Oops, I'll try that again -

Telegraph on the phone call between Brown and Clegg www.telegraph.co.uk/news/election-2010/7695794/General-Election-2010-Gordon-Brown-launched-telephone -rant-at-Nick-Clegg.html.

They give more detail and suggest that the source was one of the team negotiating for the Lib Dems.

Hello there
Have been offline for 16 hours (!) and haven't seen much news, but interesting points on the thread.
Personally, I don't think Lib/Lab govnt deal is credible/desirable. As I said yesterday, Clegg and Brown unlikely to be able to work together on a personal level. Gordon really must go, but can't until there is a clear path forward.
All depends on whether Cameron can deliver a referendum on PR. If not, LD will probably provide more limited support to a minority govnt.
Anyway, I think I'm going to have to either rejoin the labour party or some other PR campaign movement - time to become active again!

The big imponderable for me is who the queen would think has the best chance of making a government work.

I guess it comes down to what the cabinet secretary says, and I don't think we'll ever know the specifics of that!

4000 posts in 4 days must be approaching a MN record.

MarionCole · 08/05/2010 16:35

5,000 even

The "Pondering, and while slightly more optimistic than we once were, still really quite unhappy Lefty thread" ?

PfftThePinkoLeftyDragon · 08/05/2010 16:38

David Cameron was quite clear in his speech at 2:30 yesterday that they would be happy to look at change in the voting system as far as changing boundaries to mean equal constituency sizes, in a FIRST PAST THE POST system. He seemed very clear on that point and to me, he was saying no to PR.

nearlytoolate · 08/05/2010 16:39

I think Labour should stop telling NC what to do - it will only backfire!

I don't understand why people are still trying to muster up a progressive majority for PR - it seems very clear to me that Clegg has no intention of working with Labour.

DavidHameron · 08/05/2010 16:42

I like Hassled's suitably vague title.

Len, I have just CATed you...

I agree - but maybe it would be better for Clegg not to insist on a PR referendum under the Tories (which, let's face it, will never be allowed to succeed), but wait until such time Lib and Lab can really work on it together - i.e. work towards a jointly agreed proposal for the next election.

MrJustAbout · 08/05/2010 16:56

Pondering leftie thread ---

Well, when I read the "depressed lefty red eye" I immediately thought it was an oblique reference to the prime minister :-)

ilovemydogandMrBrown · 08/05/2010 16:57

ooh lenin what kind of takeaway? Am contemplating a thai, but they don't deliver. The indian one does, but minimum order means I'd order waaayyy too much.

Re: Nick Clegg. Wonder if it's a bluff. He has no intention of working with Tories, but would be in better bargaining position with GB?

Beachcomber · 08/05/2010 16:59

Slightly OT but am PMSL at all the English Tories stamping their feet and saying 'snot fair' that the Scottish vote has scuppered things for them.

They can blame Thatcher (and our unfair voting system which they weirdly still endorse) for that.

TDiddy · 08/05/2010 17:01

ilovemydogobama whether he is bluffing or not he will soon find out that he will split the party and still end up with no PR if he takes the ConLib route.

From a Tory point of view DC should also avoid the mess as well or atleast not give away PR.

From a Labour point of view: they should wait until they are the only option or best of all, not get involved at all.

TDiddy · 08/05/2010 17:04

Labour is really winding up LibDem supporters:

"Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw insisted Mr Brown could stay in No 10 in a coalition deal, telling the Today programme: "It would be inconceivable to me for the Liberal Democrats to sign up to anything that fell short of a guarantee of a referendum on reform of the voting system."

nearlytoolate · 08/05/2010 17:05

I agree but I think you are under-estimating the extent to which the Libs will be desperate for power and to prove they can make a coalition work.
And, the numerous examples of Lib/Tory alliances at local level. Libs are not nearly as close or well disposed towards labour as we would like to think.

ImSoNotTelling · 08/05/2010 17:06

Been out just got back

What's occuring?
