OK, that cheered me up! Back to mopping brows and bottoms now.

hello mrs D. he is doing quite nicely thank you! pain under control and he had a walk out on tuesday. sleeping like a baby he is, apparently. like yours by the sound of it

my better half is out tonight (rare, now i think of it) and i am toddling around the house aimlessly and soooo enjoyably. tried watching a surfer movie on cable, but it was so lame i couldn't even be bothered to laugh at it! getting weary now anyway...see you soon xx

Eulalia · 09/12/2005 16:58

Glad to hear your dad is getting better MB.

Well I guess I'll probably be the last to start solids as I think my ds is the youngest here.

By the way got him checked again and his weight is doing OK - he's still on the 9th centile but not dropped so guess he's just a little chap.

He's 13lbs 11oz (19 weeks today)

webwoman05 · 09/12/2005 17:12

Hi ladies, babies and Hub!

Hope you are all well. Been very busy recently and not much time for mumsnet

Saying that I haven't done much shopping for christmas as yet. Will try and get some things next wednesday as my Mum has offered to look after the boys in the afternoon.

Harry is a delight and thankfully sleeps through the night and generally is a thoroughly chilled baby. He has his grumpy moments - normally when he is hungry or if we are eating. Not going to start weaning until absolutely necessary as the breastfeeding still going well. If Harry starts waking in the night I'll consider it earlier. Being a bit thick here but what is the recommended start date for weaning in weeks? I know the recommendation is 6 months.

He has just started to roll onto his front so he is truly delighted with his new skill although still a bit surprised how he got there! He is also the phanthom raspberry blower!

Merryberry: Glad to hear that Big Vin is doing OK.

Love to all. Happy shopping!

xxx

merrybelly · 09/12/2005 18:59

26 weeks is the recommendation. thanks for the good wishes. i was set on getting lil vin to 6 months, forgetting this is an average until his clear hungry signals got through to me.

he has eaten an unexpected amount today - and my word he is shiny happy baby as a result. it's amazing. i'm looking forward to tomorrow and feeding him again

is this disjointed? i am half way down a glass of wine, pished as larry already, not drinking at all often. we have the dvd of alexander, picked up in a moment of overt irony. we're suffering now. it is dangly boy bits rubbish!

Eulalia · 12/12/2005 13:59

Just had the social work visit and yes we are entitled to support... feel a bit emotional about all this. Part of me feels like I've come to a point where I have to accept I can't cope with the situation but then when I stand back would anyone be able to cope with autistic 6 year old, v lively 3 year old and 4 month old baby without help??!! So no its not down to my 'failure' at all.

I know I need this as been getting more exhausted with ds whose behaving is getting more challenging and the house is a tip, I never have time to do proper housework as I can't catch up at the weekends. I have to take them all out and it often involves a 50 mile round trip to meet my sister so she can help out. At least now I can access more local help and get more childminding... she's coming back next week to meet ds1.

Must dash as I want to try and get a shower before he comes home from school.

Hope everyone is well - busy with Christmas preps I suppose.

mrsdarcy · 12/12/2005 14:29

hope you're ok Eulalia. Don't beat yourself up - you always sound as though you cope extremely well [smile. v glad you are going to get some help

I took dd to have blood tests today. She was great but they gave me a "brave girl" sticker as I cried . We also needed to give a urine sample. Getting a sample from a 5-month old baby is certainly interesting!

Eulalia · 13/12/2005 15:01

oh your poor dd MrsD! but I know what you mean you feel it more yourself. my ds1 had to get blood taken as a newborn, I hated it.

feeling much better today. Off shopping now with the two ds's. dd at childminder. much easier when she's not around. poor thing I just hope she doesn't develop 'middle child syndrome'.

Belo · 13/12/2005 15:08

Eulalia, I always think you sound like you cope fantastically. You're sound brilliantly organised. If help is available, however well you're coping, you might as well take it.

MB, glad to hear about Vin.

Dd2 has the worlds's sorest bottom. She's had a really yucky cough/ear infection/cold thing and has been on anti-biotics. She hasn't been feeding much and now has the yuckiest bottom I've ever seen. She's got weeping sores on it. We've tried loads of different creams, have been changing nappies every hour and having lots of bare bottom time. I saw the HV this a.m. and she suggested putting a nappy liner inside her disosable. If anybody else has any tips for poorly bums I would be very grateful...

Apart from dd2 being poorly, we haven't been up to much. We went to a Surestart Xmas party last week which was brilliant. dd1 was the most excited little girl there. She ran 'round frantically telling people that it was Christmas and that Father Christmas would be coming soon. They had a magician, a puppet show, arts and crafts and music. That's about as exciting as it gets for us at the moment.

Hope all of you are managinag to get to some Xmas parties.

Belo · 13/12/2005 15:10

MrsD, forgot to put - how did you get the urine? I'm intrigued. Hope all is well with you and dd.

mrsdarcy · 13/12/2005 17:06

The tests are just part of the ultra-thorough approach they are taking with DD. It's all a bit of a drag but I keep reminding myself that lots of the parents at the hospital would give their eye teeth to be in my shoes.

Collecting the urine sample - they stick a little plastic bag over her bits, then put her nappy back on top (for leaks) and just wait! It didn't cause her any problems but apparently if they have to take the bag off before the baby has got it all soggy, it can be quite painful for them. DD was really fine about the whole thing though. Head measurement today - also fine. We are using up so many NHS resources, and I'm sure it's quite unnecessary.

On another note - my hair has started falling out which usually happens to me when pregnant so I guess my hormones are having another mad change around. Or else I'm pregnant (it's the time of year for thinking of immaculate conceptions, after all )

hub2dee · 13/12/2005 17:13

pmsl mrsd. Just to say I'm off for a long while (working holiday), I'll be checking often, but not as much as when I'm on an Internet IV drip, LOL. Season's greetings to you all. X

merrybelly · 13/12/2005 18:41

happy hanukah don't get sunburnt give camille a kiss from me and please may i have some punctuation for christmas

merrybelly · 13/12/2005 18:44

oh belo that sounds so sore, poor child. i can't think of anything useful except remebering back to nursing, we would always irrigate the sores with plain water when cleaning. also try and keep off bottom lots - is more tummy time an option? is the problem an allergy to cotton, corn starch or maybe a chemical in a nappy?

xfx

Belo · 13/12/2005 20:13

HV thinks rash is a combination of dd2 being on anti-biotics, not feeding much as she's been unwell and the fact that she's teething. She'll do tummy time for 5 mins at the time, but not much longer. Dh is dancing around with a tea-cosy on his head trying to cheer her up at the moment. She's giving him pittying, embarrassed looks!

MrsD, I'm losing my hair as well. I mentioned it to my hairdresser today and she said that most people loose hair at this time a year, she said coupled with having recently had a baby it can sometimes be a bit dramatic. She told me not to worry though. So, I'm now worring a little bit less.

I want to learn to spell for christmas.

mrsdarcy · 13/12/2005 21:35

Poor DD2, Belo. Have you tried metanium? It's the only thing I've ever found to be any good.
LOL at your DH. It's a seminal moment, when you realise your DH has finally turned into Embarrassing Dad .

I haven't had my hair cut since before DD was born so I can't really expect it to look anything other than seriously skanky. Maybe a haircut would be an idea.

Where are you on holiday, Hub?

hub2dee · 13/12/2005 21:45

California.

Hope to meet up with user SofiaAmes (she lives in LA) !

Would you like me to bring a cup of sunshine back for you ?

mrsdarcy · 13/12/2005 22:11

Very , Bub! Hope you have fun. How long are you going to be there? Whereabouts are you?

hub2dee · 14/12/2005 04:56

Ages. And ages. Los Angeles / San Diego / maybe Las Vegas. Hope it doesn't 'drag on' and feel 'too long away' IYSWIM. We can always bring return flights forward if that happens. Our babies will see so many changes in 7 weeks.

mrsdarcy · 14/12/2005 09:40

didn't mean to call you Bub, by the way . That darned 1-handed typing!

Belo · 14/12/2005 13:02

Metanium is what hv told us to use. Perhaps dd2's bum is looking a little bit better today.

at Hubs holiday.

Bagpussinboots · 14/12/2005 13:21

Hi all, just a quick catch up whilst ds2 is under the baby gym from hell and dd is asleep.

Hub, hope you and your family all have a fantastic time . I'm not one bit jealous honestly .

Belo, have you tried egg white on dd2's bottom. It apparently helps nappy rash although I haven't tried it, also camomile tea (cooled) is supposed to be a good healer. Other things I can think of are Weleda nappy cream and also Bepanthen (we use this) although they are both quite gentle and may not be strong enough depending on the rash. dd used to get horrid sores where she was allergic to the elastic in disposable nappies (which is the reason ds2 is now in cloth) and I never found much to completely kick it in to touch to be honest.

I have had a hair cut and now there is less of my hair than ever. Not sure when it will stop but I miss my thick head of hair a lot .

Mrsd, glad everything is ok with dd - must have been horrid to watch . ds1 had his last lot of blood taken ages ago but I was 20 weeks pg with dd and he was 17 months old and I vividly remember having to restrain him whilst the doctor fitted a cannula and took what seemed like litres of blood at the time. Fortunately he hasn't held it against me.

Eulalia, glad you are getting some help with things - it must be a relief for you .

Right, a quick q now. What can I do with ds2 when he grows out of his bouncy chair. He is nearly at the max weight limit for it and it looks suddenly rather flimsy - Bumbo is no good if he is tired as there is no neck support. Other two children had the use of a high/low chair, but that is too big for both our kitchen table and our living room so I am getting rid. Need something to replace it - any ideas?

Belo · 14/12/2005 13:53

Ikea do a fantastic high chair which I think it's only £14. Its very narrow so doesn't take up a lot of space and babies can sit in it unaided from very early. Dd2 went into one in a restaurant about a month ago. You can get it with our without a table and added cushions. I want one, but that would be involve me admitting to dh that the expensive wooden one I wanted us to have was a mistake . That's my recommendation bagpuss.

Thanks for the nappy rash tips. I've got some chamomile tea so I'll try that now. Just about to do some bum washing!

Bagpussinboots · 14/12/2005 14:32

Belo, thanks for that, my mum has the Ikea one in her kitchen and it has been used for both the other two and still looks like new. We have something for our new kitchen table sorted (well, sort of). We will either get a Tripp Trapp or buy a fifth dining chair and put our handysitt on it thus ensuring that we have something suitable until a baby chair is no longer needed. I was really after something for him to sit on in the living room. ds1 and dd both used the same bouncy chair but never exceeded the weight limit on it before they could sit up/crawl etc, but ds2 is such a porker that I will need to remove him from the chair pretty soon. What do you think of the Bumbo? I thought it was such a good idea but dh and I now think that it looks really uncomfortable. Hope the tea works .

Belo · 14/12/2005 16:08

We like the bumbo. dd2 likes to be upright at all times so its great for her. We've also got one of those baby walker things which dds sits in. Her legs don't touch the ground, but the tray around it is good for all of her toys.

Bum is looking worse again. Now both sides are bleeding.....

mrsdarcy · 14/12/2005 19:33

Poor DD, Belo. Is she still on antibiotics?

Bagpuss, we have a hideous Graco swing that has done sterling service for the boys as well as for DD. It takes up quite a bit of room, and is very ugly, but the backrest is adjustable and the swinging motion either soothes them to sleep, or stops them getting too bored.

DS1 and DS2 did their Christmas plays today and I was pretty weepy! They were very sweet. DS1 was Santa and DS2 was an innkeeper. And DD is going to be Baby Jesus on Sunday at the church nativity play!

I got a Christmas card today from a cousin whose goddaughter was killed in the July 7 bombs . I met her a couple of times, but hadn't made the connection when I saw the lists of victims. I didn't know her, really, but I'm so sad about it. She was only 29. Her poor family.
