Jodey, Arlo usually cries when we cone to the end of a bowl of food too. I give him pudding sometimes but he often still cries after that. Distraction works as well as more food usually, so I'm thinking it's greediness rather than hunger! He also often cries during finger foods, frustrated as he hasn't quite mastered how to get the bit left in his fist after he's eaten the rest into his mouth! I'm not doing so well on finger foods actually. We seem to be stuck on bread, rice cakes and those vegetable Wotsit type things - anything that does melt in the mouth scares me as he bit of two big chunks of carrot the other day and they were lodged in his throat while he cried, was convinced he was gonna choke. He ended up swallowing one whole. And he doesn't go for banana which I would have thought would be easy to gum. Do I just need to be brave or am I okay taking it slowly?

cinnamongreyhound · 07/05/2011 08:53

Was the carrot cooked Dixiebell? Luke has cucumber, pepper, pear and tomato raw, he loves roasted parsnip, I give him bits of meat, pasta shapes, cooked veg, dried fruit (apricots, prunes etc), the odd chip, fingers of pitta with houmous inside, probably others but can't think now.

saoirse86 · 07/05/2011 10:12

Well Orlaith's finally turned a corner with the food. She ate about 2 tablespoons worth of cooked veg yesterday. She normally eats maybe half a teaspoon so it was all a bit confusing! Confused Grin
My niece still hates food so I got her to watch and then fed her afterwards to see if she'd do it to copy Orlaith and she managed about a teaspoon, which is far more than normal for her too. [proud mummy/auntie emoticon]

We're supposed to be going on a picnic this afternoon for my friend's birthday but it's tipping it down. Sad I'd been looking forward to this all week. Did anyone else have huge thunder/lightning storms last night? I was sure Orlaith would be waking all through the night but she only woke twice, which is pretty good for her at the moment.

bananacurry · 07/05/2011 18:56

Dixie We're not going to well with finger foods either. Like Arlo, unless it melts on contact he's not interested. I gave him some toast today & he looked at it as if it was poison. He doesn't seem to grasp the fact that he has to pick it up & put it in his mouth. To be fair tho, today has been an off day for food anyway because........................................................... We finally have a tooth through!!!!!! Grin

Dixiebell · 08/05/2011 06:58

Carrot was cooked yes, cinnamon. so he should have been able to gum it to mush but ended up swallowing it whole while crying! Well done Luke on eating all that though. Arlo does love a bit of toast and fruit spread, but I guess I need to try and be a bit more adventurous.

mapletrees · 08/05/2011 11:20

Glad to hear your dh got through his hearing ok cinnamon. It's a shame his collegues have been so unsupportive, so often people wont stick their neck out Sad.

I can't remember if I already mentioned it, but Louis loves cheese on toast - not the healthiest snack, but if it gets him eating finger foods Grin. Also, I've bought some cashew butter, so I thought I might try him with that later....

I'm v excited today as my best mate is booked in for an induction tonight with her first baby Grin Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 08/05/2011 19:25

You mentioned that he'd tried and liked it mapletrees. I think Luke is tending towards being vegetarian! If meat is blended in he'll eat it and he'll gnaw on bits of meat but he always spits it out! Both ds1 and dss LOVE meat so it's a bit strange for me!

Have been having a clear out today, put all the very baby things away to be stored or possible childminding use later, bouncy chair, gym etc and put baby bath out for the bin. Feeling a bit :( but dh said keep it a bit longer so maybe there is hope?

Our snake has shed this week and seems to have become massive all of a sudden, looks like he needs a proper vivarium now. Hoping my mum remembers that she said she'd buy it when she bought the snake for dss Christmas 2009!!

One of my cm mums is fostering cats and has a very pregnant one at the moment, I took ds1 to see her today and she's gorgeous by with such a huge belly!! He said he wants a kitten, I told him 4 cats was enough so he replied but I want 5! Who knew his mental arithmetic was so good but 5 really is too many.

newmum001 · 08/05/2011 19:55

hi all, we're having a real problem with food here! Grace will still not eat anything even slightly lumpy or thick and i really don't know what to do. I know she'll do it in her own time etc but we've figured out the reason she's waking in the night (EVERY NIGHT) is hunger. She's had a 7oz bottle the last two nights running when she's woken up and she's drained it in 5 minutes flat! I obviously don't want to go back to night feeds but purreed veg (she's gone off meat) really isn't filling her up. She'll have a go at some finger foods but she'll nibble them and gets bored and chucks it on the floor so finger foods aren't going to be filling her up. Any ideas for very smooth but not thick foods for her! I'm going to try her with some toast in the morning. Might even get fruit bread and try that as it's more interesting. I need sleep god dammit, last night she was so worked up when she woke up that she was awake from 2.30 to 5am!!! To be fair DP gets up with her on Friday and Saturday but i can't sleep if i know she's up!

Cinnamon, thats really shit about your DH's job. Something similar happened with a girl i used to work with, some managers took a dislike to her and made it really difficult for her and eventually exaggerated something she did so they could sack her. She took them to a tribunal and a few of us were going to be witnesses but the director told us to not even thing about it unless we had hard evidence of their unfair treatment which of course we didn't so we culdn't do it in the end and she got a really mean pay out off them!

Hope everyone has had a lovely weekend Grin

Dixiebell · 08/05/2011 20:19

newmum, perhaps put something more carby with the veg, like baby rice? Carbs should be more slow release. Also what about adding cheese for protein, add when hot so it melts and doesn't make the puree lumpy. Arlo also seems to like breakfast best, so if I'm having trouble with food in the evening I often resort to porridge with fruit puree or mashed banana, which always goes down well.

Arlo had egg today for the first time - was a bit nervous after seeing the potential reaction (Jack, wasn't it?), but scrambled eggs went down v well with a bit of carrot mush for flavour. V.handy lunch option!

comixminx · 08/05/2011 20:28

Hi all, we got back safely yesterday from our long trip - Aphra held up really really well (and was adored by all and sundry). She has her first tooth just poking out! It's the bottom left one at the front but I'm pretty sure I can feel the bottom right front one coming too, and maybe even one of the top front ones. Yahoo!

She is slightly dehydrated despite our best efforts while we've been away - I've been feeding her good and regularly, and giving her sips of water too, which she's been pretty keen to accept. Yesterday on the way back she was less keen to accept water, or maybe just had a bit less bf or something, because just when we got to Heathrow (ironically) I thought her soft spot seemed a bit sunken, and it's stayed a bit sunken since then despite trying to get her to drink more water as well as bfing. All her other signs are good though - plenty of energy, cries tears if she cries, plump arms that spring back when pinched gently, nailbed goes red quickly after you squeeze it gently. Trying not to be nervous about it! Hopefully now we're back in a cooler climate it will all work out soon. Anyone else's LO suffered from dehydration at any point?

Cinnamon, also commiserating about your DH's job. Agree that it would probably be best longer-term to look for something else as well as tip-toeing as much as possible right now.

beaditAli · 08/05/2011 20:49

Just a quicky as am in desperate need for sleep.
newmum try sieving the stage 2 foods that are lumpier. It worked a treat for us when Jack wasn't keen on lumps and meant that he was still getting the contents like pasta which are more filling. There's hardly any waste when you sieve it all so a good trick I think.
Dixie so glad the egg went down safely Grin Still waiting for Jack's immunology tests so am not going near them again for a while...... a bummer really cos it would be such a quick one to cook up for him.

cinnamon also sorry about your dh's situation. Folk can be so shit sometimes!

FriggFrigg is busy playing with her new necklace I think so probably has forgotten us for now! Wink Wink

Wow...... not really quick but am definitely going for shut eye now! xxxxxx

Oh comix..... Jack was dehydrated when he had the (suspected) winter vom bug. His skin was very blotchy too. Drs recommended spooning or syringing water in and offering anything sweet like apple juice/water to be sure he was taking some fluid and some vitamin content from the apple rather than just offering water. We ignored the Dr that suggested flat Coke! Shock
He lived on 50/50 water/apple juice for about 36 hours then spent the next week filling back up as normal.

comixminx · 08/05/2011 21:42

Thanks beaditali - spoon it in, eh? Could try that! If her soft spot doesn't look much better tomorrow then I will do something like that, with some apple juice. She's peeing well, plenty of it and clear rather than dark coloured, and she's bfing reasonably as well as eating a bit of finger food - not masses but not any less than normal. So it's only really the fontannelle that has me worried...

mapletrees · 08/05/2011 22:00

Welcome back comix. I'm Envy at your exciting trip, and I'm sure Aphra will be fine - it's not so surprising that she was dehydrated when you got to Heathrow as flights are very dehydrating. If she's peeing light coloured wee well, she can't be too bad Smile.

newmum I tried Louis with cashew butter on toast today and it went down well. If Grace likes the toast tomorrow you could try her with some as it's high in calories and nutrients. Sorry you're having such bad nights atm.

Debs75 · 09/05/2011 09:02

beaditali the flat coke is a good tip as it has the right balance of salts and sugars that your body needs when it is dehydrated. My friend gave it to her 1 year old when he had d and v as he wouldn't take the dioralyte, he perked up fine.

Lucy is eating loads more food now and is on 3 meals a dayShock Not everything goes in but she attempts everything, she had chicked last night but that wasn't a favourite which is a surprise as we all love chicken.

Cinnamon Sorry about your dh's job position. DP got sacked from his in the end as he was 2 mins late clocking on. One of his bosses took a dislike to him and the fact he took time of for DS. He was glad to leave as the company was awful and luckily he found another job

comixminx · 09/05/2011 09:28

Debs, I've heard the flat coke tip before now too and I reckon it will contain plenty of salts and sugars as you say, but I wouldn't like the idea of giving it to quite a little baby. A one year old, maybe, or older, yes.

bananacurry · 09/05/2011 09:52

Flat coke also contains caffeine & god knows what else! Surely a bit of sugared water would be better?? It is good for dehydration but like Comix I wouldn't give it to a baby! I shouldn't worry about the soft spot. If thats the only sign then she won't be properly dehydrated. Ollys is often a but sunken but he's fine.

Ollys a bit off his food at the minute too. The only thing i can guarantee he'll eat is ratatouille! He's going to turn into a corgette! I'm hoping its his teeth. I just wish he'd clamp his mouth shut but he doesn't. He still takes the food then sprays it spectacularly all over the kitchen & me!

bananacurry · 09/05/2011 14:28

Ok! I would like to stand corrected! Flat coke is actually no good for dehydration. Caffiene is a diuretic so increases the risk of dehydration. It is however good for settling an upset stomach which is why Beady would've been advised to give it to Jack. Still wouldn't give it to a baby tho!

cinnamongreyhound · 09/05/2011 14:35

Sorry so many of you are having eating difficulties, Luke has gone from eating tiny amounts to eating loads and I have no idea what I have done so can't give you any tips I'm afraid.

Not sure how I feel about coke, I have only just started letting ds1 have it on special occasions at 4 but having said that if it's the only thing a baby will take I'd rather give coke than leave them dehydrated but I wouldn't have even thought to try it!

Just had a phone call from dh and he has heard the lady who he works with is retiring in October but has 7 weeks leave to take before then so he's pretty sure that's the only reason he has kept his job as they can't have 2 people with loads of knowledge leaving at the same time. He's now convinced that as soon as her replacement is settled they will be trying to get rid of him again :(. So annoying she's going now as he was hoping to apply for her job as it's a higher salary and an easier job but after this he obviously has no chance of getting it :( Angry but it does mean his job is safe for a while (in his opinion) and my step dad is retiring at Christmas and dh is hoping to get his job, similar job but on a smaller scale and a 10 min walk from home instead of 1hr car journey- just need to work out how to make up the difference in salary Confused. Would mean he'd be out of the house 8.20-4.40 instead of 7-6 as he is now and he could come home for lunch Grin

Gorgeous day here AGAIN and only 3 weeks until our holiday Grin

saoirse86 · 09/05/2011 16:43

Oh cinnamon it's not that good then. I can't imagine not knowing if/when I was going to lose my job. I've got it far too easy knowing my job's safe and DP can't sack me! Grin

banana I don't know anything about coke and babies, all I know is it's good for a hangover! Wink

Rubbish day here, mostly rain with a bit of sun. Luckily DP came home at lunchtime so I stole borrowed his car to go and meet my mum friends at the pub.

bananacurry · 09/05/2011 17:19

Lovely day here too! saoirse Didn't know it was good for a hangover, I just know its good for putting vodka/rum/JD in!!!!!!!! can't stand the stuff myself!

Cinnamon i think the Sept 10 curse has worked again! Ollys eaten really well today. His is down to his teeth! More crap news for your DH! Are you sure they really don't like him. If you remember me saying about DH and his saga, He thought the same but it turns out they were using him to set an example to the really crap workers that if they suspend him & almost sack him when he's the workshop geek then what would they do to the slackers! A very unfair way to be treated but thats his work!
Hopefully he'll get your Step-dads job and be away from it all anyway. You'll save a fortune just by the fact its so much closer!

newmum001 · 09/05/2011 19:51

Beadit the sieving tip worked a treat!! Had to add a bit of water aswell to make it slightly runnier and she didn't eat as much of it as she does the stage 1 but i think that was because she wasn't keen on the flavour!

Just ordered a forward facing car seat from kiddicare they've got a really good sale on if anyone else is looking. Ours should have been £80 but got it for £40.

comixminx · 09/05/2011 20:25

mapletrees, I took some inspiration from you and bought some cashew butter today - a success! I spread it onto an oatcake and she chewed away at it happily for ages. I'm sure quite a bit of the cashew must have gone in, though a fair amount of it will also have gone on her sleeves by the looks of it... Not so much success on the sipping water front - I've managed to choke her a few times but luckily she seems to bear me no ill-will. DP says we're waterboarding her, poor thing! Her soft spot is a bit better than it was and I'm much less worried now - thanks for the useful advice all.

MammyG · 09/05/2011 23:14

Hi all
Have to say am so lucky with Phoebe and eating. She is great at eating and eats a huge variety, I have to curtail the quantity incase she gets sick! Shes holding her own bottles and all now so also downing water. She made her first clear mammam sounds today! Was so chuffed! I know she doesnt mean me but the boys were older when they made m sounds. Her hair is gone mad too! Really wild on top and bald at the back. Anyway have to go to bed - wrecked. DS1 sick last night so up with him til after two then up early with Phoebe - not funny.
A woman is sitting at home with her husband and she says 'i love you'. He asks 'is that the wine talking?' She replies 'Its me ...talking to the wine!'
nite nite

Debs75 · 10/05/2011 09:07

Gosh Newmum that's early, DD2 was in her 0 stage until she was 15 months. Lucy will probably be the same as she is still dinky for almost 9 months and a good 4 pounds off the minimum weight for a stage 1. When she outgrows her 0 stage she will have DD2's rear facing stage 1 and DD2 will have a kiddy pro.

MammyG Lucy has started being sick after meals as well. I think it is greeiness as well as she always wants more boob after a meal. She's not keen on bottles but we need to get her having some water
