Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

Well you know how to get my attention

What people said after Jeremy Corbyn revealed he couldn't recognise Ant and Dec:

"If you think that’s tough, try getting him to recognise Ant n’ Semitism."

(Someone has started a thread suggesting British kids riot like the French)

Absolutely stupid that thread is.

It is a start though not denying they have a long way to go.

Oh, I agree it's a start.
There are some very good people in the C of E. All power to them.

That is an excellent statement.

Great news about Europe declaring Muslim Brotherhood as terrorists.

Great news about Europe declaring Muslim Brotherhood as terrorists.

I can't see it happening here no matter which party is in charge. We have been the western home of the Brotherhood for many years.

They have to much influence in the UK and too many people working for the interest of the Brotherhood. So many charities and organisations are just fronts for them.

They influence media, the civil service which means various government departments, NHS and a lot of educational institutions.

Totally agree with you, plus it's hard to discuss it because it's shut down by cries of racism. Some ignorant people believe the very term Muslim Brotherhood is racist! They've no idea. The very same who swallow Hamas propaganda.

Agreed. Excellent statement and I agree. This is being done in the name of their religion. More Imams have a duty to say not in my name to these terrorists. Especially considering the sheer number of Muslims killed by them. But we have mosques funded and radicalised by Iran

Andy Burnham has called on Polanski to reverse the motion and ensure it is not Green Party policy.

In his first comment on the row, Burnham said it was “completely wrong” for the party to support the motion and that this showed “terrible judgment”.

He said the motion effectively ruled out a two state solution between Israel and Palestine.

“For that reason it shouldn’t be supported in any way, shape or form” he told reporters while on a visit to Berlin.

Well, he waited long enough to do that.

Douglasmummy · 09/10/2026 06:44

I think he should have gone further than that. The motion is likely to be illegal and lead to British people being harassed on the grounds of their religious beliefs. He still concentrated on Palestine rather than the threat to British people. He must have approved Bridget Phillipsons statement but didn't say anything himself.

PaperPanama · 09/10/2026 07:00

British Jews are already harassed due to their beliefs. For all their hot air about not discriminating against Jews Green Party members, the Green Party has just given racists the green light to make it worse. Why else were anti-Israel demonstrators protesting aggressively at the Board of Deputies of British Jews?

Burnham, like so many people whose position is dependent upon popularity a vote is a coward who doesn’t want to change the status quo that got him his position. Jews don’t count.

He did.

I can't help thinking he waited a while to see which way the wind was blowing on it. Once enough other people stood up to condemn it, he decided to take a stand himself.

The timing helped him.

"Not appropriate to comment until after polls closed in Holborn St P", I'll bet folding money.

Agree with this. He also failed to rule out a coalition with the Greens when asked.

I meant that he might have used the excuse that he couldn't comment while campaigning and voting were still in progress.

The Lib Dem and Tory leaders commented during that time, but then they had no real hope in H & St P.

That is concerning. What possible reason would he not? If he does so badly that the Lib Dems can't even save him and he needs to rely on The Greens then he would have lost so badly his position would be untenable. So them rejecting a 2 state solution is the worst thing about this? Very weak. I'm disappointed as I would vote for him but womens rights will be absolutely trashed with The Greens. It will be their only demand in a coalition.

Because he’ll probably still take them to remain in power.

Agreed. A Labour party possibly forming a coalition with the Green party is a turn off for anyone who is disgusted by antisemitic, or any woman that cares about women's rights.

Burnham really needs to make it clear he would never form a coalition with the Green party as they currently are. That could be an incentive for them to try to sort out the problems currently plaguing the party before the next General Election.

I hope those arrested get the book thrown at them, I really do. I'm not usually vindictive, but this whole situation has got out of hand.

As for that woman with her self-righteous watermelon - what an absolute useful idiot. Performative fool.

She is the organiser of a Palestinian charity that arranges for Palestinians to move to the UK. She is an open terrorist supporter - 3 years ago you were accused of racism for saying the Pro-Pal movement was pro-terror, and we've been boiling frogs since then. It really does genuinely worry me.

Burnham clearly has no principles and didn't want to offend the antisemites by making a statement earlier. He is performatively anti-Israel and doesn't care about the issue.

I think of learning about the Holocaust in school - everyone is shocked that no one said or did anything. But I feel that we are in a parallel situation, and I feel the fear and helplessness that people must have felt then - what to you do, when speaking against it threatens your livelihood, ostracises you, and might not even achieve anything because people will see you as being in the wrong? Even in the Jewish community here, people are conflicted or afraid or feel awkward discussing it - which is no match for the vocal hate of the anti-Israel pro-terror movement.

Yes agree again. He only spoke about the two state solution part. Burnham and Philipson's statement seem to be signalling that if the greens drop that part, all will be well. Its extremely worrying that Burnham has waited this long, said very little, and then failed to rule out a Labour/Green coalition.

I doubt he will distance too much because he aligns with the left and sees it as a left coalition against the right.
