KPidgeon - I gave weaning a go 2 weeks ago but then put it on pause. She has been waking several times a night recently and when we started on the food again this week she went back to her 10pm till 5:30am pattern. So for me it made a difference.

Anyway... haven't got long to catch up, will try again later. I quickly wanted to say though that the breastflow bottles are working-ish. She takes from them really slowly though. She still won't touch formula which is tiring me out with all the expressing I'm doing. :(

Better rush, OH is doing stuff while I'm slacking off, not something he takes well to. Confused

pettyprudence · 08/08/2011 20:40

Halo I am also an earplug user! My mum laughed at me that most people get monitors so they can hear their baby more and i got earplugs......

RE: weaning I was planning on waiting 4-6weeks more but Arthur started to get REALLY pissed off today when me and my friends were eating and wouldn't give him anything. I think he might be ready, but I'm not (emotionally)! I am going to give him a little go with baby cereal tomorrow morning (some of those freebies) and if he takes to it then I will start making stuff myself and go from there.

I had another friend today mention that lumps/actual solids were needed for speech development which is quite interesting as neither of these babies did the babbling/noises thing really. I just assumed it was because babies develop at different stages etc... but maybe it is linked to the food? I don't that's going to be an issue for Arthur - he's already a noisy bugger Grin

cherub59 · 08/08/2011 21:03

I think the lumpy food thing and speech is about developing mouth muscles strongly to enable the child to make different sounds correctly.....

sam26oscar · 08/08/2011 23:04

really quick post as cassie stirring!! Have started cassie on freebie cereals a couple of days days ago now Seems to like it, as she was waking more and more thru the night, it does seem to have made a difference as she has gone back to just 1 feed in the night so hopefully she just needs a dummy plug now!! also i gave her first food lunchtime in case of upset tummy then when she was ok she has her cereal at teatime so whether that helps her sleep not sure!! you watch after telling you the little minx will wake all night!!! will catch up properly later on in week as we off camping (OMG sooo not me!!) wed.

Cheeseandbiscuits · 09/08/2011 00:35

Hope everyone is at home safe and sound, am waiting up for DH and can hear sirrns and helicopters Sad love to all xxx

Lozario · 09/08/2011 09:38

Yep we were up listening to sirens and helicopters too. Scary stuff. DS saw a lady crying on the news outside her ruined shop and he sad "she's sad, someone broke her shop" :(

pettyprudence · 09/08/2011 10:51

Arthur had some cereal this morning (Im on the freebie packs too) and he very much enjoyed it! I kept expecting him to push the food back out of his mouth but he seemed happy enough to swallow it. Then i was convinced it was just the spoon he loved but nope he got cross when i gave him the spoon to play with with nothing on it so I guess we are weaning now.

Does anyone know if you can mix organix breakfast cereal with just water? Its a banana one so I dont think it would taste too boring?

Hope everyone in London (and other cities!) are ok. i had to text my sister last night to double check that my niece wasn't out looting jjb (she's a good girl but easily led astray!).

Lozario · 09/08/2011 11:03

petty yes you can, cool boiled water, or breast milk or formula :)

pettyprudence · 09/08/2011 13:49

Thanks lozario! I expressed a bit this morning but cba doing that every da!. Also I don't want to introduce formula because a)It took me so long to get bf-ing right and b)still a faff in the morning! c)CMP intolerance - im already worried/scared about introducing dairy at 6 months :(

KPidgeon · 09/08/2011 18:26

Just a quickie. E did sleep better after some pears at lunch time and baby porridge (With breast milk) at tea time. Went for 3 hour stretches, so feed and bed at 7, then woke at 10pm, 1.15am and 4.15am, then up at 6.20am. For me this is GOOOOD and much better than I've had for weeks now so am going to persevere. Today he had carrot & pear puree for lunch and porridge for tea. Sweet potato is ready for tomorrow, plus banana!

It is fun and he loves it. So now I'm going to stop worrying about it!

Also hope everyone is okay- horrible sites on the news. The only motive seems to be looting- hideous.

pettyprudence · 09/08/2011 18:51

Kpidgeon I have been boiling and puree-ing today too ready for some more food in a few days time/next week. I'm quite excited about trying out the sweet potato for some reason (my stage 1 booklet from HV had a "recipe" for sweet potato, cinnamon and breastmilk. I tasted a bit and its yummy!), also have vegetable medley, apple and banana and pear.

As I am new to this, does anyone else just chuck in baby rice in to everything or give just pureed fruit/veg?

I have started my weaning in the morning, will add lunch next week and tea the week after because I'm at the other end of weaning and worried he won't react well to something and won't sleep properly (after he has finally returned to a decent sleeping pattern!)

Muser · 09/08/2011 19:08

I haven't used baby rice at all petty, I'm just giving fruit and veg, although not in purees so probably not much help. We have also tried her on pancakes (very, very popular), bread (not very interested - she wanted my meatballs) and pasta (also popular).

She's starting to get properly interested in the food. I wasn't planning on giving her anything at lunch today but just have her sit with me so she gets used to being at the table. But as soon as I put her in her highchair she started shouting. So at first I just gave her a spoon to play with, it was not enough. A few bits of my pasta kept her very entertained.

haloflo · 09/08/2011 19:16

Firstly love to all in areas affected by these riots. I hope everyone is safe and sound and it ends asap.

petty and kpidgeon Sounds like you are both having fun weaning. I can't believe you both wear earplugs too. You should have got me on them earlier!!

Glad you had a good night kpidgeon we had a bit of a rubbish one last night (6 wake ups between 6.30pm to 7, 4 when I was asleep) but now I can block out her awake happy noises I sleep much better.

We went swimming for the first time today. Hannah seemed to really enjoy it and I definatly had fun. I don't know why its taken me this long to go but hopefully this will be a new weekly activity for us.

I also went running for the first time in a year last night. Feeling good today. Hopefully going to go 3 times a week which should do me good physically and mentally.Smile

Cheeseandbiscuits · 09/08/2011 19:20

Isobel is also another one loving her food. Fruit puree and porridge for breakfast, finger foods for lunch - brocolli was popular today, and veg puree for dinner. It is making her nappies stink! muser how old is I now, just wondering the difference btn our two girls.

Bit scary here, lots of police around. We went to the park earlier and got advised to leave in case of trouble. Told to keep door locked, lights on and windows shut but unlocked in case we need to escape. DH on late shifts and am worried about him getting across london at midnight!
halo congrats on the first run! I have been going to the gym a fair bit - it is so good both physically and mentally.

Got to go as baby awake!

Lozario · 09/08/2011 19:46

Gosh the news is scary again. cheese and baby cheese stay safe!

petty with the baby rice, it's really up to you, if you want to bulk it up to be more of a "meal", add some rice; if you are just testing out new tastes then don't bother - I used to usually add rice for DS for the "evening meal" - in the hope it would keep him going overnight! Have you got Annabel Karmel's book - that's good for ideas. I'll get it out when I start weaning Lara, don't think I'll do so for another month yet though.

halfoflo swimming is great isn't it - Lara loved it in centre parcs, we must take her again soon. Oh and I wear earplugs, they are a godsend!!!

She's feeding a bit better now, although still very distractable. Little madam.

Muser · 09/08/2011 20:15

She'll be 6 months next week cheese, 25 weeks today. How old is Izzy?

halo sounds like a rough night, but glad you're getting more sleep with the earplugs.

The riots are making me very sad. All the shops round here shut at lunchtime. I went out to the local park, but really couldn't do very much. Wanted to go and meet friends but just didn't seem worth the risk of potentially ending up in the middle of something on the way home. Hope the police overwhelm them tonight and this blows over.

pettyprudence · 09/08/2011 21:07

Don't think I will bother with baby rice then, tbh at this stage I figure I am just giving tastes? I am looking forward to the finger food bit but A is probably a bit young for that.

Halo I think I did confess to my ear plug habits on the old thread Grin I have offered them to all my friends at bf group and they all think I am crazy. Pre-Arthur I could sleep through anything......

I can't believe the "rioting" is still going on and spreading around the country. I do feel quite safe in Cardiff though. The images on tv are sickening, esp the people who have lost their homes. I feel sorry for the police, damned if they do, damned if they don't. My friends DP is on standby to be sent to London from Newport. I hope he doesn't need to be called up.

me23 · 09/08/2011 21:08

HI everyone, hope you are all safe and sound tonight. I'm quite near to Clapham so heard lots of sirens ad helicopters last night. All the shops round here shut early today.

Another one here whos started weaning before 6 months! Started on sunday he has had potato and carrot, banana custard peaches and pear and sweet potato. Not using baby rice.

We are off to MIL's in Somerset on Sunday staying till thurs really looking forward to it.

highlandbird · 09/08/2011 21:43

the rioting sounds absolutely awful, haven't got tv so haven't seen images but heard it on the radio, stay safe all of you, it makes me so angry that this sort of behaviour affects the everyday lives of normal people that haven't done anything to deserve it :(

No chance to write much tonight, A getting more and more unsetled in the evenings, I think its maybe his second tooth its taking a long time to come through. Has also decided he needs to feed every 2 or 3 hours in the night!!! [exhausted emoticon!] 5 months next week so I thnk we're going to delay weaning for a bit longer, not convinced he's quite ready for it yet although all your talk of weaning has me very excited aout it!

Bye for now, read thread most days just rarely have time to write!

sam26oscar · 09/08/2011 22:17

just popped in meant to be packing for our camping tomorrow but got caught up on here!!
ME Where about in Somerset your PIL??
highland No t.v?? Is that thru choice? I think i would quite possibly go insane without mine Grin
speaking of which i should really sky + all the programmes i will miss!!
Really hope all the riots stop you must be scared, i would be.
lots of love x

gemma4d · 09/08/2011 22:23

Hello. Haven't been here for ages, haven't even lurked I'm afraid, but I had a question and thought of this thread...

What are your little ones like in the evening? Millie (who is DD2) normally falls quite deep asleep around 9ish, but fusses and complains from about 8 on. She is tired but won't give in. She normally goes to sleep fairly easy in the day - this is a definite evening thing. DD1 was the same so I shouldn't be worrying, but I do.

I wouldn't call it colic, she isn't THAT upset - just whiny and tired - but she has pretty much always done this. Is it normal?

Coconutmummy · 09/08/2011 22:37

Marking my place. Hope you and yours are all safe and spared from recent incidents

Cheeseandbiscuits · 09/08/2011 22:40

SOunds normal to me gemma Izzy likes a good whinge at times too - even with her eyes shut!

muser Isobel is 2 weeks younger than yours. Might try her with some bread tomorrow, thanks. Glad BLW is going well - we are doing a bit of both!
highland hope you get a bit more sleep soon. Sounds tough.

Glad all the other babies are enjoying their grub!

Its eerily quiet here. Not a person on the street. I find the quiet more disconcerting. 1 1/2 hrs before DH finishes, will wait up.

Muser · 09/08/2011 23:03

Sounds normal to me too. You could try putting her down a bit earlier and see if she'll fall asleep, gemma. It may not work though

Cheese I was going to hold off on the wheat and stuff until officially 6 months in case of allergies, but I decided we were close enough and she's not really swallowing much anyway. I was thinking about doing some eggy bread but the salt in the bread worried me a bit. So far I've only given a tiny bit of flat bread when I was out for lunch, just to stop her trying to eat my tomatoey meatballs and creating a huge mess!

Cheeseandbiscuits · 09/08/2011 23:11

Hahaha, bless her..Mmm who could resist meatballs?! I'm not convinced by the 6 month allergy things, have ready the study's. Isobel has had yoghurt (natural with fruit purée), bits of my scrabbled egg and berries. Was going to offer her some Pitta bread fingers tomorrow. She's also had wheat in her rice cakes.
