...on the grounds that if we assume there will be a Tory govt, then the crowing triumphalism of all the Chinless Wonders and Thrusting Monetarists and Nasty Racists who'll poke in here to crow and gloat, will somehow force a cosmic rift in the time-space continuum. And it will be like 1992 all over again but the other way round.

I fear the best we can hope for is a hung parliament.

I've suggested hemlock for the Election Night supper thread...

Everyone keep thinking positively. There are 2 more days to go. Any number of cock ups that David Cameron could make . I am out dropping leaflets for Lib Dems tonight (having said that, I've been doing it since 1997 and has had no effect in this area yet )... and my brother was out doing the villages nearby today. It's just a case of making people realise that a vote for Lib Dems or Labour isn't wasted. The second we give in and accept the Cons, the less people will vote and the less people will fight. We can not let this happen!!

happikidz · 04/05/2010 19:17

Both labour and lib dems will need help getting the vote out, especially if it rains

WilfSell · 04/05/2010 19:30

Youtube version of speech: inspiration!

Is it pathetic that I had tears in me eyes when I watched that?

WilfSell · 04/05/2010 19:33

Monkeysavingexpert, I think we need another thread on just that theme to freak out all the Tories.

And I think I might steal it for some tweeting... I know you won't hold it against me

staranise · 04/05/2010 19:36

God, it's just hit me that the Tories really might swing it - can't believe I've been so complacent. I live in a marginal (current MP is Tory, was always Labour up until the last election, 1500 votes between them, both strong candidates) and yet there's been almost no sign of the Labour campaign round here.

Feels like a return to the Dark Ages...

staranise · 04/05/2010 19:36

Might have to join the Party...

CanNeverDecide · 04/05/2010 19:38

I don't think the tory tax break for married couples is intended to make those who have lost their husbands/wives for any reason feel bad. I have always seen it as an incentive for people to get together and stay together, which of course every kid would love and probably does help them to have a more stable upbringing than swinging from mum to dad and back again (been there, done that).

Also, re the CTC, the whole point is that we are coming out of the deepest recession known and there is a massive budget deficit at the moment which needs repaying. That money has to come from somewhere and it is entirely sensible that people who don't really 'need' the CTC or the CTF can do without it for a while whilst the economy is being sorted out. DC has clearly stated that any household under £50k will still get their CTC. For example, our household would quite easily survive without either of these government handouts, and I would be happy to go without in order for our economy and country to be able to recover. Stop being selfish, all of you!

At the end of the day, this country has gone down the pan under a labour government, sorry to say it. Political correctness, immigration, schooling, crime etc. are just examples of this. For goodness' sake, I am Indian (born and brought up here) and I used to be so proud of being British, but now I just cringe when you walk down a street in London and can hardly hear any English, or when you drive through Leicester and see fully clad young girls exiting their faith school. There have been too many concessions under this government, a giving away of our British heritage and history.

If you want that back, if you want to be proud of this country again, the only thing to do is get Labour out.

The Tories are a good bet and have my vote all the way. They are not the same party as Thatcher's was, and will do well for all in this country as well as the country itself.

I am so worried about people, particularly after reading many of these comments, who are planning to vote without the full facts. It's your childrens' future.

Or do you want them to be learning English as a second language at school in a class of 50 whilst watching the teacher being sworn at and a group of hoodies with knives walking down the road, all the time calling Christmas lights, holiday lights and singing baa baa woolly sheep instead of baa baa black sheep, and seeing more people laying about doing nothing because they can, because it's so easy to claim benefits from this government whilst sitting on your ass and laughing at them?

policywonk · 04/05/2010 19:39

Re. monkey's post - always worth phoning the party of your choice and offering to help transport people to the polling station.

fairylights · 04/05/2010 19:40

haven't managed to read all the posts on this thread but very relieved that there are others out there who feel similarly depressed/terrifed of what may come after friday..
esp the thought of george osbourne having any kind of power.. or any of them at all actually do think they are likely to bollocks it all up very rapidly though, but hopefully not at the expense of all of our health and children'd education...aaargh!

auberginesrus · 04/05/2010 19:41

Policywonk think you must have me confused with someone else (I usually lurk on the politics threads )

Unless it was that post on the world book day thread?

fairylights · 04/05/2010 19:43

canneverdecide do you look back on the 1980/90's with fond memories then?

staranise · 04/05/2010 19:44

CanNeverDecide, you have just reminded me why I will never ever vote Tory.

WilfSell · 04/05/2010 19:45

Arf at CanNeverDecide. Oooooh, yes, you're going to sway all us hardened centre Lefties, ex- or even still-Trots and former Tankies with yer Daily Mail talk of 'heritage going down the pan'. We're easily persuaded by that kind of stuff I can tell you .

I'm cheering up by the minute.

In my opinion the married persons tax allowance is a prime example of a nanny state. Get married and we'll throw you some dough. Nice.
Social engineering and state engineering the Tory way. Bunch of bloody nazis.

taffetacat · 04/05/2010 20:07

canneverdecide - bugger off back to the Tory threads, there's a love

PfftTheMagicDragon · 04/05/2010 20:08

I don't think marriage is a political issue. Sorry for coming across all Harriet Harman, but there it is.

Bribing people to get/stay married (and a shit bribe at that) is a bizarre idea and simply serves to perpetuate the right wing idea that the only proper family is one man, one woman, two children (and secretly, they would be nicely Arian as well).

I couldn't give a shit whether people, of any sex or colour, get married at all, and I certainly don't want any government of mine throwing money away trying to make people comply to their set of morals. Children want love and security, they have no concept of marriage and what it means.

CND's criticism of PCness is laughable. The leaps taken towards an accepting society under Labour are massive. All right wing parties are out for the interests of the middle class, white, working male. They can try and make you think that they are all about Britain, and preserving Britishness, but give it a few months and things will start to change. The Tories opposed the Race Relations Act for a start!

"Or do you want them to be learning English as a second language at school in a class of 50 whilst watching the teacher being sworn at and a group of hoodies with knives walking down the road, all the time calling Christmas lights, holiday lights and singing baa baa woolly sheep instead of baa baa black sheep, and seeing more people laying about doing nothing because they can, because it's so easy to claim benefits from this government whilst sitting on your ass and laughing at them? "

You talk about voting without all the facts, but this snippet of your post sounds like bits cut and pasted from the Daily Mail!

TBH, you sound like a BNP voter to me.

roundwindow · 04/05/2010 20:14

Signing in from a safe Tory seat . Do you think it's worth implementing my plan to go and 'edit' the humungous Tory 'vote for change' posters on our local bypass? (my plan is to try to print out letters on my computer to change it to 'vote for child poverty') Will it make any difference? Do pompous equestrian old Tory types have consciences that could be pricked in this way?

RussAbbotDancer · 04/05/2010 20:20

Signing in.

CanNeverDecide reads like the work of a Tory Social Media Campaign Intern.

I'm depressed: Aren't the Tories benefitting from a complete lack of understanding of political philosophy? How can a person say they "were going to vote Lib Dem but Clegg is too smooth" (R2 phone-in today) so vote Tory? Don't fundamental views on civil liberties, redistribution of wealth, welfare state, etc, anchor a person to one general side of the political spectrum? Where did people get the idea that it doesn't?

That said with Clegg playing the hung parliament prospect tactically, he is encouraging potential Tory voters to feel okay about voting LD.

And I think his refusal to work with GB isn't a refusal to work with Labour - it's pretty much a guarantee (as I see it) that if the LDs can choose their party, they'll opt for L on the condition that GB is out. I think GB's "I'll take responsibility" quote today suggests L will go for it.

DownyEmerald · 04/05/2010 20:21

CND - ridiculous - I'm always suprised that there are people who actually think that stuff. Have to keep reminding myself that that is why there are Conservatives.

From a Labour marginal here - hoping our MP gets re-elected, boundary changes in favour, and a good bloke, but am increasingly depressed at the prospect of a Tory win all over. Praying for a hung parliament...

CatIsSleepy · 04/05/2010 20:30

am not depressed, am eagerly anticipating a lib-lab coalition

cannot contemplate the tories winning, so obv it's not going to happen

PfftTheMagicDragon · 04/05/2010 20:36

roundwindow - the vandalised tory billboards FB group has a "VOTE FOR FLANGE"

Bellebelle · 04/05/2010 20:44

"Things Can Only Get Better" came on the radio at the weekend and I cried! I was at Uni in 1997 and I remember how excited all the students and lecturers were at the time, it felt like a new world.

I am in denial that the Tories might get in, 1997 was the first general election I was able to vote at so I've never been in the position of having a government in power which I didn't support.

I think it will be a Lib Dem/Lab coalition though, I don't think the Lib Dems could sleep at night if they did a deal with the Tories!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 04/05/2010 20:47

The suspicious minds one is good, but these are my favourites:

refusing cock

Toryspotting

CanNeverDecide · 04/05/2010 20:49

LOL! One thing's for sure, I'm not taking it as seriously as some of you guys!

I'm Indian, so BNP not really an option for me.

Just pointing out the problems with today's society.

I'll leave you labour losers to it, then, and bugger off back to my mansion... lol!
