Snowing here!

Mmmmcheese · 31/01/2012 10:48

Sorry you're in for the long-haul LMF, at least he's getting all the care he needs and shows he's a feisty little chap pulling out his tube! Also means you don't have the bother of expressing. Are they feeding you now?

NorthernChinchilla · 31/01/2012 10:57

I really hope he's on the mend now LMF, and here's wishing you and the family a lovely weekend at home- fingers crossed everything goes to plan, but sounds like Octoboy is getting there.

Just drizzle here mmmm, am waiting for it to abate so I can get to the PO. Think Poirot, a banana and feeding LO call...

AnAirOfHope · 31/01/2012 11:33

snowing but not sticking here.

I'm not going to meeting as i have no childcare due to gas leak Sad

mopsytop · 31/01/2012 11:35

Hoe he is on the mend LMF and that you can go
Home on Friday.

jigglebum · 31/01/2012 11:38

Morning ladies - sorry to hear you are still in hospital LMF, hope you are all home soon.

mopsy - hope you are on the mend soon too - horrible being ill when you have someone else to look after too.

aethel - hope the tongue tie is sorted tomorrow as feeding for that long must be draining for both of you.

DS is at preschool today so have managed to clean the house and put washing away whilst freya is asleep.

At the moment we dont put F down until after her last feed (which DH does). He starts it a t 10 and she is normally down in her moses basket by 11. But like someone else mentioned after the morning feed she tends to conk out again so does need her 12 hours at night, so I would like to start trying to get her down in the evenings and then still do a feed at 10 pmish in her room. Trouble is I feed her for most of the evening at the moment and then she still wolfs down her bottle at ten , so not sure this will happen until she is on bottles as my milk supply in the evening seems really low, despite always having fed her at this time. It was the same with DS and in the end I gave him a bottle in the evening from about 3 months. On the basis that I really dont like bf ing anyway and only do it out of a sense of guilt I will probably do the same at 3 months and try and get her down earlier

I think teething nappies do smell horrid if I remember and can be quite green.

Hoping to go into my work today at lunchtime to show them F. Bit of a drive though so not sure if I can be bothered!

luckysevens · 31/01/2012 12:01

lmf hope you get him home soon.

mopsy hope you're feeling better.

kate hope your DD enjoys her first day at nursery.

Both DC's have woken up with coughs today. Eva isn't coughing very often but when she does it sounds awful, I'm worried she might be getting croup. She's also extra cuddly and has only taken 30ml of her last bottle despite acting like she was starving.

YBR · 31/01/2012 12:17

BabyYBR has a hernia; referral to paediatric surgery. My Doc had a medical student with him, and then called a colleague since he'd not seen one before, and they all examined LO, who was admirably calm about it.Smile
According to Dr. Google we expect a op to repair it and a night in hospital. I guess I'll find out if they feed nursing mothers here (not that I expect it to be edible appetizing).

LMF hoping things go well for you and your octopus.
aethel hope the tongue-tie thing works out.

Northern this house watches not just Poirot, but also Marple, Midsommer, Lewis, Rosemary&T, ... (collective name "death on the box"). I actually like the fact that I've seen it all before because it means I can dip in and out. I guess you are more discerning?

luckysevens · 31/01/2012 12:29

Sorry ybr, did they say how long you can expect to wait before getting an op date?

SoTiredoftheWheelsontheBus · 31/01/2012 12:32

LMF, hope things go well and you can both go home soon.

YBR - DS1 had an inguinal hernia that came up when he was 6 weeks old. We had the same thing - "would you mind waiting as one of the other GPs has students in with him, and it would be useful training experience for them to see it/pop it back in". We were referred to a different hospital than the one he was born in (as they don't do surgery on babies that young). It wasn't considered urgent urgent, so they waited until he was 12 weeks before operating. As he was bf, we could feed him for later on the morning of his operation than we could have done if he was bottlefed (because bmilk is more easily digested)

It went well, but at the time, handing this tiny baby over to the anaesthetist was (and remains) by far the hardest thing I've ever had to do. We were given a pager thingy, and was told we'd be paged when he was in recovery. I think it took about an hour, or 90 minutes, and when we saw him, ds was crying. It was harder than usual to comfort him, but he fed quite soon afterwards, which helped to calm him down. He was kept in overnight, and I slept next to him (think I was fed, can't really remember). He was on a monitor overnight (I think this was routine, as they said they didn't have any concerns, it was just that he was so young for general anaesthetic), and it was a bit worrying, as babies heartrates are so much faster than adults, and each time it went above a certain level, it would start beeping, but the staff said he was fine. He went home the next day. Soon afterwards you couldn't even see the scar. Hope it all goes well for baby YBR, and that you don't have to wait too long.

YBR · 31/01/2012 12:40

I don't know which of the Leicester hospitals we'd be referred to, asked the GP and he wasn't sure. We just have to wait for a letter, which we expect to be soon.

I'm calm about it now, but I'm sure I'll be overwrought stressed when it comes to general anesthetic time.

KateM77 · 31/01/2012 12:49

YBR So sorry to hear about the hernia. As SoTired said, the hernia op is relatively straightforward and you should only need a one night stay. DD had three ops and we had to stay in for a week each time. There were loads of kids on the same ward having hernia ops, and they were in and out in no time. All BF mothers on the ward were fed. As SoTired also said, we were referred to another hospital where they performed surgery on babies, and I can second that sending your baby down to go under anaesthetic is horrendous (I had to stay in the room and let DH take her down to theatre because I couldn't stop crying) but babies are amazingly resilient and recover incredibly quickly. Sending hugs to you. Remember you have support here as and when you need it.

KateM77 · 31/01/2012 12:50

YBR x-post. We live near Northampton but were referred to Leicester Royal Infirmary. The staff on ward 10 (where you may end up) were amazing, so if you don't go there rest assured you'll be in safe hands. And there's a kitchen on the ward where you can make hot drinks and toast!

msbuggywinkle · 31/01/2012 12:53

Sorry you're in for so long lmf but great that he doesn't seem to need the Ng tube, much easier than expressing!

Jealous of the snow...just grey cold and drizzly here.

ybr for future reference, brilliant article on bfing and surgery hope the referral comes quickly.

Kri5ty · 31/01/2012 13:20

lmf hope he is doing better now :)

mopsy how are you doing??

OH isn't convinced about sauls milks as "ths gp said he is fine and babies dont get problems"

I should have been getting a visit from the health visitor today but she didnt turn up grrr

anyway off to get his BCG and tomorrow he has his first lots of jabs :( i feel like the worst mother in the world for putting him through pain!!

mopsytop · 31/01/2012 13:26

Thanks kri5ty and everyone. Beginning to feel rough again. Doctor rang back and said doesn't sound like mastitis, is prob a virus. And the fever will come and go. And will be worse at night. And just to rest and dose with paracetamol and call back if it gets worse. Hope minimopsy doesn't catch it.

aethelfleda · 31/01/2012 13:49

Ooookay mopsy, see how it goes but it could be developing mastitis: keep checking your boobs for red strips or patches: if you still feel fluey and have asymmetrical pain or any redness then ring back for a second opinion/review discussion with the GP. (((hug)))

Glad you're doing Ok lmf and hope octoboy gets off the pxygen smoothly and soon.

Kri5ty you're protecting your LO by immunising, that's the sign if a GOOD mummy! my mate used to work in a childrens ICU and looked after some of the littleys who weren't immunised and got really sick with the so called "harmless" illnesses that resulted.

msbuggywinkle · 31/01/2012 14:00

kri5ty you're also protecting children like mine, who can't be vaccinated (I was hospitalised as a pre-schooler with a vaccine reaction, there can be a genetic link. We tried delayed schedule of vacs with DD1 but she had seizures), and children and adults who have immune problems.

OiMissus · 31/01/2012 14:26

Hugs to ybr, lmf and mopsy.
Well I just struggled for a hour to keep LO calm while I joined a conference call. We managed quite well only to realise that no one could hear me anyway! grrr!
I sent my comments, update and questions by email. I could have done that this morning and not waited in! The weather has gone really miserable now! Sad

NorthernChinchilla · 31/01/2012 15:36

Ah, your poor LO YBR- at least it's not causing her discomfort, from what you've said? We'll all be here when it comes round to the op, and I'm sure she'll sail through. Still a really pants thing to have to deal with.
As for discerning.... ahhahhaaahahahahhaa... that's kind, but no. I would watch more, and used to when at my mum's, but OH is not a fan.

Still reckon it sounds like mastitis mopsy so would second aethel's sensible advice!

OiMissus · 31/01/2012 16:40

YBR - sharing your pain regarding the general anaesthetic. my LO was two days old when he went under, we were distraught and terrified. But of course he came out of it fine. When he came around all he wanted to do was nurse and feed, but he was too unsettled, and i was still inexperienced and struggling. HE cried and cried, it was heart breaking. He was on a drip that gave him hydration and nutrition, otherwise i would have probably given him formula. HE eventually latched on (at about midnight) and we both calmed down.
I still cry whenever i think about the general anaesthetic, half due to the memory of the fear, and half out of the guilt i feel for letting him lose a testicle. (crying now!)
The hospital (manchester) let us both (me, LO + DH) stay in our own room, because he was so young, and they fed us both too. DH was allowed to go to him in REcovery. it was corridors away and i was still recovering from the cs and had already walked loads - and i was an emotional wreck. i took the extra 30 mins to calm down. the hospital were great, they brought in a proper hospital bed for me too, rather than making me sleep on the fold down bed.

Mmmmcheese · 31/01/2012 17:44

YBF just to add to the surgery stories, DS had a hernia in his groin when he was about 3 months old. However one of the GPs at my practice thought it was a tumour! Scared me so much and tthey said he would be referred for an ultrasound in 3 weeks time. I was going out of my mind. Luckily he was still under a paediatrician at the hospital due to his prematurity and I called him and insisted on being seen that afternoon, which to his credit he did and immediately said it was a hernia. So glad I was a pushy Mum!

Anyway, the op was very straightforward although of course scary at the time. As he was the youngest on the list that day he got to go first. I went with him right onto the operating table and he was looking at me as he was put under. Think it was around an hour later that we were called into recovery where I bfed him immediately then he fell asleep. After another feed we were allowed to go home that afternoon. He didn't seem in any pain or distress and was just a bit sleepy. You can barely see the scar now and wouldn't know it was there unless you knew.

When we got to the carpark we found that DH had forgotten to lock the car that morning. Was in Lewisham so amazed that the car and all its contents were still there!

On a totally random note I have got a chicken and chorizo stew in the slow cooker and it has been smelling amazing all afternoon!
