Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
newmum001 · 30/03/2011 21:44

I know i should cinnamon but it's so scary, i'm being a wimp but she's so sick that it comes out of her nose. DP's auntie said something about bicci pegs (sp) for her teething. I know you use them are they actually biscuits? Cause i was thinking they might kill two birds with one stone (help her teeth and get her used to finger foods) i've mixed up some carrot and suede and some cauliflower so i'm gonna give her that with some kind of whizzed up meat but i've left them a little bit chunkier than other things she's had so i'll see how she gets on with that as well.

newmum001 · 30/03/2011 21:46

Yay for Luke sitting up. He looks so pleased with himself on your photo!

cinnamongreyhound · 30/03/2011 21:54

Bickie pegs are really hard, basically wholemeal flour with water, they don't break up just turn slimy. Luke loves to chew them and they have a string so they can't lose them!

JodeyBogeyPicker · 31/03/2011 08:54

Newmum so your HV was a total bitch. I know they have to do their job but part of their training should be on listening to moms and offering advice rather than talking at them when they don't even know the baby well enough. I have been really lucky in one sense as my HV's are really friendly and easy to talk to. I was always concerned about H weight gain as he is in the middle of 91-98th centile. He waas born on the 50th and moved quickly onto the 75th. He then had a massive jump up to the top of the 91st just before weaning and I was scared I was over feeding him but he was always hungry and guzzled an 8oz bottled and cried for more. I was really nervous when getting him weighed last week as he loves his solids and had only dropped one 10pm feed due to sleeping through. I was sure he was going to be off scale but he had stayed on the 91st. cinnamon good to hear your DS1 was a big baby and is now a perfect little bot who eats well. My nephew is a really fussy eater and I really don't want H to be like that. Also, good for Luke sitting up so well. Lovely isn't it to see them sitting but at the same time, I feel they are growing up too quickly.

Right, this next question is for the sling lovers/experts out there. I'm going on holiday to Cornwall in May and want a sling that I can wear H on the front and the back. I want it to be comfortable and to distribute his heavy weight well without breaking my back or hurting his shoulders. Any suggestions????

lumpybananapuree · 31/03/2011 08:57

Newmum I've had a lot of success with whizzed up spag bol. Its ends up grainy rather than lumpy & i've mixed in som baby pasta (heinz) its so small and slimey that mixed with the rest she might not nitice it? (hopefull emoticon)

saoirse86 · 31/03/2011 10:56

newmum I can't believe what your HV's been saying! Shock I've only met my HV once but there's a HV who ran the post-natal group who's lovely. She's always reassured all of us about everything. I had been worried about Orlaith's weight and she has a really big tummy! This HV has told me not to worry, she looks fine so she is fine. The same with my niece being small.
I personally don't think you should worry too much about Grace's eating. If you'd weaned at 6 months she wouldn't be eating much lumpy stuff yet anyway so surely it doesn't matter as long as she's taking those things in the next 2 or 3 months. I'm certainly no expert when it comes to weaning, but Orlaith doesn't do well with mush so I give her finger foods mainly. I think she likes being in control of what goes in her mouth. Maybe you could try giving puree to get food in her, then soft finger foods to get her used to solid things in her mouth.

Jodey I have a moby wrap (the one that's just a big long piece of fabric) and I wouldn't use that. It's really hard getting them on your back and I think you have to gradually get used to the weight of the baby. My sister finds it really uncomfortable having Orlaith in it but finds it ok with her own DD. Probably and ergo or patapum would be best.

Orlaith's definitely ill. She's been refusing to take her last bottle at night for about 10 days. She had nothing during the night then this morning she took a lot of persuading to take 4oz, then threw up everywhere . It seemed like far more than she'd just drunk! Confused Sad

SeaChelles · 31/03/2011 12:02

Saoirse - sorry Orlaith is poorly - maybe she has the bug that has been going round - perhaps nip to the doctors? Sad Hope she feels better soon. Olly sends hugggggsssss! and bounces!

Well just had Olly weighed and he is now 20lb 5oz at 27 weeks. He is still on the 75th percentile which he has been since birth. Grin

Another HV talking out of her rear end here! Apparently I am to stop giving Oliver pureed food immediately and start giving him sandwiches....WTF?! First his food isn't really "pureed" anymore - its lumpy mush. And second - "Sorry Olly, no more nice food - but here's a buttie! Try and eat that son! Good luck!" He has all sorts of finger foods - but apparently if I dont start giving him sandwiches to chew his speech will be delayed..... Hmm Angry

And also Olly currently has about 28oz milk a day which is spread over 5 bottles (which I know might be a lot - but this is the baby that was downing 7oz bottles at 2 weeks old!) He doesn't feed in the night anymore and I'm currently trying to slowly cut down his bottles in the mid-morn and afternoon - but oh no he should only be having three bottles a day now and I'm to stop giving him the other 2 bottles. Cold turkey. I suppose thats one new way to piss him off and make him grumpier!

They just really dont seem to understand the practicalities of day to day parenting - or is that just me?! And its not as if his weight is off or anything - same line since birth! I just dont get it.

Maybe I need a kinder bueno to calm me down newmum!

Debs75 · 31/03/2011 12:20

Jodey I use a wilkinet with Lucy and you can use that on your back. I haven't tried it that way yet but it is one of the comfiest slings I have had. I also use a sleepywrap which is less structured and just as comfy, again I haven't put her on my back as I can't get my head around it. They show you on You Tube and it does look easy but I 'm not flexible enough, maybe with someone helping you.

Newmum Sorry you HV is a bitch. When I had DD1(15 years ago) they never bothered that she was off the charts they liked a big baby, how the times have changed, they are petrified we will grow obese children. Personall;y I would give her large sticks of food and let her be in control of getting it to her mouth, that way she is less likely to choke and be sick, she will still gag but they need to learn that.

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2011 14:30

Luke doesn't like spag bol lumpybananapuree :(

I have a kari me sling which is one piece of material JodeyBogeyPicker and I have no probs carrying Luke around in it, he was 19lb 4 last week.

I wonder if the charts are different SeaChelles because Luke was 19lb 4/8.7Kg at 27 weeks and just above 75th centile Hmm. I was a bit worried that Luke was still taking a lot of milk, not for the immediate future but I didn't want him to be having a lot of milk in a few months time, the HV just recommended I cut his feeds by a few minutes. I have decided that as he has just started sleeping through he has dropped a milk feed anyway so I don't want to do anymore. They are there to advise and you can choose to listen or ignore them, I agree that she has some funny ideas about the sandwiches a good friend of mine was told to give her daughter baked beans and scrambled egg as she wasn't gaining weigh quickly enough!! Why not just say she needs foods higher in calories or a bit more food, rather than baked beans and scrambled egg ( especially considering the amount of salt and suger in baked beans!).

Wishing Orlaith well Saoirse86.

Dh had his disciplinary today, his union rep said he'd done well but they are not seeing everyone else involved until next week and then the findings go back to the head of department for him to make a decision, so seems it will drag on a bit longer :(

patito · 31/03/2011 14:47

HI all

Been cathcing up over the last couple of days and have forgotten who said what, so will just ramble on in general.

I haven´t been on as DS is being a nightmare, yes terrible 2´s exist what they don´t tell you is that they start ay 18 mths and get worse at 3! Im wondering if it´s a bit of delayed reaction to Maia. Im so exhausted mentally dealing with him, was in tears yesterday just down to lack of sleep and coping with DS´s throwing/smacking/spitting the list goes on. Its seems to come on randomly and snaps from really happy and playing to demon child Confused.

Having said that it was his birthday last Friday and we had a lovely weekend, we got him a bike and he loved it so went out for a bike ride and picnic on sat with some friends. Maia ate the grass Hmm

Saorise Hope Orlaiths feeling better, doesn´t sound good.

shelle Olly sounds so funny, love the imagine of bouncing. Maia is of crawling everywhere but still doesn´t sit. Found her chewing the telephone wires this morning Shock. DS has always loved his willy, and 3 yrs on the fascination is still there!! I´ve just left him to it, I don´t want to install feelings of shame etc when there so young, to be fair he also loves playing with his feet/arms etc, they just dont know a willy is a willy ifswim. They do pull on it really hard though, and it doesn´t seem to hurt Hmm

jodey I have
this and couldn´t recommend it enough. I used it loads with DS and now wear it every day with Maia. It is comfy, has a big belt that takes the weight, is well designed for the baby and is easily adapted for another person. DP also wears it loads and no faffing to adjust straps. I bought my sister one as i was so impressed. Also have this for when its colder to snuggle under.

JodeyBogeyPicker · 31/03/2011 15:33

Thanks for the advice ladies. Patio, that MAM carrier cover looks really snuggly. I think I'm going to try and bid on a second hand Ergo from ebay as they are quite expensive to buy new (unless I can convince the hubby we NEED one), hate being on maternity pay!! Boo!

lumpybananapuree · 31/03/2011 15:53

Well we've had a lovely day catching up with my oldest friend and hes dd & ds. They're similar ages to my 2 so it was really nice. It has however made me very pleased that ollys not bothered about moving. her ds (5 weeks older) was rolling & commando crawling everywhere! It was exhausting just watching him!

Chelle Yet another example of a wonderful hv you've got there! I shouldn't worry about eating/drinking too much. They take what they want & as soon as they're more mobile it evens out anyway!

I think I might have a word with our hv about Ollys legs! He really doesn't take any weight & I'm not sure how to tell if its cos he can't or won't! I know she'll just brush it off & tell me they all develop differently! I don't like her but don't know where else to go!

Jodey I have a moby & a mei tai. They're both great for back & front carrying once you get the hang of tying it. Its really hard on your own but if there's someone to help its pretty easy.

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2011 16:41

Go to gp if your hv is rubbish lumpybananapuree, my friend has just been with her dd as she keeps falling over and she's 2 1/2 they were really helpful and took it seriously.

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2011 16:43

Bugger pressed wrong button!! Sorry to hear about your ds patito, my ds1 has been testing but never really horrible. One of my minded little boys was really trying at some point and he has grown out of it.

One of my minded children was very sick in my living room today so now we wait to see who will catch the bug :(

JodeyBogeyPicker · 31/03/2011 17:02

YES!!!! As suspected, I can see a wee white tooth coming through Harlyn's gum (top right). No wonder he has been more grumpy. Nelsons and calpol here we go! He wasn't too bad when the first two came through but my sister said her LO suffered more with his top front two. Are these ones more painful or just the same as all the others. I've just put him down for another nap to make dinner and bedtime routine happier. Fingers crossed he will just have one of his usual half hour cat naps and not longer or I may struggle to get him off to bed at 7.

Cinnamon, there are loads of bugs going around at the mo isn't there. Better get lopads of vit C down your necks. Fingers crossed you will all be ok.
Saoirse, hope Orlaith is better soon. Its so horrible and worrying when the LO's are not well.
maple hope Louis was happy in his own room last night.
patio I haven't got any otbher kidies myself but my sister told me that the 3's were worse than the 2's. Something we all have to look forward to. I had better start watching supernanny now and making notes! lol!

My friend (who has two teenage boys) told me about a book that explains all about what changes and stages boys go through up until the teenage years. She said it was very helpful as a mother to try and understand the hormonal changes in her boys. Although it doesn't give you strategies to deal with them it just explains why they can behave the way they do. I'll try and find out what it is called as she reckons it was a great read for any mother of boys.

Debs75 · 31/03/2011 18:15

Lucy has just rolled overShockGrinGrin
She almost went all the way one way then rolled back so quickly she went almost all the way the other way. We put her favourite toy in front and she lunged for it. I cheered so loud she flopped back onto her back. she didn't look very happy but me and the 2 dd's cheered and clapped, DP just shook his head.

lumpybananapuree · 31/03/2011 19:08

cinnamon problem is the GPs not much better! Got my fingers crossed that no one gets "the bug" I can do any form of illness but I detest bugs!

Chelle I get Olly on the 91st centile not the 75th! Have you got a different chart?! I thought they were country wide! You finished all the furniture??

Jodey it'd be good if you could find out the title of that book!

Olly did a random lurch type movement earlier! got himself onto all fours then threw himself forward back onto his tummy! Very funny!

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2011 19:25

I just hate sick!! Being sick, clearing it up and the smell in my living room is horrible!

I read raising boys which is great highly recommend it, it's by steve biddulph.

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2011 19:29

Yay for Lucy!!!

saoirse86 · 31/03/2011 19:33

I have a HV one for you all. My cousin, who has a DS who was born at 27 weeks, was told when he was 6 1/2 months by her HV that he wasn't putting weight on fast enough so to give him wotsits, yes WOTSITS!!!!!!!!!

Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock Shock

SeaChelles · 31/03/2011 19:45

Haha Saoirse - wotsits! My lord...! Hmm She actually said to me that he should only be having a pint of milk a day - thats miniscule for Olly!!

*Lumpy - nope just checked and he's defo on the 75th and has been since birth. Maybe they are different charts?! 9.24kilos which works out about 20lb 5oz. Strange! Yep nearly done with furniture just on more sideboard to go - Lee late home and I can't do it coz me back has gone! Grrrr!

I thought I would be terrible with Olly being sick etc - but it didn't bother me at all. Even the other week when he was projectile vomiting carrot all over me!! The poo makes DP keck! Dead funny!

Yay Lucy!! Keep rolling!

newmum001 · 31/03/2011 19:56

Yay for Lucy rolling over

cinnamon, hope no one catches the bug!

jodey, no advice here. We got a sling for Grace and she hates it almost as much as i do!

Glad i'm not the only one with a pain in the arse HV. I've never seen that particular one before. The one who's usually there is lovely and is always saying how well Grace is doing. It was her that came round when Grace was 5 and a half months and was really pleased that she was getting on well with weaning and glad she hadn't dropped any bottles!

saoirse, i can't believe someone would advise wotsits!! Although i do think they are delicious they are hardly a good food for a baby!

cinnamongreyhound · 31/03/2011 20:06

Mine must be the same as yours lumpybananapuree as 9.24kg is 91st centile, will have a look at ds1's red book on case it's a newer chart.

SeaChelles · 31/03/2011 20:14

Hahahaha lumpy, cinammon - just studied my book and thought "hmmmm there's no other dots on here from when he was last weighed...." and just to reinforce my point about my crap HV - she has plotted Ollys weight on the wrong chart! You are both correct - 91st percentile! What a big boy! And someone said he looked tiny today - pah!! Wink

newmum001 · 31/03/2011 20:32

Jodey Grace's top teeth have cause her so much more pain than the bottom ones. She's been really poorly with it all week she's got 3 coming through on the top gum. One of the front ones has finally cut today and i was quite surprised how big it is compared to the bottom ones. She's been having sweats (but no temp) really runny poos (sorry if tmi) and she keeps really crying in her sleep but not waking up it's been a long week! She's also been super clingy to the point where if i so much a turn away from her she cries and she has never really been a crier!
