New thread time!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

And yes, I'd heard of homelands Scarlet and it seemed v popular - might look at the DVD box set, or see of its repeated at all. One of those things that seemed reall popular and I wished I was watching it iyswim Smile

scarletfingernail · 25/07/2012 17:41

I think Sid and his toys could be scary Biscuits.

Biscuitsandtea · 25/07/2012 17:57

I guess so, although I think when we were in the car we'd maybe had it on for 1 minute? Not even sure we'd pulled off the drive Grin

Ds1 is also scared of the jack in the box on the credits at the start of his spot DVD. And the dark bit at the start of ITNG Hmm

scarletfingernail · 25/07/2012 18:06

Aww bless him.

hawthers · 25/07/2012 19:05

DS1 is scared of captain beaky, lord tumble, the dinosaur museum in peppa pig, farmyard animal noises.... I could go on.

scarletfingernail · 25/07/2012 19:13

Confused worried now that my DS is immune to kids scary stuff. A few U rated Disney films wouldn't have de-sensitised him already would they?

He does worry about things. He won't watch Pippin anymore because he hates it when she wanders off and Auntie Mabel can't find her. And Stuart Little in the washing machine is a no-go.

PetWoman · 25/07/2012 19:16

Happy belated birthday Purple!

Yy to the early wake-ups in the heat. DS went to sleep ok last night but not-so-D H was coughing and woke him up when we came to bed. So I thought an 11pm feed on both sides might keep DS going till about 7am (as he usually goes about 8 hours without a feed at night). But no. He woke at 4.45am as usual but then didn't go back to sleep! I made DH get up at 5.30 (as he's on holiday, and I blamed him for my lack of sleep in the night!) so I could sleep a bit. I really hope the early-waking was a one-off caused by the heat, not the start of a new pattern...

Biscuits I'm sure DS2 will have a growth spurt and feed non-stop in the next few days to make up for the last fortnight. I've been giving DS both sides at each feed to try to fatten him up and he seems to be responding by dropping the number of feeds he has! Confused

Glad you've got the ABs Musical - hope they kick in soon.

Great potty-work Jaggy - I'm enjoying the daily updates. Grin

DreamingOfPeace · 25/07/2012 20:11

Blimey, I'm glad I don't weigh the dts :) sounds stressful! I am curious as to what they are though, o think they were last weighed at 10 weeks and they're 16 weeks today! Maybe I will. Then again, I had DD weighed at 12 weeks then nothing til 8- 9 months at hv check. So maybe i won't :)

Another one liking and genuinely informed by the potty updates jaggy. My fave so far is sticker for getting off.

Brooking for fast abx action for the boobage musical

Massive stokke tripp trapp envy here, not going to happen with two to buy...

Both babies so pukey today, 3 full changes each (& believe me, I only change if they're wet to the skin, I've enough laundry cheers), cranky, awful night with them last night. Fed up. Why are they still such shit sleepers?! The stuff you sent makes a lot of sense hawtherd but i feel like I'm failing before even beginning as we don't have any daytime routine...

pommedechocolat · 25/07/2012 20:22

On potty training - massive high fives working here as motivation. Easy! Another day with no accidents, she's obviously been ready for months Blush

dream - I'm with you on wondering where I'm going wrong. It went so right with dd1! I have found that doing the two meals now is providing me with a glimmer of routine although the heat has buggered it with extra feeds.

biscuits - I feel a bit the same with dd2 and weaning. I weaned dd1 earlier after reading every study going as she had all the physical signs and then some by 18 weeks and was so ready. I didn't feel like that with dd2 but any chance of it helping the reflux has spurred me on and she's doing well.

We have a dietician app at the hospital next week! Yay! Some medical help!

PetWoman · 25/07/2012 20:57

I'd keep up the non-weighing policy, Dream. I'm only having DS weighed cos the HV keeps making appointments to check him. If she hadn't noticed that he was falling down the centiles for height and weight, nobody would have thought there was a problem: DS feeds well and regularly, is content, alert, strong, sleeps well etc etc.

I was determine to ebf till 6 months but after a talk with the HV about possible early weaning I feel much more positive about letting DH start purees at around 19 weeks if DS can sit up. Why does the WHO recommend ebf till 6 months if it's fine to introduce some solids earlier? Dream were you mentioning a study into this? I'm confused...

Pomme great news re the dietician! Fx they help...

Bit worried here. Should have mentioned that DS had his 16-week jabs this afternoon (cried a bit but then was fine until 4 hours later when he seemed to have a fever so we gave calpol and he cheered up - this has been the pattern after each set of jabs). Anyway, DS finally woke up from his nap and I tried to feed him as usual and he just cried - the 'I'm not well' cry which we'd usually give calpol for, except he'd only had it 2 hours ago. Eventually we got him calm and he seemed to be giving tired cues so I took him back to his basket and I've just got him back to sleep again. But he's not fed since 5.45pm. What will tonight bring? More tears? Incessant feeding? Unusual sleepiness? Confused

The night will be kind to us all, and I'm brooking no argument!

pommedechocolat · 25/07/2012 21:35

pet - reason seems to be that it is suggested that all babies tummies will be ready at 6 months for food. Other studies show that it is food itself which develops the gut. I think it's a bit of a catch all recommendation myself but then I think all the guidelines are bollocks.

Google some things - it makes interesting reading. dream was talking about the EAT study. With dd1 I followed just fruit and veg abc gluten free cereal as I was ff. gluten is a funny one - seems to be that it is best introduced with bm even if that means pre 6 months.

Anyway, it is a more complex issue than the NHS guidelines would have us believe Grin

DreamingOfPeace · 25/07/2012 21:39

pet, I had to cancel appointments too as DD dropped more than two centile lines in the Red Book. Luckily my boys were banging it on in the beginning and my hv is very laissez faire.

Regarding weaning, there is no definite right or wrong. There's a huge study on at the minute to try and produce some evidence based guidelines, but as pomme says, there's no evidence early weaning is harmful. The study is to. Look at allergies amount other things I think. I've not read much on it but my friend whose baby's on it tells me some of the more interesting points. Her son is in the early weaning group, so was weaned at 3 months, 13 weeks. It is NOT about force feeding, all babies are ebf- giving formula takes them out the study as its another variable. The idea is 6 allergenic foods are introduced before 6 months- dairy, wheat, peanuts, sesame... can't remember others. The children are followed up to age 3 I think. But so far my friend says no bad results, and if a picture of any harm from either the control group (ebf to 6 months) or early weaning group were shown the study would end up pulled. It is food standards agency involved among others. On phone but will go and look as I'm waffling. But basically, to date there are theories around weaning but no definites. Is that what you found pomme?

DreamingOfPeace · 25/07/2012 21:45

www.eatstudy.co.uk/eat-study-info/ this is what my friends dc2 is on. She says provisionally the results are already showing decreased levels of iron deficiency anaemia in early weaning group.

DreamingOfPeace · 25/07/2012 21:45

And Food Standards Agency plus Medical Research Council is encouraging!

DreamingOfPeace · 25/07/2012 21:51

Actually, this is more useful for us about it, and why they think early weaning will be beneficial

http://www.eatstudy.co.uk/background/

DreamingOfPeace · 25/07/2012 21:52

trying again

DreamingOfPeace · 25/07/2012 21:59

Oh, x posts pomme. I actually think I'll be weaning earlier than 6 months, and definitely giving the iron fortified baby cereals. Guidelines are just that, guidelines. DD nearly gave S rice pudding the other day. She was eating it, I had s on ky knee by her and i really think he'd have had it if i hadn't noticed a bit late really, bad mummy chatting not concentrating . And really, do I think it would do any harm? Probably not!

Biscuitsandtea · 26/07/2012 06:26

Lots of v interesting weaning stuff there - thank you Smile

I suppose waiting until 6 months because 'it's easier' isn't necessarily an actual reason then and I should think about it a bit more Confused. With all this earlier weaning stuff are they looking at any cues that the babies are 'ready' to wean? Like the HV leaflet says they should be able to sit / hold something / put hand to mouth? Or is that exactly the point of it that maybe we shouldn't be waiting for these 'signs'?

Funny though because you'd think by human nature / design weaning would be a lot later wouldn't you and cave-mummies would have bf for a lot longer (as long as they weren't eaten by a dinosaur)?

Scarlet I suspect my child is the anomaly here on the scared factor, rather than yours. We went to watch a play at a children's theatre for a friend's birthday. It was possibly aimed at slightly older children as a lot of the children there were maybe 5-7? But anyway, the actors had papier mâché type animal heads on (he's scared of any of those big 'dressed up character type things'). My son was the only one to hide his face throughout the whole thing. One other little girl cried at first but then enjoyed it. The rest of them were totally fine.

Biscuitsandtea · 26/07/2012 06:34

Oh, and having managed to leave my 3-4 month review without the weaning leaflet the HV was waving at me I looked up the leaflet online so if anyone is interested this is the current weaning advice leaflet (or at least what my HV was going to give me)

Scarlet was it you who asked which centile ds2 was on? He's between 50 and 75, born on 75th (even though almost 3 weeks early). He's currently slipping down to the 50th but I think because he's so high (ie still above 50th) they're not overly worried yet.

Now here's a question. They say you should consider weaning of they're slipping down the centiles or losing weight with no other explanation but then people alway argue that milk is the most calorific thing that they can get extra calories from and they don't actually get many calories from food especially at first (because the amounts are so small and they spit loads out?) So how does that work? Is the idea that if they're eating/drinking as much milk as they can process but it's still not enough then they need extra calories from food but without dropping any milk?

It's all so complicated when you think about it Confused

JenFraggle · 26/07/2012 09:24

I'm going to ignore all this weaning talk, far too early for me to think about and I'll only end up confusing myself :o

Well somehow I've managed to be up, dressed, made bread which is now proving, got a load of nappies in washing and have done the dishes. Can someone explain to me how this has happened so early in the morning?

DD coughed up a load of phlegm this morning, hopefully she can do this again and start to clear her throat a bit.

How are the boobs this morning Musical?

pommedechocolat · 26/07/2012 09:34

biscuits - I guess if you can;'t get them to drink more milk as long as they don't then start drinking less the food is an add on. The calorie thing is also something that bugs me - bananas, sweet potatoes, avocados etc are very full of calories and are normally given mixed up with fm or bm.

Good work jen!

muscial and Dream - have you raised the cots of your refluxers? I tried with A but it seemed to make sleep worse (but then it was the first week of the omeprazole so could have been that??). Now I'm wondering if I should try it again. She was up every 2 hours last night and I am shattered.

She is 5 months tomorrow so five months ago I had my last stretch of sleep that lasted longer than 5 hours (and I've only had 5 hours twice since she was born to clarify...). Tired.com.

Wants3 · 26/07/2012 09:40

All this weaning malarky does sound so complicated doesn't it! I remember when I weaned ds1&2 it must have been at 4 months because I was feeding them rice and purees in the bouncy chair! That was the norm I think because there were no weight/ feeding issues. They took to it really well. I suppose you have to throw in the BLW which says food is fun until they are 1 so it can't all be about calorie intake etc.
Another sunny day here and another day of banging and crashing from the builders! I might just pack up a bag and head into town. I'll just wait for the morning nappy explosion as I don't want to deal with that when out!:)

pommedechocolat · 26/07/2012 09:45

Thing is though that 'food is fun until they're one' sounds awfully, well, shit to someone who has been up all night, every night for the past five months breastfeeding...

I still blame the breastfeeding :)

And I know that I'm supposed to be the one that adapts not dd2 but the end of the tether is getting nearer and 'those' people obviously never met dd1 (nursery day today, yay!).

Wants3 · 26/07/2012 11:14

:)@ pomme
I put D in his pram AWAKE and he quietly drifted off to sleep while the builder drilled through the brickwork in the next room so nerr to the hv and her CC!
I decided not to go out today as apparently it is going to be noisier tomorrow so I will save my trip for then. I have about £100 in Mothercare/ ELC gift cards to spend as I was given 4 when D was born. Is there anything I might really need or should I save it for toys when he is a bit bigger?

JenFraggle · 26/07/2012 11:40

How long are they valid for Wants? I was given a £10 voucher and bought clothes with it. They have a sale on at the moment so I made the most of that. Not sure what I would have done with a large amount though. Most people gave us clothes or money, all the money has gone in her ISA
