Alan Johnson?

EdgarAllenPoll · 10/05/2010 17:57

Tory: 36%
Labour: 29%
Lib Dem: 23%

Soooooooo, 52% of the British public voted Lib-Lab

they didn't. they voted labour or liberal.

59% voted lib-con if you want to look at it that way...but it doesn't reflect what happened . this talk of 'progressive majority' is bollocks. whn people voted labour, they didn't vote for some imaginary 'progressive' party...

WetAugust · 10/05/2010 17:57

Oh get real mmeLindt

On that basis we shoudl award Olympic gold to the 2nd and 3rd place high-jumpers as collectively they jumped higher than than the guy who actually did jump the highest.

You Labourites are doing yourselves no favours at all by attempting to cling to power - it'll just make the electorate ensure they boot you well and truly out at the next election - just so you finally get the message

bobthebuddha · 10/05/2010 17:59

This is a fucking shambles. I could spit.

OhBuggerandArse · 10/05/2010 18:00

Listen to the hard-line Labour hacks though - some of them would clearly rather go into opposition than face the thought of having to cooperate with the Nats. I don't think it's even about who's in power as much as everyone having to get their heads round what it might mean to have collaborative rather than confrontational politics.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/05/2010 18:02

I Agree OhBugger. They are hardly acting for the benefit of the country.

MmeLindt · 10/05/2010 18:02

British politics have outgrown the two party electoral system. That is the problem.

My point with the percentages was that no party has a majority, which was going to happen at some point as there are too many parties in UK to stick with the FPTP system.

Germany has PR and the government is formed by the 2 parties who together have the most votes and can work together to form a coalition.

whiffleiseggsauceted · 10/05/2010 18:03

Thank you fembear. Clegg's acting very duplicitous. Wasting 4 days of the conservatives (and nation's) time. This is not the way to negotiate. What a wolly!

WetAugust · 10/05/2010 18:03

It's getting really heavy now. Just watched Adam Boulton and Alistair campbell laying into each other - thought they might actually come to blows

MmeLindt · 10/05/2010 18:03

It is not about clinging to power. It is about not wanting a Tory government who is anathema to my beliefs.

FrakkedUpTheElection · 10/05/2010 18:03

Oh and I totally agree that the Lib Dems needs to prove they can form a coalition and act 'in the national interest'

WetAugust · 10/05/2010 18:04

Your 'beliefes' are obscuring fairness MmeLindt.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/05/2010 18:05

There's nothing wrong with the Tories.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/05/2010 18:08

Alot of people have had to endure a Labour government, I can't see people who support the conservatives bitching and complaining about Labour, I can, however, see alot of Labour supporters moaning about how terrible the Conservatives are without producing any evidence at all to support their claim other then to say that they are crap etc.

I am a conservative and proud to be one. I have not moaned since the Labour party took over so shut the hell up will you, it's pathetic.

Madsometimes · 10/05/2010 18:09

If Labour had more seats than the Tories then as a Lib Dem voter, I would say go with them. The uncomfortable truth is that Labour has far fewer votes and seats than the Tories. They have no mandate, but it seems that they will cling on to power and disregard fairness.

I have lost all respect for NC if he joins this "Rainbow Coalition." What a mess.

MmeLindt · 10/05/2010 18:13

It is not about fairness.

Why should lib dems enter into a coalition with a party whose ideals and policies are not compatible with their own? That is not going to work.

They have to enter into a coalition with a party with whom they can govern. No use if they form a coalition and it breaks down because the two parties cannot work together.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/05/2010 18:16

It would be wrong to say that Labour listens though, how can a party who clearly (tuition fees/Iraq) don't listen to the people who elected them be trusted to work with another party? If the lib dems join them it will be a huge mistake.

Fairness and Conservative, eh no can't make it work - oxymoron I think.

Liberal Parliamentary party were happy enough with the idea of a Conservative alliance however when they started pushing for details on how it would actually work it all appeared to fall to bits - i.e. the Tories were offering a few crumbs and assuming that Nick Clegg would play along. Rumbled I think!

WetAugust · 10/05/2010 18:18

Let the Rainbow Tossers get on with it.

Within a year we'll have a landslide Tory Govt as noone will vote Lib Dem again

WinkyWinkola · 10/05/2010 18:19

Don't you think Liberal voters are more likely to vote Labour than Tory? Given the choice.

Triggles · 10/05/2010 18:19

Nick Clegg is beginning to get slammed on television news though. He is changing his goalposts and going back on what he said previously. News claims he is now having a "dutch auction." I think he may find his credibility falling at this.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 10/05/2010 18:21

How's Labour fair gomez? You can't seriously think that they will take any of the Lib dems policies on board, they don't even listen to their electorate.

WetAugust · 10/05/2010 18:22

Winky - the Lib Dems are a very braos spectrum ranging from those whose 2nd vote would be Tory and those whose 2nd vote would be Lab - however they do frequently attempt to calim the 'moral ground' and denying the laregst party office by siding with the Labs will split them right down the middle.

getthewineinthefridge · 10/05/2010 18:23

It can't be Ed Balls, need a dead cert seat for leader/PM and he only has a majority of about one and a half now.
