New thread time!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
pommedechocolat · 18/08/2012 09:13

I did get my 15% thing wants! Hoping for one from jmb too now...

You are so brave that you went at all dream!

I feel like weaning has been a godsend with both my dds (dd1 overly carefully from 18 weeks and dd2 a bit more gung ho from 22 weeks). They were both induced at 38 weeks as well so not properly cooked.

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 18/08/2012 09:31

Good luck Too! I hope M has a wonderful naming day! I might ask you for a few details of what you've organised for the day - when you're less busy of course! Don't forget to enjoy yourself today!

(((Hugs))) to Dream. Whatever happened it's all over now. Feel free to rant when you have more signal though!

Pomme nothing major happened last night, just the usual arguments over stupid things. If I tried to tell you what we argued about you'd die of boredom because it's just so petty. It was just an unpleasant atmosphere, and I'm really tired of being annoyed at my husband. Sigh.

All of this weaning talk plus A's new highchair are making me sooooooo keen to start weaning! It's a good thing we've got this holiday coming up or I'm worried I'd be starting her off dead on 17 weeks! When we get back she'll be 23 weeks, which is a great time to start. May I ask if the current weaners have any tips? Good techniques? Good foods? Good equipment (bibs, spoons, bowls, etc)?

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 09:36

Wow Dream you are tres brave to have gone at all. I hope people helped you a bit and didn't watch you trying to juggle 3 children with just the one pair of hands Sad

How cool though with the porridge - glad the weaning is going well with them Smile. What do you mix the porridge with? Can't remember what we did with DS1?

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 09:39

Oooh yes Scream good point - I'd love any weaning tips too even though I've done it before. I really have no idea what to start with / what to progress on to / how the heck I get from no food to eating the same as ds1 Confused

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 10:22

Gosh is it really only 20 past 10? Surely it must be bedtime by now?

DH working both days this weekend and I'm completely out of ideas as to what to do with the dc......

Wants3 · 18/08/2012 12:49

cloth nappy alert Tesco have totsbots easy fit at half price!

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 12:53

In store or online Wants? I've just been on their website and put in tots bots easy fit but they came up at £14.99 each and it didn't look like an offer?

Hypothetically speaking, if I were to want to go down the reusable path, what kit would I need to get started? And what brand etc would be best? I've toyed with the idea but don't really know where to start......

JenFraggle · 18/08/2012 15:48

Biscuits do what I did and go on Ebay, pick up a selection of different ones and see what you like. Any you don't like can always be resold so you aren't wasting money IYSWIM.

scarletfingernail · 18/08/2012 16:00

Jen I've been wondering if you've ever seen or met in RL my new crush, Ben Ainslie?

I hope you're not going to burst my fantasy and say he's an arse. My Mum suspects he may be one Hmm

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 16:01

But I wouldn't even know where to start Jen Confused

I have no idea what the brands are or what's different between them, or what you need to make them work or anything.

What I know about reusable nappies is:

  • they exist
  • you need a bucket to stick them in before washing.

That's it. I don't even know if it's something I want to do (it isn't as if I don't have enough washing.....)

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 16:03

Oooh Scarlet I can see where you're coming from on the eye candy dept but I thought he might be a bit of a knob when he was interviewed on the telebox

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 16:04

I meant on the eye candy front or ib the eye candy dept. Take your pick Smile

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 16:05

Flipping heck.

IN the eye candy dept

I give up

JenFraggle · 18/08/2012 16:36

Biscuits I have some 2 part ones where you have a terry towling shaped nappy with poppers to adjust the size and then a waterproof cover that goes over the top and also does up with poppers. You don't need to change the cover each time you change a nappy so you need less of these than the nappies.

I also have some all in one (AIO) where it is just like a disposable nappy. They come with either poppers or aplix (velcro) fastenings.

There are also pocket or stuffable nappies. They have the outer like the all in one but have an opening at one end where you can put an insert. You can put in multiple ones if you need extra absorbency. I find that they dry quickest, the inserts take longer but if you have more than 1 insert per nappy then you will generally have 1 ready. I have a nappy that is all fleecy so is virtually dry when it comes out the machine.

You can get ones that are birth to potty, these have poppers on the front to make them smaller so that you don't need to keep buying bigger ones as DS grows or you can buy sized ones which will generally fit better but you end up buying more.

Have mesh bags to put in the bucket so when you come to wash you just take the bag out the bucket and empty it all into the washer without having to handle the dirty nappies. I have disposable liners to catch the worst of the poo but you can use cut up fleece if you like. When you get solid poo you just shake it off down the loo before putting the nappy in the bucket.

Anything I haven't covered there?

JenFraggle · 18/08/2012 16:38

No I don't know Ben Ainslie, I may be from Falmouth but am not a fan of the water. I only joined Sea Cadets for the boys

Wants3 · 18/08/2012 18:57

The nappies were in store,£7.49. I have a selection of Different types of nappies ATM. Jen pretty much covered it. If you go to the website Fill your Pants you can talk to a nappy guru in your area (I am considering becoming one in my area:))

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 19:57

So say you went with those. They are all in ones no? How many would you need? Then you need disposable poo-catching liners? How much are they? Any other significant cash outlays?

JenFraggle · 18/08/2012 20:59

Yes it is an all in one. I do have an easy fit. Liners aren't expensive.

Make sure you get a decent bucket, you need the lid to lock to keep small hands from fiddling and also to stop any smell coming out. I got the Totsbots one and also their mesh bags :)

Biscuitsandtea · 18/08/2012 21:23

Ok, ok.....

And how many nappies would one need - say 5 ish a day, a day to use, a day to wash, a day to dry = 15 ish? Cos you can use disposables if you run out / are out etc?

PetWoman · 18/08/2012 21:29

Too hope you had a fab day and your toast went well. Congratulations to M for her Official Naming!

Dream well done for even going to the wedding at all. I hope your mum fulfilled her grandmotherly duties at least!

I tried DS on some mashed banana today. Not a great success - he pulled some funny faces and didn't seem very interested. Might try baby porridge tomorrow. Is it easiest to hand express the milk required to mix it, or pump a bit? Would also welcome advice on useful equipment etc!

Scream sorry your evening wasn't more enjoyable. :(

PetWoman · 18/08/2012 21:32

Ooh, sorry to interrupt the nappy seminar! Grin

JenFraggle · 18/08/2012 21:34

The number you need depends on your DS and how many he is likely to go through. We are still using a mixture of cloth and disposables as DD does so many wees that we would end up having to change her in the night so use disposables then. She is now getting the hang of sleeping through so we don't want to disturb that!

Just get a few off ebay or preloved to have a play with and then go from there. You don't have to go straight to using them all the time remember

Wants3 · 18/08/2012 22:47

Jen we have just started to use tots bots bamboozles with Blueberry wraps through the night as D sleeps 8 hours! They are great, no leaks at all. I also use fleece liners in all my nappies, they dry really quick and there are some cute designs, pirates, cowboys, monsters etc.

Biscuitsandtea · 19/08/2012 07:27

Oh I just thought Pet v exciting about starting weaning there Smile. You asked about milk etc - I'm buying some aptamil for the purposes of making up baby rice / porridge etc. I think I did express some for ds1 and froze it but I hate expressing and really have neither the time nor the inclination to bother with it this time (I am sooooo idle) so I'm just going to use a bit of ready made aptamil where required.

However, when I did express I had an electric Avent pump (which was a bit meh I think). I've heard good things about medulla pumps but never tried them. Buying you're any good at hand expressing that's supposed to be the most efficient expressing method (I think?). Would probs be a bit knackering if you were trying to express a whole feed but if you just need a wee bit you could try it that way and see how you get on.

If you're wanting to freeze what you express I used Lansinoh breast milk storage bags (take up less space than the cups). They were quite good I think (although reading reviews on amazon some people say they leak sometimes when defrosting and seemed to like Medela ones?)

Biscuitsandtea · 19/08/2012 07:30

Oh, just looked up the Medela bags on Amazon and about the same no of people (ie a few) say they leak too Confused
