....thought i'd better start a thread as there are currently 4 of us, with several more to follow!

Joey is now 4 days old (where did the time go?!?), and is doing really well. He actually managed to sleep through with just one feed last night, though i must confess i cheated and had him in bed with me (at my MW's recommendation!) as he was so fretful the night before.

Looking forward in the coming days and weeks to welcoming the other members of the Oct 05 antenatal group to this post-natal club, so i won't feel like Billy No-Mates, talking to myself

Thanks for the advice alterego - managed to express a bit but problems latching - may have blocked ducts. Caitlyn still snacking but not far from birth weight now. Felt tired today as fed at 12.00 midnight and 4.00am - such is life I suppose.

mishmash2 · 12/10/2005 08:27

Morning ladies! Hope you all had ok nights and aren't too tired. I'm hoping that William is going to sleep through the night soon. He woke at 3am last night and the night before but only took a couple of oz before falling asleep..... fingers crossed he'll sleep through it soon. I can't wait!! Going to bed at 3.30am and then up at 5.45am is getting to me...!!!

Marinda - I had problems latching too - is she in the right position? Can you hold your breast to make it easier for her to latch on to? My bf counsellor told me to hold the head around the neck with my thumb and index finger and then pull William in quickly when he has his mouth around the breast by the shoulders. Is there anyone you can go and see?

I'm off for lunch today with a friend.. am missing my nap... help!

nervousmum · 12/10/2005 21:08

Hi All,

Well, saw the health visitor today, and Joey has had a bit of a growth spurt, to say the least - he's put on 12 ounces since she last weighed him 6 days ago! Pretty impressive for a 16 day old!

Congratulations Elf and Button Moon - hope your bundle of joy are both ok

Ahh, Evie is having the heal prick test done today... I'm nervous!
Should have been yesterday but midwife decided not to see us (I'd assumed they came everyday til they signed you over to health visitor) but now it will be today so she's in her moses basket with a pair of fluffy socks on to keep her feet warm in preperation...
Mummy is off to have some chocolate to settle her nerves!

mishmash2 · 13/10/2005 09:53

Elfie - dont' worry about the heel prick. It really wasn't that bad - William didn't even cry (mind you he had his heel pricked in hospital all the time as they were testing for his blood sugar level due to be prem). My midwife suggested that I feed him whilst she did it to take his mind off it, but he was sleeping and didn't stir!

NM - I'm very impressed by Joey's growth spurt. That's great news. I'm getting W weighed later - highlight of the week!!

ButtonMoon · 13/10/2005 13:53

DS had heel prick today and screamed.....but he was fine afetr a cuddle from me....don't worry....it is only for a minute or so and then they are fine..... he's sunbathing in the window at mo for his jaundice happy as larry!!

Bad night last night took him 2 hours to settle after 3 am feed....not fun!! but those beautiful eyes just make me melt every time!! I'll be thinking of all you other middle of the night feeders too...at least we are not alone!! It can only get better.

MW weighed him today and he's lost the max 10% of his birth weight so he's got some catching up to do for next week!! Feeding going better now and boobs not so Jordan like!!

Take it easy everyone and enjoy!!!

alterego · 13/10/2005 15:19

alterid lost 8oz and is still 1oz short of birthweight (18 days old) but m/w said that was good enough as he is now puttimg weight on albeit slowly. I wonder if he is slow because I've not been well. Had to got to the doctors again yesterday as feverish again, got to take more paracetemol and nurofen and hope that does the trick. A/bs finish on Saturday and praying that infection will be cleared by then as just want to be back to fighting fit again.

I do think I've won in the sleeping baby stakes though (famous last words). Alterid sleeps all night in the bed with me, just waking for his feeds and going back to sleep again straight away, no winding etc., just the occasional nappy change. (no, I'm not swapping him )

alterego · 13/10/2005 15:22

sorry to be negative but heel prick was heart breaking. It took a long time to get enough blood out and he screamed including for quite a while afterwards. Wouldn't feed either, was too upset. Fortunately results were back yesterday, he's fine, but more importantly they did have enough blood and he doesn't have to have it re-done which I was dreading.

morningpaper · 13/10/2005 19:37

A quick hello from me! I'm so happy to be joining you!

First night was ok - Jo woke every hour and fed for half an hour. 3 black nappies in the night - I'd forgotten about those! She is swallowing more today so hopefully milk is coming in. Lots and lots of screaming as well and frustrated banging at the breast - she responded well last night to Daddy's rocking though which is especially nice for him.

My torn bits are sore but manageable - afterpains bloody AWFUL!

Will try to read this thread now! Congrats all. xxx

morningpaper · 13/10/2005 19:42

p.s. Oh I'd forgotten about the newborn latch as well - it's like trying to breastfeed a stapler. Hope I don't get too sore!

marinda · 13/10/2005 21:46

Given up with breasts - too painful. Also Caitlyn prefers a bottle - managed to express abit - but I don't think it will last - so it will be formula for me.
Caitlyn is feeding about 31/2 to 4 hourly and I find this so knackering on top of a 4 year old who suddenly appears very stroppy. Anyone else having problems with sibling rivalry ?

I just had a little tear from the birth (in water) but I spent 1.75 hours pushing and am brused to hell. Tried walking around the town after going to DS's nursery - what a mistake -my bleeding came on all heavy again !!! Also I seem to be leaking bits of wee now and again. Midwife just says it will go back to normal - whenever this may be. Oh the joys !!!!

Elf1981 · 13/10/2005 21:49

Heal prick was so distressing. Evelyn was screaming and DH says I was sat on the sofa with wide eyes and a pale face. Gawd, I couldn't bear it. I know, I'm a wuss. I know it needs doing, but I just wasn't expecting her to scream that much. She looked at me afterwards as if to say "bad mummy"!!

Was weighed as well, gone from 8lbs 13.5 to 8lbs 8 so midwife quite happy with that. Taking her into work tomorrow to see everybody & going to do a bit of shopping. Have promised I'll walk slowly and not over do it, though DH will be with me as well.

Oh, and with you on the newborn latch. I was b/feeding while on the phone to my mum and she got offended when I said "little bleeder" because she was chomping at the boobs!!

mishmash2 · 14/10/2005 09:29

Morning all. I'm so sorry to hear all of you had a nightmare with teh heel pricks. At least it is over now and hopefully won't need to be done again.

I had William weighed yesterday - he is now 7lbs 12oz so has caught you all up! He has put on 1lbs 7oz in 2 weeks! I am putting that down to teh formula that I have been feeding him at night (I don't produce enough milk) and also the fact taht I now express and feed him breast milk from a bottle so I know how much he is getting. I can't believe how much he has grown (5lbs 1oz at birth 6.5 weeks ago!).

Alterego - it sounds like you have an angel baby - lucky you!

Hope the stitches /tears are healing well.

alterego · 14/10/2005 11:43

Your baby's overtaken mine. It's his due day today and I've had him nearly 3 weeks now. It was such a relief getting him out though.

I'm not sure he's quite the angel baby. Perfect at night but seem to be on a permanent feeding fest during the day. doesn't seem to go back in his cot for more than 20-30 minutes. Still, he's a little charmer so can't complain.

Donbean · 14/10/2005 12:48

Bigbumpbonnie will be joining you in a day two because baby Ruby Jean arrived safe and sound on Wed 12th October at 7pm weighing 7lbs 13.5oz.
She says she will get here as soon as she can.xxx
(ive posted on the October thread to let every one know too )

nervousmum · 14/10/2005 14:50

Mishmash - glad to hear William is putting weight on and doing well

With you all on the sore nipples due to latching - i only get problems on my left side (Joey's least favourite!), but it really feels like i've got a Dyson sucking on full power!

Sorry to hear about the bad heel prick tests. I've yet to find out Joey's result, but he had to be stabbed twice as the dozy midwife couldn't get enough blood out of the first attempt, and yes he howled the place down.

Just trying to arrange his christening - another Mother-in-Law nightmare. Good job she lives 200+ miles away. Still not far enough, IMO...! Take it easy, NM x

Jockey · 14/10/2005 14:58

My turn to join you too, which is a nice feeling! Dd2 born early hours of Thursday 13 Oct - I cannot believe it is still only the 14th as I feel as if I have been up for days! We've done a lot of snoozing together and plenty of feeding - she seems to be permanently attached to my breast.

Will catch up with you all when I'm a bit more with it!

ButtonMoon · 14/10/2005 16:19

Hi all....LOL at the bf being like stapler...it really does smart doesn't it? I too keep using expletives when DS tugs at my nipple just before he's finished a feed. All fine in the day but full of wind at night and it takes him 2hours to settle after each feed DH out tonigght so putting DD to bed early then me and DS are heading for bed VERY early to try to catch up. He may end up in bed with me though if he keeps mistaking day for night, otherwise I'm gonna be a zombie!!
Marinda-mw said that blood would increase when you become more active, so think this is normal. I sometimes feel like I've got something falling out of me (sorry if TMI) ...must start doing pelvic floors too...supposed to help with healing process but a bind to remember!
morning paper- congrats and the afterpains were agony for me too...I was sobbbing for a few days...get plenty of painkillers in a a hot water bottle to ease them...they'll be better in a few days.
Congrats to all other newbies

morningpaper · 14/10/2005 16:29

Button: Afterpains are definitely subsiding today (day 2) and I've not had to take any painkillers which is great.

Jo sleeps ALL DAY! This is SO different from dd1 who was awake ALL THE TIME. I would have thought that all the drugs I took with dd1's birth would have made her sleepy and the no-drugs at Jo's birth would have made her more wakeful, but it's the other way around.

She is feeding well though and all sorts of dreadful crap is coming out of her bottom, so that's all good. (Which reminds me, it's so much nicer doing this for the second time and not worrying incessantly about all the strange multi-coloured mincemeat that is currently filling her nappies!)

Congrats Jockey - I shall watch your progress with great interest as I am just a day 'in front' with my little one (born on 12th)!

morningpaper · 14/10/2005 16:32

Marinda: sympathies about your bruising - I was also in water and the pushing was 'only' 45 minutes and it was horrific - how did you manage for so long?! I would have asked for a gun. I almost gave up and walked home.

nervousmum · 15/10/2005 14:08

What's the best thing for nappy rash? We tried Joey with the Bambino Mio's for a day on Thursday, and since then he's had a red bottom with tiny little bumps on the surface. I've gone back to the Huggies disposables for now whilst we heal it. All i've used so far is vaseline, as i didn't like the idea of harsh chemicals directly on his skin (ironic, i know, seeing as i'm perfectly happy to put him in evil disposable nappies!)

OP posts:
morningpaper · 15/10/2005 16:28

NM is he happy to lie naked on the (warm) bathroom floor? Put some toys around to look at and a towel under his bottom and try to keep him butt naked for 10 minutes or so a day - I did this when I was having my morning shower. It seemed to help.

morningpaper · 15/10/2005 20:01

You are all so quiet! I keep checking in and NOTHING. Where are all the crises?!

So far Jo has mostly just slept although last night my milk came in and she spent the night screaming and eating and vomiting - finally went to sleep at 5 a.m.! I couldn't pacify her without nursing her and that just filled her up and made her vomit but in the end I just did it. She's sleeping propped up on pillows because she always seems so stuffed with milk!

Went to Mothercare today and a man swore at me for being in his way and I burst into tears. Bastard. I think that I am about the enter the hormonal-up-and-down stage and I'm feeling very emotionally fragile - and physically battered too!

SusiS · 15/10/2005 21:14

guess i should join you ladies

had my little girl on the 6th and she's being a good girl so far!
yesterday i actually had 7 hours sleep!!! (11-6)
and during the day she feeds about every 4 hours (more frequently in the evening), then sleeps alot and in between has her 'activity' time looking around with her big blue eyes!

she did give us a harder time today but turned out that she was bunged up; and once the nappy was filled - finally brown! not that strange green stuff - she was back to 'normal'!

well, we cheat sometimes and if she gets restless and won't stop whinging we use a finger as a 'dummy' - works a treat
that's what i did the nights before too. she sleeps in a basket next to my bed; perfect positon for my arm to just fall down and a finger into her mouth

i hope you all get some well earned sleep tonight!!!

marinda · 15/10/2005 22:26

morningpaper - vomiting here too- pisses me off especially as it is my 2nd.(WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??). Kanckered out also even though Caitlyn slept last night from 11 till 5.00pm. She is so snuffley however it is difficult to get any sleep when she is in the same room. These first few weeks are dead hard arn't they - as there is the birth to recover from as well. Ordered a sling for a newborn from mothercare catalogue today- sould be easier carrying than heavy car seat.
