Sorry Meglet if you wanted to start the thread with your title but I thought I'd best do it while there was still one space to post the link to this one on the last one.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

just popped on briefly as dc playing happily - dd1 some rather violent sounding hockey with a recorder and a toy golf ball, and dd2 is taking her toys for a wander in the toy buggy with many many toy bags hanging off the handles - must copy me

Big congratulations to Carrie - and welcome to baby 3.

dd2 still utterly disinterested in giving up nappies - although a couple of times she has announced she is about to wee. But she is adamant wants to wear nappies - the only pants she likes to wear are pulled on by her on top of nappies after raiding her sister's drawer

Debs75 · 31/08/2011 14:19

Star and bec I have always treated ds a bit different to the dd's, but you have to treat ASD different because they are different. If they weren't then it wouldn't be a disability.
DS is the same with the auditory problems. They say his hearing is fine it just gets lost when it gets in there. Sometimes I feel all I do is shout. Sign language has helped a lot for us. He gets his chances as well before a serious telling off/removing him but he can be so violent, usually towards himself we have to give on some things as they are just not worth all the bruises.
I can't wait for him to go back to school as he will then be a bit happier and we won't have to listen to Thomas or Mario on the computer

Becaroooo · 31/08/2011 15:29

debs If I hear the Top Gear theme tune once more I think it may send me over the edge Angry

notcitrus · 31/08/2011 16:22

Phew - A has had a haircut, with almost no tears! Did have to return 3 times until the owner turned up though, as the other experienced hairdresser remembered him from 15 months ago and refused to go anywhere near him and told the new lass not to either.
So I'm no longer accompanied by a cross between Boris Johnson and a toddling haystack...

becaroo - A does that 'having to finish' thing too, including touching certain things. So do I, for that matter. But then I'd probably get diagnosed with ASD too on a bad day - any online test says I am but they never account for deafness and geekiness. My autistic friend keeps getting on my wick by insisting that A and dn are on the spectrum - yes, they are definitely a pair of geeks who may well become engineers or mathematicians, but they also both have good social skills and good awareness of others for their age. In fact it's now becoming noticeable that their emotional intelligence is getting better than hers, which may be a problem if they don't want to play with her soon, not to mention all the questions about why is it OK for Auntie to say xyz but I'm not allowed? Suppose I'll just have to say that she can't help it and you can and stop further questions there.

I do get paranoid that I wouldn't notice if A did have ASD - to me, it's obvious that you have to ensure you have a child's attention and they're looking at you before you ask them to do anything (deaf awareness 101), I totally empathise with tactile issues, and react badly to distraction - but we've discussed with nursery a few times and they always confirm that they've had children with possible or confirmed ASD before, and A definitely isn't one of them - he's just a stubborn child obsessed with numbers who knows his own mind... He got 'A plays nicely with all his friends' on his last report, so I guess I should relax a bit.

Becaroooo · 31/08/2011 19:15

NC snort @ "Boris Johnson" Grin

Tbh I think dh is on the spectrum too, but could never say anything...my MIL would cut my heart out with a spoon if I mentioned I thought her darling son was anything other than "normal".

Oh, how I hate that word Angry

I can be a bit OCD about some things too...I clean too much, cant rest if I know something is in the "wrong" place but thats partly to do with my upbringing I think (3 dc in a very small house, stuff EVERYWHERE)

I think everyone has tactile issues of some sort, dont they??? I hate the feel of velvet and the sensation of pears in my mouth - like wet sand (but I concede I am a bit odd!)

StarlightMcKenzie · 31/08/2011 19:26

ASD is only useful as a label if you need it to access essential services and support. It's a bit of a wierd one to be honest because there is no medical test, it is diagnosed by consistent difficulties and behaviours. If they are sometimes there and sometimes not, then they are not consistent.

Becaroooo · 31/08/2011 19:29

star this is what confuses me most I guess...ds1 has had behaviours since he was an infant/toddler BUT doesnt exhibit all of them at school.

Now, I realise a lot of dc act very differently at school than they do at home and ds1 is bright and due to the bullying at his old school seems to understand that some things he does are not appropriate at school/in public.

The (completely shit) comm paed suggested that this ability to tone down his behaviours meant he wasnt on the spectrum.....your thoughts?

StarlightMcKenzie · 31/08/2011 20:40

My thoughts are that that is bollocks. Lots of children with ASD can learn behaviours, otherwise what would be the point of teaching them?

But this is why early dx is essential, because the behaviours need to kind of be consistent and observed BEFORE they are trained out of some of them. That might sound like a contradiction but it isn't. A child with ASD who has learned how to behave as if he hasn't got his problems is like the proverbial duck, appearing to glide through but paddling like crazy amongst all the other 'ducks' who have inbuilt jet engines. The problem is there but under the surface. He'll need a rest now and then, and occassionally a tow to keep up.

Becaroooo · 01/09/2011 10:21

Yes. Thats exactly what I think too star Was very Hmm at a paed telling me that tbh....

Am so fed up of ds1 being overlooked simply because he is bright enought to know that not everyone behaves as he does and doesnt want to be made fun of!

Took ds1 to school today - 1st day of year 4!!! Dropped the letter into the school secretary....lets see what happens!!......

Becaroooo · 01/09/2011 10:27

So, Tobys 1st morning at nursery!

Am now twirling my thumbs feeling sick til noon Sad

He was ok when I left, told him I would be back after "doing some jobs"

He was very excited this morning..."I going to my new school!"

I miss him Sad

I hope he's ok? Would they think I was insane if I rang up and asked if he was ok??

Becaroooo · 01/09/2011 10:37

.....nursery just rang!

He is fine and playing happily

Becaroooo · 01/09/2011 10:38

star Forgot to mention, this was the same paed who told me getting ds1 a dx wouldnt actually help him and could actually harm his future!!!

Truly, he was a massive knob

Debs75 · 01/09/2011 18:43

Bec after we got ds's dx we were told not to push for more as it woud go against him in the future. I on't see how as he is probably as bad as you could get with the violent behaviour and that is what puts people off.

We are off to Flamingoland tomorrow and dd1 stupidly told Robyn so she has been asking all day if she can see the animals yet. If she plays up tonight I might let her sleep with dd and her friend. that'll teach her

CappuccinoCarrie · 01/09/2011 22:19

where's the long post I wrote earlier gone?!!
anyway...Well Done bec for surviving today!

Meglet · 01/09/2011 23:51

debs Flamingoland!!! I hope it's as fun as it sounds!

Hello carrie. hope you're all doing ok. Has E's tongue tie been done yet? (((squidge for E)))

I am pathetically broody. I think it's the stress of DS about to start school that's sending me a little mad, hopefully I'll chill out once he's started. Being guinea-pig-less for the first time in 30 years has affected me more than it should Sad.

FannyPriceless · 02/09/2011 08:52

We are off on holiday today. To Exmoor. Or, as I like to call it, The Land of Ponies and Smugglers' Coves. Clearly I read too many Famous Five / Pullein Thompson books as a child!

We'll be back for DD's birthday next week. The Early Rider balance bike is waiting in the garage, along with several miles of wrapping paper! I have also been informed by madam that she is getting Peppa Pig for her birthday. What? I didn't even know she knew who Peppa was. Better go and buy some commercialised tat then.Hmm

carrie Loving the photo. What a lovely happy family!Smile

Becaroooo · 02/09/2011 10:43

Have a great time FP

debs Just not sure what on earth he meant by it, really. No takes any bloody notice of dx anyway IME!! Angry

carrie He cried when he saw me at home time...and wouldnt have a nap and then was cycling with his brother til after 7pm and then went to bed - ws asleep in 2 mins and didnt wake up til after 8am!!!

Blimey.

Not sure how monday will go...think he is more aware now that mummy doesnt come back for a while Sad

Sorting out some osteopathy for my back...2 hours sleep a night is NOT enough!

Meglet · 02/09/2011 13:38

Hello from my sunny garden Grin. I'm making the most of my last free time for weeks (my work hours change once ds starts school). I have shed loads of things to do but I'm not budging until the sun goes in, or 4pm-ish when I might got and get some petrol.

Have a great hols fp!

CappuccinoCarrie · 02/09/2011 15:36

Have a wonderful holiday fanny!

Tongue tie appt is Monday morning, eek ((squidge back for meg followed by some milky vom especially for you)). Then MW on Wed, HV on Thurs, newborn hearing screening the following Friday. Good thing the hospital has a Costa coffee Grin

Oh and DD's first day of school next wednesday :( I'm going to miss her more than I can say. At least she is ready and excited and positive. Am practicing my fake smiles and holding-it-together.

E had his day 5 check and heel prick today. He's gone from 9lb 5oz to 9lb so no worries about weight loss, should be signed off by MW next Wed. What a different experience from when I had F 3 years ago and was in and out of the doctors with thrush/womb infection/piles etc.

Lollyheart · 02/09/2011 20:43

Meglet Flamongoland was brilliant. Robyn even went on some rides which she thought was great. We saw loads of animals, Giraffes, Rhinos, Tigers, Baboons, Zebras, even some Human exhibit, they were boring the just slept or asked for money.
Was exhausted by the time we got back home but we had great fun and only spent £100 on 7 of us. I wish all days out were that cheap
