Ooh I wonder if you will be on my flight to NY in Nov Rubes?

Kayz let her snooze by all accounts that was a super quick birth so she will be a little bit knackered after her fast exit. You need to sleep too.

Happy Bday Pru! Oh and beans why are you resigning? I thought you really liked work.

On the finding out gender thing. We didn't find out as for us it was the ultimate surprise apart from finding out we were accidentally up dufffed to begin with.Wink

Nolda · 20/06/2012 12:06

Congratulations, Kayz. Well done! I'd let her sleep too.

VagolaJahooli · 20/06/2012 13:58

Let her sleep Kayz, she doesn't really need anything milkwise for the first 24hrs so just let her chill.

McKayz · 20/06/2012 14:18

She's just been having a feed.

It hurts but the MW said it shouldn't. Is it likely to hurt just while we both get used to it.

After pains hurt like hell when she feeds too.

Indith · 20/06/2012 14:39

Afterpains will hurt when feeding because feeding causes the unterus to contract back down to normal size, keep on the paracetamol and ibuprofen :)

Feeding should NOT hurt during the whole feed. Pain for the first few sucks is normal in early weeks but it should not continue for the whole feed, that suggests there is something wrong with the latch.

McKayz · 20/06/2012 14:45

It is hurting for the whole feed. MW thought latch was fine But maybe it isn't quite right.

Indith · 20/06/2012 14:58

No, if it is hurting for the whole feed then there is a problem. Do NOT keep plodding through the feed just because you have got her latched on you will end up very sore and if you have a poor latch then it could affect ho wmuch milk she is actually getting.

When you latch her on take a deep breath, count to 10. If it still hurts then take her off (remember to slip your finger in her mouth, don't just pull her off!) and try again. Remember, hold her close, support her shoulders and neck but let her move her head around. "Angle of the dangle" so hold her where your nipple naturally falls, don't hold your breast up. Nose to nipple and let her tip her head back and open her mouth to take a big mouthful. You can do it, you've fed well before :). How does your nipple look after a feed? If you can't seem to get it right then do try to rule out other things like tongue tie, especially if your nipple looks misshapen after a feed or if it looks like she can't get her tongue out far enough.

urbanewarrior · 20/06/2012 15:02

With dc3 I really suffered with after pains when feeding . took paracetamol round the clock for a few days - definitely helped to do that rather than just take when I thought I needed it. Also- for me- and it may just be my slight struggle with bf-ding anyway it does hurt the whole feed for the first few days - ache rather than an "ow" kind of hurt but I know advice is as Indith says but sometimes latch is fine, all is fine, if just hurts. Only really reliable thing I found to check latch was ok was to look at the state of my nipple afterwards. So should have been sucked from equally and no red looking sore bits at the edges. That and baby clearly fed. There are pictures on kellymom (err don't google sucked nipple).

Really hope you've managed to speak to your dh. And how lovely about the boys

McKayz · 20/06/2012 15:03

It looks quite squashed. I tried biological nursing last night and the MWs were happy but the one today wasnt. I guess it's trial and error for a few days.

JollyBear · 20/06/2012 15:12

Was it hurting when the mw was looking or was it a different feed? J seemed to latch on wrong sometimes and at first I was reluctant to take her off and correct it. I ended up with a deep cut which was incredibly sore and did hurt when feeding.

So, if your nipple looks ok (no cuts) then it shouldn't hurt, as Indith said. I found it very uncomfortable at first though. Oh and the afterpains were a shocker.

JollyBear · 20/06/2012 15:15

You mean the midwife didn't approve kayz? Don't loose your confidence. You have obviously been reading up and know your stuff.

VagolaJahooli · 20/06/2012 15:36

Kayz I'm going to PM you on FB.
Indith that was such a good description you are going to be a brilliant MW.

McKayz · 20/06/2012 15:43

No she didn't seem to approve as I wasn't properly supporting Rosalie. I was leaning back with her lying on my chest.

I'm doing all that MWs said but I can't get her latched on without lots of pain. Trial and error and all that.

urbanewarrior · 20/06/2012 15:55

Angle of the dangle Grin I never knew that. Second what vag says that was really good explanation and don't mean to complicate by saying that it hurt all the time for me but was ok - just that I found it unhelpful to be told it shouldn't hurt at all. It definitely didn't after a while but was uncomfortable/painful before then. You're absolutely right about excruciating pain though - my test with ds was if it made my toes curl I'd got the latch wrong . Am stopping feeding dd2 at the moment - in fact may well have fed her for last time this morning and am sad about it as has been lovely.

Beans meant to say good news about your dad and I hope you're having a lovely birthday with dd2.

Maybe we should have a meet up on one I rubes' flights...Grin

VagolaJahooli · 20/06/2012 16:33

Urbs I was just thinking the same thing about flight meet up. I want to visit a friend in LA, does virgin fly there, anyone else going that way :-)

Haha Kayz funny I just wrote in the PM to you the exact thing your MW dissapproved of.

VagolaJahooli · 20/06/2012 16:39

Oops I meant :) not :-)

DeidreBarlow · 20/06/2012 17:54

Oh indith that was such a fab description! kayz I found it painful for the initial latch for a couple of weeks. But it was literally for the first 3/4 seconds then fine for the rest of the feed. Also are you big-boobed??? I was and I just couldn't latch either properly at first the 'usual' way. MW showed me the 'rugby ball' technique, which was really good in the early days - 'angle of the dangle' love it Grin. But I guess thats kind of what I did with my rugby ball style! Anyway, once boobed settled down, I could feed in the usual way.

Weight loss, I want to loose another stone ideally before my holidays in August. Then I would be somewhere near my 'wedding weight'. Funny really because my shape has totally changed!!

DH now in Ibiza till Sunday. Its really quite a long time for a lads jaunt. So I have my thinking cap on for my solo holiday. Thing is I don't think I could spend that many days away from the DC's. Sap that I am!

Indith · 20/06/2012 18:09

Pah! Daft MW not approving of biological nursing.

I second rugby ball for big boobs, ou get a better view of your latch Grin. Tis also good if your nipples point outwards rather than forwards. I think half the time the problem with feeding in cradle position is everyone seems to think the baby needs to be positioned high and at the front when really he could be high on a small boobed waman and low on a bigger woman, he could be right at the front but if your nipples point out sideways you want his head to be a little more towards your armpit because every woman is different and her breasts are each different so you will end up with slightly different positions on each side.

You'll crack it Kayz I'm sure you will, have confidence. If you are sure your latch is good and it still hurts then do please ask to have her checked for tongue tie, I don't like that you have a squashed nipple. The nipple can be bigger, it can be elongated after a feed but it shouldn't be squashed.

KiwiPanda · 20/06/2012 18:27

Kayz just wanted to add general support to the fab advice below. Both my girls hurt for various reasons and in my experience almost everyone does to some degree or other at least to start - sorry rambling a bit but basically just wanted to say that while ideally it wouldn't hurt, in does seem in reality to, but hopefully it's just a matter of getting latch sorted. My Rosalie did have tongue tie though so do have a look online about that if you think it's a possibility. Maybe it's a Rosalie thing Grin

VagolaJahooli · 20/06/2012 18:33

I have never heard the term 'biological feeding' does that just mean BF?

I also think the other advantage of rugby hold over cradle is that with cradle feed mums tend to move bub around too far to rest Bubs head into the crook of the elbow. Then their mouth is too far around the boob and they don't get the nice head tilt easy swallow action.

Indith I wish i was going to have another baby in five years time so you could be my midwife. Are you allowed to do a placement with an I dependant midwife while your a/student.

Indith · 20/06/2012 18:37

Sadly the course is NHS funded and all placements are in NHS. I think spending some time with an indie MW would be great though. I do know a local doula and Childbirth International teacher though so have a good source of alternative viewpoints Grin.

biological feeding/nurtering is just putting the baby on your chest skin to skin and letting them bob around and find the breast themselves. A newborn baby will have the instinct to crawl up the tummy and find the breast.

McKayz · 20/06/2012 18:41

She's on my chest now. She keeps latching on and then she seems to push herself off again.

I'll try the rugby hold. I am a 40DD at the minute! I'm really looking forward to seeing my usual MW tomorrow.

VagolaJahooli · 20/06/2012 20:15

Ay carumba Kayz!

I was trying to find the video I watched on baby crawl for Kayz but it isn't on you tube. I was a little gutted that I saw the video a month after DS2 was born, would have loved to have tried it out with him. Makes you wander if much of the feeding problems that are around these days would be easier if this was encouraged.

urbanewarrior · 20/06/2012 23:39

Interesting vag - I attribute dd2s excellent feeding (compared to other 2) to the fact that she wasn't taken off me and washed straight away but that we spent the first few hours with just her skin to skin and both of us covered in blanket. Was because of midwife shortage but ace for us that they just left us to it.

It will get easier Kayz I'm sure - I think one of my problems has been expecting a newborn to feed with ease of big baby given that's what I remember feeding last.
