Thread 2.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
jaggythistle · 17/05/2012 14:52

i did see one of each of those biscuits, think they are a similar shape but mei tai just cloth and ergo is a 'soft structured' type.

the link i have is a lady who makes stretchy wrap type ones for £15. you can pay a bit more for a decorative panel.

liked the look of a ring sling too...haven't looked into that yet.

biscuits apparently you have to tie it tighter than you think to support them - does that sound right dream?

jaggythistle · 17/05/2012 15:07

sling lady site

Biscuitsandtea · 17/05/2012 15:08

Yes - that sounds right re the tying Jaggy - I just can't get it tight enough - I'd need more hands!

Will report back on the sling meet next week too Smile. I also fancied looking at a ring sling - might work for bf out and about I think?

DreamingOfPeace · 17/05/2012 15:10

Yes, I was told tie it as tight as you can, don't leave room for the baby, it stretches for them. I can get one in but keep having insufficient head support, and get one in for the twin carry but not the other. Helpful. I hate fiddling about and same problem biscuits- I'm either in a rush or they're crying so I don't try it enough

DreamingOfPeace · 17/05/2012 15:10

I like the soft structured. DD was SO comfy in the ergo, slept for hours in it.

DreamingOfPeace · 17/05/2012 15:11

I regret buying the boba 3G instead of an ergo with infant insert...

jaggythistle · 17/05/2012 15:13

www.patapum.com/ these apparently pretty good soft structured and less expensive than ergo...

Biscuitsandtea · 17/05/2012 16:02

Does any one know on the topic of baby bjorn carriers, I've heard various rumblings that (a) you shouldn't have a baby facing outwards on the front and (b) it doesn't support their hips enough (ie the 'seat' between their legs isn't wide enough to put them in a sitting position).

Are these true? Obv with the facing forward thing that would never be until they had head support so irrelevant for ds2 at the mo. but are people saying you should never have them forward facing? Why not?

And with the hip thing, again is that at thing for while they're tiny or when they're bigger too? You know how the time limit for car seats is more important when they're tiny but less so when they're say 1 year? That sort of thing.

Discuss. Grin

jaggythistle · 17/05/2012 16:05

www.slingguide.co.uk/

this seems to answer all those!!

link i wasgiven about sling types :)

jaggythistle · 17/05/2012 16:07

www.slingguide.co.uk/safety-advice-links/mass-produced-carriers/ about babybjorn types i guess..

www.slingguide.co.uk/safety-advice-links/about-baby-facing-out/ about baby facing out

pommedechocolat · 17/05/2012 16:12

I'm not a really a sling fan - have a bb for when absolutely necessary. I have a friend who manages to bf in a bb! Insane.

Anyone got any good tips for a good paper wedding anniversary gift for dh. He's not at all info anything keep sakey and only reads car magazines. Is a mag subscription boring and unromantic??

Biscuitsandtea · 17/05/2012 16:23

Pomme - paper wedding anniversary we were going to buy a magazine rack cos its sort of paper related. We still haven't bought it (and we've been married nearly 7 years) but you could think outside the paper box and get something paper related?

So having had no gift for our first WA, DH also spent the night camping in Herefordshire on a work teambuilding thing Hmm

He's lucky I'm still here WinkGrin

Biscuitsandtea · 17/05/2012 16:28

Ah very useful Jaggy :) Thank you!

I think I'd quite like one of these soft structured type things or a Mei Tei the more I read about them. I can see how DS1 got too heavy for the BB quite quickly. What I do like about the BB though is the fact that it is easy to put on and to put DS2 in - and then easy to tighten and I know I've done it 'right'.

I think I got DS2 in the moby right the first time I used it (beginners luck) and he seemed v v cosy and dropped off to sleep (and looked adorable dozing away) but since then I don't seem to get him down far enough into it. I guess he's quite tall to still be young enough to have his legs tucked in iyswim) but I just feel there is so much room for error with the moby wrap. I lack confidence with it.

jaggythistle · 17/05/2012 16:34

can you do the 'froggy legs'with his feet out?

Biscuitsandtea · 17/05/2012 16:40

well for the normal front hold with legs out it says they should have their legs 'fully straightened' and apparently this happens at 2-3 months? So not sure - maybe I could now? He's not much over 2 months though.

Other than that I've tried a kangaroo hold which is suitable from 8lbs but its bloody hard to tie because you have to put ds2 in while you're tying it rather than tying it on and then popping him in - I just can't get it tight enough although he does seem to be broadly in the right position.

jaggythistle · 17/05/2012 16:43

highly complicated. I just ordered a stretchy wrap from the site above. Well actually 2. it was only about £7 more for an extra one and we're planning on going on holiday soon - thought an extra one might be handy in case it gets puked/pooed on!

had to carry DS2 about a bit more today and was wishing for a sling. it's hard to spread toast for DS1 with one hand....

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 17/05/2012 19:07

Aaargh, my laptop is driving me mad! It keeps opening Help screens and typing random letters. If I do some v random posts it will be the laptop and not me!

Am interested in the cheap slings, thank you Jaggy! After all this sling chat I have dug the Premaxx sling out and am currently baby-wearing. I think I've adjusted it properly this time and M seems pretty comfy. She's half asleep and I'm hoping she goes all the way soon. Is the sling lady sling basically a long sheet of material? The Premaxx one is killing my shoulder already. It is helping me with chores like loading the dishwasher, though.

Pomme, for our paper wedding anniversary we did books and notebooks. Any use to you? Wallpaper, newspaper subscription, Private Eye, maybe? Pictures, photos, posters? Graphic novels, comic books eg Calvin and Hobbes?

M's kidney appt went well - she will be monitored annually until she's 5 or so, if the kidney shrivels up and vanishes then great; if it doesn't then they'll want to take it out. Next appt made for next May. She doesn't need to take ABs anymore, hurray! She's to be a bit careful as she gets older - no smoking, no getting overweight (high blood pressure = strain on kidneys), be wary of contact sports to protect the good kidney. This is very much worst case scenario, but it is possible that her working kidney could be ruptured by a kick to the stomach, so taking up karate or rugby is probably not a good idea. Obviously it's not possible to protect her from everything, so the doc said to take that advice with a pinch of salt. She also said not to use baby wipes as they can increase the risk of UTIs by killing good bacteria! Am a bit Confused and Hmm about that one. Still, I suppose it's back to cotton wool and water for us. I'm not wiping inside her vagina with the wipe, though, so I don't see what difference it makes.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 17/05/2012 19:20

Aaargh, Premaxx baby slings are unsafe! Or may be unsafe as they push the baby's chin down onto the chest and can cause asphyxiation. Read that and realised Bean was snoring heavily. Am about to take her out of it once I have heated up the pram for her.

OP posts:
pommedechocolat · 17/05/2012 19:20

Too - thanks for those thought - will have a pick over them later when less frazzled (girls just gone to bed, dh despatched to Tesco for onion so I can finally get round to tea!). That sounds really good on M's kidney especially as not smoking and not getting overweight will make her teen years good for you :) What about water wipes?? I'm using them on dd1 and 2 at the moment. DD1 used to say 'ouch' to pampers sensitive but doesn't to water wipes. Maybe even if you just did them for out and about and did cotton wool at home?

dd2 much less annoying today - I had a go at a bit of your lc's advice dream and stopped switching boobs at every hourly feed and in the morning even made her go two hours a couple of times so maybe that helped? Her cold's bothering her less too which may also be helping!

dream - dd1 could power the national grid. She exhausts people who aren't pg/with a newborn! She's very lovely and bright/curious/enthusiastic with it though. I am now slightly petrified by your dd in the bath story!

jaggythistle · 17/05/2012 19:26

it is indeed a big length of cloth. it goes over both shoulders though, so hopefully comfy with a tiny one in. I've watched a few videos on how to wrap, also seen it in person now.

glad the kidney appointment went well.

going a bit nuts with poor wee DS2 just now. he's pooing so much his bum is getting worse again. :( also he either poos just as he falls asleep so i have to wake him up and upset him, or just as he wakes up so he's ravenous and screaming while i change him. today has been particularly poopy and one after another and it's disappointing to see the wee bum getting red again on matter what we do. not a big deal in the grand scheme, just bit wearing when you're sleepy.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 17/05/2012 20:38

Attempts to create my own wrap sling out of a giant scarf have failed on two counts - the scarf wasn't long enough and M got very wide-awake during my attempts. Oops.

OP posts:
Biscuitsandtea · 17/05/2012 20:43

Too - my moby wrap is (I think) 5m long! Shock that would need to be one heck of a scarf!

Hope she settles again soon Smile x

Oh and glad the kidney appt went well - well don M x

DreamingOfPeace · 18/05/2012 05:52

Yes, moby is 5m long.

Where is everyone tonight?! I have two bad babies asleep on my chest who have both just been puking on me.

Was just checking for musical joining us

DreamingOfPeace · 18/05/2012 05:53

Oh, and I echo biscuits well done Maia, good news on the kidney front :)

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 18/05/2012 06:00

I'm here Dream, also wearing a chest frog! How has your night been? Any sleep at all?

I'm doing a no-DH all nighter because he has work today, and DD has been surprisingly kind to me. We have a deal going where so long as I don't put her in her cot, she will stay asleep between feeds! So she's spent most of the night sleeping next to me (only 5 inches away from the cot she refuses to use Hmm)

Also waiting to officially welcome Musical!
