Well, some are here!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Laylasmum · 17/11/2005 22:16

Hi everyone thought i'd post on here at long last!!

Life's just so hectic now i'd forgotten how much hard work new boens can be, i seem to spend all my time bloody feeding!!
Rodeo, how old was Jess when you started the one formula bottle? Did she have a problem with then going back on the breast? Its just that Seth seems really hungry and he's also very sucky so he uses me as a dummy sometimes and i end up all sore!! Just thought that maybe formula might settle him a bit during the night. Havingaid that he is soooo windy!! Seems to be constantly bothered by gripey pains even when he's burped or farted loads anyone got any pearls of wisdom on what i can do to help him??

Anyway off to bed now, DH giving bottle of ebm at next feed ( if he'll take it) si i'll try and get some sleep!!

Just out of interest those who ar bottle feeding how much formula did your babies take at 2 weeks and how often??

karmamother · 17/11/2005 22:39

Laylasmum, the baby whisperer says that all babies have a need to suckle aside from their feeding. It's a self-soothing thing, apparently. She recommends using a dummy in the first few months. Might be better than chewed nipples. HTH

JenJam · 17/11/2005 23:33

hello everyone just a quickie - only just found this bit. cor it's full on being a mum! Finn is a little angel most of the time he sleeps loads -including an 8 hour stint overnight from 3a.m. until 11 a.m. - so I can't complain !!

Only thing is he screams his head off whenever I change or wash him (and in 10 days i've only given him two proper baths and a couple of very quick sponging downs. he really hates being exposed, wet or messed about with clean clothing. i've started to not look forward to changing him.

....and i think he's filled his nappy so best go,

goldenoldie · 18/11/2005 02:35

Good to have found you all again - thanks to CADS.

Twin 1 & 2 a week old today and still don't have names, seem to be going round in circles on this.

Boys are surprisingly easy at the moment, waking only to feed every 3/4 hrs during the day. Nights can be a bit more challenging but I'm working on helping them to differentiate between night and day.

Have got my double buggy now and am enjoying being stopped by people in the street asking if they are twins and cooing over them. Sure this will wear off when I am in a hurry, but at the moment it feels like celebrity status.

JenJam - my boys hate having exposed skin, being changed and bathed too - hope they get used to it, quickly...................

Layla - I'm combined feeding and my boys take about 1oz of formula (after emptying breasts) at each 3/4 hourly feed, but they are only a week old.

tex111 · 18/11/2005 10:51

A peaceful moment this morning so I thought I would try to post. We got a decent night's sleep last night so everyone is much happier today. We ended up with Toby and DH in the guest room and me and Rosie in our room. She wakes every three hours for a feed but generally goes right back to sleep so I'm feeling almost normal today.

Laylasmum, Rosie has about 3-4oz every 3-4 hours. She'll occasionally have 5oz but that's only if she's snacked at the last couple of feeds. Toby had about 2oz when he was two weeks old and I was combination feeding. We would give him one formula bottle before bed and it did settle him and let him sleep longer. As for the wind, Rosie has that too. I end up burping her during feeds, after feeds and in between feeds when she gets squirmy. Have you tried Infacol? It helps with wind and worked well with Tobes but doesn't seem to have much effect on Rosie. Good luck with it!

I've been known to use a dummy too. They're totally acceptable in Texas so I started out with one with Tobes and was surprised at all the tutting at my NCT class! It does help settle Rosie and I've learned that her tummy can hold about 4oz of formula. After that I give her a dummy otherwise she overeats and spits up everywhere. She seems to have her father's appetite and I think she would eat non-stop because the sucking comforts her. I'm going to give it six months and then start trying to get rid of the dummy. Too many other things to think about at the moment!

Goldenoldie, I don't think I've said congrats to you yet! Enjoy your celeb status!

BEKsmum · 18/11/2005 11:38

Morning all

Jenjam & Golden if your boys hate being stripped down for washes and baths have you tried getting one of the hooded towels and wrapping them in those and only exposing half of them at a time, then they won't get so cold. when bathing wrap then in the towel & do their hair first and then rub it dry before you put them in the bath which i normally make reasonably warm rather than the lukewarm that is suggested as Thomas finds this really relaxing rather than shocking.

Glad to hear that Thomas isn't the only windy one, he has thrown up everything i've given him this morning and is not gaining weight so would be interested in all opinions on combination feeding, i did't do this with ben as early as this so i'm a bit wary. However he will happily take a dummy so i'm hoping he will swap between breast and bottle if necessary.

Beartime i got another useful tip on the getting rid of the wind yesterday, the nurse at the hospital said to rub their tummies in a clockwise direction (as this is the way food travels through the bowel) and to gently push their legs into a squatting position as if on the toilet and the combination of the two will move any air trapped in the bowel. It seems to work on Thomas his bottom had plenty to say for itself last night

Right best go & get ben out of the bath now that Thomas has finally gone off to sleep in my arms. Beks

tex111 · 18/11/2005 13:12

BEKs, I do the same thing and get Rosie's bath nice and warm. She seems to enjoy it as long as I keep her as submerged as possible. I lay her towel out on top of another towel on the bathroom floor next to the radiator so she can stay as warm as possible through the undressing and redressing process and that seems to help too. Great tip about tummy rubbing too. Will definitely be trying that one today!

Diege · 18/11/2005 15:22

Phew! Dealing with sick toddler and snuffly baby at moment, so not much time to post. Nights a bit of a nightmare at moment, with toddler waking baby and vice versa, and starting to dread nightimes!! Libby is actually sleeping quite well - loosly following Gina times, Beartime, with me feeding her at 6.30pm, then waking at 10pm/11pm to feed (difficult that one!). She then wakes about 2/3am, and again 5/6, which is fine if it wasn't for the toddler night wanderings and tantrums just as we've both got back to sleep!! . I'm not too stict with timings at moment, as I find it impossible to keep newborn awake for too long after a feed, and remember wishing I'd made the most of these sleepy few weeks with other dds!Try to keep roughly to Gina times though, as she does seem a lot more content when following the routine, albeit roughly at this stage.
Nova - I had an epidural too, and I found it made for my best birth experinece yet! I felt in control, and able to push, without the pain/panic of previous births.
Hi Beksmum! Yes, so much for our shared birthday plans! You always said you would be the first. Am going to use the tips re: wind, as LIbs is a bit of a 'grunter' .Remember being told about tummy massage thing in baby massage class last time, and instructor saying that sometimes thimgs can get 'explosive'if they have a full bowel when circling, so watch out! Better out than in though .
Better go and appease toddler - calpol wearing off!
Diege.

tessasmum · 18/11/2005 16:49

quick one-handed post.
all well here. signed off by midwife yesterday and have been venturing out into the world a bit.
went for newborn hearing test today, anyone else had it? think they may only be trialing it in some areas. much better than waiting till 8 months though.

tessa still great with ash and not really bothered by the crying but giving us the runaround. lots of strops and a few full-blown tantrums. we are trying to be as consistant as possible. ie not putting up with behaviour we don't like but it is hard. its the wanting to go to the toilet, and having help doing it, as soon as ash latches on that is my bugbear at the moment!!

right, boobs required! bye

rodeo1 · 18/11/2005 21:13

How lovely to come on and have plentyof posts to read

We had the newborn hearing screening test while still in howspital, my SIL is one of the testers!

Laylasmum, Jess only took about 2oz from the bottle, so not much. But I've not been doing it the past few nights as my t*ts are like boulders when it's myturn to feed and is a bit painful! So only doing it now whenI'm really tired.

Having first night out with dp tomorrow starting to feel a bit babied out so it'll do me good! Also joined the infant school's PTA as well today

Joe's behaviour is loads better now, 6 weeks on thank goodness, back to his cheeky self rather than hell-boy!

Re bathing - Jess loves being naked!! And could spend all her hours in the bath! But then ds loves stripping off too,its a shame we're not naturists. I did see a tip on another thread though which suggested putting a warm wet flannel over babe's tummy while in the bath.

Golden - very impressed with you posting with twins. We bow down to your super woman competence!

Right, must go, sorry if this post seems a bit disjointed - must up my omega 3s!

So glad you've all found us anyway Have a good night everyone xx x

Is it naturists or naturalists? Wouldn't want to see David Bellamy nude anyhow

twinkle1 · 18/11/2005 21:21

hi all,
Tessasmum josh had his hearing test done in the hospital when he was 2 days old before we went home its standard procedure here now they no longer do 8-9 months tests and everyone else is been switched over to this as well. I remember ds been exactly the same when dd was born the min u started b/f it was " mummy i need a wee/drink/story etc" very frustrating but it did wear off after a couple of months
I wonder if we get anymore sleep tonight????? we went out for the first time today dh took me,josh and dd out for a meal, very nice.Mind you by the time i got home i was knackered!!!
well im going to go and watch children in need now, hope you all get lots of sleep

novadandypowder · 18/11/2005 23:02

wow, it's getting a bit busy on here now!

Been a busy bee over the last couple of days - met a friend for lunch yesterday (ended up eating one handed), and had gymboree today and ended up having coffee with a couple of the other mums. Then off to John Lewis where I got a xmas outfit for Natalie, although when I got home i realised I hadn't been charged for the cardigan - bonus!

According to the BW, Nat is showing all the symptoms of reflux, which would explain a lot of the crying, so we've changed her bottle teats to slow flow, and taken some of her other advice on board and it seems to be working.

Beartime - I've found Nat is really resisting nap times during the day, in the morning particularly. She's spending a lot more time awake now, and I don't think there's anything we can do about it. I've tried the 'scene seting' and the 'shush pat' but she won't go down, so I just carry her around with me. It's frustrating in the morning as it's really hard to get a shower and breakfast.

Rodeo - there's only 5 days between our two, but Jess seems to be gaining weight a bit quicker then Nat, although since we've changed bottle teats her eating is a bit better. However, due to the annoying situation with the HV I'll have to wait another couple of weeks before i can get her weighed again.

Nat has her hearing test in December. Anyone else having BCG and Hep B vaccines done? I've been told Nat should have them as we're based in London. It just means she's got jabs at 6wks, 8wks (other vaccines), and 10wks, poor thing.

Anyway - better get some sleep in as DH is doing the night shift, hurrah.

novadandypowder · 18/11/2005 23:11

forgot to ask - I think I got my period today, is that possible??? I stopped bleeding 2ish wks ago, and the bleeding that started today is quite light, and periody in colour (not reddy like locia). I'm not breast feeding, so could it come this soon?

KristinaM · 19/11/2005 07:15

Good morning ladies, just popping in from the antenatal thread to say Hi. Very impressed that you and your babies are doing so well. i am now 39+4 and not a single sign of imminent labour, so expect to here the last left on the "due in Noevember " thread!

DS1 has been up through the night - teething I think although he is full of the cold, as most toddlers are i think at this time of year.

I have enjoyed lurking here on your post natal thread as it brings back memories of 18 montsh ago when Ds was tiny. Its just so much work, isnt it, to get through each day and get everyone fed , dressed and changed. Let alone do some washing, prepare a meal or write some "thank you" notes. Respect and lots of sleep to you all!!!!

Londoner · 19/11/2005 12:22

Hi everyone,

Sorry to be such a 'bitty' poster, every day just flies past and then evenings are my busiest time of all.
@ badly behaved older siblings...... I think you just do the best you can at the time, no looking back & feeling bad, and the phase you're going through will pass, you will survive it!.......... that's how I always manage anyhow...... although I do of course always feel guilty & often look back and cringe....but I do remind myself that, at the time, I did my best.
@ immunisations/hearing tests - Elizabeth had the hearing test, done by midwife at our house before being signed off...... but I turned down the offer of the BCG jab, wasn't ready for that........ my eldest son had it last year at secondary school but I now understand they're not offering it in most schools now...... but I think I'll take all my other kids to be immunised with it at about 12 years old, that way they all have the same thing..... I don't know, these goal post always moving really throws me........

Hope everyone is well, glad that BW advice seems to be working for you nova, must be v.hard having a reflux baby.

Londoner · 19/11/2005 13:29

Our lovely rabbit Ash who's 5 1/2 is on his way out today . He really has been the most amazing rabbit that ever lived a real personality. So we've all been in floods of tears saying out goodbyes this morning, and he's now sleeping, I think he'll just drift off soon, in a box of comfy fresh hay in the kitchen... have left the oven on so it's nice & warm in there and we all keep checking on him or spending time with him. It's really sad, we shall miss him. He lived in a hutch in our garden but we let him have free run of the garden each day playing with the kids, nibbling grass and flowers/shrubs and he's been great friends with our two cats (in mating season perhaps a little too friendly ), I think he really believed he was a cat at times, he even chased away other cats & squirrels too! The cats, esp. our girl cat Roxy would mother him and hold him down to clean him all over and could often be found sleeping in the hutch with him, so cuute. I feel he's had a really fantastic life though and it seems v. natural to say good bye to him in such a peaceful way after such a happy life.

Hope you don't mind my ramblings, circle of life etc.

rodeo1 · 19/11/2005 17:23

Oh Londoner. How sad Hope he has passed away peacefully by now....on a happier note, read your great birth story - you should post it on the birth announcement section so everyone can read it (and then you get loads more messages about how great you are - it really is a pick up! )

Nova, will have to get BW - it's making me curious when I read about 'the shush pat' and the 'touchy' baby etc! I think if I remember rightly breast fed babies put on weight quicker in the early weeks and then slow down, whereas bottle babes put it on at more of a constant. I know my 2's weight looked like it was dropping off at about 3-4 months but I think that's just the way it goes. Also forgot to say before about how crap you and Natalie are being treated by your health care (non) providers. Is there anyone you can write to? Really shocking...

Right I'm going out later so better make a start on the kid's tea, I'll do a quck baby update first

Thanks for the update Rodeo, there are so many of us now .

I can't be the only one in the situation with the HV's as not everyone around here belongs to the same doctors surgery. Not sure if complaining will get me anywhere...

Found that Nat loves to sleep sitting up during the day, so we prop her up on the armchair with cushions and she's away. Has slept for nearly all her alloted nap times today, although she grumped when my friend came over as she was wearing very strong perfume.

novadandypowder · 19/11/2005 19:59

oh and Londoner, so sad about your rabbit

tex111 · 20/11/2005 10:43

Nova, I started my period on Wednesday! I was surprised it came back so quickly but I'm not breastfeeding either. I did speak to the midwife and she assured me that this is normal. I breastfed a bit longer with Toby so it really surprised me this time though when I think about it I did start again about ten days after I stopped breastfeeding. Same this time.

Londoner · 20/11/2005 13:51

Hi guys!

Thanks for your comments about my birth story rodeo, I was so relieved to get such positive feedback as I felt v.nervous sharing such intimate stuff, I don't know about putting it on the main section tho it sonds v.tempting....maybe when I'm on a low ebb 1 day.
Thanks nova & rodeo for your kind sympathies re my rabbit.......he passed away peacefully in the evening & the children covered him in flowers...v.sweet.

twinkle1 · 20/11/2005 15:11
