Ok. I'm sure some of you on here had this with your lo's? The discharge midwife thinks he has tongue tie. Reassurance pls cos I'm starting to spiral. They are coming to look at him shortly.

Frakiosaurus · 19/09/2012 12:01

If he has tongue tie they have caught it. It should be a very quick snip (French MWs do it when they see it with sterilised scissors - takes 10s) if it's straightforward, if not you're in the best place to get further help.

Tongue tie is amazingly common (and amazingly under-detected).

Remember also that 'spiralling' is normal. You're coming off the post-birth high and these other problems aren't helping. Do you have good support in place for when you get home? Emotionally as well as physically?

ecuse · 19/09/2012 15:41

Jo had tongue tie but not diagnosed and snipped until nearly 10 weeks. It was no problem at all - done in seconds, only a little spot of blood. I wish someone had spotted it before discharge, would have saved a lot of physical and emotional pain and I might have been able to EBF.

Kittycatcat · 19/09/2012 15:43

Thanks ladies, as always. Feeling calmer now. And we are home yay.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 19/09/2012 17:03

Glad to hear you are home Kitty, that in itself will make you feel better.

Remember all of these things really aren't big problems (although i am sure that they feel like they are) and that they can b e rectified. I should imagine that it feels like one thing after another {{hugs}}

Would it cheer you up if I tell you about two new lush pairs of shoes that I have just bought? Was that a yes? Grin

Well, as you asked so nicely. The first pair are nude ballerina pumps - v soft and tres comfortable. The second pair are black patent loafers with pink leopard print on the top - yes really. They are really rather fab Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 19/09/2012 17:10

ILike where are the pumps from please?

kitty I'm glad you're home :) Remember you will be feeling all hormonal and wonky for the next few days minimum, so be gentle with yourself and just snuggle your children :) ((hugs))

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 19/09/2012 17:39

The pumps are from Next, they have loads of nice ones at the mo. A friend had some gorgeous ones from Boden, they were super soft but narrow so a no go for me.

The Next ones are very low cut though, so you do get toe cleavage Grin

GlaikitFizzog · 19/09/2012 19:15

Tongue tie here Kitty, couldn't get consensus from everyone that it was the problem with our feeding (I know it was now), how is feeding going? Bs was snipped at 5 weeks, but by then we were in the pump and feed routine so never really got proper feeding established.

Plenty of TTd babies feed with no problems, but it's a good thing someone has picked up on it.

you are a bad influence iLike!

GlaikitFizzog · 19/09/2012 19:17

Oh forgot to say, my friend who is due next week has just asked me to be her birth partner if she goes into labour when her DP is on a course 6 hours away!! I might actually get to see a delivery suite at my local hospital!!

Kittycatcat · 19/09/2012 21:45

He seems to be feeding ok. It looks mechanical but I can feel the latch. He takes ages and then goes between 3-6 hours!! If I offer he will refuse if he's not ready.

Kittycatcat · 20/09/2012 05:27

That statement doesn't apply at night apparently! Hey ho.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 20/09/2012 06:54

Aww kitty I hope you've got some rest. Your milk will be in soon and then you will feel better.

Kittycatcat · 20/09/2012 06:56

I think it came in yest ali. Boobs are much fuller. I remember the first two weeks with s being the worst Confused

mumtomoley · 20/09/2012 09:10

Pleased to hear you are at home kitty. The first two weeks are definitely the worst... lack of sleep, night sweats, sore nipples and the overwhelmingness of having a whole new little person in the house.

It will get better very quickly though especially ones those pesky hormones have settled down. How long has our DP got off work? DON'T FORGET TO SLEEP IN THE DAY!! xx

Kittycatcat · 20/09/2012 09:53

He goes back week after next. So we have today, tomorrow and next week. Milk is deffo in as just had A's wettest nappy so far which proves to me he is getting milk (and slicing my nipsAngry)

ecuse · 20/09/2012 12:07

Poor you, Kitty. What was the verdict on TT? Sounds plausible if he's slicing your nips. Such awful pain; I remember it only too well. Sympathies Sad

GlaikitFizzog · 20/09/2012 13:30

Ooh I remember sliced nips. BiscuitBiscuit well mine were more chewed. Do you have lanisoh? Slather it on before during and after feeding. Remember this roo shall pass!

JKSLtd · 20/09/2012 13:46

DS1 had TT, they don't snip here (a rant for another time) and eventually it 'stretched' and we carried on BF until 13months but it was agony to start with.
The main thing (i was told) is that the tongue needs to be able to cross the lower gum (teeth) line.
Lots of lansinoh, change breastpads often, airtime if you can. And remember to go back to basics with positioning, it's too easy with subsequent DC to get lazy whilst trying to do other things. Think back to 'tummy to Mummy, nipple to nose' stuff :)

ecuse · 20/09/2012 15:46

Mine were more like sandpapering!

They don't snip at the hospital I gave birth in either JKS - in fact, midwives apparently managed to secure funding, train one or two of themselves up and then have their TT specialist clinic blocked by the paediatric consultants in the hospital who consider it 'unnecessary surgery'. I think that's why it took us so long to get diagnosed/seen (had to go to neighbouring PCT in the end)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 20/09/2012 16:30

Oh God yes, the BiscuitBiscuit!

Is your tummy very sore kitty or could you lie him on you as you lean back? It allows for a really deep latch.
I couldn't manage it with either of mine for a couple of weeks though because my scar/tummy was sore.

Are they going to do anything about the TT?

Kittycatcat · 20/09/2012 18:18

We have a referral. He's feeding well and it only hurts when he latches. Back to basics indeed. Positioning is crucial. Am slathered in lansinoh Smile

JKSLtd · 20/09/2012 20:16

Keep a close eye out for thrush too. Combine a c-s, probable ABs (?) and a poor latch and thrush will dive in there. Don't wait for white spots, if you're getting pain between feeds look up the Breastfeeding Network site for the drugs and advice you need (on phone so can't link) print it out and pester a doc until you get the fluconazole. Hopefully by me mentioning it, it won't happen Smile

Kittycatcat · 21/09/2012 23:17

Just scared myself. Was getting ready for bed. Bent to stand a slipper up and started shaking and couldn't stop. I'm now a little sore.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 22/09/2012 08:10

You ok Kitty? Sounds like your body was telling you you done a bit too much. I remember using my feet and toes a lot to move things around after my section - it saved me from bending.

I'm off to get my hair coloured and cut this morning, then to help at the NCT Nearly New Sale. Have a good day with the boys dh!

Kittycatcat · 22/09/2012 08:48

I think you are right ilike message received! You feel ok so you forget you had surgery. I'll be slowing down now.

Have fun at the nct sale. I love a bargain.

Whoop. Not only did we just have a lay in... 820 instead of 7... Tho I don't know how long S was awake cos he was playing happily in his cot with his bears... But A slept his first night in his crib and only woke every three hours for feeds. AMAZING!!
