((((hug)))) honey, it's so frustrating when OHs genuinely don't appreciate you're so tired/stressed. Is there any way you can get a break at all, friend who could give you a break? If not, could you find a tenner a week for him to have a few hours with a childminder? Or is there a gym with a creche so it's more justifiable to your OH (men can be funny about buying childcare while on mat leave)... Do post here, we can't wave magic wands on the sleep front but if we can reduce your stress even the tiniest bit it's worth it.

Woo-hoo for the apple puree brigade air!

and yes, Northern, in my defence I was eying up the Albert Flip for 4 weeks before I cracked...

Today's job is to persuade DH to entertain the troops for as much as possible while i try to sort out some of the attic crap stuff. We have waaaaay too much stuff!! And am hoping some juicy evay-able stuff woll be making itself obvious along the way...

CherryBlossom27 · 28/04/2012 14:56

Air snap, we've tried DS on puréed apple at lunchtime, he wasn't completely convinced, think he preferred his carrot yesterday, but did keep opening his mouth and tasting and swallowing so I'll try apple again tomorrow.

NorthernChinchilla · 28/04/2012 15:19

Got two shirts and a jacket in the charity shops, then went to Pizza Express. Nightmare trying to bf him in there as he was just too interested in what was going on...but did mean that I could eat my pizza with him sitting on my lap as he was entertained by the comings and goings and hustle and bustle.

Making cookies this afternoon as a treat Smile

GeeandTee · 28/04/2012 15:29

air what did the article say about baby rice? I've heard negative things too.

aethelfleda · 28/04/2012 15:58

What is wrong with baby rice? I just thought it was smegging useless as it goes all sloppy after 30 seconds and my two wouldn't touch it even mixed with breast milk!

Figgygal · 28/04/2012 16:21

There seems to be an anti baby rice brigade on mumsnet I did read the report too but glazed over, am sure you could say similar things about any food if you looked into it enough. Makes me wonder if baby led weaning is the new parenting snobbery and baby rice is its easy target.
I did buy some it was useless it clumped up no matter what I do so have thrown it out and using porridge instead.

Lo has been asleep on me for almost 2 hours now he even drained a bottle without opening his eyes when he started crying in his sleep.

Yummy curry for tea tonight

aethelfleda · 28/04/2012 17:01

It's certainly very trendy to say "oh yes, we do BLW"...
Not sure it matters either way as long as baby is given safe, hygenic food in appropriate amounts. There's a thought: how about baby-led-weaning on mars bars? Ten months sound about right?

OiMissus · 28/04/2012 17:23

Baby rice does tend to go soggy very quickly. I'm not so impressed. And Ali didn't fancy it yesterday either. But he did have a carton of Aptimil out if a bottle from DH, so we're doing ok. Half an hour after having 130ml he then wanted to feed from me though.Hmm
DH has gone out to hint down some Strepsils and lockets. Woe is me.
Two of my colleagues have just had boys, I bought new stuff in the MnP sale, and thought I'd pass on some hardly worn stuff. ...I can't do it. They're Alistair's first things.Smile How pathetic is that?!

HoneyLovesCake · 28/04/2012 17:34

Thought you were possibly ttc again Oi? You'd be crazy to give away any of his things, you might need them again. See, not pathetic at all Grin

9 reasons not to use baby rice I have no opinion on the topic; DS very nearly BLW'd himself on Dairy Milk Buttons this week Blush Of course I'd have lied in the baby book & said they were Montezuma's Wink

BJR · 28/04/2012 18:04

Sounds like lots of people are having success with purees! DS is trying to steal food now if its anywhere near him, and managed to get a good lick of an apple I was eating whilst I was distracted talking yesterday. He was very pleased with himself.

Having a nice relaxing week with my parents and DS is getting very spoiled by Nanny and Grandad. I'm even getting an evening out at the theatre tonight while DS has a boys night with Grandad!

AnAirOfHope · 28/04/2012 18:06

Honey thats the articule i was going to link to. It does not say if the rice was orgainic or where it was growen or what brand it was so how do we know what rice is ok and what is not? its just confused me tbh. I think i give air hipps banana porage to wean at 6 months.

im not sure that the expessing will help with weight gain but im giving it ago any way and see what happens along with some apple at lunchtime.

aethelfleda · 28/04/2012 18:22

oi, make yourself a keepsake box: I used one of those chuffing useless "bath boxes" that mothercare flog people for their first baby: a lidded box with a little rising box inside. Put in a few favourite outfits, first shoes, favourite little rattle, tiny hat, and keep them. When baby is five get them all out. Even if you have more children, keep the keepsake box seperate for each, you'll have tons of other clothes to reuse...

MimsyBorogroves · 28/04/2012 18:37

Despite wanting to get to 6 months (more for my own convenience) I've had to accept that DS2 wants food. He's been grabbing and licking mine - I thought i would give it a go.

He bloody loves puréed pear. I'm guessing we're weaning then. Think I'm just going to do a meal at 6pm (in the hope of getting him to go longer overnight)

aethelfleda · 28/04/2012 18:39

Just clicked on the link: scientifically IMO that's a rubbish article!!

"rice is high in sugars"...Yep, and I suppose mashed banana, apple puree and fruity porridge isn't??

"rice has trace arsenic in it", yep, it's a trace element in loads of things. You don't mention whether the levels are harmful, but use the scary name to be frightening. Biiig deal.

"rice causes diabetes": there does seem to be a link between large amounts of high-GI white rice consumption and type 2 diabetes in asian populations(recently discussed in the bMj, so proper medical research), but that doesnt mean that using small amounts of baby rice in infancy causes diabetes, it just means you've created a strapline from the research that sounds dramatic.

But hey, free access on the interweb and anything can get published. I thinking of starting a blog based on homeopathic treatments for greater effect on our DHs than the undilited kind...

(going slightly nuts here as DS has beem crazy teething all day, poor boy...)

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 28/04/2012 18:44

Sorry not had chance to catch up yet but just to add: Sky slept all night woohoo Grin

Been doing some wedding shopping and also treated myself to some new togs.

Sky has moved off baby rice onto fruity porridge which she loves and just tried some pureed Broccoli, Cauliflower & cheese and enjoyed it all going nom nom nom Smile just enjoying the rest of her bottle.

Darcie is practicing her singing for her singing lessons and doing well - however is it bedtime yet!

NorthernChinchilla · 28/04/2012 20:00

@ HLC and the Montezuma's, that made me Smile.

It was a good lesson in Pizza Express today that even if you put all the nice, interesting, shiny shiny things like cutlery, bottles and pizza cutters out of DS's way, and especially the drinks, they may not be out of the way of Mr Elephant Rattle...
Missed by millimetres!

Tbh, I didn't even know baby rice existed. The dual forces of commercialisation and neuroticism that seem to drive everything around parenting don't bloody help ('you must buy this or your baby's legs will drop off' vs 'if you give your baby this you're a bad parent') and as long as you're not actually weaning your child on full fat Coke and Mars bars at 8 weeks, and can offer a nice range of things, then I doubt it matters greatly in the long term.

We're all doing a brilliant job in the face of some serious adversity, so let's enjoy those multi-coloured poos and ruined carpets!

Cookie dough is made and is resting in the fridge. I shall report on success or otherwise tomorrow.

Hope you feel better soon Oi. And it's not pathetic at all! We were given one of those boxes, so have put the very first things he wore (complete with washed out blood stain from cord!), the cards we received, a picture of him on his first day, etc, to treasure. I open it occasionally and get snuffly Blush. I'm keeping stuff for if/when we ttc no.2, but I'm not sure I could give it away either, and I'm the Queen of recycling clothes and charity shops!

So glad you're having a nice time BJR, you really deserve it after the rather pants time you've been having. How's it going generally?

Tonight I present you with the image of modern motherhood (cough!) - breast pump in one hand, gin martini in the other (I did it the right way round though iykwim) and MN on my laptop, with the little boy all tucked up Smile.

HoneyLovesCake · 28/04/2012 20:08

air I thought that was probably the article you meant as you linked to her post on Calpol a while back. The way I read it all rice sounds bad, not just baby rice & not just one brand but as aethel said she hasn't backed her opinions up with much science...can't say this is going to stop me eating risotto :) If you like baby rice I'd go for it but it looks yucky to me More info on an NHS site here if you're worried enough to read it but since most of ends up on your baby rather than in your baby you may not want to bother reading it Wink

HoneyLovesCake · 28/04/2012 20:17

Crosspost NCI actually thought that baby rice was rice pudding nomnomnom before my SIL put me right. Very disappointed as I thought I'd enjoy finishing his leftovers Grin

hawthers · 28/04/2012 20:26

Happy to report that there has been kissing and making up in the hawthers household. DH looked after both boys expertly this morning, he got f down for a nap then made fairy cakes with DS1 while I had an extra 90 mins sleep. Also he is going to try and do the 3 am feed to allow me some more sleep tonight.

Not sure it will work but at least worth a try.

Figgygal · 28/04/2012 20:37

I have a keepsake box too but all clothes which he has grown out of have been donated to colleague at work who is due a boy in June apart from couple of cute gros which are in the box. I'm pretty sure we won't be trying for dc2 so no point keeping them also as she's had 3 black bags I had nowhere to keep it all anyway.

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 28/04/2012 20:44

I treated myself today with a new pair of chinos, sleeveless blouse, Cardigan & ballet pumps Grin

Also brought Neil's wedding present: a bargain if I do say so myself £250 knocked down to £115. A Seiko watch and I'm getting it engraved with Love Always Gem xxx 18.08.12

Aw, that's lovely DSM.

And great news hawthers, a golden Tribble to your DH. I hope you enjoy every moment of that extra 90 mins (although you'll be unconscious!)

OiMissus · 28/04/2012 21:57

Hurrah for Hawthers - long may it continue!
I do have a keepsake box or two, so I should pick out some special bits. And yes, hlc, we aren't ttc just yet, but I would like another. So I can't give it all away.
LO is in good spirits but poorly. He's really snotty, and he's done 3 snotty nappy fillers this evening. He doesn't usually poop in the evening.
Well done to those shopping for clothes, nc and dsm, I'm not even jealous at all. Envy
