New Fred. Apologies for dullness of title - we need curly for witticisms.

cas just attended a sleep and routine class this morning and I have in my possession some very specific timings. R goes to bed at 8pm at the moment after a big feed, but it will be 7pm from tomorrow, and a wake up to feed at 10.30pm. Woman said by 12 weeks and 12lb they can sleep through the night as long as you nail the daytime naps and don't feed to sleep, which is what we have been doing. Sleep after play, wake to feed.

I'll report back on success or otherwise. BTW she also said 1am and 5am waking times apply to almost every baby ever born. I thought it was just us! It coincides with a v light sleep section. Put your head under the duvet is the advice and let them grizzle it out. It isn't that they are hungry, just that they have woken themselves up and can't get back to sleep for a few mins

AlpinePony · 05/11/2010 16:35

curly At this end it's bath at 8pm and then bottle and down, he's usually asleep by 8:40. It seems to make absolutely no difference whatsoever if I top him up at 10pm (or whenever I go to bed), he wakes up between 3:30 and 5 no matter how full his tum-tum was. Am on a bad'/strict mummy vibe right now and trying to get him through an extra 15 minutes a night. A 5:30am start is fine by me. 3:30 not so much, especially now I'm back at work.

CurlyCasper · 05/11/2010 16:52

thanks for the sharing both. cunty what you describe is pretty much what I want to try in terms of eat play sleep. will be great to all compare notes with same age babies.

CurlyCasper · 05/11/2010 16:55

BTW bonfire tonight, early bedtime from tomorrow! And no more late nights in the pub for Squeaks Wink

OkieCokie · 05/11/2010 20:30

Mini C was going to bed around 7.00ish from about 8 weeks. I remember it feeling nice to get out evenings back. Dream feed around 10.30 and then up sometime aaround 4.30 for a feed but this pushed back fairly soon I recall. I admit I followed a bit of Gina and a bit of Baby Whisperer to get daytime sleeps and feeds sorted around 4 months and this did help sort the evenings and night times out but I know these routines are not everyones bag.

CurlyCasper · 05/11/2010 20:51

Thanks okie. I've just ordered both those books second hand to assess and take as much or as little as I please from them.

She was getting tired at the bonfire, so did actually go down at about 7.15 tonight. I have been up once to resettle, but she's doing bloody well considering the fireworks going up opposite the bedroom window (poor dog is hiding in a dark corner).

I've just written a schedule I'm going to try tomorrow, using what I have gleaned online about the EASY routine. I'll give it a shot. Pick up, put down has already worked twice today.

Am now fearful of waking her for a feed when I go to bed, but I know she'll need it. Somehow I don't think you're supposed to shove a bottle in while they are lying flat on their backs...

Hope you're feeling ok. Any signs of baybee eviction?

rollerbaby · 05/11/2010 21:26

Er girls. I think I've just had a show or partial show anyways. A good dollop of snot in my gusset. Is this the start? could be days right? how much is a show?

EEEKKKKK.

SilverSky · 05/11/2010 21:26

Evening all,

can anyone reco a book for life with a newborn?

Our little guy (nickname to follow) is lush. However does like the boob. Perhaps bit too much! How do
you know if you are being used as a soother!!?

Poo has now graduated from black to green to chicken korma as of today!!

Buzwams are bloody enormous. Each one is bigger than the baybee's bonce. Tres ridiculous. Think am going to have to go to Millets camping shop for brazier wear (ie : tent)!

MW coming tmw. Fingers xd we pass the tests etc.

Birf story will follow.

Anyone else post preggo find that their tum still feels as though they are hatching!!!!

Happy Friday night!

SilverSky · 06/11/2010 02:06

honey you will be a-laying soon me thinks!

CurlyCasper · 06/11/2010 07:26

Go moo! Hope it's swift and easy from here on in
Everyone has different tales to tell about shows. Mine was more bloody than snotty and I saw it less than 30 hours before Squeaks arrived.

silver Nice to hear about your boob loving boy! Sorry, haven't used any books yet here, just Mumsnet etc. Although I'm going to start looking at some now.

HORRIBLE night here. between about 11pm and 3am she woke every 20-45 mins and cried. But at 6.30am she did her usual smiley wake up. I think we'll both be going down when it comes to morning nap time!

AlpinePony · 06/11/2010 08:26

moo I'm afraid I didn't have that stage but you sound good to go. And finally - proof that fireworks cause baybee-laying! Grin

cunty On your baby sleep words last night I put him down at 8:15 - he refused to go to sleep until around 10. Woke at 1 and crie (softly) for a couple of minutes, woke again at 3:30, re-settled and I got up at 4:45. An improvement I think! (For me anyway). Back to bed and woke again at 8:30! Grin

silv I got the Practical Parenting guide to the first year www.amazon.co.uk/Your-Babys-First-Month---month/dp/0600617165/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1289031913&sr=1-1 - however, by the time I actually got to read it the newborn stage had passed... Wink

curly You poor thing, that sounds horrible. Stiff drinks for mummy today I think!

CUNextTuesday · 06/11/2010 08:32

silver expect to spend much of the next few weeks feeding. This bit is about building up your supply for his needs so although it may appear not much is happening, it's all going on where you can't see it Grin As a rule of thumb, a feed can take an hour and will be every 2-3 hrs FROM THE START OF THE LAST FEED. That last bit was lost on me, I thought I was meant to have a two hour GAP but no.

Cosmosis · 06/11/2010 10:26

Yes what cunty says, for the first few weeks all you will do is feed, don't limit it, it's important for supply. You may well feel like a human dummy, but even that's important for building supply. Still hatching feeling = afterpains, should go in the next few days.

moo yay for shows! I didn't get one till actually having contractions so can't answer question however.

CurlyCasper · 06/11/2010 10:26

got another hour of kip in alps, so I won't be reaching for my newly infused chilli vodka just yet! Squeaks has eaten less than 100ml all morning. But she is farting like a trooper.

I just read an article that suggests 4-5 months is not a good time to start sleep training. Hmm

Am excited for moomin

Cosmosis · 06/11/2010 10:33

Curls that sounds like my Thursday night was, grim :(

I guess 4-5 months not good for sleep training because of the 4month growth spurt and sleep regression?

I have to report some success in the Cos house though. couldn't get him to go to sleep last night downstairs like he usually does (he'd dropped off a couple of times but woken up about 5 mins later). Gave up and decided to go to bed with him. went upstairs, put him in basket, thinking I'd take contacts out, get undressed etc and have to calm him down in a min, but in the meantime, put white noise cd on and closed door (so light off). Went back in a couple of minutes later and he was fast asleep!! So tonight we are going to try doing that at 8.30 after his last feed, which is generally at 8, and see what happens.

My bike ride is now this afternoon not tomorrow.

CurlyCasper · 06/11/2010 11:10

have a good ride cos. I am well impressed with your commitment. And glad he conked out easily last night after such a nasty time on Thurs.

I can finish writing now Squeaks has been wrestled down again. She's so tired. But at least now she has a very obvious, shouty, sleep cue. I always told myself the sleeping through would not last in these early months. But it's still pretty gutting after a whole two months of peaceful nights! Damn, why did she have to get old enough to develop adult sleep patterns Wink

Yup, training during sleep regression is not ideal, but I will try as much as I can, because the longer you leave it, I expect the harder it is.

alps Glad you managed to get a better night thanks to cunty's wise words. Unfortunately I tried ignoring the middle of the night crying and it only escalated. But last night was so out of character I am guessing there was something up - sore tummy or such like.

Dream(ish) feed didn't go too well. Might even have been that which left her with a painful belly, possibly reflux related. So I am going to let Squeaks stay up until 8/8.30ish tonight, without any later feeds, and see if she will sleep through (or at least only need the dummy put back in at some point). Fingers crossed.

Anyway, enough about sleeping (or not) babies. How are you all? Anyone doing anything more exciting than housework this week?

CluckyKate · 06/11/2010 11:25

For every piece of advice on sleep training (and anything else for that matter) you'll find an article that will rubbish it. No two babies are the same so you've just got to go with what you think's best. If it works - great! If it doesn't then try something else.

We were very lucky with DD in that she was a regular feeder from about 6-8 weeks......you could set your watch by her - bang on 4 hours. Never noticed a difference during growth spurts either.
We also started the bedtime routine around 3 months which was a revelation after tolerating weeks of a screaming baby from 6-10 - hadn't occurred to us she would be tired & couldn't/wouldn't sleep downstairs with us Confused. We didn't get her sleeping through until she was on 3 solid meals a day (around 6 months) but did do the Gina Ford no playing, no cuddling, no eye-contact thing for middle of the night feeds which seemed to work in getting her back to sleep quickly.

Anyway, that's what worked for my baby....no idea whether it will work on the next one though.

Good to hear of the expellation of vag-snot Moo - there's movement afoot. Good luck Smile

Great news about the promo [Alps]...sorry the Starbucks thing didn't pan out - very irritating but gave you some good interview practice.

Cosmosis · 06/11/2010 11:31

It's not commitment curls it's for sanity! I have so missed it, I'm very excited Grin

Cosmosis · 06/11/2010 11:32

Oh and also important for da male bonding - am aware I hog DS when we're together as am utterly addicted to him, so is good for TGO to have him on his own. Have been doing my Buttercup impression for ages to get plenty o milk stored up for it!

AlpinePony · 06/11/2010 12:45

The trouble for me at least, is that it takes a few minutes to ascertain whether it's jsut a little grumble or whether he's ramping up for a SCREAM. Because jailbait was working last night I was able to "test" it - wheras normally I'd get up and deal with it rather than waking up Mr. Fucking Grumpy Pants.

Am just back from a horrible trip to the shopping centre/supermarket. Every cunt in Holland is shopping today - had to go to THREE carparks to get a space. Angry Called about 30 people wankers, a few cocksnot's and lots of fucking idiots. Grin My patience with others seems to be waning...

Thank you Kate. It is a shame in a way - but I didn't like the fact that it's "casual dress" to the point of there were a few people in the building whom if you'd seen at a station you'd have assumed they were homeless. I iz big, fat snob in suit.

cossie Hope you have a lovely, lovely time this afternoon.

Cosmosis · 06/11/2010 17:24

oh I did Alpie it was absolutely wonderful Grin

CurlyCasper · 06/11/2010 17:43

Glad to hear it cossie. Sounds fab. Hope the boys had a lovely time too. I wish I had some sort of passion to get back to. Other than eating cake.

Well, I have abandoned the majority of sleep training plans, given that squeaks is firmly in the 4-month "developmental phase" Hmm. I have done loads of reading about it today. She's now waking from most naps crying howling (not finishing sleep cycles). So we are practising getting her down, and back down again, but not following any specific timings.

I'm going offline now; been reading/baby wrestling all afternoon Sad

OkieCokie · 06/11/2010 17:43

Alps many congrats on the promotion! You rock! Shitty news about the non job at the Starbucks gaff (not in Starbucks of course) but hope the promotion makes up for it!

No sign of anything happening here. It is all very dull .

AlpinePony · 06/11/2010 18:06

Am TTC again. [gulp]

curly Have had your friend around today - her mum arrived yesterday bearing contraband: square sausage, potato cakes, mealy pudding & haggis.

OkieCokie · 06/11/2010 19:13

OMG! That is all I can say!
