...on the grounds that if we assume there will be a Tory govt, then the crowing triumphalism of all the Chinless Wonders and Thrusting Monetarists and Nasty Racists who'll poke in here to crow and gloat, will somehow force a cosmic rift in the time-space continuum. And it will be like 1992 all over again but the other way round.

I fear the best we can hope for is a hung parliament.

I've suggested hemlock for the Election Night supper thread...

Thanks, TC, Molesworth and PF.

Glad I'm not the only one having 1980s flashbacks ... solidarity and all that .

ImSoNotTelling · 04/05/2010 15:47

Just hopping in to share the gloom - I knew our constiuency was tory tory tory but just looked on BBC and it has been tory non-stop since 1950

why bother voting?

ImSoNotTelling · 04/05/2010 15:48

We don't appear to have any natural law types or monster raving loonies or anything like that this time either.

No fun at all

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/05/2010 15:54

Builde - your post is spot on.

WHAT the bloody hell does the conservtive front bench know about the lives of normal workimg people in this country. Absolutely naff all. Unless you are the type of person who lives a Sunday Times colour supplement life, you are not going to be considered by these people.

builde i'd disagree tbh - plenty of people in less comfortable places want change but are voting for the BNP or UKIP instead. It's quite interesting to see the right wing vote so split for once.

i suppose i'm influenced by the number of lads I have gone out with/married whose entire male families spent evenings in the Conservative Club bemoaning the fact that good old Enoch never really got a hearing.

taffetacat · 04/05/2010 17:05

Imsonottelling - depressing to be in such a Tory safe seat. Our constituency has been Tory since it was created in 1885 - with the exception of one year 1923/4 when it was Liberal.

Makes me want to move.

PinkFuschia - you're right about Rifkind (alas). Apparently the tories have been out in force in north Kensington: wouldn't look good if Dave's home ward stayed labour

Sessypoos · 04/05/2010 17:14

Hello, seems Im a little late to this thread, but I just want to say
NO NO NO!!!
Dont get depressed!!!! Get out there - work out who has the best chance of beating your local tories and help them out, put up a poster, talk to all your friends and make sure they all get out and vote.

If you are in a conservative stronghold, then vote Lib Dem - its a vote for reform to ensure your vote will count in future, and there are already many examples of strongly conservative areas that turned completely yellow!

Come on, the time for this sort of thread is after the election, not before when you can still do something about it.

xxx (vote vote vote)

meandjoe · 04/05/2010 17:16

Agree completely with Sessypoos. The thought of what could/ will happen under the Conservatives is terrifying. We can't give up!

ArcticRoll · 04/05/2010 17:18

Agree Sessypoos-it's not over yet-I have been delivering leaflets and plan to spend all day tomorrow canvassing.

Irritatingly, we are midway between two large towns - the Tory stronghold I mentioned and the other a top 15 key marginal Cons/Lab. If I were 2 miles down the road.......

AppleTreeWick · 04/05/2010 17:42

well am back from the school run and am less depressed...the labour candidate was at the gate handing out stickers etc so I didn't have to drag dd1 limping to the office to pick up a poster (serendipity 1), energised we put up poster (with two flowers) DD1'd first political act (weeps with joy) Sadly it does unfortunately resemble a roadside memorial for the poor candidate but never mind. So energised (2) I joined the labour party online then then about two hours later a very nice man is on the phone explaining how I can get out the vote by phone from my own recliner! God I love the t'interweb.

ApT putting the manic in depression

8rubberduckies · 04/05/2010 18:23

this is a fab website if you're still unsure who you will be voting for on Thursday. You can also follow a link and type in your postcode to find out how your views on local issues compare to your local candidates' views.

WilfSell · 04/05/2010 18:45

Wow. This hit a nerve. Just to say my OP was in NO WAY intended to induce apathy and especially not to discourage voting. I think everyone should exercise whatever anti -tory vote they can (so long as it isn't a fascist vote obviously)

And I am really hoping for a Kinnock effect - smug gits read this, think it's in the bag conveniently forgetting the 5% margin of error in the polls and fail to vote themselves. And Brown's speech was brilliant and I'm hopeful it would have stirred a few old labour types to rethink away from the anti-war stance etc. And can we get someone to sort out the weather? Though can never remember if it's sun or rain the favours labour.

Which is a bit of a drawback, clearly.

lol roadside memorial

gingercat12 · 04/05/2010 18:58

I heard DH pleading with parents "At least do not vote Tory, please."

Sessypoos You are probably right.

ImSoNotTelling · 04/05/2010 19:02

I was only joking.

I love a good vote, me

Scorpia · 04/05/2010 19:09

A Conservative win would be a disaster for women. The majority of cuts that they propose eg.to Child Tax credit, Child Trust Fund, and the means-testing of Child benefit would take money away from women and children, whilst their proposed married couples tax allowance would for the most part go to men.Since the majority of teachers and teaching assistants, not to mention healthcare workers are female, Tory cuts to these areas would take employment away from women. It's the same old Tory story, need to save money and jobs? Women and children first!

Just listened to Gordon's speech to Citizens UK in full - now THAT's big society, Dave.

I'm pissed off with our local party because I rang the office a couple of weeks ago to offer to stuff envelopes or something, anything, and although they really need help they don't open in the evenings and I work all day so - no help. NOT OPEN IN THE EVENINGS? DON'T YOU KNOW THERE'S AN ELECTION ON? Safe labour seat. (well, it was).

Go out and vote, whatever the weather.
Labour voters traditionally stay in when it's raining, Wilf. My dad used to go out in his car with umbrellas and drive people to the polling station.
