i have a you are what you eat cookbook and that has some recipes using tempeh in it... ever tried that/

OP posts:
starlover · 23/11/2005 21:39

ok seitan is made from gluten and is apparently very firm and

"Often called 'meat of wheat' because of its amazing ability to mimic meat in taste and texture, Seitan has been a favorite with vegetarians and vegans in this country for several decades"

maybe that's what the chinese places use?

OP posts:
roosmum · 23/11/2005 21:40

Ds is 13th Feb. Not crawling either, only just sitting, long may it continue!

We've still got locks on all the kitchen cupboard doors so he can rampage freely in there when he finds his legs. He is desperate to get at the alphabet magnets on the fridge though, and they're a bit small, so may have to move them.

Tonight he had milk for his tea... he is full of cold and sticky eyes and very sorry for himself. And he is expert at not swallowing medicine. Holds it in his mouth till you're not looking and then spits it back out.

nik72 · 24/11/2005 08:21

Hi all,
Dd born 3rd March (a week late), started crawling yesterday - eeek! Am going to put locks on all kitchen cupboards but keep one open for her to explore (as advised by my Great Aunt Sally ). We have an open plan kitchen/sitting/dining room where we spend the whole day so am going to try & make it as baby proof & baby friendly as possible.
Menu-wise she had chickpea curry & veg yesterday and today has chicken cooked with brown rice, mango & apple. She's had red meat once when DH defrosted a shepherds pie for her that I was keeping for when she's older. I've never smelt anything quite like the poo.....am seriously considering banning red meat till she's potty trained. Am a bit obsessinve about making everything organic.

nik72 · 24/11/2005 08:47

Oh, and she loves wholemeal pitta bread toasted and cut into strips as finger food. .

Hazellnut · 24/11/2005 09:22

hello all - couldn't get on here last night for some reason so I had to do things like 'talk' to people .

DD is 24 January so strictly am an imposter but as most of you know, she was a due in feb baby (10th) but she was dragged out early ! Which means she's 10 months today

As for kitchens, I do let dd in - most of our floor level doors are appliances so not too much for her to meddle with.

Food wise, dd yesterday had scrambled egg for lunch an tomato/courgette/cheese pasta. She loves red meat (mostly she's had things like shepherds pie and spag bog). A couple of you mention chick pea curry - how do you make this ? Sounds like a good one. I did a spinach dahl thing for her the other week which she loved.

It looks like dd might be going to her christening with a bit of a black eye she took a topple while trying to climb yesterday and whacked her eyebrow on a little chair of hers ! I said to dh that it will be a great story for her wedding if she does end up in pretty christening dress accessorised by black eye !

I had wondered where NIk was too - I thought she'd told her dh about the meet up and he'd locked her up so she couldn't go . What did he say Nik ?

I have wondered too about the stock cubes. Would be good to be able to use them and then could do more communal cooking IySWIM. Had thought I would wait till a year to use them but if people are using them......

LOL at your dh !! That's exactly the sort of thing mine would say. Although he takes the pi$$ I think he secretly thinks it nice !!

Good point on the stock - I hadn't actually read the label !! Hurrah ! off to buy some I think !

Aaaaaghh! Ds just threw up most spectacularly all over the carpet (and me, and himself) at dd's ballet lesson! And they were faffing about trying on clothes for their christmas show, and they had a photographer in. So there wasn't room to swing a cat, much less clean up after a vomiting baby. Then he screamed for 10 minutes and I realised his temp was going up. So I retrieved dd and we escaped. Dd didn't complain, bless her.

They're both parked in front of cbeebies now (1 dose of medised later).

And I am wearing my fourth lot of clothes today. They don't warn you about this before you get pg, do they?

fruitful · 24/11/2005 17:33

Tipex - the point is that all first-time mums do at least some of those things, thats why its funny.

[fruitful goes off to check the thread, to see how many of the things she is still doing with no.2 ]

nik72 · 24/11/2005 18:02

Oh, God ....Still haven't spoken to DH about the meet. He's out tonight and tomorrow night and working all weekend so feel like we're ships passing in the night at the moment.

Hope dd doesn't have too obvious a black eye on her christening Hazellnut! You could always try some concealer . DH managed to break my nose on our wedding night (we were Scottish country dancing at the time before you ask - eightsome reel!!) and I ended up with 2 black eyes. Not a wedding our friends have forgotten in a hurry!

First time mum thread rather amusing. Can't believe how neurotic I was, looking back - made everyone wash their hands before touching dd and yelled at DH once when he let her latch on to his nose (!) in case he had MRSA up it! I couldn't relax, couldn't let her out of my sight to the point of making myself ill. How things have changed!! Am more than happy to leave her at nursery and b*gger off to work these days.

Hazellnut · 24/11/2005 19:02

How funny Nik about your wedding day - mind you I guess it probably wasn't at the time !!

Tipex - I dispatched my mum to get some stock cubes whilst i was having a hair do and they say only a trace of sodium so hardly any at all... wish I bought them sooner !!

Fruitful, hope ds is feeling better

nik72 · 24/11/2005 19:38

There was blood EVERYWHERE!!! Luckily DH an A&E doc so managed to get the bleeding sorted without havin g to go to casualty in my wedding dress!!

oh nik!!

& i thought it was bad when the\drunken rellies took over the mic!!

would like to hear more abt the stock cubes here too, if they're kallo organic then we've tried those...v v low salt, like tipex said. can't see they could do harm really (hopefully!). but then roo's eaten quorn too which apparently isn't suitable until 1 or 2.

HN - is your hairdo for dd's christening?? what are you wearing, is it glam? & did you ever get your choc cake??

Hazellnut · 24/11/2005 20:19

the stock cubes are kallo organic low salt veg. They are in a blue box !

Hair do (well just had a few inches lobbed off to tidy it up !) is for christening and am just off in search of a white choccie cake recipe - ah the wonders of the internet. Outfit isn't as glam as I'd hoped. I bought an emergency dress to start with in case I couldn't find anything and haven't had chance to find anything better so a bit disappointed on that score so I did go and splash some birthay money (and a little bit more) on a posh bag so all is not lost !!! Right choc cake recipe......

nik72 · 24/11/2005 20:22

If you find a good cake recipe let me know, sounds yummy!

roosmum · 24/11/2005 20:44

dh makes a fab choc cake (not white tho), it's in one of jamie oliver's under 'party cake' iirc!
he uses the breadmaker to mix the dough up too, so that's a good tip maybe...
(his cakes are sooo much better than mine )

any chance of a pic of dd in her finery at christening??
