Here we go, down the slippery slope of parenthood. Slippery thanks to the poos, wees, leaky boobs and goodness knows what else :o :o

We'll be here to hold each other's virtual hands through the tough nights and delightful days, and to laugh at each other's stories of comedy nappy changes Hmm, and the fear (or not?) of getting back in the saddle, and coating some cervixes just for the fun of it again!! :o

Katie those toys sound fabulous. I remember my late grandpa making lovely wooden toys for my sister. Be strong about your baby's weight. Health care professionals seem obsessed about babies gaining lots of weight. As long as they're not losing weight and are bright and eating, I don't see the problem within reason.

Thank you for updating jjkm - Alexa's weight and length are really good! FWIW Lachlan also does little if I put him on his tummy and generally just sogs the mat too :).

saltnvinigarcrips · 29/03/2011 00:08

Ooh crysty isn't the milk behind the ears thing gross! and it smells! gallic I aim to bath ds every other day but it sometimes doesn't happen if there is something good on tv it has been a long day.

Well, I expressed for the first time this morning using a manual pump and managed to get 70 ml in a relatively short space of time. Would have got more if I wasn't distracted with trying to hold baby on other boob and make myself some toast. Is anyone else expressing? I'm trying to build up a stock pile so I can maybe go out one night and drink lots of wine go for a run on a regular basis.

Henry has his injections tomorrow so feeling nervous. Saw the doc tonight and he is being referred to a paeditrician as his foreskin is too tight :( Hoping it'll loosen by itself as don't want him to have to have a cut or anything. Poor baby. Can't believe how quick he has grown. Love the sound of his burbling though.

saltnvinigarcrips · 29/03/2011 01:20

should that be babbling not burbling?

Crystyclear · 29/03/2011 09:28

jjkm the girls sound lovely and I bet it's wonderful to finally have them home.

I would love to have toys like yours katie to play with myself.

salt haven't started expressing yet, but will do starting this week, as I've booked an evening out with friends (gulp) for two weeks time. scared and probably won't go through with it. if i'm on here saying i'm not going, tell me to go please guys.

Just off to get DS weighed.

This morning he found his arms and hands, and his voice!

gallicgirl · 29/03/2011 13:14

You'll be fine Crysty and you must do it. It's weird at first but you can trust DP and get expressing!

Alys was lovely yesterday. We got lots of smiles and grins for he first time really. She has smiled before but never been so reactive.

Can I ask a poo question? This probably won't apply to BF babies but is poo liquid or like a paste? Not sure what's normal.

Ryuk · 29/03/2011 13:53

DS is combined fed, and his poos seem to vary. The small ones are usually more paste-like, and the bigger ones tend to be runnier.

Pootle78 · 29/03/2011 16:40

Hello - [Sticks head around the door and waves sheepishly]

Well, they don't tell you in Parent Craft classes what it's really like being a parent!!!

I am going to go back over the last few pages and see what everyone is up to, hope everyone is enjoying the smiles and have happy babies!

Just a quick update on us Jacob has been quite poorly, which resulted in a 2 night stay at the local children's ward. He has had a UTI (possibly since birth) and is now on antibiotics for the next 3 months until we can get kidney scans.

He was presenting with reflux so spent 1 evening on children's ward to be sent off with a carrier bag full of infant gavison, donperidone and something else! 5 days later I had a call from a paedatrician saying that the urine sample they took was infected and he needed antibiotics and a follow up clinic appointment 48 hours later, at the follow up appointment it seemed that the antibiotics had made him worse (screaming in pain that would last up to 6 hours) so they took lots of bloods and gave him a lumber puncture and admitted him for 48 hours for iv antibitoics.

Being a parent has been traumatic and manic to say the least and it is now since the antibiotics have kicked in, we realise that what Jacob was going through must have been hell for him. He still screams every now and then when he has a wee but it's like we have a new baby and we are starting all over again.

he was born on the 75th pencentile and has dropped to just above 25%, fingers crossed now we have the problems under control he will shoot back up the field!!!

He still has reflux but we are just on the gaviscon now.

Salt I have expressed since he was born, he can latch to me but he never settles if he has had a feed from me so expressing 3 out of his 5 feeds a day am trying to up by volume bu nothing seems to be working at the moment.

Anyway sorry for the long ramble, I look forward to catching up with everyone

RunningKatie · 29/03/2011 17:30

hello pootle, sounds like you've had a tough time of it with Jacob, poor little thing. Hopefully he'll be piling the weight on again now as you say. :)

Can I have some advice from the mummies please? We want to take DD swimming, are we best to get a swimming cossie with the inbuilt washable waterproof nappy, or just a waterproof nappy, or a cossie and then a disposable waterproof nappy underneath or one of those body suit type things? I have no idea! We're just going to the local pool but we're also going to the seaside for a week in June.

HV is coming on Monday to do the 8 week development check, so now I've no idea what the 8 week check at the Drs is - not that we have the appointment through yet.

saltnvinigarcrips · 29/03/2011 18:05

Oh Pootle how awful! Poor Jacob! Glad that he is on the mend now and that you are not going through all that worry. Did they know what caused the UTI ? A lumbar puncture sounds awful (seen it on 'House') for a little baby. I hop he'll soon get back to a good weight.
Well ds had his 8 week jabs today. I got him home and gave him some calpol to pre-empt a fever but I've just been reading that that can lessen the effect of the injection and it is better not to do that :( Anyway he is sleeping off the trauma bless him (of both the immunisation and my force feeding him calpol) and he does seem to have a bit of diarrhoea which I thought would be difficult to imagine as his normal poo is like liquid! DH is also asleep on the couch having got home early so despite having company I'm very bored. Can't even make dinner as waiting on tesco delivery.

Pootle how much are you able to express in one go? Yesterday I managed 70 ml but today just 20 ml (although to be fair on my boob I got bored).
Running I hadn't even thought about waterproof nappies. Can you get them in Tescos?

Crystyclear · 29/03/2011 18:38

evening all!

well, the bloody weighing clinic wasn't open when i went today, so suffered the indignity of registering my housing benefit claim instead. would you believe that they want a letter of evidence from my doctor which explains why i only filed a request for benefits two weeks after DS' birth? apparently, it's just a phone call and i should of course have prioritised phoning the council immediately after DS was born! [sarcasm and fury emoticon]

anyway, DS slept solidly all morning whilst i was faffing about with this and not a wink all afternoon. just done bath and bed and he's sleeping after a serious screaming episode - it broke my heart.

I think I'm going to take him to the cranial osteopath as his napping is terrible and evening screaming is so miserable for him. hope that helps!

pootle WB. sorry you've been having such a scary time of it and hope that Jacob gets well soon. My LO was born on the 9th centile, so don't worry about him being small, he'll soon be piling on the pounds again.

thanks for the encouragement gallic

katie i asked the HV about swimming stuff - he said buy the swimming/waterproof nappies and just use one of those, as they absorb the water more slowly. I'm going to find out how effective they are in the next couple of weeks, which i'm excited about, as DS loves baths and is always swimming about!

salt hope DS is ok after hsi jabs. i'm dreading next week for that reason! best go buy some baby calpol (and a box of tissues for his sobbing mum!)

HubbaHubbaBubba · 29/03/2011 18:49

quick post on phone. Running i wd just buy little swimmers and pants to cover them for indoor now and swim suit with shoulders for beach

CupcakesHay · 29/03/2011 19:08

Helllo - need to read posts - will try one day soon - just an update - not flying back to syria yet Sad as might possibly kick off - and don't want to risk it for Jesse....

so staying in london for another few days and DH gone back....

Anyhow - PROMISE once i get back to put MN-ing into my routine.... need to catch up so badly with you all - but currently going to be "single mum" so will get to see how crysty copes! Smile - bet i won't be as good as her! Luckily have MIL here at night! right 0 will catch up soon promise - but just wanted to say haven't forgotton about you!

Fuzzywood · 29/03/2011 19:33

Quick one here as well. Lovely to hear from you Pootle sounds like you've been having a really tough time, hope Jacob continues to improve now.
Running for swimming I use a disposable nappy with a re-usable one like a splash happy on top as generally the disposable ones are a bit big at the mo and the splash happy holds it on. I then tend to put a wet suit type swimsuit on top for warmth. Depends on temperature of the pool but I fond otherwise it gets a bit cold for the little ones pretty quickly.

Cupcakes that's pants but better safe than sorry, hope MIL doesn't drive you too crazy.

Will catch up on rest of posts later, trying to juggle screaming baby hyper toddler and dinner, anyone got a spare hand or 2 Grin

travispickles · 29/03/2011 21:35

Hi all! Glad to hear Jacob on the mend POotle - that sounds very stressful.
Saskia had her jabs yesterday, was prepared for it but still...Sad. Am very tired tonight, will catch up properly tomorrow. Glad you ok cupcakes, although you must be fed up now!! Hope it picks up...

saltnvinigarcrips · 30/03/2011 11:59

My goodness where is everyone this morning?

RunningKatie · 30/03/2011 12:15

I am here, waiting to go to BF club to discuss my poor attachment yet again. Just had a comedy session test driving the travel cot for Saturday eve, I can assemble it single-handedly whilst DP observes and makes stupid observations.

Cupcakes, sorry to hear you're not going back to DH and your cats just yet but sounds a sensible idea.

So hungry all the time, I'm never going to lose weight at this rate.

gallicgirl · 30/03/2011 13:34

Oh dear cupcakes. Is it just a few days to see how the situation develops? If you fancy a trip to the seaside, just let me know.

Katie just worry about being well and feeding baby - losing weight can follow once you're running again.

Oh dear Pootle I hope Jacob is ok now. Puts my minor niggles into perspective.

We changed Alys's milk at the weekend to try and ease the reflux. She struggled to feed initially as the milk was too thick for the teat so she was taking an hour to take her bottle almost. We've now got a variflow teat and she finishes 180ml in about 5 minutes Shock. Mind you, it does mean she has some discomfort from the speed as well as the change of formula. To to it all off, she had her injections this morning so she's going to be really miserable for the next couple of days I think - and DP is busy at work so has to work extra hours :(

I was going to query with the doctor about her failure to make eye contact but decided not to bother seeing as she was staring at him and smiling. Typical! She had just wee-ed on his couch though. ROFL

LadyBuzz · 30/03/2011 14:47

pootle good to see you, Glad Jacob is on the mend.

cupcakes Sad for you but you are very probably doing the best thing.

I have a brand new niece, born this morning Grin just got a pic of DB Grin

running I have now put myself on a diety, despite the exercise I was putting weight on Shock.

Bloody radio 1 have announced 1 big weekend is in Carlisle - same day as the christening grrr!

travispickles · 30/03/2011 18:46

Hi all... Running what's happening Sat eve? Am sure you have told us but due to senility lack of sleep can't remember. We are heading to Southwold for dads's birthday this weekend, a 6 hour drive onn fri eve and back sunday. Just not long enough Sad and dreading the bloody drive!
At least not feeling so down today, was starting to worry that I was slipping into a bit of depression but feel great today. Probably hormones? Although no sign of period yet. Anyone else not had one?

RunningKatie · 30/03/2011 19:50

Travis - no period here either, am hoping that particular joy will not appear for a while yet. Saturday is best friend from Uni's impossibly glamorous wedding in Cambridge, decided thanks to the wise advice from everyone here to stay over and booked a family room but we're taking the travel cot just in case as I'm a paranoid mum! :)

Was told today about someone who had twin girls, and then fell pregnant 3 months after their birth - with twin boys. So now has 4 kids with 1 year and 5 days between them! Must get contraception sorted before going near DP.

DD is now screaming before she drops off to sleep, this is a new trick which I'm hoping will wear off soon, then she screams when she wakes up till I ram a boob in her mouth.

travispickles · 30/03/2011 21:38

Same here Running - the scream before sleep thing. Real screaming as well [shudder].

gallicgirl · 30/03/2011 22:29

Auntie Flo visited me last week. Can't BF delay it because of the hormones? Had our 6 9 week check today so I can now allow the DP to have his wicked way with confidence :)

Travis have fun in Southwold. It's lovely and it's the home of one of the best beers ever, the one and only Adnams Grin. Forgot the name of the nice pub though.

DD also screams usually before sleep, or is at least very unsettled between last 2 feeds. Been nice and quiet tonight though thanks to her immunisations. Haven't had to break open the calpol yet.
