, I hope they all get better soon.

Good idea about the pharmacy rrreow. Will also check with the HV to see what she recommends as she didn't mention brands in the session (she may have some of the healthy start ones mentioned above and just didn't tell us).

I've heard that their hands get cold and that it's normal.

We haven't really bothered with first Christmas stuff either. We've bought a lovely personalised stocking and sack that will last through the years, but no mention of first Christmas on them. I was tempted by a cute outfit saying baby's first Christmas but decided to get a couple of lovely dresses instead. I couldn't resist a first Christmas bauble though; we normally have matching baubles but I like the idea of picking a new one every year.

SunnyL · 28/11/2013 15:23

Nah don't get a shower curtain for blw. Just get a hungry Labrador. She even cleans under sofas Grin.

Hmmm the vitamins thing is interesting. I knew we had to wean at 6 months because their iron stores run out then. Do they not get enough vitamins from food though?

Operation nap time entered phase 3 today unexpectantly. We're trying to train her to sleep in the pram without going for a 15 minute walk first. Phase 1 was reducing the walk to a 2 minute push round the cul-de-sac. Phase 2 was meant to be rocking her outside the front door. Phase 3 was going to sleep in the pram indoors without rocking etc. managed it today I think because I had friends round and the house was noisy.

Phase 5 is the cot.....

MadameJ · 28/11/2013 20:58

Can I ask how many daytime naps are your little ones having and what sort of time?? I appear to be really struggling at the moment to keep everyone happy mainly in regards to sleep :-(

pinkapples · 28/11/2013 22:09

Theiah has hardly any through the week at nursery maybe 20 mins here and there but we try for a lunchtime one and then afternoon ish

When were at home she does more consistently a nap about 9am after being awake between 6-7am then one after lunch then one about 4-5pm each for about an hour sometimes more although since she's ill it's been more the last couple of days

MadameJ · 28/11/2013 22:19

I think this is where im going wrong as I have stopped encouraging the tea time sleep and dd was at melt down point by bedtime which was horrible!! My problem is dd1 is very needy after her nap and dd2 will only feed to sleep unless we go for a walk or a car journey so I am really struggling, I definitely don't want a repeat of tonight though!

AlohaMama · 29/11/2013 08:55

Our naps are a bit variable, it depends when she wakes up. Usually she wakes 6.30, needs a nap by 8, usually for an hour. Then we'll go out and she'll normally sleep again if we're walking, maybe mid-morning.That oen is a bit variable as it depends where we are and how loud it is. Then around 12, and around 4. The 4 o'clock one is only 45 mins but without it we can't make it to bed time in one piece. Bed is around 6.30pm.

On vits I read something in Boots parenting magazine this morning - it said Vit D is recommended from 6 months, unless you are using formula in their weaning e.g. if doing baby cereal with formula. I'm not sure of the amount of formula you'd need, it says 500ml but doesn't specify what period. 500ml a day??

massagegirl · 29/11/2013 09:09

I have an amazing no napping baby. Wakes at 7 and will sometimes have a lunchtime sleep, afternoon nap but morning naps don't happen unless in buggy and then he looks around for an hour before sleeping. She does 12 hours straight at night so guess that's when she rests!

curlyclaz13 · 29/11/2013 09:11

Naps are erratic at best here. Sometimes he has a couple of hours sometimes 20 minutes.
We haf our first proper laugh in the bath last night ! I squirted him with water and got a proper little giggle from him !

MrsBri · 29/11/2013 09:54

Naps here are getting into a kind of pattern.

Amy wakes between 8-8.30, then naps at about 10. The length varies, mostly it's about 45 mins, but the other day I had to wake her to go out at 11.30!

She will then nap again 1.5-2 hours after waking for an hour or so.

Then again 1.5-2 hours after waking for an epic 2-3 hour nap.

After that we go into bedtime wind down, though she does go to bed quite late sometimes, but the upside is the lie in! And she doesn't want to play in the evening, just sit with us watching TV!

When we go out I try to do it at nap time so she just drops off in the pram. :-)

MadameJ · 29/11/2013 12:36

Thanks everyone it's useful to know what everyone else does as my first never slept day or night so this is all new!

Mrs81 · 29/11/2013 13:09

It's quite reassuring to read about the varied nappers. DS usually has 1.5-2 hrs over the day in 2-3 naps. He sleeps c11 hrs at night (but not in one go!).

I read somewhere that 6m babies "ought" to have 4hrs by day and 10hrs by night. But as we all know, babies can't read and they're all different!

hedgehogy · 29/11/2013 13:27

DD can only stay awake for around 2 hrs before she needs a nap. She usually has three naps during the day, each one lasting 1 1/2 to 3 hours. She usually sleeps through at night, so napping this much isn't a problem. She will not nap if we go out though, it doesn't matter how long we walk for!

Sunbeam18 · 29/11/2013 14:53

God, these naps you talk about are a foreign country to me. We get one morning nap for about 20 mins and then an afternoon nap of about 40 mins. That's it. And he doesn't sleep well at night - at least 3 wake ups from 7pm till 7am ( 11pmish, 2ish, 5 ish). What is your secret???

MadameJ · 29/11/2013 15:30

Well dd is off to see the gp, ever since her injections on Monday she has being really unsettled, screams all the time and has being refusing to feed ( this girl usually loves her boob) and today her eyes look sore and sticky!

SunnyL · 29/11/2013 16:17

I think Lily sounds most like MrsBri's description of daytime naps. Generally 3 naps a day each 1-3hours long. The 3 hr ones are never predicable but a happy bonus when they do come.

We're generally in bed 6.30-7pm at night. We used to try keeping her awake til 7 then start the bedtime routine but the meltdowns were becoming catastrophic and after reading the Easy Sleep Baby decided to start bedtime earlier and now she goes to sleep really easily once we've done the 4 B's (bath, book, bottle and bed).

rrreow · 29/11/2013 17:40

We have about 3-4 naps a day. It's definitely work putting him down for a nap though, he doesn't just sleep automatically because he's tired. I'll watch for the cues (grumpy, rubbing eyes, yawning, less 'focussed') and then feed him lying down on our bed after which he will sleep about 45mins-1.5 hours. Previously he never did more than 45 mins (1 sleepcycle), but last week he's started doing longer naps as long as he's face down on the bed and not too much noise.

Loose schedule is:
9am - up for the day
10.30 or 11am - 1st nap (usually a long one)
2.30pm - 2nd nap (sometimes it's long, sometimes it's short)
5.30 or 6pm - 3rd nap (usually a short one as it's my SiL putting him down then and has more trouble or he doesn't stay asleep)
9pm - bedtime

I'm pretty gung ho about getting him to nap as he's just so difficult when he's overtired (especially as that usually happens later in the day when I'm also dealing with DS1). It's difficult though as I'm not responsible for his final nap, but I am the one who has to deal with the fallout if it doesn't work out. Drives me up the wall.

He feeds pretty much 2 hourly still throughout the day & night.

Hope she's alright MadameJ, did the GP have any suggestions?

OP posts:
MadameJ · 29/11/2013 19:30

Just got back, gp said it's likely a combination of teeth, injections and a virus. She recommended feeding her on the bed or on a pillow instead of cradling her as my arm could be causing her pain. Fed her on a pillow and she has being great, no screaming or thrashing, why did this not occur to me??

pinkapples · 29/11/2013 22:09

Oh no for poorly babies Sad we've been to the gp too and Theiah has antibiotics for a chest infection was fuming when she said I should have come sooner given that I've been twice with her cough and been told that it will go away on its own in a bit!! Angry

Anyway she's hopefully on the mend and were off to longleat tomorrow to see Santa and the big tree and we have tickets for the Santa train! Grin

pinkapples · 29/11/2013 22:09

Oh and since I'm feeling Christmassy the tree is going up this weekend too!

MadameJ · 29/11/2013 22:24

That's so annoying pink, hopefully now she has the antibiotics she will feel much better soon. My little lady does seem a little better tonight and has fed beautifully, our gp visit was quite successful as we saw a duty doctor and she had breastfed her 4 children and clearly knew her stuff in regards to this and other baby issues, it really was refreshing!!

Enjoy longleat Pink, it certainly looks amazing but unfortunately a bit far for us, we are off to Thomas land next weekend which my eldest is very much looking forward to especially when I told her it's guaranteed to snow :-D

SunnyL · 30/11/2013 02:32

Oh I am really enjoying tonight. Since 11.30 i have changed 3 pooey nappies, fed her 5 times, rocked her umpteen times and slept for 45minutes. Have now dosed her with calpol although Im not really sure what is wrong. Its not teeth but she has got nappy rash for the first time though it didnt seem to bother her during the daytime.

DH finishes work at 3am. She can be his problem then.
