geogteach - DS wanted me to make a carrot cake for DD's birthday, but as my niece and nephew are vege phobic, I just made a butter one - although dropped the caster sugar on the floor and sprayed butter all over the kitchen - DS helped actually...

Hi all,
bit tired at the moment, as Alf keeps waking up through the night. I think he may have a bit of an ear infection - he keeps rubbing his ears and shaking his head slowly from side to side?
Anyway he slept until 11am this morning, and so did I. Yay! Caught up on my sleep a bit.
Periods are totally wonky, big gap in between and then they seem to go on for ages, am still bf'ing. I have been reading about introducing cow's milk at 1 - presumably to replace bf feeds. When I am at work dp gives Alfie a formula feed, as he only misses one feed. Do you think we should replace the missed bf with cow's milk?
Apparently dp gives him the formula in a bottle, which I'm not keen on, as I have read that bottles weren't good for their dental development at this age. He has a drinking cup with a regulator the rest of the time. I'm sure he would drink milk from a cup, but not sure if he would fancy his bedtime feed being a cup?
He is down to 4 or 5 feeds a day tops, with 2 or 3 being between 7pm and 9am, and he has a cup of water or diluted fruit juice at meals. Being 1 seems to be a big bench mark for making these kinds of changes, but I'm a bit unclear about how I should make them. I'm definately going to follow the baby-led weaning method, and let him decide when he needs a bf.
What is everyone else doing?
We have avoided wheat to a large degree and all dairy, and I had thought I would begin to introduce them when he was one - like pasta and bread, but it might be too much to give him a cheese sandwich with a cup of cow's milk on his first birthday.

geogteach · 18/10/2005 21:08

Masie with DS1 (the only one not dairy intolerent), I pretty much introduced cows milk and binned the bottle at one. He did take his beaker of milk to bed and continued to do so until he was 3, so it can work. The other 2 are much more reluctant milk (substitute) drinkers and I kept the bottle longer to ensure they still drank, DS2 has an appointment in a couple of weeks time to discuss what happens now he is one. DD self weaned from soya pretty quick and was definately off a bottle by 18 months but now drinks no milk at all.

spookylips · 18/10/2005 22:39

well atm baba use the bottle for her milk and her beaker for her water...

baba still got her snotty nose for the past 2 weeks, and bad cough but the sneezing had gone - hooray!! , but she had been off her foods and milk since she caught the cold as she is preferring the milk than her solids (havent pureed them for aaagggeeessss now as she loves finger-foods... its sometimes abit of a pain as she wants to feed herself now - without the mess !!! but as long she is enjoying it)

Awwwww, this morning i got baba out of her cot in her bedroom into our bed (as i couldnt open my eyes at 8am this morning due to cold), once i finished feeding her with her bottle, she was crawling on our bedroom floor and she found a tissue in my sport bag, she took it out and went "atchoo", "atchoo"

(gulp!) and now ive no periods (apart from when i was pg).. i dont feel pg and no im not BF either so.... is that it??

Happy birthday jay!

Had my OU exam today - god knows how I have done - think I should have discompensation for time not studing as playing with Grace. She is just soo cute (well I am a little biased) but she just loves soft toys (dd1 wasn;t and still isn't really into them) - but Grace loves them - cuddling them and shaking her head with them tucked into the crook of her neck and saying ahhhhh.

Spookylips - how is your mum's house? How is Alfie? Where is Rickman - and hello to everyone else!

spookylips · 19/10/2005 23:20

cazzy - ill keep my fingers cross for you!.. when will you hear the results?

ive got my mock exam on 21st nov - BSL level 2 (gulp!) and its so hard trying to do anything when the baba always distracting yer!! (i always go into the other room but i can hear her in the playpen doing soemthing so i have to check))

Sorry I haven´t been around for a while, but it´s great catching up with everyone´s news. I can´t believe some of you are doing exams, moving house, getting married, not to mention being pregnant etc. I´m struggling enough just getting through each day.
Ds had his birthday last Friday - a very quiet family affair. He´s a real cutey, but seems to be getting a little bit louder everyday and boy can he eat. I´m sure it´s not physically possible for such a small body to be stuffed with so much food, but somehow he manages it.

maisiemog · 20/10/2005 23:12

Hi all,
Alfie is doing fine thanks Cazzy, I'm glad to hear Grace shares his love of soft toys. He has a leopard thing that he squishes and also swings around by its leg.
Good luck to you mummies sitting exams. I am sooo glad I didn't bother finishing my MSc - enough studying already! Mind you it is great fun using your brain for something other than calculating how much sleep your baby has had and whether they need another nap and whether it's too close to bedtime and etc....
Aren't the babies lovely now, they are getting more like little boys and girls all the time. Sometimes when I am at work I think about one of Alfie's noises and start laughing to myself. And my colleagues all move their seats away from me...
He went to the docs about his head shaking and waving, but the doc reckoned there was nothing obviously wrong with his ears, and that it must be developmental.
Has anyone ever heard of this before?
It's getting near to MMR time for us.

spookylips · 21/10/2005 10:25

hiya all... and welcome back Huppa, llloonnnnnggggggg time no hear! .. hope youre well?

ive got my BSL lvl 2 exam in Feb next year and im dreading it now!! (but i know i will pass it but it making me nervous!)

Hi guys, had a fairly good week and have been doing a food diary for the dietitian as i spoke to her re toby's weight.

Earlier this evening he drank 100 mls of milk in one go... this is good for him as recently he has only managed about 40 mls max. He used to drink upto 150mls but that was all a past blur!!!!

He did have another chest infection a couple of weeks ago which may have set him back or it could just be him. He has always been "one step forwards and 2 steps back".

We are gradually building up stuff for his sensory room and so far have bought a mirror ball an bubble tube! He got a fantastic toy for his birthday from woolworths, its 3 spheres that change colour.... highly recommend it!!!

Hope everyone has had a good week. I have had holiday this week to get a few bits sorted.

Anyway i have rambled on enough for one day!

maisiemog · 22/10/2005 12:27

Hi Jbad, a food diary. And when you look at it later, does it seem like he's eating much? We kept a feeding diary for Little Alf for the first coupld of months, because he was mixed fed until he was able to breast feed properly.
It was quite good to look at it sometimes, to see what progress he was making. I think when they are ill the weight can fluctuate. Like Alfie has a croupy type cough, which started yesterday, and he is being quite picky with food at the moment.
I don't mind though, because I know he will go back to normal when he feels better.
Are you setting up a whole room with the stuff, or is it in Toby's bedroom?
Biglips, I'm tired all the time now, I have aged ten years and have permanent dark circles under my eyes.
I am still feeling a bit chubby, but it's so hard to go out for walks with the weather as it is. The whole cutting down on cake thing is tricky, as my dp buys me cakes as a treat (bless).

Riebee · 22/10/2005 21:31

Hello all

Not really had time to read all the posts so a big Happy Birthday to all the babas who are already one

Well the chimpster is one this Friday and I can't believe how quick this year has gone. I am sooo v v tired though as I am on average only getting about 4hrs sleep at night. Chimpy has been ill on and off with various things for a month now and the night time routine has just gone to pot, he's pretty good when he first goes down but from around 11pm it is just a round of waking and him tying to b/f every couple of hours. I have tried not to give in all the time but it results in him screaming blue murder.
Maisiemog... How many times do you feed in the night? oh and by the way chimpy shakes his head from side to side all the time sometmes I think it will fall off he does it so violently. I've noticed he does it at bedtime too I think he uses it to try and stay awake

Hope everyone is well

spookylips · 23/10/2005 19:30

Riebee - ooh hope chimpy be ok? as thats the problem as his nighttime sleep had been mess up due to his various illness... just hope he get well very soon!

...and happi bday too!

my baba is funny as she saying "ooh" and "aah" alot lately.. she is watchin the Gremlins with my DP and baba is saying "ooh" and "ahh"

OP posts:
cazzybabs · 24/10/2005 13:25

Grace has said her first word and its.....

"la la" - dp is in denial..."can't belive her 1st word is a bloody teletubby" etc etc..

Well it might not be actually - but it makes a good story...this w/e she has said "la la" and "ma" for more and "nana" for banna.

Any one else got good 1st words..

dd1 1'st word has dat for cat!

huppa · 24/10/2005 18:31

Didn´t have much time to post the other day and have realised that I forgot to wish everyone elses little ones - apologies.

jbadgirl - also realised I may of been a bit insensitive talking about ds being a pig while you´re obviouly worring about your ds losing weight. Hopefully once he´s feeling fully fit he´ll start putting the wait back on. If it´s any consolation ds´s greediness does have its down side. I was at a friend´s yesterday and was so busy chatting I didn´t notice that ds had managed to get into the rubbish bin and was eating their left overs from the day before [vomit emotion}.

cazzybabs at la la. No words from ds, but if dd has anything his first word will be either poo or wee wee - both of which she finds hysterically funny at the moment and so repeats them at least a hundred times a day.

maisiemog · 24/10/2005 18:37

Ha ha! Maybe Grace thinks your dp looks like lala.
Alfie calls me mmmmmumm and dp dadadad.
He also say hiya and 'Could you turn over to cbeebies please?'
His first word was tinkywinky (no just kidding)
Riebee, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Wakes up! Wha! Wha's going on?!
Sorry! you were saying about not getting any sleep...
Alfie's not 100% at the moment. He had a croup on Saturday night and Sunday, which turned into a head cold on Sunday night. He has been waking up all the time during the night for feeds. My boobs have fallen off!
He is a bit better today, but only if I let him pull all the kitchen drawers out. Otherwise he is ill and cries.
I think doctors recommend that treatment.
'Yes, let your baby empty the drawers three times a day after meals'
