Hi all, I'm getting a bit worried as all other babies seem to be getting on well with finger foods and grace is still gagging and throwing up! She's on the second stage milk cause to be honest i didn't really know she could stay on the stage one so we might as well just stick with it now.

Went to a baby group last thursday and i'm sure that she picked up a bug, she was really really sick on Friday in my mums car so we turned round and came home and when i took her out of the car seat she was really pale and clammy and shaking! Then on Saturday i felt really ill and had a headache from Saturday afternoon until last night and DP was really sick on Saturday as well and he is never sick!

Does anyone know if there is a growth spurt at 6 months? Grace's sleep is soooo messed up over the last few days she's either sleeping loads or not sleeping much at all. I think her top two front teeth are coming through so that might explain her being a bit crabby but yesterday she would not be put down, would only sleep on me and that's really not like her!

cinnamon, glad things seem to be working out for your DH. I honestly think some companys just like to cause drama just to make staff realise that they're the boss! My boss does it but the second you threaten him with unions or tribunals he backs right down and makes you think you've been over reacting!

Glad the poorly babies are feeling a bit better.

Before i forget we have another issue aswell, Grace still isn't keen on being in her pram and the sling doesn't really work. Has anyone else had experience of this? It's making like very difficult as we can only go out when she's due a sleep cause if she's awake in the pram she gets really cross. It's starting to get me down cause now the weathers nice i want to start doing day trips etc but i just find it too stressful when she's kicking off all the time!

mapletrees · 22/03/2011 10:42

You've all inspired me to get a bit more interesting with the food I'm cooking for Louis.. I've just been doing simple veg/fruit mixes, baby rice, porridge and a bit of yoghurt so far, but I think it's time to get more adventerous Grin

newmum Louis doesn't like finger foods either. He'll happily bite on a bit of raw carrot, but anything that he can gum a chunk off from makes him gag and then cry. He likes being fed/feeding himself mush on a spoon though so I haven't been pushing finger foods, and I'm going to start introuducing small lumps like cous cous into his purees soon. Also, a HV recomended some healthy melt-in-the-mouth crisp-type things you can buy. I'm sure he'll get there in his own time, and Grace will too...

chelle I'm glad Olly's better. Louis has a horrible cough Sad which has completely buggered our already crap sleep, and is in a whole world of snot (so much that it's coming out of his eyes Shock - sorry TMI). And now I've caught it too so am being a particularly crap mummy.

Glad things are looking a bit brighter cinnamon. Hope the zoo is fun, I can't wait til Louis is big enough to enjoy that kind of thing Smile

lumpybananapuree · 22/03/2011 12:44

What a beautiful day! Its so hot! I could seriously get away with wearing a bikini & sunbathing! I've only got a vest top on & would put my shorts on if my legs weren't quite so hairy!!! Cinnamon I hope its as nice where you are. A lovely day for the zoo!

newmum001 · 22/03/2011 13:17

bloody hell it's roasting, going out in a jumper and ugg boots was not a good idea!! It's supposed to be even hotter tomorrow. It's days like this i wish we had a garden, we've got quite a big yard but no grass (sad)

Mapletrees someone on here (lumpy i think) recomended biscotti as a good first finger food cause it just melts so i've just bought some from tesco. The Heinz baby ones are on offer so will give them ago. Grace is really interested in food and reaches out for stuff but i'm worried about giving her stuff cause she always gags. Although i did mush up a tiny bit of baked beans last night (we had a crap tea cause i couldn't be arsed cooking) and she loved them. Might get some reduced salt ones and mix them with some mash for her tea!

SeaChelles · 22/03/2011 13:27

We had tinned tomatoes and mash yesterday. Great.

Today we had scrambled egg for lunch. There's fecking egg everywhere!!

Newmum - the biscotti are good, Olly loves them.

Thanks for pudding ideas. Going to pick up some chicken today for lunch tomorrow I think, or maybe some fish.

newmum001 · 22/03/2011 17:58

Well the biscotti went down really well until a big bit broke off and she gagged and was sick Sad she was loving it aswell. I had a nibble myself and they are really really tasty. Think i'll wait a few more weeks before trying finger food again. Does this gagging thing sort itself out or do i just have to hope she gets the hang of it? I'm still gonna try beans and mash for tea tomorrow, i'll just mush the beans up!

Had a phone call today that a guy who's in prison for something he did to me and my sister (very long story) is getting out in May. He was sentanced to 5 years but has only done 2 and a half. The terms of his release are that he's to have no contact with us and there was supposed to be a ban on certain areas to ensure we're safe but for some reason they have messed up the paperwork and it looks like he will be able to come to our town now! As far as we knew these conditions were finalised 2 years ago but because they've messed up we're probably going to have to see a guy that should still be in prison for another 2 and a half years!

On the bright side i can not believe what a beautiful day it has been today, makes me want to go and get very pissed in a beer garden but alas it's not to be! Hope everyones had a lovely day. cinnamon how was the zoo?

lumpybananapuree · 22/03/2011 19:07

fish steamed with chilli flakes, ginger, garlic, onion & red pepper was a hit! apart from the odd mouthful where I missed a chilli seed! AND I made it myself!

Newmum That doesn't sound very good. Hope it doesn't upset you too much.

Legs are now hair free & the summer clothes are out! Bring on the sun!

SeaChelles · 22/03/2011 19:23

Olly DOES NOT like fish..... Hmm...lol

watersprite · 22/03/2011 19:53

Cinnamon glad things are looking a little better, hope you had a good time at the zoo and the weather held :)

Newmum that's awful, sending you hugs.

Seachelles glad to hear Olly is on the mend :)

Maria-Ann loves broccoli, carrots, cauliflower but she loves parsnip the best, she's getting the hang of finger foods now and downed a full parsnip the other day.

Over weekend we took Maria-Ann to see my friend who also has a baby of similar age, we had a barbecue which was really nice. Maria-Ann screamed on and off for the 4 hrs we were there why their little one slept through all the screaming Hmm think it may be to unsual surrounding, on a positive note that night she slept for a full 8hrs even though i only got 4 [shocked]
She is back to normal now though and waking up every other hr Sad

Today took Maria-Ann out for a lovely walk and even walked to pick dd1 up from school, really loving this warm weather and hope it continues!

Vimto101 · 22/03/2011 20:04

Hi, not really sure how to introduce myself. A friend (part of the August gang) introduced me to this site and said I'd find mums going through the same sorts of ups and downs as me.
I'm hoping this is the most up to date thread. At first I thought there wasn't a September group, least not an active one, but then seeing how many posts in a thread!
I'm a first time mum and right now don't feel a particularly good one (nope can't seem to do the icons :-) )
Having a quick swiz through your thread, sounds like your all giving solids?
I'm breast feeding (and topping up with formula-long and also not happy story). I tried my little one with pureed banana but she kept pushing it out (weight is an issue so concerned about the lack of calories). She's had a few sucks on a pepper and that's about where we're at.
Can I ask how you all started? (am I ok to post to you?) My HV has upset me and I really don't think she really knows what she's talking about anymore.
Thanks

cinnamongreyhound · 22/03/2011 20:30

Oh... exciting new rounded box for typing into!

We had a lovely time thanks for asking! It was really warm, kids were all well behaved and everything went to plan. Luke was a bit of a pain in the bum, he's like Grace newmum001 if he's awake is not a fan of the pushchair, he's usually ok for 30mins but that's the most. We had a lovely lunch and we saw pretty much every animal so that was good. All 4 fell asleep on the way home and ds1 fell asleep on dh on the coach so must have been a busy day.

I am a bit strict with sugar and I don't know if you realise that biscotti are very high in sugar for those that are worried. I used to buy the organix gingerbread men and finger foods biscuits which are sweetened with grape juice for ds1 and Luke has had a couple. Feel free to ignore though I know a lot of people don't worry about it!

Dh gave Luke a couple of segments of satsuma today and he loved them!! Sucked them to death, also ate some cucumber sticks and dried apricots, he really likes his food now Grin. He's not gagging anywhere near as much so I think those not enjoying finger foods will get there, 6 months is still very young. Ds1 didn't have anything other than super smooth purees until he was 7 months and I don't remember him gagging at all.

Welcome Vimto101! What's your lo's name and her dob? Banana is not the best food to start weaning with as it can cause constipation, cooked and then pureed pear, carrot, butternut squash, sweet potato, parsnip, courgette and cauliflower are good to start with. Was your lo pushing it out because she didn't want it or because she still has the tongue thrust reflex? If it's the second then keep trying and she will learn not to do it. Sorry your HV upset you but hoepfully someone here can help with whatever she was unable to help you with.

SeaChelles · 22/03/2011 20:40

Welcome vimto101 - of course you are ok to post here!

I started weaning Olly (now 25 weeks) at about 17 weeks. I started him on baby porridge (as it was the closest thing to milk) just at breakfast time and gradually built up to pureed veg and he is now on three meals a day (slowly introducing meat and fish at the mo) plus pudding and some finger foods. I think the trick is to build it up slowly and as cinammon says - banana may not be the best due to constipation. The first veg I tried was carrot and then sweet potato. Also try mixing some of her formula with the food so the taste is kind of familiar and gradually reduce the amount in it.

Your LO will get there in the end I promise. And do let us know her name and DOB. Hope this helps a little. Smile

Oh and steer clear of lumpybananapuree and beaditali - they're nuts!! Hehe. Just kidding, I love them to pieces!

We are also all on facebook if you would like to join us. My email address is [email protected] if you want to friend request and I will add you to the group.

Vimto101 · 22/03/2011 21:12

Thanks for your welcome (how do I post the icons?)
My LO is Gwendoline and she was born on the 23rd Sept.

Yes it was the tongue thrust reflex. I just assumed it meant she wasn't ready. She wasn't born a low weight (7lbs 4oz) but has only put on about 5lbs in the 6 months. We had all sorts of problems to start with and took 8 wks to get BF established. Then I thought everything was ok but she has remained consistent in only gaining about 50g a week. Because there are more calories in breast milk than anything else I didn't want to interfere with how much she was getting.
That';s why I ended up reverting and giving her formula once or twice a day.

She seemed ok on the banana she did have, but will try the sweet potato (I really liked the idea of baby led weaning really)and carrot and see how we go, thanks.
Late here for me, I'll check in again tomorrow.
Night all :-)

cinnamongreyhound · 22/03/2011 21:18

Use [] not () Vimto101. If you want to do blw then the idea is that you don't start weaning when they still have the tongue thrust from what I understand. Try with cooked sticks of carrot, sweet potato, broccoli, large pasta shapes and see how she manages with that if you don't want to go down the feeding purees route. Where abouts are you? Will have to wait for comixminx her lo Aphra is on a low centile but very healthy and happy and I don't think she's had any suggestion to top up with formula (I could be wrong though).

beaditAli · 22/03/2011 21:21
Grin Just making sure people realise my pro comment was meant in jest??? Hope you know me better than that....... I was joking and it was my way of sulking on here that you've all gone quiet recently Sad

congrats Cinnamon for getting thru your inspection! Slapping a brilliant welldone 5 stars sticker on you!!! Grin

Really glad Olly is better and sitting and by now..... probably playing footie too! Grin Grin

Just been reading the thread about One Born Every......... making me very Sad how nasty some mn posters can be Sad

No more paddling in the living room recently.... must get that Daisy girl round again for some playtime with Jack.
I'm going now to find some recipes for Jack as he has frowned and practically spat out my last two concoctions (spelling??)
What can I mix with blueberries??

Also, bearbrains would welcome your chat re: weight as her little Daisy has stayed low centile since birth. She's a perfectly healthy gorgeous girl tho Smile

I knew you were joking beaditAli, will wear my sticker with pride! If my report is good will link to it so you can all read it. Keep missing obem due to crappy tv signal on channel4 (in fact anything not bbc in the evenings Sad). Will try to find it but it doesn't surprise me people being nasty.

Forgot to post earlier but Luke has slept through 9 nights in a row now, fingers crossed this is it!!!

beaditAli · 22/03/2011 21:43

newmum just been catching up properly on here on read your posts. Sounds awful..... really hope everything works out and hopefully whatever injunctions should be in place should be forced into place to protect you!
On the pram/sleep issue... we had that about a month ago. I had a couple of tantrums in a shopping centre when I'm sure he wanted to be in his cot. Seemed to start from nowhere as he's always been a brilliant sleeper but it was definitely a 'i'm not sleeping in my pram' mode. I persisted with long walks until he'd fall asleep eventually and then found that if he was still asleep when I got home, he'd happily stay asleep in the pram outside. Weather permitting of course! Grin Now he's happy as anything to sleep in his pram.
Fingers crossed it's just a phase for Grace and she'll be catching plenty Zeds in her cosy wheels soon.

cinnamon here's the link from last nights programme:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1176916-To-be-sad-and-quite-disgusted-with-this-young-couple-from-last-nights-One-Born-Every-Minute?pg=1

I thought the couple were really loving to each other and the Dad seemed pretty wise to their situation to me. The baby did look a bit slim to me but not to say it was the fault of the mum smoking so heavily... no comment was ever made on the programme that she did smoke heavily so loads of the posters on that thread are really jumping to conclusions. but worse......... check out how mean they are to each other!!!!!

OMG I got an email from the nursery today saying Louis can have a place from mid April. It's just made me realise how totally not ready I am to leave him. I'm not sure what to do now, I think I might have to see if I can put it off for a few weeks... The main thing, other than actually being apart from him, is still the feeding. He still doesn't really take milk from a cup, and my stash of frozen milk is no good (too much lipase making it taste bad, arrgh) so I'll have to either go to the nursey twice a day to feed him, or pump twice and leave him fresh milk for the next day (but if I can't store it for more than a couple of days I'll have to pump on the days I'm not working and give him a cup then too). Arrgh, I'm too tired to think straight and work out what's best.

Welcome Vimto. We started weaning at 25 weeks. I liked the idea of BLW but Louis prefers mush on a spoon to finger foods, and guess who's winning Grin Oh, and I think most of us have times when we feel like we're not being particularly good mums Smile (Look at the bottom of the page for how to do the emoticons etc.)

FriggFRIGG · 22/03/2011 22:14

HEELLOOOOOO!!!!
DID YOU MISS ME?!!!

beadit i was not mean on that thread... i liked the wheelbarrow couple...Grin

soooo how is everyone?!!

Arlo is really crawling fast now,and pulling himself up to a wobbly stand hanging on to the sofa, its very funny to watch Smile

it wasnt quite as funny when DD tryed to rugby tackle him to the ground yelling "baby arlo not walk?! BABY ARLO NOT WALK,!!!???!!!

he's not really eating solids yet, maybe once a day we'll give him something to gnaw on and/or some mush, but he's not really bothered and neither am i so it's mainly breastfeeding for now.

(i'll go back a bit now,and try to catch up)

comixminx · 22/03/2011 22:15

Hi all, I hear my name being called re BLW and low centiles! Welcome to vimto. Yes, my Aphra was solidly tracking the 2nd centile, though we haven't weighed her recently - the current advice is not to weigh them regularly, only at immunizations! And it says at the back of the red books, too, not to weigh them more than once a month, to save you worrying with fluctuations. Aphra's jabs were at home as we were part of a study so she hasn't been weighed since January so we're only guessing at her current weight to be honest, but she's probably about the same weight as Gwendoline by the sound of it - not more than 6 kilos I guess.

I believe it is quite usual for babies to be born at percentile X and end up on percentile Y - but so long as they track "their" centile well it really doesn't matter. Aphra was 6 lbs 6 oz at birth so was smaller than your Gwendoline to start with. I know it's worrying when there's not that much you can measure at first, to know if you're doing stuff right or getting it horribly wrong - especially when bfing! But I've stopped worrying and am just looking at Aphra and how bright & lively she is. Also looking at her nappies of course to check for plenty of wet nappies! My sister's kid was also smallish at birth and didn't gain weight very quickly, as was the case with my brother's baby. The former is now ten and a lovely boy, and the latter is about a year and a half old and a fantastic grinning toddler.

I wasn't advised to top up with formula, or not more than once when I sternly said I wasn't interested! I just tried to feed her more and/or more effectively - I also had some difficulties in the first place getting bf established, but it's all fine now and I'm very happy with it. The turning point I think was when I looked at her wrists and saw the little elastic band effect there - you know, when their little wrist are so chubby they're sort of dented in just at a line? I figured that if she had elastic band wrists and dimples elsewhere then it must be working ok!

I think that if you want to make sure you continue with as much bf & calories as possible, baby led weaning is a pretty good way of doing it. Your LO really won't get much food intake for the first, oooh, month or more? She'll be getting textures and tastes and experiences. Aphra now is really keen on her food and grabs at the spoon or at my hand if I'm holding something, and drags it forward into her mouth and really gums away at it enthusiastically. Sometimes she does gag, and it is briefly a bit heart-stopping for me, but she clears her own throat very quickly and it's not been a problem. Apparently it's good for them because it teaches them to handle lumps & texture. I give her what we're eating ourselves: pear, apple, kiwi fruit, pasta, sauce, chicken pie, veg goulash, broccoli, etc etc. I share my muesli with her as I have breakfast - carefully ensuring she doesn't get any large nuts or anything of course! I'm not massively paranoid about salt as we don't use much of it in our cooking - I just try not to give her anything that is very salty, like cheese or bacon, and not too much of stuff that might be saltier than ideal, like bread.

Sorry for the marathon post!

Aphra was born on the 2nd Sept by the way so she's about 3 weeks younger than Gwendoline I guess.

MammyG · 22/03/2011 22:25

Maple I was like that with DS1. Instead of putting it off could you try putting him in for an hour one day and increase it gradually so you both get used to it?

Welcome Vimto My lil girl Phoebe was born on the 22 sept also 7lb 4! She has really taken off weight wise since we started on solids. She is even getting a little pudgy now! She has fat bracelets which I think are gorgeous!! I think we started weaning around 19 weeks. She likes mush so gave up on any idea of BLW. In fact she has only started reaching for the spoon and still wont hold anything long enough in her hands to make it to her mouth. She screams the house down if I dont shovel food fast enough! Stick with us here ... great to have others in the same boat to banter away with.

beatdit Am pea green at your bath before bed! Sounds so relaxing! Would have them all into me if I even tried it! Hope you tucked your rubber duckies off to bed too!

Gorgeous day today! Boys spent the whole afternoon from 1pm outside! By 5.30 one was on the chair staring at the ceiling the other on the floor smiling at the baby but barely able to move! I just about got them to bed and not a peep since 7.15!! Please please please let us have a summer! Otherwise I will have to move to sunnier climes as it definitely suits my family!!

cinnamongreyhound · 22/03/2011 22:26

Off to bed now but HHUUGGSS to mapletrees, back tomorrow to chat x
