Hello superpenguin Thomas sounds like a happy wee man, good luck with TTC no.2, we're putting that off for another few months!!
me we can't afford the whole sit down meal too, and our family and friends all have to travel some distance so its not like we could invite some and not others.
We're not getting married till 4pm, then we're having a buffet at 7pm (although there will be some nibbles when everyone arrives at the hotel after the ceremony, probably fizzy and strawberries or something like that) and then music starts at 8pm and hopefully there will be lots of dancing!!!
Not having seated eating means we cut out all the table arranging / place names, who sits where / flowers and centrepieces / wedding favours all that malarky as well as being expected to put wine on the table it's saving quite a lot of money (and everyone knows we're skint). Food will be stuf that's easy eat without cutlery, and puddings will be little glasses filled with lemon syllabub, choc mousse etc so can eat with a teaspoon. I'm sure there will be tables and chairs free if people feel the need to sit down. Its a lovely hotel and luckily we know the managers so don't have to pay to hire, just for the food.
Then, just because lots of people have come a long way we're doing a bbq at home on the sunday, we've got a HUGE agricultural shed that we often clear out for parties (don't have to tidy the house :D ) and we'll ask everyne to bring a dish / bottle if they can, we'll supply lots too! We were going to get married in the shed at home but we have a 3 mile long dirt track to the house that requires a 4 x4 would have been too much of a faff to organise.
I've been to a few weddings where friends have hired out a village hall or such like, and put on a hot meal of stew and hot bread / stovies / hog roast, something simple that most people like that you can eat easily, you can always put out some tables and chairs but not place names iyswim? Make sit more informal which isn't for everyone. I don't know if you have a big garden, or family has, my sil had a wedding in a marquee in her garden last year and she managed to keep costs right down.
I also bought my dress from Monsoon rather than a bridal shop (although it is very simple and not everyone's taste). My mum is doing the flowers and my mil is doing the cake.
Sorry that was a bit long winded!!! Suddenly realised I'm a hell of a lot more organised than I gave myself credit for!!!!!!
We just wanted a big party really, but its not for everyone I realise that, there are a few corners you can cut to save money though. Do you have any friends that are really good photographers for example?? I asked a friend to do our photos as a wedding gift (obviously we'll pay to have them printed) as she takes beautiful photos, and that's a few hundred quid saved there!!
Phew, sorry to bore everyone!
