So we don't scare the viroids on the antenatal thread with horror stories of no sleep, chomped boobs and endless laundry or make them envious with tales of cuteness....

That's exactly it, she wanted to give me a rest and get extra baby time. When DH went to talk to her about it she was in tears when he said it gave her an upset tummy so she will be listening more from now on. She is very supportive and even the annoying stuff is done with the best of intentions.

Was going to a festival today to see ocean colour scene but she is teething lots today and miserable so going to stay home with her as she's not keen on the bottle so at least she can comfort feed with me but DH had better get me a t-shirt!

cowboylover · 03/09/2011 13:01

With the explosions; how can something so small make so much noise!! She beat BIL in a farting comp last week Grin

vallinnapod · 03/09/2011 21:06

Hello! First 'Mumming' post!

Still in the 'golden' pre-birth haze of adrenaline, sleeping baby and just utter awe at it all.

QQ for Mamas of boys, Teddy today has started to really leak wee from the side of his nappy on to his clothes. We are at that frustrating stage of having to roll the nappy over to leave his cord exposed and I can only assume that now he is eating a bit more he is wetting more heavily. Still, thought the warm, fuzzy feeling down my right hand side when we were last feeding was a little unusual Grin

TBH once his meaconuim has gone he will be in the cloths so hopefully they will fit a bit better.

No pooplosions yet

ConfessionsOfAnAchingMind · 03/09/2011 21:24

Val I read your birth story on the other thread, tried to reply, but forgot I was disconnected from the net (baby brain) so lost it. I also had a rapid dilation, staying at home as long as possible in the bath lasted an hour (that's probably more relevant to the conversation on the other thread actually). Really pleased for you that you had such a good birth and that Teddy is being so lovely for you Grin.

As for the leaky nappy (boy or girl) I found this usually happens when the nappy is getting a bit small, though the nappy being to big can also do it. Some times random leaks just happen (like while waiting to board a 30 hour flight - 3 complete changes of clothes not really enough, but I digress)

Grin and Shock at your DD's farts COWBOY!

I'm trying to find inspiration for decorating some onsies (short sleeved vests I think they're called here) for DD. I'm crap at drawing so all my ideas die quickly as I'm scared of making them look rubbish, but I don't just want to steal copy pictures.

Baby2b · 03/09/2011 23:16

Val, we have lots of leaky nappies here too. Even got midwife to check we were putting them on tight enough (but not too tight) Blush. Oh, it Helps to make sure his willy is pointing down when new nappy put on. Once they get a bit chubbier there will be less leaks. Should be starting to use reusables soon too. I really hate the chemical smell of pampers.

Just watched dh nearly finish changing baby boy's nappy (and clothes) and he has pooed again, lol.

Can I ask what baby products you guys are using or intending to use? I have a real hatred for Johnsons so looking for decent alternatives. We are still just using water and cotton pads at the moment.

ConfessionsOfAnAchingMind · 04/09/2011 09:21

In terms of wipes I use Morrison's own brand sensitive wipes. They are the best I've used, DS and (so far) DD have never had nappy rash from them AND they are much cheaper too. Shall be trying Lidl's Tourjour brand nappies when the current pack of pampers run out (they're MN recommended!).
Bodywash we use stupidly expensive Burt's Bees as J&Js brings DS out in a rash.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention willy position makes a big difference in the leakage stakes.

Hope everyone had a good night.

Baby2b · 04/09/2011 09:54

Will give the lidl ones a try next. Put a reusable on ds this morning, but it is still a bit big on him.

I might get the burt's bees products as I love them anyway...especially the lip-balm. The other one I had seen was 'earth friendly baby' products. I feel a little bad as I have been given a lot of j&j stuff as gifts (plus the bounty packs) and it is going unused.

Another reasonably good night here. I really disliked being pregnant, but I love being a mum!

Hope everyone else got lots of sleep Smile

vallinnapod · 04/09/2011 10:47

We put our first cloth on this morning too! Got some free Mothercare Smart Nappies so he has one of those on. Maybe a touch high on his cord so will check a little later.

Have made a concerted effort to get the willy pointing down after 3 soaked baby grows last night!

Product wise we are cotton and wool and water and I aim to be for the foreseeable future (PFB and all that...!) I do have several packs of Huggies wipes for when I give in Grin I also have several products from the Green Baby Organics range (bottom balm, foam cleanser and some shampoo/shower gel) but I am aiming to hold off using any of that for as long as possible too.

We had a little co-sleep in the spare room last night which was great.

He is off to have his first Wagamamas today!

fraktious · 04/09/2011 11:59

We still use water or chamomile tea, olive oil and lavender oil in case of rash. Some organic bath wash once he was a month old but can't remember who it's by - smells yummy though.

We used nature babies sposies - no leaks when new but a couple of explosive poo leaks last month when on holiday. Leaky nappies are just life though! Putting a wrap over them can help. Flip wraps are good for that.

Cosleeping is wonderful, isn't it?!

Baby2b · 04/09/2011 12:52

I have the water wipes that I won in the competition as back up. Used a little olive oil this morning. I'm quite fussy about my products and cleaning products anyway, but still got rolled eyes from mil when she offered to change ds Grin

Ds is feeding for ten mins today and then falling asleep for half an hour. Not his usual feeding 'pattern', but not what I would expect as a growth spurt?

Eskarina · 04/09/2011 21:55

Hello. Realised I hadn't checked into the mumming thread yet. Lovely to see how everyone is getting on. We managed to get DD out to church this morning, which was quite a mission. We were late and she was screaming as we got out of the car, but fell asleep as we got inside and continued to look angelic all the way through.
We've started in the reusables for the daytime. They seem to get so wet though that I'm nit convinced by them for night time yet. Plus the little dear had a big poo explosion no fewer than 3 times last night and that's a lot of faffing about with cloth. We'll probably move to using them full time eventually.

Our biggest problem is getting here off to sleep. We don't seem to be able to get her to sleep anywhere other than in our arms, and even that is unpredictable. Like now she should be due to go down to sleep but is still gurgling away. She screams if put down. What do we do to get her to sleep? From previous night's experience she won't get to sleep until about 1 or 2 am apart from power naps too recharge her screaming muscles! Even when she does sleep its been in our bed, which I'm not totally happy about. She does sleep well in the day though, and as long as we hold her to sleep then she will sleep in her crib or basket. But I don't want a koala baby who has to be rocked to sleep over the course of several hours, I want a self-settling baby. Am I getting ahead of myself with that one?

Anyway the squawking has started again and it's time I took over from DH. Hope everyone gets some sleep tonight.

cowboylover · 04/09/2011 22:41

Esk: how old is LO now? My DD has phases like that and she has habits when falling asleep. DH plays piano and has got some symphonies on DVD and on his laptop so she loves those to settle to and always needs some noise. My MIL did look confused today when DD was in the car and wouldn't settle so I told her to turn the radio up then she was flat out!

I had some J&J bought as a gift and it really flared her ezema up so only has prescription stuff now which leaves her skin really nice! I love playing in the bath with her.

Now it's September I hope some of the baby clubs have started back up again

Baby2b · 04/09/2011 22:47

Esk, how old is your little one again? My midwife said you can't spoil a new born. Which i hope is true as my ds is 9 days old today and mostly falls asleep after feeding or in our arms. He doesn't cry much, but mostly because I spot the signs and latch him on, change him or wind him. The worst crying was definitely when I wasn't winding him enough. When he started sleeping in his crib again we realised that leaving the ensuite light on helped and that he likes the White noise of the fan. So to put it short, I'm going for the spoiled koala approach Grin

Baby2b · 04/09/2011 22:53

Oh, cross posted cowboy. Glad we are agreed on the making noise approach Grin.

Eskarina · 05/09/2011 06:09

Born the same day as yours I think baby so 10 days old now. it's not even so much about spoiling as such, just that it's very very wearing if I can't put her down even to wash my hands after changing her nappy without her screaming.
That said we had a lovely day yesterday with a much happier baby, and she's just slept for a decent stretch over night albeit in with me. We'll work on sleeping solo later maybe.

Thanks for reassurance both.

vallinnapod · 05/09/2011 08:17

I am in the school of thought you really can't spoil them at the stage too, although that is a lot easier to say when I can put DS down briefly to do minor errands, that said he hasn't had to leave anyone's arms as he has had adoring family visiting and very much wanting cuddles 24-7 which I have found far less of a 'problem' than I had worried about before birth. I had a bit of a freak out on Saturday night as we had had visitors and family all day and been out to a local fete, by about 7pm I got really claustrophobic being in the living room with everyone and with other people holding my baby so we disappeared upstairs together for a quite cuddle which 'cured' me.

I agree with noise! Crazy isn't it when you sort of get bombarded with images of people tip toeing around sleeping babies! We had our first trip to Wagamamas yesterday, he slept on the 20 min walk there, the entire time we were there and all the way back! I had fed him before we left but the restaurant must have smelt so different to anywhere he had been before, really bright and because we had the pram we were sat at the back by the kitchen with loads of clattering going on. Not an eyelid batted!

Big day today, we are visiting our new house which is about an hour away by bus and train Shock feel very brave and confident about it right now so hope it continues!! DH will be with me but still think I may be pushing it...

vallinnapod · 05/09/2011 08:25

Forgot to say, whole night with no nappy change Blush but no leakage either, we had stuck a cotton wool pad over his willy BlushBlush

vallinnapod · 06/09/2011 08:33

First 'bad' night. Unfortunately it tied in with me feeling a bit fragile. We had been out all day yesterday. Weather was lovely but turned cold and rainy on the way home and I just couldn't regulate my temperature. My whole body was almost convulsing with shivering. Very odd.

Teddy had been an angel, slept a lot. Then last night he just wouldn't settle. No bad, bawling type crying but constant grumbling cries/snuffles. DH was a superstar as he went next door with him so I could get a bit of sleep. It was just frustrating, we'd have almost understood if it was a full on upset night.

Of course he looks like and absolutely angel sleeping on my chest right now.

Oh, it was also a 4 poo day with our first minor pooplosion up the back!

ConfessionsOfAnAchingMind · 06/09/2011 09:10

Val newborns often have day and night around the wrong way and just won't settle at night til they switch their body clocks. Maybe that is what was going on with Teddy last night.

Baby2b · 06/09/2011 10:04

Hope you are getting some sleep this morning Val. We have had a couple of nights like this, which is why we co-slept last night. It makes him sleep longer and get a better day after it. I think we may also have had our first growth spurt as I had been feeding constantly and was knackered!

I'm kind of jumping between threads, we could probably do to have one new thread for expectants and mums to be on together.

fraktious · 06/09/2011 11:40

baby as so many are close to popping it's probably better to keep baby related chat and TMI birth stories over here than take over pregnancy.

It's an organic evolving thing anyway and sooner or later we'll hopefully all be over here, but it's nice to keep a thread in ante-natal for newly graduated viroids.

I just read some of my first posts on here. Ha bloody ha for that length of sleep now. 2 hourly all the way.

He is sleeping like a log this morning - and his Daddy. I, on the other hand, have been up since 7. I think I have delayed nesting I seem to have to constantly clean and organise Confused Grin He also had his right eye glued together this morning so now I am thinking I am a horrible mother with horrendous hygiene practices :( We think he may have gone a few rounds with my pelvis on that side of his face as that eye has always been a little swollen and it was the side he struggled to feed on too. MW should be here later so I will get all neurotic on her!

COAAM - when he was in utero he used to be very quite during the day and a lot more active at night so it does make sense!

Frak you mentioned you used Lavender and Tea Tree Oils with your water. How do you make these up as it is something I would like to try.

fraktious · 06/09/2011 14:09

I make a cup of chamomile tea and then add about a dessert spoon of oil mix which I keep in a bottle. You can use water with cider vinegar instead of chamomile tea and if I could find pure aloe vera gel I'd use that too. Some people add a squirt of baby shampoo to help it mix.

Oil mix is 1 tablespoon carrier oil (I use olive oil or you can use grapeseed, almond, apricot or sunflower), 1 drop lavender, 1 drop tea tree.

I also make a massage mix using the same proportions now (1tbsp, 2 drops) and you can use rose or orange in that instead of the others.

Meant to say don't worry about the pelvis bashing - if you're worried take him to see a cranio-osteopath. I knew a fab one in Ealing but that's probably a bit far for you!

DD came out back to back (no wonder it fecking hurt more than DS) and she looked like she had been in a bar fight. The bruising was all gone in a few days and the stork marks are now nearly gone. Teddy will soon be over the trauma of birth and swelling free.
