Debs75 I think newmum was just taking advantage of the sale. We bought one a few weeks ago because it was reduced. Orlaith is well over 9kg so heavy enough but not quite tall enough yet so it's just sitting in the supboard under the stairs at the moment. I have a M&P stage 0 car seat which I hate. It's really heavy and really upright so not good for sleeping in (I don't know how they can say it's suitable from birth), and her head's now reached the top of it. I've ended up having to buy a new stage 0 car seat until she's big enough for the stage 1 car seat. Angry I wish I'd got one of those stage 0-1 car seats then I wouldn't have all these problems and 3 car seats!

cinnamongreyhound · 10/05/2011 14:13

I put ds1 in a forward facing car seat as soon as he was 9 months Debs75 but he was 11Kg and his legs were bent all the time so I felt it was safer. The guidelines say 9Kg/9months but also when I read around lots of places said once they can sit unaided for 30minutes they are safe to be forward facing. I only bought 1 car seat for both boys Saoirse86, it can be rear facing and then can be turned around and used until 18Kg. I am the only mum I know who didn't have a car seat that you can carry around with you but I don't particularly like them and couldn't afford a travel system. Dh turned Luke's seat to forward facing yesterday as his legs are bent all the time when rear facing.

Unfortunately the salary is still less even with the saving in petrol cost bananacurry :(. Dh also gets overtime at work which we really need and my stepdads job doesn't have any.

I really love my little men!! They are both so gorgeous and just lovely boys, just wish I had more time with them before they grow up and leave me!

34w + 1/ 8 months on Friday Shock

Debs75 · 10/05/2011 14:52

I didn't realise Orlaith was so big! And Cinnamon DD2(31m) is only 15 kilos. With DD2 I never took her seat out of the car and I hated the ones you could pop onto a frame, with Lucy she has one that fits the frame and I sometimes push her around in the car seat. Not very often tho. It is the M&P one but I quite like it. Like I said she will have DD2's rear facing when she has outgrown this one but I have lots of time to save up for the kiddy pro.

We went to the park today and the weather was glorious, not like now. DD2 played on everything and Lucy had a couple of goes on a slide. We then had a nice lunch and went around the animal farm. DD2 is scared of peacocks but loves goats and chickens. About half an hour after we got in and it is freezing and blowing a gale

bananacurry · 10/05/2011 19:12

Ds1 wasn't forward facing till he was about 15 months old! He's only 12kilos now and he's 32 months! I think Olly will be a bit sooner but not much! His weight gain has really slowed down! I don't ever take the car seat out either. I found it much easier with both of them to carry a baby than a bulky car seat! We're on the lookout for a new one for ds1 ready for when Olly goes in his.

Cinnamon I know what you mean but my boys won't leave me!!!! I'm going to lock them away Grin

saoirse86 · 10/05/2011 19:22

Sounds like Orlaith's huge compared to others then! Blush I wonder if it's partly that she's not eating much yet so her weight gain doesn't seem to have slowed down at all.

We went to a soft play place today and Orlaith loved it with all th older children around. She's fascinated by other children. She is now managing to happily crawl over things that I would've thought were too high to crawl over, and she's pulling herself up on everything. She was holding onto a soft play thingy today and side-stepping along it. So cute but I'd quite like her to slow down a bit. She's growing up way too fast! Sad Her favourite toy at the moment is a camera case. She'll play with it for ages and wraps it around her while she goes off for a crawl so she can play with it when she gets wherever she's going to. Grin

newmum001 · 10/05/2011 20:20

i had a couple of reasons for getting the forward facing seat to be honest but we've also had to buy 2 rear facing ones as she out grew the first one in about 2 months and she's really scrunched up in the second one we've bought and she's over the 9kg's required for forward facing and can sit un-aided and is very sturday. The new seat is a 0-1 (from birth to 4 years) and can be rear facing but i didn't see the point so she is now a forward facing baby. Also she's been getting really sick in the car and i thought it might be a mixture of motion and not being able to see what was going on but she just threw up everywhere on the way back from asda and she was facing the front. Think i have a travel sick baby on my hands. Has anyone else had experience of this? I'm hoping once she gets used to being in the car it will calm down but any tips till we get to that point will be muchly appreciated!!

newmum001 · 10/05/2011 20:53

ARGH sometimes this site really pisses me off (not you lovely ladies) but i've posted something in chat about Grace's car sickness to see if anyone has any tips and so far i've recieved a lecture on why my baby (who non of them have ever seen) should still be rear facing and not forward facing! Aside from the sickness which to be honest would have gone un-noticed if my sister wasn't in the car as Grace never made a peep, aside from that she seemed to really enjoy being in the car, playing with her toys and smiling her little head off (even after projectile vomiting) and she's never been happy in a car before and i honestly think that was because she could see us. Anyway rant over but some know it alls really do annoy me!!

SeaChelles · 10/05/2011 21:21

Hi all, hope everyone is well.

Olly is doing fab. He's moving around all over the place and walking round on our fingers. Found him sat up playing in his cot this morning and then standing up holding on to the bars waiting for me to go and get him after his nap today. Grin He doesn't so much crawl, more crawl for a bit, then gets bored and sits back up, then literally throws himself in the general direction that he wants to go... Hmm He's also started clapping his hands when he gets excited.

We have two teeth with a third on the way. He is however one of these babies that gets a really bunged up snotty nose when a tooth is coming which is unfortunate...poor baby. Sad

Cinammon sorry about your DH's predicament. Sounds like he is best off out of there even if it does mean a wage cut. They don't sound very nice....

Newmum - don't worry about it - Olly has been in his forward facing car seat (which is a birth to 4 years one) for at least a month now. He is well over the weight requirement and his legs we're so squished up when it was rearward facing that it was majorly pissing him off! He much prefers being able to see me and where I am. Re the sickness - I would just give her some time to get used to it - after all she hasn't really been in a car that much before. I understand where you are coming from - I don't often post my own threads in the other chat sections as there is ALWAYS someone who is "holier than thou" and just wants to tell you that you're doing something wrong! You're doing great - don't let them upset you hun.

On the plus side I have a couple of interviews coming up - but job hunting is really starting to get to me now. I'm feel like I'm searching for a job that doesn't exist!

Olly 7.5 months...

newmum001 · 10/05/2011 21:47

Chelle i'm also on the hunt for a job Sad i keep switching from really wanting to work to feeling utterly devastated at the thought of leaving grace. Also worried as she doesn't self settle and is pretty much a pain in the arse with anyone if i'm not around. I know she'll get used to it but i'm not sure i will. Alas i have to work so shall keep looking around. Had a meeting with a solicitor today to sign some documents that my old boss sent re my contract ending so i am officially unemployed now which is a tad scary!

I know i shouldn't let it get to me just really bugs when you have a genuine issue and people jump on the one part of your post that you meant to be irrelevent and just a bit of back story if you know what i mean. She even gave me a link to have a look at and see all the ways i was endangering Grace's life by putting her in a forward facing seat.

Think we'll take her on ten minute trips at night and gradually build it up a bit and see how we get on (shall keep clean clothes, wipes and towels in the car just in case). Also going to a petting farm on Saturday as grace is in love with one of my mums dogs but insists on pulling his ears and tail which he doesn't seem to mind. So god help the poor animals at the farm. Think we'll set off when she's due a nap so she gets used to falling asleep in it too.

cinnamongreyhound · 11/05/2011 04:12

I had a look newmum001 and having them rearfacing being safest assumes a certain type of accident which may well be more common but is not the only way. I don't really get why people want to try to frighten you but perhaps she was genuinely trying to be helpful and is worried about Graces wellbeing? I think it was FriggFRIGG who was saying that in France children are rear facing until 4 when we had our meet up. I followed the advice I'd found when ds1 was small, which I guess was uk based. It does make you think looking at the video but there is no need for the veracity of her posts IMO. I have no ideas about car sickness, I get car sick if I try to do anything in the car or if I'm in the back!

Good luck on the job hunt for both of you!

newmum001 · 11/05/2011 08:59

I didn't even watch the video to be honest i would have got upset. I haven't got a problem with anyone offering advice and if someone knows better than i do then i am more than grateful for advice but she was so aggressive it was totally un called for. She is clearly a car seat nazi, her profile pics are all of her teenagers in rear facing car seats (obviously i'm being sarcastic but you catch my drift) she is obviously passionate about it and thats fine but she was so forceful with her argument that it immidiately makes you want to ignore it!

I get sick doing anything in the car aswell, can't read a book or even send a text message and grace has a load of dangly things to play with so maybe thats whats doing it.

saoirse86 · 11/05/2011 11:32

I just had a quick read of your thread newmum and I think she was a bit OTT. Like that other woman said, it's not like she's 5 months and weirdly tall.
A few weeks ago I started a thread asking if there were any other forward facing car seats that swivel apart from the expensive maxi cosi one. We were buying it for MIL as she struggles to get herself in and out of the car let alone Orlaith. It was for her birthday but we weren't intending for her to go in it quite yet and it would hardly be used really anyway. Well cue major flaming from about 4 women about how I was about to kill my child. I kept saying it wasn't going to be used yet etc etc but they wouldn't stop. I had said that she was already over 9kg and her head was at the top of her car seat so it wouldn't be too long before she'd be in it and then one woman kept going on about how I have to wait until she's 13 months. FWIW if I did she'd be able to turn round and have a chat with me she'd be so tall in it. Stupid bloody women. Angry
Also those links! Shock The one of the boy of 18 months who was in an accident in a forward facing seat is really not helpful. I'm sure you could find a story to show how anything is dangerous, I bet there have been children in rear facing car seats who would have been safer in a FF car seat in that certain accident due to where the car was hit. And anyway, who wouldn't put an 18 month old forward facing?! I bet she wouldn't/hasn't. Confused
The one Orlaith's been in is definitely too short for her. I still want a stage 0 one so I can take it out when she's asleep. The only one I could find that's a stage 0 and not too short is really reclined so it's great for sleeping but not great when she's awake. She's also only got about 1/2 an inch above her head in it. I'll keep using it till she's definitely too big because I know it's supposed to be the safest way but I really didn't need a lecture from those women. I'm not an idiot and I would never knowingly put my child in danger, and I am perfectly capable of making my own decisions. I should've told them I gave up BFing after a week, she still wakes in the night once or twice and she licks the dog's toys at any opportunity, I'm sure they could imparted some wisdom on those matters too! Wink

Rant over! Blush

newmum001 · 11/05/2011 13:19

Chelle you are hilarious!! We are clearly both trying to kill our children!!

Saoirse it is so unneccesary isn't it. It just puts you off posting again which surely isn't the aim of the website. If someone feels so strongly about something then by all means say something but don't ram it down peoples throats!!

Debs75 · 11/05/2011 13:56

Newmum On the subject of car-sickness there are a few reasons why we get car sick and how to deal with them. Unfortunatly they depend on the sufferer being of an age where you can trick the mind. For babies I think the best thing you can do is give them a view outside which may mean moving her seat into either the front or the middle seat.

Then it is a case of fiddling with things until you hopefully find something which works, window open, car cool or warm, even the noise level. On a practical level buy a couple of them poncho towels. DD2 is car sick sometimes and I drape the back of it over the seat put her in and strap her in then put the front over her head. If she is sick then most of it is caught on the towel not her. Car seat covers as well cut down on having to get your car washed every time she is sick. If she is projectile then do the seat in front.

On the rf v ff I am a firm believer in rf but you get the best seat you can afford which sits in your car and fits your child. I am lucky in that we have a big car and I could get a rf seat in.

Had Lucy's 8-12m check today and she is doing well, she is even ahead in some things like speeech, language and manipulative skills. Not so good on the posture but she has only just learnt to sit. She's 17lbs now so around the 25% line, she is only 68cm so still a tiddler

bananacurry · 11/05/2011 17:09

What a load of cp Newmum at least you're big enough to ignore her & fight back. That was really harsh especially as you're clearly a 1st time mum & if you chose to listen to her, you could quite possibly be putting Grace in more danger by putting her in a car seat that is the wrong size. Ooooh, people like that make me cross. Saoirse I've got a funny image in my head of Orlaith chatting to you like that baby on the andrex advert!

Got my boys weighed today. Olly is 18lb 8oz. Ds1 was 18lb 15oz at 1yr! Ds1 is 26lb 12oz at 32 months!

Newmum you know you're having problems with grace & lumps? Have you tried skipping the lumps stage & just give her soft food cut up thats not saucy? Ollys only a couple of weeks older & yesterday I tried him with his first proper "not mashed, puree'd squashed" meal & he managed it brilliantly. He had sausage, new potato, broccolli & cauli. Today he's had curry and a cheese sandwich (not together!). I'm so pleased cos I can now just put on a plate what we're having & he can have it for tea the next night. Soooooo much easier!

saoirse86 · 11/05/2011 18:39

Debs I've got a big car but the seat belts come from really far back so I've had to use car seat bases for the RF car seats or they won't fit in. The FF one only just fits in if the seat is as far back as possible. I can't understand why a car that's clearly designed as a family car is so impractical for baby car seats. They should definitely employ a mum to come and test the cars out before they go into production!

If I had a guess at Orlaith's weight from the centile she was on (because I haven't had her weighed for 3 months) she'd be about 20lb 8oz at 32 weeks 5days!!! Shock

We went to a stay & play group today that we haven't been to for a while and Orlaith just crawled off to go and steel things off play with the bigger children, leaving me behind. She didn't even look back at me for over an hour and shouted at me when I picked her up to leave, even though she was the only one left. She's probably going to love nursery if I ever sort it out. Grin

I'm so jealous impressed by what all your LO's are eating. Orlaith's still not fussed on food really but we're still trying her with lots of things.

newmum001 · 11/05/2011 19:33

I can't find grace's red book but i know last time we had her weighed she was 22lb something and that was about weeks ago.

I'm so glad you all agree that that woman was a bit out of order. I was so pissed off!

Banana will try her with more finger food i think, if i can figure out how to not cook with salt and still make edible meals. Grace is a bit of colour today so hasn't really eaten much at all so will try at weekend maybe.

beaditAli · 11/05/2011 19:57

If only it was more acceptable to swear at the know alls on MN...?! Grin
Really hope Grace's car sickness eases for you newmum

chelle you do make me chuckle! Grin

Can I fret about something on here to you all.....??
It's Daisy's christening on Saturday and as godmum I have to say some words along with the other godparents.... that's all fine but how do I stop my voice from sounding like it's usual Tinkerbelle on helium? Sad I get so nervous in these situations and want to enjoy it not stress. Any tips on nerves?? I think i've made the whole thing worse by fake tanning my legs TERRIBLY!!!! HEEEEEELP!
Sorry Sarah if you're lurking! Tho I doubt it tonight! Wink

Onto baby stuff.... newmum I cooked and sieved some pasta little stars today and mixed with a stage 2 veg pouch. He demolished it! Hopefully the pasta will help fill him up and stop the waking in the night.
Jack still crawling backwards but somehow finds his way to whatever he's set his sights on! He fell asleep last night in a crawling position with his bum way up in the air!
I'm absolutely loving 7 months! He's adorable and I want another! Shock

So girls. Whats your fave thing about being a mummy?????? I love the fact that sometime only I will do! and the gorgeous smiles I get when I walk back into the room. Like i've been away for days! Grin

patito · 12/05/2011 14:49

Hi all

Just popping in. Had a quick scan throu car seat chat. I had no idea on "baddness" of FF car seats. Ive been desperate to get Maia out of her RF as I also thinks she suffers from motion sickness and wondered if having her facing same direction would help. I haven´t done it as yet as she is way off the 9 kg. DS was in his well under a yr also, same reason and it helped loads.

beadit explain the sieving it pleasee, have tried to give Maia pasta but she just swallows it whole, do you mean just literally push through sieve?

beaditAli · 12/05/2011 17:24

Patito does she swallow it whole happily? I'm jealous if she does Envy
Yeah... literally get the back of a spoon and keep squishing as hard as you can. It all gathers underneath rather than dropping into the bowl beneath but it scrapes off and mushes up really easily with veggies etc. Jack still won't eat it without making a huge ordeal so sieve like a good en most nights! Grin It's definitely helping him unless it's coincidence that he's not woken sooooper early for more milk the past 3 nights.
Still no outfit for Saturday! Sad
It's official! NOBODY makes trousers in a 34" leg in Leeds Sad Angry
I could just wear an orange skirt and go as an ACTUAL Tango orange! Wink lucylooooooopyloo.....considering a name change to tangoedtinkerbelle does it make me sound like Katy Price tho??? Wink

OP posts:
bananacurry · 12/05/2011 19:22

oooh! yeah, name change. go on tink! I like it!

What a crap day! Well, started just under a year ago when I got my new kitchen. Long story short, its a fan oven but doesn't cook evenly. There's always a burnt edge at the back on pizzas, cakes, trays of chips etc. Its apparently been fixed once but its just as bad. This time we've taken photos & sent them. The stupid engineer is telling me its my fault for cooking things at too high a temperature! Surely if it was that the whole lot'd be burnt, not just a certain area! Crap bit part 1.

Crap bit part 2 someones backed into our car. luckily dh was in it when it happened so its all going through the insurance but its a hassle!

Crap bit part 3 Lincoln was gridlocked this afternoon so I couldn't get to my mum & dads for the evening! Rumour is that top gear was filming, but of 4 main routes through/round Lincoln, 1s shut for roadworks, 1s still open but is slow because of roadworks & 1 was shut for a stupid tv programme, leaving the last 1 to be jammed by people avoidin the other 3! ARGH!!!!

Rant over!

Ollys crawling. Well, more of a drag the legs crawl but he's off! you can tell in his face he's so pleased with himself! He looks so chuffed!

newmum001 · 12/05/2011 19:42

it possibly makes you sound like a child of katie price beadit!!

On the subject of waking in the night, are we all going through it again cause Grace hasn't slept through for weeks now and i'm exhausted!!! She's not even waking through hunger, we've tried feeding her on the nights she's been particularly hard to settle but she never seems to want it. I'll spare you all the details but last night was hell!!

I'm doing controlled crying starting monday, i hate hate hate the idea of it but i literally don't know what else to do, My back is fooked from rocking a 22lb baby to sleep and i think a big part of her waking and crying in the night is that she doesn't know how to settle back off when she does wake.
