Anne Widdecombe was murdered a couple of days ago, from what we know by being bludgeoned to death. People making merry witticisms or speculating about what fictional detective would solve the crime (etc) should have a really long, hard look at whether they would like a thread like this or the last one about a member of their family.

I wouldn't describe Dartmoor as being full of anything except sheep. I remember it being described as MAMBA land - miles and miles of bugger all.

After spending quite a lot of time there in my youth, I have never heard of anyone living off road kill there! And in any event it would be a fairly brutal, wet and cold place to live for 9 months of the year.

Hmm I know of at least three blokes who fell between the gaps of the so-called MH support system in the UK and ended up living in vans they trawled around Dartmoor when the engine hadn't failed, parking where they could be undisturbed. They liked it precisely because it was MAMBA land!

I suppose the only thing that might have helped Ann or somebody in a similar situation is one of those personal security alarm necklaces or bracelets.

From what I gether, some of them automatically call either an emergency number or some other trusted person's telephone when it detects a fall. My mum has one but I don't think it is as sophisticated as that. I think you have to push the button yourself and how often she actually wears it is another matter.

I'm probably way out of touch and smart watches most likely have some kind of built in personal alarm feature as well, if you set them up right.

Anyway. It's a shame really that I'm even thinking like this. RIP Ann.

Another thing that I've heard - which may very well not be true - is that house insurance won't pay out in the event of a burglary if you haven't properly secured your home. In other words, leaving the window open is asking for it. I've heard this in France though and it could very well not apply to the UK.

If so they'd be duty bound to release the image of, what is, a very dangerous man, whilst warning the public not to approach him.

In order to describe (they've said he's white) their latest suspect, they must have CCTV or such footage/images of said latest suspect. So why aren't they releasing it, and advising people not to approach him?

One wonders if the outcome of this will involve yet another example of the police having to refer themselves to the watchdog.

I don’t believe they are duty bound??

I thought they only needed to release images to the public to either help with their investigation or to protect the public.

If they know who he is they don’t need the public’s help and they must not think he’s a threat to the general public and in this situation people knowing who he is may make him more of a risk.

Okay...whatever 🦇💩 you believe.

I still maintain a female in her late 70s couldn't fight of a male in his teens, twenties, thirties...etc

But that’s not what you said. You’ve toned it down now. And of course I agree.

JoshLymanSwagger · 11/07/2026 18:58

dapsnotplimsolls · 11/07/2026 18:31

Police are now saying they're not releasing any new information.

They're probably still recovering from my KitKat comments earlier...

These people are deranged. Normalised derangement if you will, given the world wide web affords them ready access to kindred spirits; gives them the impression their disordered/vile behaviour is normal.

In all honesty - I have been fire fighting some really shitty stuff on this thread - I can't remember what I posted.

So lets just agree to agree. 🍻 🥵

Evisam · 11/07/2026 19:03

I hope the ring doorbell footage is not like the Nancy Guthrie case where the police are not able to identify a suspect. Still can't believe they have not found the 84 year old.

Some posters have been flagging some properly offensive comments to MN all day.
Including what you've just said tbh.

I'm hot. I'm bothered.

Doesn't mean I am mocking the death of AW.

Thank You.

JoshLymanSwagger · 11/07/2026 19:07

@JasmineMac Have they said the current suspect is a white man, or was that yesterday?
Not being goady - just honestly not seen any comments around a new possible suspect.

I had contact with her through work many years ago and found her to be nice enough. That said, she was spreading deeply divisive views in the years before she died for profit. I find it concerning the media is presenting her views as her having "strong principles" when in reality they were discriminatory.

I have to really disagree that Ann would have accepted payment to air views that she did not hold herself. Say what you like about the woman but I do not believe, for 1 second that she could be bought. No way!!

A travel size aerosol of hairspray or similar is something I carry in my pocket if walking alone. Never had to use it, and I'd probably be overcome before I could retrieve it, but it's a comfort to know it's there. I haven't told anyone I do this, I think they would laugh at me. But I'm in my sixties now and not gym supple enough anymore to fight a man off. But I don't think any woman is really strong enough to do that either.

You would be better to have a aeosol of water so if it is used on you , you know its water But your attacker would not

but to be fair i don't know of any survivors who woukd have benefited from any weapon they sll say it happened so quickly

dapsnotplimsolls · 11/07/2026 19:10

I don't think AW would have agreed to wear an emergency pendant.

They are if its deemed necessary and proportionate to protect the public. If they have an image of someone I'd suggest warning the public not to approach him is entirely necessary.

If they do know who it is, but he's in hiding, then they should absolutely be releasing the image. They have no way whatsoever of knowing he doesn't present a danger to the general public.

If it turns out they've merely used 'white' as a description on little to no evidence, there will be serious questions asked.

Yes there is in the UK. It’s illegal for men and woman to carry pepper spray and carries a sentence of up to 10 years.

I know this. What I meant was if mace was in the U.K. (legally) then a man can get it just as easy as a woman can.

Viviennemary · 11/07/2026 19:14

I read on some pop up newsfeed a man in hiking clothes was seen entering her house late at night. Dont know if thats at all reliable though.

Yes, latest update on BBC has police saying they're looking for a 'white male'.

At least she was always very willing to discuss her views and to accept and respect that other people had very different ones.

In very stark contrast to the likes of that odious TRA who tweeted how happy he was that she'd died and that he hoped she'd experienced a lot of pain in the process - the sort who scream '#nodebate' and seek to silence and cancel anybody who disagrees with them.

I had never heard of that disgusting person Herbert until yesterday. What a vile human they are!

No. Probably not. Perhaps for fall safety reasons after she'd had a scary moment and really, the average person shouldn't have to feel like they have to booby trap themselves at all times in case of attack.

You may argue that she wasn't an average person because of her involvement in politics but even so.

So they must either not know who it is or not think he’s a risk to the public.

Most murderers aren’t a risk to the general public.

On average at least 1 person is killed everyday in the UK and they don’t release the images of each perpetrator unless they need help with their enquiries or they’re a danger to others.

If you live locally I wouldn’t be worried about your own safety in this case.

Have you considered that a lot of CCTV footage is not good enough quality to identify specific individuals but is good enough to give an idea of things like skin colour, height, etc?

Personally I like snapping a Kit Kat in half the wrong way.

Alan and his mam wouldn't entertain a KitKat! 😨 Snapped the wrong way or otherwise
