Is there a service you can use, Katz, or is the thought of a train on a strike day with two small children more than body and soul can bear?

katzg · 15/07/2006 14:49

there might be a 'train service' but from what i can gather it will involve a coach to derby (1hr) then train from derby to london (3hr) sorry but much i really want to meet up with you all 4hrs travelling - nope!

teabelly · 15/07/2006 19:52

Trib - if train strike then we'll drive (may anyway) and park where we used to when I drove in to London for work - just round corner from East Finchley tube, so no problems there.

Katz I don't blame you honey - 4 hours mixed travelling would be a nightmare...really really hope the strike is called off, fingers crossed!

sfxmum · 16/07/2006 12:19

hello all
katz - yes i can see what a nightmare that much travelling would be, still hope the strike gets called off

pretty day here, nice and warm, i worked yesterday so am hoping to just chill today. once dh and dd wake up i think we are going to the gardens for a picnic, and some duck chasing as usual
had lovely lie in today dd was feeding all night not quite sure what is going on. and i have an annoying cold so i guess extra sleep much deserved
hope you all have a nice day

2Happy · 17/07/2006 09:04

MOrning all. Sorry to hear about your worries about the train strike, I hope they call it off after all.
Well we survived dsis's wedding. We drove to Newcaslte airport where we met up with dothersis her dh and dd and hired a people carrier to drive all the way to Kent. 11 hours stuck in a car all told, though only 8 on the way back yesterday as the traffic wasn't so bad. All in all, I'm quite happy I decided I couldn't do the journey two weekends in a row, even though it means missing the meet up, and particularly now that there might be a train strike! Anyway, the wedding was very good, even if the vicar suddenly remembered halfway through that he'd forgotten to get them to do the "I do" bit!
My childminder is on holiday this week, so I now have to race round tidying the house as mil is coming over to babysit while I go to work. Cue overtired, over-sugar-treated baby when I get home!

lummox · 17/07/2006 15:28

think we will probably be scuppered if there is a train strike too.

guess it's much too late to change to the Sunday?

katzg · 17/07/2006 16:04

i think we could make the sunday if our tickets will allow will have to phone the trainline

OP posts:
tribpot · 17/07/2006 17:04

I'm meant to be meeting other people for another picnic on the Sunday, so this could be tricky, plus EYM's train home is on Saturday! But equally we are really going to struggle to get into London if the strike goes ahead, will already be pretty tough on dh, so we may just need to play this by ear.

My second picnic is at a country park near Luton, so anyone who does want to join is very welcome.

sfxmum · 17/07/2006 21:39

really hope the strike is cancelled
quite tired dd only asleep at 9, lets see how many times up during night, far too hot here.

katzg · 18/07/2006 09:33

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh night from hell last night, DD2 went down all right but woke up at 1am and we didn't manage to get her back to sleep until 4am, so we have all over slept and i have just got into work!

OP posts:
teabelly · 18/07/2006 13:52

Afternoon ladies

I am so glad others are having the 'wonderful' nights we're having too! Too HOT HOT HOT, and despite having the fans on no-one slept very well...and then the noise of the fans meant I didn't hear my alarm, although luckily for me I woke anyway only 20 mins late - not quite as bad as for you Katz, but I know how you're feeling today!

2Happy - meant to say, glad the wedding went off ok - gosh all that driving - I hope you had working airconditioning...I say working as a big hint re the condition of ours!!

Re meeting on the Sunday instead of the Saturday this weekend...I think EYM has booked hotel rooms as well for Friday night and may not be able to change this??

sfxmum · 18/07/2006 16:39

speaking of sleepless nights, dd was on hourly wake up from 1am. 'mummy boobie'[skock]was the general request, water too helps.
so tired still at work, lets hope hope no more buses brake down while i am traveling in them had it twice today
oh my fragile patience!

katzg · 19/07/2006 09:27

just spoken to the railway people and they are hodling more talks today - so fingers crossed.

OP posts:
tribpot · 19/07/2006 10:32

dh is doing what I had feared, i.e. now the CPAP has 'stopped being useful' and he is feeling worse again. Every single time we try something new. I half think this is working up to 'being ill' when his mum is here tomorrow (I have to go to a meeting so I won't be here, don't think he wants to deal with her on his own).

teabelly · 19/07/2006 11:36

Trib grrrr, men sometimes! I suggest you stand your ground if you believe he's behaving so on purpose. I know we all joke about how crap men are when they're ill, and it's obviously harder when they genuinely are ill like your DH, but that doesn't mean he can't lay it on thicker than it is . As the wage earner you have responsibilities (that you don't necessarily want) and he should be able to deal with his mum, or tell her not to come if he's not up to it...and so ends my sermon!

Right now ladies I have to warn those of you with just the one kiddy to be very careful about how you talk to your lo when telling them off, or actually just talk about anything. DS had two blinders this week, and we're only just half way through!

  1. DS (on phone) 'Hello Grandad, I just call you Grandad because it's not nice to say fat to people, but you are fat aren't you? Mummy says so...' - have to add that my dad is the spit of Giant Haystacks

  2. on discovering that his stickle brick creation was different to when he'd put it away...'Hey this looks different...daddy have you been touching my toys? Now I'm not angry with you, I just want you to tell me if you have been playing with it?'

so now becareful what you say - it comes back to bite you on the bum!

lua · 19/07/2006 11:42

LOL, teabelly!

The nursery director told me this "funny" story about my DD, where they are all talking about going to france and nursery womans asks: How would you get there? They all discuss for a while how to get a train through the sea...when my DD says

  • the point is that we are going on a train!
tribpot · 19/07/2006 12:33

Thanks tea - no, he's not trying to get me to cancel my meeting (which I would willingly, godawful 5 hour team meeting) I just sometimes feel like he doesn't ever want to get well and have a normal life.

He's planning to send the MIL to Homebase anyway - she bought him a planter and some herb seeds for his birthday (and compost) but neglected anything to put the compost in (the planter is just a sort of ornamental container for pots). So she's promised to get some pots but they can't go in her car as it's not worth moving ds' car seat and they can't go in ours cos dh isn't allowed to drive any more (and MIL not insured, shame).

Snorting at the little ones with their funny (aka mortifying) expressions.

lua · 19/07/2006 12:37

Trib, I see what you are saying... I think sometimes illness becomes your identity doesn't?
Don't know the answer, DH is the same in a much smaller scale (his back problems), but want to let you know you have my full sympathies!
