I thought Brown couldn't resign now.

Can he resign as leader of party but not (yet) as PM.

Could be a solution that would appeal to Nick. Risky though.

Tebbit on News24 now.

I fancy AJ far more than the Milibands, and I do mean in that way. That's a bit sad.

As a leader, i don't think either Miliband is ready, and think Ed marginally nicks it as he's more human than the robotic David.

But both, ultimately, leader material.

Think we should stage a femmo demo in favour of Harman though.

policywonk · 08/05/2010 15:37

Bye BIWI, have a good one

Ed has ruled himself out many times - wouldn't take on his own brother and reckons he's too inexperienced. I'd like to see him as Labour leader a few years down the line, I think he's mostly a good egg and very plausible/convincing

I think it's possible for GB to step down as leader while still being PM - the whole point would be to make a LibLab deal more likely (because Clegg has signalled fairly strongly that he wouldn't 'prop up' Brown as PM)

Hassled · 08/05/2010 15:39

BBC are saying "The Conservative and Lib Dem negotiation teams will meet again at 1100 BST on Sunday and there will be a meeting of Conservative MPs at 1800 BST on Monday, the BBC understands."

So we have a good couple days of speculation ahead. I don't think my nerves are up to it. I'm coming round to the Cons minority gov option being the best bet in the medium to long term.

I like Johnson - he would lead well, but agree that a Miliband would probably have more popular appeal. I still maintain that Gordon would be bloody impressive as leader in opposition.

DavidHameron · 08/05/2010 15:39

Tebbit supporting minority govt. Of course: the Tories know this will lead to a Queen's Speech that labour and libs will HAVE to support: they've got no money to fight a quick election so they'll bank on them NOT voting it down...?

policywonk · 08/05/2010 15:40

I'd love HH but it would be electoral cyanide - she's possibly the only senior Labour politician who is as widely disliked as Brown

Nymphadora · 08/05/2010 15:40

Dh wants Jack Straw as leader he thinks we need 'statesman' rather than 'charmer'

have told him about mrjustabout and that he needs to join

what's he saying???

MrJustAbout · 08/05/2010 15:46

Policywonk:

BBC microsite 1358
Labour dismisses Alex Salmond's suggestion of a "progressive alliance", saying the possibility of the nationalists and Labour working together was "a desperate attempt by Alex Salmond to make himself look relevant after a terrible general election result".

... and yes, Gordon Brown could go to the Queen to resign as soon as arrangements were made for a govt. Until then, he remains PM - and I don't even think he needs to be head of the labour party to remain as such.

As long as the LDs know he's not there, and the new Labour leader is part of negotiations, I don't think there's a massive logistical issue.

Nymphadora.

Ouchie.

TDiddy · 08/05/2010 15:48

Nymphadora- Compeltely agree that jack Straw would be perfect for Lib-Lab coalition. If no coalition then need to go for a young charmer. I also like Yvette Cooper but she might not be ready and her hubby is a liability.
