CSWS - How are you today?

Pistachio - How much longer have you got now? I've lost track of your timings.

I'm still in my dressing gown. Blush I've been trying to write reports for school. Ugh - I really hate this time of the year. Every time I tell myself how much better organised I'm going to be next year, and every year it's a horrible mad panic. I never seem to learn. [sigh]

oh pistachio that's soon! I thought it was much longer!

Good luck with reports, cf. I know they can be difficult to get finished under the best of circumstances. When will you see the consultant next?

Q is coughing and coughing and coughing and coughing.... X infinity. WHAT can I do? I've put the plasmacluster ion machine from sharp that I was product testing for MN ready to be collected as the trial period is over, but I've just plugged it back in, but still not really helping. It's so phlegm-y and horrible and he has very few breaks in between. Now crying because it hurts :( He has a fever. Not too high. It's consistently at around 38.6 or 38.7 - taking 3 readings each time. ugh. We have a field trip on Tuesday at school.

I gave him the inhaler at nap time and that helped soothe it a bit... he's stopped for a few minutes just now..

Am I going to have to get yet ANOTHER round of antibiotics??? I really don't like this! nurse ronshar? Anyone? :(

Honeymoonmummy · 07/03/2011 06:29

Hi Star, I don't know what to suggest other than steam. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along. I hope Q is feeling better this morning x

Pistachio, yes I did mean palpable! Blush Another midwife appt today, Pops at nursery today but I have so many things to do there's no chance of a relaxing day for me unfortunately! They now do a sweep at 40 weeks in our area, what do I need to know about sweeps folks??

:( for Q being ill again star.

I never found sweeps to be particularly uncomfortable hmm, but then I never found them to be particularly effective either!

Feeling fairly good here, but the wounds under my waterproof dressings are getting REALLY itchy which is irritating!

Right, must go shower.

StarExpat · 07/03/2011 09:37

Isn't a sweep much like a smear but they just don't use the tools?

I have no idea why he keeps getting chest infections. I'm very annoyed because I don't know what I'm doing wrong! No, he's not in too clean of an environment. He's at the cm daily, who is tidy, but not obsessively clean and he is exposed to plenty of germs. Maybe it's too many... ugh. I have a dr appt for him at 11.50 and I've come into school to get some stuff sorted for a sub first.

csws glad you are feeling ok now. I hope the dc are being lovely and helpful to you :)

hmm i had a sweep this time at 37 weeks... i was in hospital waiting for induction for pre-eclampsia so i think they figured they would do it anyway Hmm The consultant was feeling my cervix and just did it without warning me. I was a bit upset/shocked about it tbh.

Only thing I would say is treat it like a smear and try to relax and also that you may well bleed and apparently that is normal (this is what the consultant told me anyway)

star Orin is constantly ill and it gets me down too. He is currently really coughy. I also worry what i'm doing wrong (even to the extent of thinking my BM is defective because its not protecting him, bonkers i know). But partly i think that this winter has been really bad for illnesses and he's getting them all from nursery (via Emma). I try to tell myself he'll end up stronger as a result, but its hard.

I have a potty training question or two. Emma has been in knickers since friday and it seemed to click yesterday evening. She is now telling me and taking herself to the potty or toilet when she needs to (only wish she'd do a poo so i know that side is alright too). I have been doing a reward system which is fine, but how and when can i stop. Also i am a bit scared to leave the house - is it really ok to get her on the potty in random public places?

CSWS sounds like you are recovering amazingly well

cf so sorry for what you're going through. the last thing you need is to be hanging around not knowing

StarExpat · 07/03/2011 13:32

Yuck pistachio sounds awful

Ksal - we still use rewards at moment because illness put him a bit backward. But we don't have accidents typically now.
Get a potette plus from amazon. I got one and it's perfect. Can be a big toilet seat cover thing or a regular little potty with disposable bags for wee/poo with a padding on bottom - no leaks very very portable folds up small and Q loves it.

Dammmit Pistachio I just asked that exact question of the midwife (before I read your post) re does it start a "false" labour because it's "artificial" and she said no Angry

That was such a frustrating MW appt (got the sweep next week BTW), saw two of them because one is a student, they couldn't decide which side the baby was on Hmm but they thought he might be a bit back to back HmmHmm how the hell do they know that when they can't even tell what side he's on????? Plus I can feel his bum sticking out of the top of my bump on the left hand side, if I can feel his bum how the hell can he be back to back???

Grrrrr!!!!!!!!!

StarExpat · 07/03/2011 14:57

Hmm - oommmmmm calmmmm
Just ignore them and do what feels best to you. Don't let them work you up :) it will be great!

Pistachio - how did you get DS to wee standing without getting wee on himself? I can't figure that out with Q.

Our potette has been used in a corner of ELC before with Q Blush
I like it bc our potty is too big to tote around with us and needed a small item that can be whipped at at short notice. I just make sure liner is in place every time before folding up, though! Only takes 5 seconds.

Q is getting better at holding it for longer periods but today all is just upside down. Cm gives him stickers and sello tapes them to his clothes so they don't fall off... Each time he wees or poos on potty. He's a walking sticker chart Grin

Dr gave me antibiotic prescription to use if he continues to get fevers over next few days... (??). He was coughing in waiting area and people were commenting and at chemist earlier Q coughed up a bit of yellowish green phlegm and pharmacist said needed antibiotics for it... He didn't cough for dr in the 3 mins we saw her Hmm... coughed nonstop for a full minute when we left, though. Frustrating. He was asking loads of questions and dr was telling me how articulate and chatty he is. Nice to hear but not the focus of the visit!

She said "pop back over tomorrow if he's still like this".... Hmm. he's been this way 3 days now and making this appointment took loads of juggling and organisation!

I haven't seen this dr before. She looked very uninterested. But, I'm happy to hold off on abs if maybe not needed. I just don't want it getting worse... Can't do pneumonia again.

StarExpat · 07/03/2011 16:24

It's the gasping for air between coughs that really scares me.

Honeymoonmummy · 07/03/2011 17:06

Thanks Star! Grin glad you got ABs, hopefully they will do the trick. Am considering booking an extra appt for Friday with my usual MW, I've not seen her for 2 weeks. Just been to docs for few things myself and she said doesn't currently know protocol but would have thought sweep would be better at hospital than MW clinic given my strep b?? Just another thing to worry about!!

pepperrabbit · 07/03/2011 18:13

I had sweeps with all three, no difference to the DSs but with DD the consultant did it herself, she didn't hold out much hope and had booked me for an induction on the monday - into the ante natal ward, not delivery suite which was the clue Hmm. That was the wed afternoon and I went into labour thurs evening, so something speeded up.
I'm facing a dinner mutiny. Fussy eater is complaining cos he has cucumber in his sandwich, and the others don't like the pasta sauce. Angry

Coconutfeet · 07/03/2011 19:50

HMM - I begged the midwife for a sweep when I was 40+5 and the alternative was induction the following day. She did it but said she wasn't very hopeful. My waters broke that night and I went into labour so it definitely did something (I'd also eaten the hottest curry I could get my hands on and done a lot of vigorous walking). TBH it wasn't at all painful.

Star - I really hope you manage to avoid ABs. It's been a rubbish winter for germs and don't forget you're exposed to them all day long at work. I know I've had a constant cold for months.

Glad to hear you're on the mend CSWS. Itchy wound are so ANNOYING!

StarExpat · 07/03/2011 20:11

Well we've filled the prescription :(
Tried for 3 hours to get temp down from a little over 39 and were unsuccessful. I don't know why he spikes temps that won't go down. It's really frightening. He enjoys making us worry!

Honeymoonmummy · 07/03/2011 22:27

Have decided to leave the sweep to 41 weeks if I need it, have just read that for first baby it's recommended at 40 weeks and second baby it's recommended at 41 weeks anyway.

I forgot to say, they did say I'm now 1/5 (or 2/5 per student Hmm) palpable now which has to be good news for a second pregnancy given that the baby usually only engages at the start of labour???

Honeymoonmummy · 07/03/2011 22:47

Oh and do you know what the midwife said when I said I had a home BP monitor??? "Are you a nurse"????? She didn't say it in a sarcastic way but how else could you mean that??? I just don't seem to get on with midwives!

Right, I'm going to stop talking to myself dominating this thread now and get some sleep. MW did tell me to start resting up a bit more given my BP was close to the level where they start to get itchy so DH has ordered me to hand Pops over to PILs tomorrow and have a restful day.

KSal · 08/03/2011 10:12

HMM i also am not a nurse and have ahome BP monitor.... pretty much stopped me getting re-admitted to hospital a few days after we'd got home as my BP went right up again.... they let me monitor at home and report in to my GP. V glad i have it!

it's getting so close now!

I have been stressing that Em hasn't had a poo for a couple of days worrying that she was witholding because of the potty training... but i came back from putting Orin down for a nap to find her on the potty "doing a big poo mummy".... so proud! (also v glad i got there before she pulled her knickers up again Hmm

Oh oh oh I forgot to tell you something, she said something on the lines of "I didn't know it was a young persons clinic today". I just said well that's me ruled out then. I have actually calmed down about the whole thing now, I've managed to get a cancellation with my normal midwife this afternoon, I trust her and just want to get back to the calm status I was in before that visit wound me up - I'm getting there thanks to long bath last night and hypnobirthing CD this morning! Am just sorting out photos of Poppy for the past year so that always chills me out! [smilee]
