Just had to get that off my chest.

Please come and join me if you feel the same, and then I can stop annoying myself (and others) by hijacking the anti-Tory threads.

Just because you're obese doesn't mean you're undernourished! You can get obsese by eating mars bars and fish and chips every day. Not much nourishment in that. What absolute rubbish you're talking, ninny. Sorry, I meant ninna.

And child poverty soared under the Tories and we had two recessions and one of the very first things Thatcher did was to give massive tax breaks to the super rich.

Christ. I'm certainly not going to vote Labour but if you're going to vote Tory at least don't spout shite about how great the Thatcher years were. They were great for the very few. Most struggled very very hard.

WilfSell · 05/05/2010 13:20

There were no undernourished children when free school milk was stopped? What nonsense. Many children today still have to go to school with no breakfast. That is why it is still subsidised for under 5s, and for those on free school meals.

ItsGrimUpNorth · 05/05/2010 13:21

I meant of course just because one is obese it means you are well nourished. I was just so amazed at the rubbish on previous post.

Jac44 · 05/05/2010 13:22

If we ignore history we are are condemned to repeat it. Throughout the twentieth century the Conservative Party opposed every move to improve the conditions of working people. In each case following the implementation of the progressive policy and its popularity the Conservative opposition became support, but the party has never been innovative or pro-active in improving the conditions of the great majority of the British public.

Old Age pensions were introduced by the Liberal Government elected in 1906 and their introduction was delayed by vehement opposition from the Conservatives. The National Health Service thought up by a Liberal and implemented by the 1945 Labour Government was strongly opposed by the Conservative Party. The minimum wage introduced by the 1997 Labour Government was strongly opposed by the Conservatives. There is no reason to think that 'the stupid party' has changed in the twenty first century.
In fact they continue to hate EU social legislation which gives evryone an entitlement to paid leave and protection against being forced to work excessive hours by exploitative employers. As the great Winston Churchill (yes a Tory) said about employment legislation, it's needed to protect good emplyers from bad employers and bad employers from the even worse.

Labour or Lib Dem or Green, - I don't care but please do not vote Conservative for a return to the 1980s!

vintage · 05/05/2010 13:37

oh yes cant wit for the foxhunting to start back up

Beachcomber · 05/05/2010 13:57

Ah I see TheHeathenOfSuburbia has got there first with the article on Hammersmith and Fulham.

Genuine question for those who want to wake up to a Conservative government on Friday; what do you think of what has been done in this flagship council?

I have to go out soon but I would be very interested to read some reactions from MNers who actively support this style of governing.

Repost of link in case anyone missed it.

skihorse · 05/05/2010 15:13

Me too vintage, it's been sorely missed!

kaylasmum · 05/05/2010 16:29

antoinetteOuradi So are you trying to tell me that everyone who votes knows all the ins and outs of the party they are voting for? And where did you see me mention that i'm voting for Labour? I'm not, i'm voting SNP. Don't speak to me like i'm some illiterate fool just because i'm not heavily into politics. And for your information tax credits are not benefits. I know enough about the tories to make an informed decision not to vote for them, never have, never will!

To be perfectly honest i think all politicians are as bad as each other.

AntoinetteOuradi · 05/05/2010 16:58

Sorry, Kaylasmum, my mistake.

I just felt cross about the idea of someone saying they have no interest in politics unless it directly affects them once every five years.

I am feeling very jittery today. I will be so unspeakably depressed on Friday if it's a hung parliament (I think Labour are pretty much dead and buried as the majority party, but a hung parliament is not impossible).

Jac44, if we're talking about history, let's remember the historical joys of hung parliaments...

ItsGrimUpNorth: my experience of the Thatcher era was not of people struggling. Far from it. Yours was of people struggling. Both were true then. Both are true now. But in the economic situation now, I think we will all struggle more if the Conservatives don't get in.

I need a lie down.

This comment by Jackiepaper on Sunday has helped me (finally) make my decision about who I plan to vote for tomorrow.

"Just about sums up Tory voters really. The attitude of 'I'm voting tory because they will make my life better for me.' As opposed to the majority of Labour voters who vote Labour because they believe they will make life better for the majority of people in our society"

expatinscotland · 05/05/2010 17:14

'Although I would hate to emigrate I fear alot of hardworking people may well just do that if Conservatives don't get in.'

Because no one else really works hard, do they?

And LMAO at all these people threatening to move overseas.

Bye, then! Especially if you go to N. America, you'll fit right in because the prevailing attitude is that if you don't like a place, then get out.

It's an empty threat there, 'Well, if you don't do what we want, we'll emmigrate.' Try that on over there! Haahaaa. You'll get 'Don't let the door hit you on the way out!'

How arrogant to ever assume you can't be replaced by someone else just as good if not better.

bruffin · 05/05/2010 17:28

As opposed to the majority of Labour voters who vote Labour because they believe they will make life better for the majority of people in our society"

Most of the labour voters on here are complaining about losing their tax credits/sure start etc.

abdnhiker · 05/05/2010 17:44

expat N. America includes Canada too which is far more socialist than the United States. I grew up in Canada where there is the equivalent of the NHS, where there is a strong state to help people, and where poverty levels are, I believe, better. Funny thing is that Canada doesn't run a deficit when times are good. We can be fiscally and morally responsible at the same time.

I love it here (we're in scotland too) and even though the cost of living is high and our jobs are uncertain, we're not planning on leaving regardless of who gets into power. We're here to stick it out.

And I'm voting conservative - which will financially hurt us as a family (Lib Dems have by far the best policy for us and for anyone in the tax bracket between £50-100K) but I believe we can't keep going with this level of spending. I am prepared to pay more personally in taxes (as long as we stay employed) to help those who need it, but I don't support Labour's spending policies (including child trust fund, child benefit for families like mine etc).

abdnhiker · 05/05/2010 17:46

tiredemma Can I get a badge? "I'm voting Tory which will not help me personally but I think will help the country get out of so much debt?" Because not all of us are voting Tory for ourselves and it's a bit of an insulting simplification to say so.

SanctiMoanyArse · 05/05/2010 17:49

If lots of people emigrate th jobs shortage is sorted anyway

Excellent

If you're heading off from S E Wales and have a frad job in school hours I will chuck a tenner in the pot

expatinscotland · 05/05/2010 17:50

'expat N. America includes Canada too which is far more socialist than the United States.'

Um, yes, I know that. I'm from America originally. There are also many Canadians on this board.

abdnhiker · 05/05/2010 17:51

I'm sure you do expat, but see your 17:14 comment.

expatinscotland · 05/05/2010 17:53

Um, I don't need to see it. I wrote it.

Attitude of 'don't like it, off you go' still prevails.

skihorse · 05/05/2010 18:16

abdnhiker You could also get badges from the same range which read:

"I'm voting Tory because I understand the credit card is maxed and the UK cannot borrow any more".

OR

"Where the fuck do you get the idea that people who support Conservative beliefs hate people?"

OR

"I'm voting Tory because I'm not living in cloud cuckoo land."

OR

"I just want people to start taking responsibility for themselves." (no party name mentioned - maybe a logo of someone throwing their hands up in the air and rolling their eyes? )

Beachcomber · 05/05/2010 18:22

No takers for commenting on the Conservative flagship council of Hammersmith and Fulham then?

Go on I hoped somebody would have something to say that would reassure me.

ZephirineDrouhin · 05/05/2010 18:25

Apparently not. Well I guess that's another "fuck the poor" from the Tories then.

WilfSell · 05/05/2010 18:39

bruffin,

Nope. I'm complaining about other people losing their tax credits and Surestart centres actually.

That's the key ideological difference, as people keep pointing out.

b4real · 05/05/2010 18:58

I hope the Tories win, and if they do, I'll be raising a glass or two.

AntoinetteOuradi · 05/05/2010 19:11

Why has this thread been so comprehensively hijacked by anti-Tories?

I started it so that we could have somewhere to go where we weren't bothering the lefties (I have, as you lefties might notice, left your threads alone since starting this one).

I take my hat off to the valiant posters on here who are keeping our end up in the face of prejudice and, sometimes, downright nastiness.

Skihorse, I could wear any of your badges!

All I can add now is that if the Conservatives do win, I will not be gloating. I will just be utterly, unspeakably, quietly glad.

OP posts:
skihorse · 05/05/2010 19:18

I'm not sure I'll be "glad" antoinette - the country/economy is so unbelievably fucked that of course cuts will need to be made. Unfortunately the bloody idiots who cannot see this will say that the Tories were out to ruin their lives and we'll have to listen to the same old crap for the next 20 years. None so blind as those who cannot see of course.

I just cannot understand how so many just don't understand the position we're in. Free money, free money, come and get yer free money!
