Hey Pingu - great to see you! I'm really sorry to hear about poor DD1 - when will you know the prognosis for her hearing going forward?

DD2 still a bit under the weather, but we're both a damn sight better than we were yesterday. I'm due to be going to London tomorrow for a day of work with my boss, but I'm honestly not feeling up to it. So am going to call time on it for now and hopefully rearrange it in a month or so's time.

I am going to go now as am so cold my hands have gone blue and I can hardly type. It's mid-May, FFS and I've had to put the heating on. How to entertain the girls this afternoon... Hmmm. I would take them for a windy/wet walk, but with DD2 being below par, it's probably not a good idea. DH out tonight. Looking forward to a night in on my own. Wishing it was Weds, though, so I could goggle the Apprentice!!!

MomOrMum · 15/05/2012 16:14

Nice to see/read from all of you! I have been - very unusually - not even lurking the last few months nor visiting Mumsnet at all.

White light for your cousin Aubs. That is so scary and one of the things people don't think about when they present the c-section as the "easier" or "safer" route. Don't think any form of childbirth is easy or entirely safe in any way really!

Very impressed with all of this running talk. Nope, not me. Lost loads of weight on maternity leave but steadily packing it back on whilst I sit here at work eating a tub of M&S caramel crispy mini bites.

Sorry to hear about all the illnesses. We had an AWFUL April for illness, finished up with a round of conjuctivitis for me and both DSs. Grim! People at work thought I had developed a drug habit I think, with my bright red puffy eyes.

Kiwi, try to enjoy the maternity leave you have left though it is often hard I know! I do feel a bit like I didn't make the most of mine and just spent loads of it marching around with the buggy shouting at one DS or another.

Olympics meet up sounds great! We have beach volleyball tickets on the 29th, but otherwise are around. Anyone know the procedures for getting access to the Olympic Park with the kiddies? Do you need special tickets?

We should try to arrange a London meet up before July/August though too?

Where is Rubes? I just see on Facebook that she seems to be consuming cocktails in many fab 5-star hotels but I'm sure there is more to it than that!

Hi Pingu!

Beans, sounds like an awful illness. Hope things perking up a bit.

Better get back to it!

MomOrMum · 15/05/2012 16:16

Oh forgot one thing.....

Quick request for people to sign this petition over on another thread.....it just takes 30 seconds to click through and add your name. Save the Children is just 1000 signatures off what they need today, so any help you can give my signing and forwarding around would be great!

Beans36 · 15/05/2012 19:17

I have just restored my iPhone on iTunes and seem to have lost a load of photos. Oh bollocks. I wish I understood technology!!!!! Trying to get Peppa Pig series on it for our flight this weekend and think I've ballsed the whole thing up.

Mom - I have signed the petition.

Aubs - been white lighting your cousin. How is she doing now? Please let us know. How horrid for her.

Both nippers tucked up. I am very pleased with myself. Although both exhausted by our playdoh this afternoon with Ice Age 3 on in the background

Wow, if that crossing out works, I'll be very proud!

Beans36 · 15/05/2012 19:17

I AM PROUD!

sybilfaulty · 15/05/2012 19:58

SOrry to be absent I am rubbish. Thanks for all the kind words. Funeral last week, sad but a good punctuation point as it was a long time since he died. But DH's aunt has now died (although this was expected) so we are off to do it all again, with many of the same people, this time next week.

I have sprained my ankle and can only hobble. This is what happens when you don't drink in the week. When I was lushing it large on the wine last week, I was fine.

Love to you all. I'll try to post properly tomorrow but am too shattered now.

KiwiPanda · 15/05/2012 19:59

Beans have you got a mac and handbrake? If you have can put DVDs onto your iPod/iPad/apple device Grin

Mom have signed petition. Definitely enjoying maternity leave far more this time around so it's not that I'm desperate to be back at all, just know that I am not by nature a SAHM. Deeply admire those who are actually as i think they have far more patience and imagination than me. I run out of ideas for entertaining small people extremely quickly..

KiwiPanda · 15/05/2012 20:01

Oh and Pingu that sounds all a bit scary. You actually sound very relaxed about it but presumably all a bit stressful? DH had something similar as a child actually, compounded by the fact that his mum actually is profoundly deaf, but he is fine.

OP posts:
KiwiPanda · 15/05/2012 20:02

Oh x posted with you Sybs - poor thing what a tough time you are having. Many hugs to you x

OP posts:
VagolaJahooli · 15/05/2012 20:04

Well done on the crossing out, that was quite a lot to cross out. My boys love that movie.

Mom I signed. I think you just buy tickets to the Olympic park. Maybe we could get a little Olympic meet up together.

Blimey Kiwi your fast. I think my pb for an official 5km distance is 24.57 (pre kids obviously) but it was a 5km at the end of a sprint triathlon. However, while I still need to increase my speed, I definitely run a lot harder post kids, I seem to be able to cope with the discomfort of running above a comfortable pace. I've heard childbirth can make women believe they are capable of more than they realised from their bodies, and their ability to cope with pain, Lady's 48 hrs post CS is a perfect example. Now I just need to get some bigger leg muscles.

VagolaJahooli · 15/05/2012 20:07

Gosh Ping forgot to say, that's all a but stressful with the deafness and glue ear thing. I was the school nurse for a deaf school in North London, they are a very good resource if you need any information.

Hi Sybs.

KiwiPanda · 15/05/2012 21:12

Vag definitely - I'm far better runner now I think, though I suppose am also focussing on it more rather than as part of Tri training. I have run a couple of sub-23 min 5ks as part of training in last few weeks - think my running club is hugely helpful in getting me fitter and faster as the track sessions we do are pretty brutal!

Pingu ditto with advice should you want/need any only from my mum in law, obviously, as I said, deaf herself but also teacher at deaf unit of a mainstream school for many years.

OP posts:
LadyThompson · 15/05/2012 23:38

Ladeeeeeez

Brr, it is cold, too. Still got the coal burner going (well, we have to as it powers the radiators). Costing a fortune in coal. Presume you've still got yours roaring too, Indith? I expect you have if you've had snow (we had fat hail yesterday, big rain today...)

I watched Silk earlier, the new series. It's very good, although Maxine Peake is too good at her job to be true (plus a little self-righteous).

KP - how is DD2? Tonsilitis must be very nasty in a tot. And how are you feeling today, Beans? I always really enjoy The Apprentice as well but I do think the girls are particularly duff this year.

Oh Sybs, I am horrified to hear that you have had more bad news - and a sore ankle to boot. Good times have to be round the corner. Love to you. And much, much restorative Wine

And talking of awful, your poor cousin, Aubs. Any news? Was it a crash section? It sounds horrendous. I hope they can sort it out and she heals very fast.

How lovely to see some of the old gang back - hey Mom, good to see you! Glad the nanny is working out, that sounds really positive. But DS1 waking up in the 5s - uurrrrrrrghhh. Well, he won't be doing that when he's a teenager Grin Any trips home in the offing? Talking about trips, Rubes zooms off to fancy places for work! I am seeing her tomorrow and Spot is coming as well, which will be lovely.

But yes, we need some London meet ups. After the weekend, I am going to peer at the diary and start chucking dates around.

And Pingu - that is spooky as I was only thinking about you at the weekend! Sorry to hear about DD1's ears - I hope you can get the treatment underway asap....Glad you are in your new pad (ok, not so new now) - don't worry about the new area - it'll come. But you know my opinion about living in London as opposed to living out - and pleasant as I am starting to find it round here, I miss London like an actual person. DP finally heard about his Recorder application on Saturday (can you believe it, the process took 14 months) and he didn't get it Sad He's gutted. He didn't think the third stage went well (the interview and role play) but after this length of time I think he had started to dream he'd got it, poor chap. Ho hum. Anyway, last time I saw you he was doing that and it was in Sept so that must make your DD2 8 months! Wow! She was about two weeks then!

Vag, I'd love to see you that week. I'm in Brussels the weekend of 28th July but we are back on the Sunday so all good for the following week. I did smile about the possibility that my 48 hours post section made me more aware of what my body was capable of Grin I think it made me most aware of what painkillers were NOT capable of Grin Grin But still, hand on heart, happy happy times. Hmm, isn't it funny that there is such a duality about these experiences, though? I found my last pregnancy really hard in some ways, really gruelling, yet really lovely in others. That sounds a bit banal but I guess you all know what I mean.

Right, orf to bed with me.

VagolaJahooli · 16/05/2012 08:12

I think you had a particularly ineffective pain relief treatment Lady, wasn't the epidural needle leaking? Anyhoo what I meant was getting through pregnancy, childbirth and all that has made me less likely to slow up at that point in races where I start thinking "oh I'm feeling a bit tired/uncomfortable/oh god my lungs are going to explode" I now just push on and even run a bit harder. I also train a lot harder too, but I think part of that may be to do with time limitations so I just use my training time more effectively.

Poor DH I was bemoaning the fact that I have trained so hard yet still have to work really hard to run a race in a time that I used to run the same distance in, after I'd swam and ridden a bike. DH thought he would console me by saying that it is because I am 13 kg heavier and carrying all that extra weight slows me down Hmm. I know he meant it in the best possible way, but, well you girls understand. I think I'd rather he'd said its because I'm older. I also saw the race day photos, I still look huge.

Lady what is a Recorder? Sorry he didn't get it, I gather it's a post that doesn't come up often.

KiwiPanda · 16/05/2012 08:42

Vag Exactly - when I'm suffering a bit I think to myself "come on woman, you gave birth TWICE, once with no pain relief whatsoever, you can bloody well run another 2 laps get a grip.." Wink

Re getting faster though - I have to say I have found weight loss has helped, though I suppose it's also a side effect. That, and deciding about 3 months ago that an entire bag of M&S doughnuts, while very tasty, is perhaps not the healthiest mid afternoon snack .. My DH commented yesterday that I am also much happier when doing regular exercise (well actually he said "much less grumpy" but I'll choose to edit his words into a nicer form..) and that's definitely true.

Awful nigiht last night though - poor DD2 is on the mend from her tonsilitis but is on anitbiotics which have awful side effects - she's got the runs and an epic case of the grumps and was up, god, about 20 times last night - worse than when she had the temperature and the sore throat.. I kind of wish I'd held out a day to see if she got better by herself rather than resorting to antibiotics but she had had the temp for 3 days by that point. Is there anything I can give her to help? My cleaner (how middle class am I) was just telling me that in Poland whenever they prescribe antibiotics for children they also prescribe something like probiotics to protect the stomach. DD2 has three more days of the drugs to get through so I feel I ought to help somehow..??

OP posts:
sybilfaulty · 16/05/2012 08:43

Vag, I am sure you don't look huge. I think men don't know what to say to make us feel better, and so open mouth without really thinking it through. Being older does make us slower, plus all the strains etc of pregnancy on yr body can't help. I thought you looked gorgeous when I saw you last time and would be very happy to have your figure.

Do you think I would explode if I took some left over drugs from my C section for my ankle? It's dicloflex, which I have been prescribed for sprains before, but it's best before Dec 2008? Would I be ok do you think? Ankle is killing me.

Have a good day everyone Smile

sybilfaulty · 16/05/2012 08:45

Kiwi, would some live yoghurt help to calm her tummy? I always take that when I have ABs as otherwise I get terrible trots. Can't do any harm I suppose. Poor little thing, hope she feels better soon.

KiwiPanda · 16/05/2012 09:03

Sybil Good idea, I will try mixing some with her fruit to sweeten it up a bit as the live yoghurt I have in the fridge might be a bit sharp for a baby's tastebuds - though you never know...!

OP posts:
JamInMyWellies · 16/05/2012 09:29

About to attempt something I have never done before cycle 7 mies to the gym do a class and cycle home again. I may die. If I dont return later for a catch up someone send a search party out for me. Armed with fat coke and chocolate.

Indith · 16/05/2012 10:19

Gosh Pingu, do keep us updated. Hope all goes well with tests etc. FWIW my dh was virtually deaf when he was small until various things were spotted and sorted out, he learned to speak through lip reading and is still a very good lip reader which can be very handy at times Grin.

Yes yes to yoghurt. France also always gives probiotics with ABs, such a simple thing that makes a big difference.

All you runners be kind to yourselves. Children (and indeed age) changes our bodies so much, we can't expect to do as before.

Lady how are you using your stove at the moment? You say it costs a fortune. How much is your fuel? Just lighting it daily is not very efficient, you should be able to burn less fuel having it on low 24 hours a day than you would putting it on for a faster burn afternoon/evening. Depends on the age of your stove I suppose but basically with ours the fuel cost of having it on all the time is roughly equal to the electric of having the immersion heater on for an hour for kids baths and washing up. We are at that annoying inbetween point at the moment of lighting it some days and not others depending on amount of sun (our living room gets all the sun so we just stay and play in there) but I think I'm going to clean it out for the summer now.

My brain doesn't work. Had some rough nights with ds2 being unsettled and last night was a feeding marathon. Remembered this morning ds1 has an eye appointment at the hospital at 12 today so wrote a note, popped into school to pass it to his teacher (if left to him it would stay in his bag til he remembered some time next week) together with his ABs. It took the TA to point out he didn't need the ABs in school since he wouldn't be there for lunch Grin. So I have to grab him at 11.20, then dd at 11.30 then leg it to hospital and drag then to the clinic on time and at some point shove some lunch down them and deliver ds abck to school. Best go make some packed lunches!

Indith · 16/05/2012 10:48

Oh arses, ds1's class cake sale tomorrow so I need to bake at some point too. Have put bowl and eggs on the worktop so I remember .

VagolaJahooli · 16/05/2012 12:30

Sybs, I love you, your very sweet. He is right though, just not very tactful, this is the same man who said "no your bottom is as big as it was before you got pregnant", you should have seen his face after that howler slipped out. Kiwi, if only I was eating loads of donuts, we have sworn off takeaways and I am eating mainly soup for tea these days. I no longer eat the boys leftovers and i have small meals and snack on magere kwark (a low fat fermented milk/cheese thing which is like yoghurt) with almonds (good for protein and blood sugar regulation). I have definitely seen an increase in weight loss since the PT & stopping BF, but I think the main problem is apart from the training and cycling to places with the boys my life is a lityke too sedentary. Basically sitting in the couch too much. My summer resolution is to get out and about more and walk as much as possible. This will be helped along by the fact that we lose the car at the end of the month. Ds2 is big on getting out on his scooter so will get out with him a bit more for a scoot about.

Indith I'm exhausted just reading your post.

DeidreBarlow · 16/05/2012 15:59

Flying visit...huge hello topingu & mom. So nice to see everyone again! So while I'm on the subject WG where the hell are you?? Hope your lurking. Trace can we have a little more of you pleaseSmile. And rubes put the cocktails down a second Wink

vag That is totally the kind of thing DH would say about my weight. I don't think for a second they think what they are saying, as generally I don't find men half as sensitive about their weight as I am!

Loving all this running talk. I'm getting into it again now and the knee is holding up but I am slow. Mainly I am scared of hurting my knee again, so I reckon slow & steady is okay till my confidence in my knee grows.

sybsSorry about more sad news. How is everyone doing post funeral?

Aubs Your poor cousin, sounds awful.

lady I watched Silks last night and thought about you! It was very good, never watched it before but enjoyed it.

Right I have lamb shanks in the slow cooker and I am starving! They won't be ready till about 8 though...might go for a run in between to stop me thinking about food.

Oh and DS is improving . Who knows if it will last but have spoken at length to several people about it and what pre school should/shouldn't be doing about him. But the upshot is I don't think he needs 'assessing' or anything on a more formal level, i think he is pushing his boundaries to the limit though. I think he is a PITA for them but he is 3, and a large chunk of the group move up to school in September and so show a lot more maturity and understanding than DS. I'm hoping he will continue to improve...although he and DD now have shiny new sticker charts, DS still not over bothered but DD is so I think he cares a bit just because she does.

I'm rambling, back later hopefully!

ZuleikaJambiere · 16/05/2012 23:08

Hi, hi to Mom and Pingu, and Trace, who we don't see enough of. So lovely to hear from you all. I'd like to add Effie to Deids' roll call - just 'cause her DS has a broken arm, it doesn't mean that she has too, she can still type. Tut tut

Your post was v cheery Mom, I'm glad you are enjoying work and your boys. I am also not cut out to be a SAHM, I lack patience amongst other key skills. Saying that, I loved having 2 months at home with DD1 at the start of this ML, before DD2 arrived, because she is a little fun thing at this age. I think it'd be great to be able to take ML whenever you want - so 3 months at the start to enjoy the snuggles, 3 months at age 3 for fun and 3 months at age 5, to be a lady what lunches while they are at school Grin. Can't see many employers liking my plan though!

Poor little Pingu, with her glue ear, I hope it resolves quickly. Didn't Trace's P have glue ear, or was it something else? I remember she had some hearing probs

I hope Beans, Vag, mini Beans and mini Kiwi are feeling better, and there is less eye gunk chez LadyT. Gosh, and lots of white light to Aubs cousin, that sounds horrible

Sorry to hear of yet more bad news Sybs, how is DH taking it all at the moment?

Trace/LadyT Flylady is my new hero, she recommends adding one more little task to your routine each day to keep on top of housework and get rid of clutter, and it is making a difference. Google her (or do as I do, and lurk on a thread in the good housekeeping topic, as her website is a bit twee and pink and full of guff such as 'FLYing is Finally Loving Yourself' or 'today write inspirational quotes in your journal' )

Any idea where you might visit this month LadyT?

Are the school runs getting any easier Kayz?

Your DH is hilarious Vag, with his completely way of the mark, foot in mouth compliments! Grin Agree with being at home not being conducive to exercise, I've joined Weight Watchers this week, in a bid to shift half a stone before my sisters wedding - that's a pound a week, which I hope is doable. The good news is I'm only 1lb heavier than I was on my own wedding day, but the bad news is I'm 2 dress sizes bigger Shock. I am living proof of muscle weighing more than fat. I'm not sure where I can squeeze exercise in, especially as I'm going back for more physio on my pelvis as it still feels quite SPDish, so don't think he'll actually let me go swimming or cycling (my preferred exercise). Will just have to power walk with the pram when DD2 is at pre school

Did you survive the cycling/gym/cycling Jam?

Grand news about DS Deids, hopefully that phase has passed now Smile

Right, time for sleep. DD2 is sleeping through most nights now, well until 530/6ish - which is too early a start for me. I think I preferred the waking at 3 and then sleeping til 7. But it's a step in the right direction, and a step which DD1 took about 9 months to reach, so I am grateful. Night night all
