...on the grounds that if we assume there will be a Tory govt, then the crowing triumphalism of all the Chinless Wonders and Thrusting Monetarists and Nasty Racists who'll poke in here to crow and gloat, will somehow force a cosmic rift in the time-space continuum. And it will be like 1992 all over again but the other way round.

I fear the best we can hope for is a hung parliament.

I've suggested hemlock for the Election Night supper thread...

Oi, I hate Murdoch, am voting tactically and am voting Lib Dem

Heathcliffscathy · 02/05/2010 22:58

kosovo is pretty much unforgiveable as well really, certainly in terms of not having a mandate (nice one tony)...only difference is that we didn't go in and occupy a sovereign nation and that the consequences haven't been as calamatously disastrous as iraq.

still a flagrant, arrogant disrespect for international law.

onebatmother · 02/05/2010 22:59

Yes, understood, of course Soph.

Janos · 02/05/2010 22:59

animula.

Clegg seems to have cast himself in the role of kingmaker (can you tell history was my favourite subject at school?).

I'm trying not to care about it all too much but the habit of lifetime is hard to break.

Hassled · 02/05/2010 22:59

Over here too. I'm depressed as hell. And I feel guilty - I should have done more. I shoudl have joined the local party; I should have leafletted and actually done something.

There's much about Labour I dislike, but ultimately I think Brown is a decent, honourable man of conviction, and the alternatives are too dreadful to contemplate.

Heathcliffscathy · 02/05/2010 23:00

onebat, we're going to get a hung parliament and a second election shortly thereafter.

DC and co just do not have the support that the Sun and the disgraceful yougov would have you believe!

clemette · 02/05/2010 23:01

I remember the Tories "balancing the books" - selling off Council housing and then raising the interest rates so astronomically so my mum, who bought one, couldn't pay her mortgage and we were reposessed. Can't wait to have those good times back...

Wonder who the fat-cat bankers voted for each and every time. Excellent insight to blame the government

Hassled · 02/05/2010 23:01

And can I share that DS1, a soon-to-be History graduate, postal-voted Lib Dem purely because of the interesting historical parallels with the 1929 election? I've ranted at him extensively.

Heathcliffscathy · 02/05/2010 23:02

and you know what, if your fears are justified it is new fucking bastarding labour who have delivered it to you on a plate.

claig · 02/05/2010 23:02

I'm glad you think that because most liberals and socialists think it was fine to ignore international law and attack sovereign states on the pretext of human rights. The Liberals were four square behind that.

magentadreamer · 02/05/2010 23:02

At least if they do get a small majority we'll all be able to shout TORYS OUT again. DAVE, DAVE,DAVE OUT OUT OUT just doesn't have the same ring as MAGGIE MAGGIE MAGGIE OUT OUT OUT.

try's to look on the bright side of a very big black hole

Janos · 02/05/2010 23:03

Very true magenta..

Heathcliffscathy · 02/05/2010 23:04

hassled he is a good lad. well done him.

i love all the squealing ranting about the dangers and doom of hung/coalition govt in the voldemort papers: same coalition that sorted the nazis out then?

ZephirineDrouhin · 02/05/2010 23:04

atlantis - no of course not inappropriate at all. Free speech and all that. Might make you look a bit thick though.

Have you all seen this re Murdoch and the Lib Dems?

mollybob · 02/05/2010 23:05

signing in sadly

but won't be as bad as 1992 as I was devestated then - am older and wiser now

Heathcliffscathy · 02/05/2010 23:06

i do love that zepherine. it tickles me pink that he might on some micro level be having a squirm.

onebatmother · 02/05/2010 23:07

But you are wrong Sophable, if you think I have swallowed a Murdoch line (ffs!)

I don;t believe that socialism is a likely future outcome, no. That doesn't mean I am cynical.

Nick Clegg is not a socialist, is he?

He is an excellent man with some excellent ideas, which most progressives would like to put into effect. But

TA - NAH! There's not enough money for them! And when you have to decide between this good thing and that good thing, it all looks a bit different. And the best that it looks, after all those social justice decisions have been made, as well as the 'breaking-new-ground' fuckups, is like it looks right now. Like 13 years of Labour government, like a country INFINITELY better to live in, for all of us, than the 14-years-ago one.

Heathcliffscathy · 02/05/2010 23:07

and you know, what if it is the mn election. 900 plus is a nice sample size. if libdems get 42% of popular vote, then we've got electoral reform.

Hassled · 02/05/2010 23:07

A Lib/Lab coalition would be interesting, and would have potential. It needn't be disastrous. In theory.

I just don't think that's where we'll be. Conservatives need a 40% vote share for the 326 - they're dangerously close, and they're taking it from Labour.

BonzoDoodah · 02/05/2010 23:07

It's all very interesting your argument sophable but can't you just leave us to wallow in our presumed misery? The party you want is next door .....

atlantis · 02/05/2010 23:09

How come none of you lefties were against Murdoch when he supported Labour?

Don't shout now, just asking.

Heathcliffscathy · 02/05/2010 23:09

you see i don't agree that it is infinitely better (not least cause i can't look the rest of the world in the eye) at all. nor do i believe for a second that this is the best we can do.

not for a second.

does that make me hopeless and naive fool woman?

Molesworth · 02/05/2010 23:09

Agree with Hassled: a lib-lab coalition could be A Good Thing. But that's not looking at all likely is it?

Janos · 02/05/2010 23:09

Very interesting article Zephirine.

David Yelland..who knew eh?

That said, NC has openly stated he will join forces with DC (Guardian on Sat)so much as the idea of a lib lab pact raises hope...think it's very unlikely.

alysonpeaches · 02/05/2010 23:09

I remember the tories only too well. When Maggie got in I had just got married. I can also remember sitting through every 9 o clock news during the Falklands war. I remember the clashes between miners and police on tv in the 80s, living across from a miner and his wife, both the same age as me, I remember they got thinner and thinner then they had their home repossessed. That really brought it home to me. Then another two houses on the street, couples my age, had their homes repossessed and it all became extremely depressing.

I remember mortgage rates going through the roof, they were in double figures, I can actually remember getting the letters from the BS and thinking it cant get any higher and thinking what we could cut back on to make sure the mortgage got paid. We really did struggle to make ends meet and we didnt have as many outgoings as we have today. We got through it all but it was a depressing time to live through and not a nice time to be a young wife and mother. I dont want to take a step backwards.

I keep deleting this, but Im going to post it this time, because it really was shit under the tories, we dont want to go there again.
