Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Spotty I've had enough and have instigated cc. Every 5 minutes he gets a cuddle. On 4th one and he's calming. I'm fucked off with getting up to cuddle him all fucking night.

Stacks · 02/09/2013 03:57

CC isn't a fool proof solution. T has been up twice now, 12:45 and 3:45. Much better than he was sleeping, but much worse than lat night. I maybe just broke it by feeding him too, but I didn't want him crying for ages and keeping me out of bed longer. There's no point thing to make a hungry baby settle.

I really hope consistent sleep becomes the norm. I need to start getting real sleep as does he. CC is meant to work within a week if you're consistent. It's also meant to be bad the first day and get easier. Mine was easy the first day and getting harder! :(

SpottyTeacakes · 02/09/2013 05:43

Ds never usually wakes up so luckily I don't need to try it. I'm wondering if its teeth or a growth spurt. Up at 5:30 Sad

Stacks ds only started sleeping through when I stopped feeding him at night, obviously I still fed/feed him if I can't settle him

WLmum · 02/09/2013 06:31

Urgh - early to bed means early to rise. Up at 5.30 - I fed her in our bed in the vain hope that she might go back to sleep but no. She must have taken lots as she's been sick 3x already.
stacks it might be because you fed him but its always a judgement call. Like spotty T and dd2 only started sleeping through when I stopped all night feeds, however with T it has been a bit more 2 steps forward and 1 back for various reasons. If I feel that I really need to feed as she just won't settle I only offer the slow side for decreasing durations. Then she gets sleepy and is back in her cot before she's fully asleep.
Later on dd1&2 got into the habit of waking for cuddles so I had to do more versions of cc like pidj
You're not at the end of a week yet are you? Try not to lose heart, its all progress from where you were.

Maryland2013 · 02/09/2013 08:44

All this sleep talk has got me thinking- is it really bad that DS generally feeds to sleep? Not always, sometimes he finishes his bottle has a little cuddle then he's asleep (no rocking etc).
In the daytime I lie on the bed with him and ignore him (!) until he falls asleep or cuddle him when he's v tired and he drops off.
I know though that if I put him in the cot awake but sleepy he just wakes up and starts rolling and trying to crawl... No way will he sleep.

Do I need to change how he goes to bed or can it wait??!!

PurplePidjin · 02/09/2013 08:50

He woke at 12:45, i dozed off with him in the chair so he went down at 1:45. Then woke and shouted at 2:30. That pisses me off, he needs to learn to go back to sleep and me helping isn't helping iyswim? The whole process took an hour, which is the same length of time it takes gently, and he put himself back to sleep at 3:30 waking just before 7 lie in!

By the third set of 5 minutes he was hysterical for just seconds then shouting at me crossly. Then intermittent shouts. Then, because he was ramping up when i went in, i left him grumping. 15 minutes later he was asleep. A week ago, I'd have been horrified at trying it. He would have just got crosser and crosser and I'd have got upset. Something's changed and he's ready to learn, just like with weaning.

WillYouDoTheFandango · 02/09/2013 08:56

We had a similar night to everyone else. He woke up for a shout at 11, back down after a cuddle. Woke at 2 for a bottle and then up at 6:30.

Maryland, that's exactly what I do but lying next to him ignoring him is now taking up to 2 hours so that's why I'm trying to change it.

Glad it's working for you both Pidj,

DS is deep DEEP into separation anxiety. He's wailed the house down for the last 3 days unless he is physically touching someone (doesn't matter who). I think this is why cc isn't working; he's terrified I won't come back. I'm going to get the

WLmum · 02/09/2013 08:57

maryland not wrong at all if it works for you. It's only a problem if its a problem for you. I generally feed T to sleep as its usually when I'm doing school reading with dd1 so it keeps her quiet! In due course I'll change things around but this is the way it works for me just now. Day naps she's usually rocked to sleep in the pram out for a walk or in the garden.

WillYouDoTheFandango · 02/09/2013 08:58

DS messed with my phone.

Get the NCSS and give that a go. I'm fucked off now with spending hours everyday getting him to nap/sleep at night.

Stacks · 02/09/2013 09:14

Maryland I'm still pretty much feeding DS to sleep. It's just before he's always woken on transfer and taken a while to rock to sleep before a successful put down in the cot. Now I feed to sleep/sleepy and put him down, say night night and leave the room. Like Pidg says, I think he was ready to learn to settle himself, as the first night was so quick and easy for both of us.

I think it's common for these things to get better then worse though. Something about the LO realising that maybe this new way isn't a one off but here to stay, and showing their displeasure. I hope that's all we've run into here.

Last night was the first night I fed him since starting CC 3 nights ago. It took half hour for him to self settle at 12:45, which wasn't too bad. Though I fed at 3:45 as he was sounding very upset on the wake up, not just grumbling. I fed for 10 minutes then put him sown awake, and he was quiet within 2 minjtes and asleep in 10 (just occasionally talking to himself in the mean time). Then slept til 7:30.

We're 10 minutes into shouting for this mornings nap though, which isn't too bad so far but he doesn't sound close to settling yet.

Willyou check out eBay or amazon second hand for the ncss, I got mine for £3.50. There's a lot of good common sense stuff in there, even if you do eventually try CC again. I think seperation anxiety could screw all this up for us here, but I can't keep putting off sleep training till there's not a chance of teething/development to screw it up.

Anyone else still have a toothless baby?

Sorry others had bad nights, I'm grumpy today with just two wake ups, don't know how I managed the usual 6-8!

Maryland2013 · 02/09/2013 09:18

Thanks Willyou and WL, that's really helpful. I'm glad it's not just me I was worried in setting myself up for problems but I guess there's plenty of time for 're training'?

Sounds like good progress Pidj :)

Have other people tried NCSS with success?

Maryland2013 · 02/09/2013 09:23

Stacks sometimes the extra sleep is just as bad as less- I made the mistake of going back to bed yesterday when DS had his nap and felt hideous! Your body just needs to get used to less wake ups I guess?!
It sounds like you're doing well though..

3 teeth here and can feel the ridges of the next ones coming (top front two- DS has a random one on the top but at the side!)

Stacks · 02/09/2013 09:30

Just a quick wee share. Someone linked this to me the other day and I thought it was good To parents of small children

SpottyTeacakes · 02/09/2013 09:35

Ds is still toothless. I start my new job today Sad

Stacks · 02/09/2013 09:37

Argh, he cried to quiet then my FIL came round and woke him up shouting up that he was here.

Stacks · 02/09/2013 09:53

Spotty good luck with the new job! How many hours are you working today?

SpottyTeacakes · 02/09/2013 09:55

Only five today, but until 6:30 and I then have to pick both children up from my parents and then come home. They usually start going to bed at that time so they will be knackered. Hopefully the will just get used to it.

WLmum · 02/09/2013 09:57

T is still toothless, but bottom gums look suspiciously fat so not sure for how long.

Good luck spotty

WLmum · 02/09/2013 09:58

stacks I've seen that before but it's great isn't it.

MamaTo3Boys · 02/09/2013 10:03

I found that not feeding them during the night worked for me when doing CC. Instead I offered them water or juice. Think they just gave up waking up for a feed as they realised they weren't getting one lol

MamaTo3Boys · 02/09/2013 10:03

Spotty good luck with the new job Smile

MamaTo3Boys · 02/09/2013 10:05

Oliver has 6 teeth. 2 at the bottom and 4 at the top. They came through in sets though. He got his bottom 2 one offer the other at 4 months. Then nothing for a while then at 7 months the top four all came through within 2 days.

halestone · 02/09/2013 11:32

Sorry to hear of all the bad nights.

Ispy your holiday sounds lovely i hope N's black eye is ok.

I normally feed H to sleep but more often now, i have to put Bruno Mars on repeat and rock her to sleep. Its down to about 3-4 plays and shes gone, theres alot of fighting though. I'm convinced H is intent on pulling every hair out of my head. The good news is that it only takes 10-15 minutes to transfer her to her cot now though and if she wakes i hum the song and she goes back to sleep. When she wakes up during the night i put her in my bed then transfer her back to the cot when shes deep asleep.

Spotty hope you have a lovely first day at workThanks

Stacks i love that link.

Equimum · 02/09/2013 11:37

Good luck Spotty

I'm still feeding F to sleep. He just doesn't settle otherwise, but he tends to just suddenly make transitions with sleep, so I'm still hopeful we'll naturally progress when the time is right.

Busy week here. My horse moved out of full livery at the weekend, so I'm now having to go to him twice a day, with F in tow Shock. Then tomorrow, F has his first settling session Sad.

Barbeasty · 02/09/2013 11:55

Good luck spotty. If bedtime is a nightmare could your parents get them into pyjamas, teeth cleaned etc before you collect them? Then you can get them to bed quickly once you're home.

I think I'll wait until A sleeps most of the night before not feeding to sleep. Now I'm at work the evening is a bit of a cluster feed, until he's asleep.

But then we'll put him in with DD, so hopefully he'll settle ok. That's my cunning plan anyway.
