Is the murder of Renee Good by Trump's immigration police news in the U.K.?

As Trump keeps pursuing this insane violent crackdown, supposedly on illegal immigrants, but actually much beyond that - A woman in Minneapolis was shot, in her car. Luckily there is a ton of video, but Trump's people are already maligning her, and it's a horrible tragedy.

@draft123 speaks for me tbh. It’s absolutely humiliating that a stupid squabble in another country automatically gets to lead our news for two whole days. It might or might not be interesting, but ultimately it’s nothing to do with us. Ridiculous that people here are being made stressed over it.

It's not simply a "stupid squabble" though, is it. Or have you not been paying attention?

And now if you want to go and start a thread about Iran I will happily post on it.

“stupid squabble ”??? A woman was murdered in cold blood and it was all caught on camera. In a country now led by a dictator who openly admits that he has no limits to his power including the rule of law. I’d say that’s pretty fundamental.

Frequency · 13/01/2026 10:50

"We" do care, as evidenced by the extensive news coverage and up to now 4 threads, which are mostly condemning the actions of ICE. The few vocal supporters ICE does have appear to be American, not British.

And did you really just describe the killing of a mother of three as a "stupid squabble" on a parenting site?

soddingspiderseason · 13/01/2026 10:52

draft123 · 13/01/2026 09:24

Yes but we don't care

Who is ‘we’? The vast majority of women care.

Allswellthatendswelll · 13/01/2026 10:57

We do care! When America sneezes we catch a cold and there are some people here who have been radicalised online by the Maga stuff.

Luckily at the moment I think that kind of incident would be very unlikely to happen here. I'm very glad we don't have armed police as a rule!

Ironically if it did happen here I'm sure all the right wing nut jobs would completely their mind about "Starmers police state".

I would find it far more humiliating that some people don't care about a woman being shot in the face simply because she lived in another country. Whether it is "interesting" or not doesn't matter, where is your empathy?

Even if you don’t give a shit about women being shot in the face then you are naïve in the extreme to not think that what’s happening in the US is going to impact the UK. Impact the whole world in fact..

Mollydoggerson · 14/01/2026 08:52

It's inhumane.

Combine ICE activities with what's happening in Venezuela and the rhetoric around Greenland. Trump appointing kimberley as ambassador to Greece, snooping around the oil reserves around Crete.

Annihilation of USAID and the terrible loss of life that will follow.

The AI impact on all low level admin jobs, the impact on shares and the economy.

The world order has shifted.

We are headed to increasing conflict, entrenchment, fragile alliances and I suspect a global recession.

We are living through very strange times.

A ‘stupid squabble’ is something that happens over Monopoly or emptying the dishwasher.
This woman was shot dead by her own country’s law enforcement on behalf of its government.
Everything that’s happening in the US has some sort of knock-on for us, including legitimising the sort of twaddle that is espoused by our own swivel-eyed loons.

MsAmerica · 12/01/2026 21:01

Good! (No pun intended.) I'm glad so many of you are aware of it.

There is the hilarious bitter irony of Trump declaring he's willing to take military action against Iran to protect their protesters, while he attacks American protesters here.

The bigger irony is him defending and pardoning the 6th January insurgents while calling Renee a terrorist.

GeneralPeter · 14/01/2026 14:38

Yes. It should be much smaller news than it is here.

The US is important, and it’s good to know what’s going on there. Ditto it’s good to know what’s making the headlines in China, Russia, India, other important places.

It’s bad if our sense of the most burning injustices just follows along from what’s newsworthy in the US.

(I’d say the same if the politics of the parties were reversed).

Seeing as the US is hurtling towards being a dictatorship, if arguably not already there, while threatening to invade Greenland, then I think it should be pretty much at the top of the news.

Yes, and also saying he didn’t incite the violence of January 6, and then shortly after turning around and pardoning those who committed it.

The US is very important. I think Trump is appalling figure. Greenland and other things are forcing a fundamental rethinking of the Western world.

I think your post illustrates one of the dangers of absorbing US-brain as our own lens on the news.

Anyone who can describe the US system of government as even 'arguably' as a dictatorship has lost perspective. Ditto the rightists who call everything 'Marxist' because that's what they say in America.

That makes it harder to understand the world, and therefore to actually confront the many challenges, from many angles and countries and issues, that we face.

You somehow missed the multiple threads on here?

Unfortunately, a lot of British leftists are completely obsessed with America, while knowing next to nothing about it.

Tiresome …

I heard that quote from him and was like 'Sir Hiss' from Disney's Robin Hood, when Little John kissed off all the King's ring jewels. So hypocritical.

We've heard about him calling her a 'Fucking bitch' wasn't it? This strongly points towards it being murder for me but are the courts going to prosecute him? I said to my DH that it was really weird how he positioned himself in front of her car the way he did; almost like he was willing it to happen. Combined with his words after the shooting, it sounds like she wound him up and he engineered an excuse to shoot her in the face.

Absolutely appalling and of course, the statement made by Trump straight after was full of untruths. He just says what he fucking likes and hopes 'headology' (as Granny Weatherwax calls it) will make us imagine it to be so.

I'm not wildly well-informed by this, but I was told in another forum site that ICE agents have immunity. I don't know for sure if that's true.

Or perhaps the bigger irony is his behaving viciously and murderously toward Democratic American protesters while encouraging and defending Iranian protesters.

If there were multiple threads in the Politics forum specifically citing this in their title line, yes, I did miss them.
I can't fault Brits, neither righties nor lefties, for not knowing much about America, as Americans aren't exactly knowledgeable about other countries themselves.

It's huge news, I m in ireland, and can think of little else for the last 5 days. It's horrific.

Thankfully there are plenty of people brave enough to protest. It's Natzi Germany, all over again. It must be horrifying living through it.

Stay safe.

Yes, but we need protest numbers like Iran! Now, THAT's brave.

Excuse me, but:

First, it's not a "squabble." It's an unconstitutional crack-down, including murder, that is un-Constitutional.

Second, it most definitely "has to do" with you. As Trump threatens country after country, do you think the U.K. will be immune? As right-wingers try to get control of various countries, do you think the U.K. will be immune?

You should attend to it as a frightening cautionary tale.

Oh, of course if you prefer a country where the rights of ordinary people are trampled and lawless governmental thugs can murder people with impunity, perhaps you'd be happier elsewhere, on another continent.

The view in my neck of the woods (SW UK) is that ICE are completely out of control, and that Trump has been even worse for the US than w3 anticipated. There is no way in the world I would go to US atm. Once Trump’s dead and gone, well gone, I might consider 8t, but no matter how much I’d like to go to Grand Ole Opry or anywhere else over there, not going now.
