....thought i'd better start a thread as there are currently 4 of us, with several more to follow!

Joey is now 4 days old (where did the time go?!?), and is doing really well. He actually managed to sleep through with just one feed last night, though i must confess i cheated and had him in bed with me (at my MW's recommendation!) as he was so fretful the night before.

Looking forward in the coming days and weeks to welcoming the other members of the Oct 05 antenatal group to this post-natal club, so i won't feel like Billy No-Mates, talking to myself

BBB - know what you mean about wanting to loose all the pads. I think I may have got rid of the sanitry one (ds is 3 weeks today) but no chance with the breast pads - unless you count loosing them as in when I take one out to feed ds and it gets knocked off the table/bed etc and i can't find it so whip a new one in, then the midwife turns up and sudenly all the errant breast pads seem to crawl out of their hiding place and all i can see are breast pads all over the place.

Sorry to hear everyone is having such a rough time, although it is reassuring to know it's not just me. Much respect to those of you with toddlers as well. I really don't know how you manage.

nervousmum · 25/10/2005 12:04

Hi All, well we had a bit of a breakthrough last night - Joey actually slept for 5 hours solid! Mind you, it took ages to settle him first..., and he's been making up for it with gusto this morning.

Has anyone been watching that new BBC series on Friday nights, 'Blessed'? (written by Ben Elton, i think). I totally empathise with the main character, to the point that i'm sure i own that actual milk-stained nightie. Joey too has issues with parental comfort. Every time we sit down holding him, or dare to shift an arm so it doesn't drop off entirely, he cries! I have a 4 week old dictator!

Any news from J&B's mummy yet? I read on the antenatal thread that things may have been hotting up.... Have a good day, NM x

Morning ladies. I do hope things get better for you all soon. William luckily has been great at going to sleep so I don't have that nightmare of crying all night long. However, he is now 8 weeks old but still is waking up at 11pm, 3am and 7am. I know I should be grateful but as I do the 3am and 7am feed (DH does 11pm one)I'm getting rather tired...! When should they be sleeping through the night!?

I had my checkup at the dr yesterday and William had his injections. If you guys thought the heel prick was bad, wait until you have to have him immunised. Such a piercing scream.... really heart wrenching. He is now 9lbs so getting enormous! But is on the 50th percentile so not obese!

Evening all,

Had the midwife today and Issac is still not gaining weight very well, they reckon he is not getting enough food due to using the nipple shields, but no shields then no food - so they rec a cranial osteopath which is where we have been today.

She got loads of wind out but then touched his shoulders and he screamed blue murder, apparently really sore from being turned round with the ventouse during delivery. He is sleeping well now, but we have to stop putting clothes on over his head now and really, really wind him, she said to be a bit more forceful than you think you can and that should shift the wind. Poor little love I hate to think that he is in that much pain, but hopefully this will make him all better and get him to think about latching on

Have a good evening everyone, I think mine could go either way at the moment

Moomin · 25/10/2005 22:23

snap rodeo1 - I've got a 10th Oct baby too!

She's sleeping for England all day long and doesn't take too much settling at night but has a period of a kind of wakefulness between 11pm and about 3am. She won't cry as such but makes sounds like she's an escapologist trying to get out of a bag - lots of grunting and muffled effort. Maybe she has tummy ache?

Is about 4oz every 3-4 hours about normal?

nervousmum · 26/10/2005 11:12

Morning, just been seen by the health visitor who weighed Joey (he's now up to 10Ib 4oz) and is really pleased with his progress. However, as she was packing up to leave, she said "give me a ring if any problems, bring Joey down to child health clinic if any problems, if not, I don't need to see you again"

Is this normal? Should i be at all concerned?? I was under the impression that health visitors were the bane of a mother's life, demanding visits regularly and weighing and measuring baby with military timing (at least, that's what my mother said it was like when she had me)

No midwives and no health visitor - i'm gonna be a nervous wreck!

WOO HOO!!!

I can finally join you!

Will post more when i have a little bit more time, but just to say I DID IT!

Hope you are all well xxx

jai38 · 26/10/2005 13:52

Congrats JARM, and snap momin we are 10 October as well!!

I have a very sore engorged left breast, has anyone got any ideas on how to relieve it, a baby bouncing off of it is causing tears

SusiS · 26/10/2005 16:50

woheyyyyy jm&b - you did it!!! and welcome to little rebecca

jay: try to express by hand a little to get it down; and before anything put a warm flannel on it and massage for a while - hope it helps!

BigBumpBonnie · 26/10/2005 19:00

Moomin, 4 oz every 3-4 hours is perfect. Ruby was on 4 oz but has started to drain the bottles, so the midwife suggested upping it to 5. Had her weighed yesterday and she has put on a pound . She is 2 weeks old today so am really pleased. She looks a lot bigger and her newborn clothes are now getting a bit snug so time for the 0-3 months stuff I reckon.

Anyway huge CONGRATS to Jess and Rebeccas Mummy. Knew you could do it!!!xxx

danishmummy · 26/10/2005 19:53

Hi all! Also happy to join you now!

James is now 12 days old and such a good boy, eating and sleeping really well -- only wakes up twice a night for a feed. Alterego, I also keep him in bed with me, and I am sure our boys wake up more than the 2-3 times, but settle back without calling us, as they are comforted by us being near.

He's calling for me. Hope you are all well and will have a good night. Bye for now.

nervousmum · 26/10/2005 20:15

BBB - I know what you mean. sad day yesterday. I have had to consign all Joey's 'newborn' stuff to the loft and crack open the 0-3 months range stuff. My little boy is growing up.

Talking of growing-up things, we opened his very first bank account this afternoon

snap with the wakeful baby from 11-3am!

she's beginning to increase with feeding, and we'll see on friday if she's gaining weight as due to have final midwife check before hv takes over.

stump dropped off on monday, and was glad i had friend here to advise as wasn't expecting it to be bloody.

got her registered today, so she's a real person now . we've given her my name as a second name so she's natalie samantha.

she was born on 15th if you want to update the stats

mawbroon · 26/10/2005 21:29

Hello everyone.

I haven't had time to read all the entries on here, but just wanted to update you all with what's been happening.

John James (that's his Sunday name - we are calling him Johnny) arrived by c section on Friday 21st October at 11.15am. I was still optimisitc until the last minute that they would be able to turn him by ECV. I was all prepped for the theatre and was somehow (mistakenly) under the impression that I was getting a spinal and then they would try to turn him as the consultant had said that it would require quite a lot of force. Fine I thought. Next thing is this sooking noise from behind the screen and somebody saying "that's them removing the amniotic fluid now" I had no idea that they had even cut me open!!!!!! Within a couple of minutes, they were showing me my little boy. I lost 1400mls of blood which is apparantly more than twice the expected blood loss, but I managed to avoid a transfusion (at my request). Also, the consultant said that my uterus is heart shaped rather than pear shaped, and Johnny's head was stuck in one of the lobes and this is why he was unable to turn head down. I was reading about things that can go wrong with this unusually shaped uterus and am just delighted that I was able to carry him to full term with no ill effects. It does mean that future pregnancies have a fairly high chance of also being breech.

Anyway, we got home on Monday afternoon and I am delighted at how well we are getting on. Daddy is banished to the spare bedroom with earplugs which allows him to get a full night's sleep leaving him in a fit state to look after me during the day. He is being wonderful and is fantastic with Johnny too. Breastfeeding was a bit tricky at first, but we are now pretty good at it. He seems to be sleeping for around 3 hours between feeds and this afternoon he slept for over 4 hours which let me get some proper sleep.

Needless to say, of course, Johnny is the cutest baby ever in the history of the world and I just can't stop looking at him!!!

Hope you are all doing well.

Redtartanlass · 26/10/2005 22:01

Hi RTL here at last......have tried to read the whole thread but my eyes keping closing!!!

But I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels like breastfeeding is someone putting a peg to your nipple and twisitng like mad.

I'm on day 5 remind me girls...does it get better and will I ever sleep again.

The afterpains have now subsided, so that's a bonus.

Baby is a wee darling, I just wish it didn't hurt so much to breastfeed.....

alterego · 26/10/2005 22:52

Alterid is 1 month old now and bf has just in the last couple of days become totally pain free.

He's finally put on weight. At 3 weeks he was stll 1oz dowon on his birth weight but in the last week he put on 13 1/2 oz . I'm sure that is because I came off the antibiotics last week. Beginning to feel much more like my old (pre-pregnancy) self. Even managing to ger some housework and spring (autumn) cleaning done when alterid sleeps. He's lost his newborn look now and is spending more time awake but seems quite content to sit in hos bouncy chair and watch the world go by, in his cross-eyed way.

Elf1981 · 27/10/2005 05:58

Last night put Evelyn in her Moses basket at 10:30 and she slept until 5:00, missing the usual 3:00 feed. I'm shocked! She probably would have slept longer than 5:00 but I think I startled her by checking she was still breathing!!
Glad for it though as last night I had a really bad headache. I'm not feeling too clever at the mo, got the beginnings of what could end up as a chest infection (awful throat, the worst cough ever that hurts!) and also got to start antibiotics as my scar has started weeping and is a bit red - doctor thinks it's thrush?!! I thought that wasn't something you got on skin?
Evelyn now weighs 9lbs 3, up from 8lbs 9 which she went down to after the birth.

Mawbroon Congrats! Glad the C-section went well. Has Johnny had a hip check / follow up appointment at a hip clinic?? Evelyn was at 0 on each hip at birth (good thing) but was given a follow up appointment at the hospital anyway as thats procedure where I am. One of her hips has started to click slightly now so I'm getting a bit worried. Health Visitor yesterday hadn't had full training about clicky hips so couldn't help much, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed til Evie's appointment at the hospital.

Elf1981 · 27/10/2005 05:59

Also big congratulations to all those with recent births!!

mawbroon · 27/10/2005 10:37

Hi Elf

Re the hip thing - his hips were ok at birth but I am aware that breechies can have problems with their hips because of the way they were lying in the womb. Is it routine in your area for all babies or just for all breechies? A work colleague of mine had a baby with clicky hips and although she had to wear a wee leg brace for a few weeks, it very quickly solved itself, so although its impossible not to worry about it, it isn't the end of the world if she does need to wear a brace for a bit.

I was really surprised in the hospital when one of the midwives asked me if Johnny had been breech before she had even looked at my notes. Apparantly they have perfectly round heads as they have never been engaged in the pelvis wheras even if a head down baby was delivered by c section, it will still have a slightly pointy head. Have you noticed that with Evie?

Anyway, can't get myself sucked back into Mumsnetting for hours on end!!

Hope everyone is well and enjoying their little treasures as much as I am.

Moomin · 27/10/2005 11:54

I'm led to believe a scan is routine for all breech babies. I had one with dd1 at 6wks and have been told to expect one for Evie too but haven't had appt through yet.

Dh woek me up at 2am to tell me he had diaorrhea and vomiting and he was going up to the attic to sleep (it is a bedroom , btw, not just rafters and cobwebs!). All I could say was "oh god I hope it's food poisoning and not a bug!" The thought of both dds being ill and me trying to retch with this awful painful scar was too much to even imagine - but poor dh! I felt rotten afterwards. Anyway he seems much better this morning so it doesn't seem to be as much of a crisis as I first thought, thank the lord.

Evie's bodyclock seems to be shifting slightly: she slept really soundly from 11pm to 4am then fed and slept 4-6am was radgety from 6 until 8 and seems very hungry again this morning. She was weighed on Tuesday - 6lb 15oz, after having gone down to 6lb 1oz the previous saturday (10 days before)- little bloater!

SusiS · 27/10/2005 12:32

god, who needs a newborn with a toddler around!
ds had me up a few times last night. (10, 12, 1, and up at 5) - and little miss wanted a feed at 3am - so quite tired now!!!

but ds seemed fairly allright in the morning, just a big grumpy - can't blame him with that little sleep! and so i dropped him off at nursery - they haven't called yet so he seems to be ok!
little miss is asleep since 9am - but someone once told me: never wake a sleeping baby

we also have a hip scan booked. mainly because my niece had problems with her hips; poor girl had to wear one of them laces for weeks (but is absolutly fine now)

oh, we also had our 'hearing test' a week ago - everything's fine

i just hope with all them more frequent feeds now she'll put on some weight!!!!

rodeo1 · 27/10/2005 13:27

Wow! so is that 3 oct 10th babies?

Have managed to get out of pyjamas before 12 today yippee! Boobs are quire engorged today and a bit lumpy. have tried massaging them in the bath, using hot flannels, and have had the breast pump on them too, AND baby in different positions! phew, and all in one morning!! How are everyone elses breasts? (You could only ask that on a newly postnatal thread couldn't you?!)

Plus baby's got a cold already! Could be something to do with her sis and bro sneezing all over her last week. She's not feeding too bad but is snuffley and occasionally brings up some phlemy stuff (sorry!) usually when there is no cloth to hand.

Susi, how old is your ds? Mine's 3 and a half and is being a bit of a nightmare TBH, extremely grumpy and not wanting to go to bed etc. I know rationally it's to be expected with recent changes but I just want him back to normal! I'm sure in time he will - hopefully!

Big congrats to Mawbroon and JARM!

rodeo1 · 27/10/2005 13:31

Moomin you did make me chuckle about your dh! I'm paranoid about sickness bugs, always have spray bottle of anti-bac glued to me - and wish I had an attic room to banish my dp to!

BigBumpBonnie · 27/10/2005 13:43

Took both dds on a short shopping trip to the supermarket today for the first time. It took me an hour to get everything ready just to leave home! Just as we were about to go, Ruby wanted a feed. I really don't know how I'm ever going to get anywhere on time. Anyway put Ruby in the baby seat in the trolley with dd1 sitting next to her. Dd1 spent the whole time with her arm around her baby sister. It was so sweet. She is only 2 but really protective of her already. It all went well and I managed to get home in one piece. Not going to take them anywhere far on my own yet but finding things a bit easier now. Ruby is great during the day but still waking every 2-3 hours at night and not really settling after each feed. It's really hard to get her wind up and if I try and put her down without winding her properly she is usually sick. I bought some infracol today and have given her some of that before her last feed but she obviously hated the taste and I felt really mean as she heaved. I'm not even sure if it works.

Anyway, I'd better go and do something productive while it's all quiet. Glad everyone else seems to be doing ok

novadandypowder · 27/10/2005 17:44

BBB i started trying Infacol a couple of days ago and after the initial 'thats a new/strange taste' expression found that Natalie was ok with it for the following feeds. I find it helps with her, although like your little one she's more wakeful at night and doesn't settle after feeds.

I'm very nervous about venturing out of the house still, but think i'll be more willing to give it a try when DH goes back to work and I'll be eager to get out of the house for a bit of a break.

Looking into classes and groups in the area, got a post natal class lined up for the end of november, and a local neals yard do baby massage. Anxious to meet other new mums in the area, as lovely as you fellow MNers are you can't do lunch!!
