Edinburgh. It's a bit of a hike isn't it? We used to go to Devon every couple of years as kids as my mum's family's from there, usually stayed around Tavistock. We're driving to London in December so reckon we might go for an evening/night drive and try and avoid too much whinging-baby-in-car-seat stuff!!

Hope Linus is feeling better soon.

starlover · 25/09/2005 21:10

ooh blimey yeah! don't envy you... will you fly down to london?

OP posts:
Nik72 · 25/09/2005 21:34

Hate flying & can pack loads of clobber in the car! We usually make it down in 6 hours, which isn't too bad.

roosmum · 26/09/2005 19:42

hello all...

...we're back too, from a wkend at PIL.
it's only a 2hr car journey, but roo gets totally bored now if we're in the car for any length of time, & the whinging drives me nuts...sympathies sl & nik & anyone travelling a long way.

just wondering, are other feb babes still in baby carriers for carseats, or have you moved up to the next stage ones? have ordered one for roo today, cos he's huge & i also think it'll help for him to be forward facing, maybe less boring for him.

starlover - as for small MEOS, i've found some extenders for big/fat babes or older ones...duly ordered.

starlover · 26/09/2005 19:45

ooh interesting about the extenders roosmum! where did you get them from?

Linus went into his next stage car seat last weekend (ready for trip!)... he is very long and was getting so cross in the other one. He kept twisting his head round to try and see me, or trying to sit upright and getting very upset... so figured he was better off in the forward facing one

hi tipex... linus has a stridor already which doesn't help with telling if he has a cold! lol he has trachea malacia which is getting better, but has been worse while he has been ill

the car seat thing i found SO much conflicting info. some said 9kg, some said 9months, some said 9kg AND 9 months, some said a year!
so, i decided to just go for it he is 9kg and not too far off 9months so decided it'd be ok. He also (i think) has pretty strong neck muscles... was lifting his head off my shoulder while i was still in hospital with him much to the amazement of the midwives! lol

fingers crossed we won't be in any crashes though!

OP posts:
futurity · 27/09/2005 06:31

my friend works for a shop that sells car seats and in their training it says the age of the baby isn't the factor...they have to be a minimum of 9KG and be able to sit unsupported for half an hour as this shows that there neck muscles are strong enough. I gave it two weeks after Sam met these points and he went into his forward facing car seat the other week and loves it!

starlover · 27/09/2005 16:20

ahh well in that case linus is fine because he sits up most of the time!

hi tipes, Linus seems much better today. croakiness seems to have disappeared almost overnight!

I remember when he was learning to sit. I used to put him on his changing mat with a pillow on each side so whatever way he fell he had a soft landing! lol

tipex i think linus went through a phase a bit like that. I gfigured it was mostly frustration at not being able to move/tell us what he wanted etc

we still get the screaming when taking him out of the bath though! he has to be pacified with dummy and a duck to play with and quickly put in a nappy before a bottle is shoved in his mouth!

he seems better if i can kind of try and show him what i am about to do so it isn;'t a total surprise.
ie, before he goes in the highchair i tell him it's dinner time, point to the food and reach my arms out for him until he puts his arms up. then i pick him up and put him in
doesn't always work, but if nothing else it distracts him a bit!

we've also been doing baby signing and he has started signing milk! only when he sees us do it, and sees the bottle of milk..but it's a start.

i am sure your ds is fine at the childminder, although i totally understand you feeling like that. I am not back at work, but was thinking of putting linus in nursery one afternoon a week... but had the same thoughts!

You're doing your best for him and don't let anyone (even yourself) tell you otherwise!

Nik72 · 29/09/2005 14:56

Hi all!
Tipex - a friend's HV called this the "blob stage" where they get really frustrated and grumpy at not being able to do what they want! I'm sure none of our beautiful babies are anything like a blob but the behaviour sounds familiar!!

IKNWYM about worrying when you're at work, I'm OK most of the time but sometimes my mind just goes off and the next thing I'm panicking in case some lunatic burns down the nursery. Having said that she seems happy there and has started getting quite excited when I drop her off. Had to stifle my giggles when I picked her up yesterday as they'd been making chocolate crackles - the thought of a bunch of babies being able to cook tickled me somewhat!! They solemnly wrapped up the one that Ellie had apparently "made" for me to take home. Am now thoroughly looking forward to next week's glass blowing and macrame....

pjsmum · 29/09/2005 17:11

Tipex i know what you mean about worrying about them whne you're not there. Polly starts nursery, just one day a week, tomorrow and i've just collected from her last settling in session. She cried when she saw me, why what have they done to her? Was told she was in the accident book, nearly had a heart attack. She'd bumped her head but obviously its the worse type of bumped head according to me ( and she's never done that with me Don't think i'm gonna take her tomorrow! Im sure your ds is fine with the childminder but lets face it no one can or will ever be able to look after as well as we do!

futurity · 29/09/2005 20:02

We are definetly going through the "blob stage" (love that term!). Sam isn't too grumpy but he is DESPERATE to move...he can just about make it on to all fours and then he jigs around and then collapses! He loves it when I put him on all falls and he just stays there and watches me crawl around like a luney showing him what to do! My other son didn't crawl until 10 1/2 months and had his own unique style (difficult to explain!) so all this rocking and practicing is new to me!

Had a peak at your website Starlover...Linus looks so grown up behind bars!

starlover · 29/09/2005 20:10

nik72- am pmsl at them "cooking" with a 7month old! lol

linus is king of the headbumps... so don't worry! he doesn't even seem to notice half the time. no sense no feeling? lol he has a big bruise down the front of his forehead atm where he dived off the bed. Dp caught him but not before he hit his head on the edge! he'd have probably been safer falling onto the floor i think!

Futurity... doesn't he just? He is tall for his age as well. I can't believe how quickly he has grown

My dd is a definite drama queen and she doesn't stop crying when I put her in the buggy or put her down on the floor. Had fun yesterday when I was out with friends. DD decided to throw a huge tantrum in a restaurant because I put her back in the buggy to eat my food. I tried to ignore the stares from people around me.

As for the childminder, I felt the same when I left dd with one. You do wonder what goes on when they are left but I try to think that she's having a good time being around other children.

SL - congratulations on getting Linus to sign 'milk'. Apparently, the first sign most babies do is 'bird' so maybe it's worth trying that one on him too. I think my dd is understanding the signs but just waiting for her to sign back.

roosmum · 30/09/2005 21:13

hello all...

well looks like roo's cracked the blob stage, now crawling & it's sooo cute, tiny crawling 'steps' (which dh didn't believe me abt until he finally saw for himself yesterday!). also pulls himself up to standing on furniture, which i find really scary cos he WILL fall & bump himself if he does it without me noticing (roosmum mostly watching/worrying like a hawk!)...we've done quite well i think so far to avoid falls/bruises - poor linus, starlover! guess it's only a matter of time tho, a friend's baby pulled a chair onto himself today & had nosebleed/split lip as a result, she was gutted tho her ds was ok later.
starlover - v excited to hear linus is signing milk! we're starting next month at classes, really looking forward. i generally sign 'drink', 'food' & 'more' to roo, tho nothing back yet. we got a signing book out from the library too (a baby board book, it's v sweet) & will maybe try & do a few more ... hmm, guess who's gonna have more fun doing this, roo or roosmum..?
& hello wombat, good to know you're a fellow signer! do you & dd do classes or are you teaching yourself?
starlover - meos onesize extenders were on ebay (new tho), but were popolini ones, wd fit a meos too. haven't got them yet.

how's the sleep tipex? roo has been good this last week or so, dunno whether it was the 'sleep training' or whether he's done it naturally, anyhow he doesn't have milk at night now & has more or less been sleeping through.
the new problem is that he's off his food big style for the last couple of days, maybe teeth??? eating just one meal a day really, but like you tipex suddenly having loads of milk in the day too. i'm not fussing abt it tho, it's happened before & i'm hoping he'll go back to eating ok soon enough.

hugs to all you mums leaving your babes with childcarers, i'm sure they're all fine, tho thinking so won't put your minds at rest huh?! NOT looking forward to when i have to leave roo anywhere....

starlover · 01/10/2005 16:47

wombat... your dd sounds just like me! lol i think now is also a prime time for separation anxiety (?) maybe wrong though... so perhaps not just a drama queen! lol

roosmum.. glad to hear you're over the blob stage! well done roo! Linus just fell over again. i think i am a very bad mummy... most of the time he doesn't really seem to care though.
will keep a look out for extenders, although i really shouldn't be buying more nappy stuff.

Linus is really not having much sleep these days. Today so far he's had about 20 minutes! Tried to put him down for a sleep earlier but he just played about in the cot for a while so gave up in the end! That's the worst bit about them standing... Linus just pulls himself up and tries to lick the wallpaper, or reach the nearby shelf etc etc etc! He also plays with the mobile which he can just about reach!

Is anyone else going on the christmas meet-up?

I am not very good on what's what in terms of protein and everything else!
Linus has the following which I think are good for protein:
Lentils
Rice
Cheese
Milk- in food and on breakfast (and yoghurt)
Eggs

Haven't tried chick-peas but keep meaning to!

Hi all,
Having a rough time with dd suddenly not sleeping well at all - must be teething as she's had a terrible nappy rash too. She's fine during the day mind you & suddenly eating like a horse. Last night was the first night in a while that she slept well and I'd gone to bed at 9pm in anticipation of a rotten night so when she woke up at 6am I'd had the best night's sleep in ages AND was on my day off so had a really lovely day with her.
We're not going to the meet up as a) it's in London and b) I'm on a girls weekend away on the lash then - can't wait .

jolly4 · 06/10/2005 21:31
