The Fabian Society

Is the UK electorate aware that they voted for a Labour government, behind which, is a left wing think tank called The Fabian Society?

TFS advocates gradualist, reformist and democratic means in a journey towards radical ends.

The Fabian Society’s objectives for the rest of the parliament are to:

  1. Support the Labour party to win the next general election and return to government
  2. Secure the adoption of transformative Fabian policy proposals in the next UK Labour manifesto and in policy platforms at every level
  3. Help to build a strong, united and diverse Labour movement
  4. Strengthen the capabilities, activism and reach of the society

I strongly suggest that people seek to understand the real influence that TFS has on this Labour government - it provides an explanation for the last 15 months.

Some commentators are making the point that Starmer is much more Left Wing than we thought. Through his membership of the Haldane Society. Socialist Lawyers club.
His support for Trotskyist campaigner Michel Pablo.
The old way of having a revolution is not relevant, out goes Corbyn and Abbott. The new way is disruption via Campaigns for Net Zero and Gender politics.
Forming a one Party state based on Lawyers like himself and The Attorney General.
Try Peter Hitchens or David Starkey. I know they can be flaky but NOT all the time. You Tube. Also YouTube Niall Ferguson.

The ghost of George Bernard Shaw is stalking Whitehall and we have nothing to lose but our breakfast bacon.

Mad as a box of frogs. I hope you stop by the politics threads more often OP.

They used to be portrayed as pipe smokers in Harris Tweed suits and clumpy shoes, probably vegetarian. The men similarly but with a degree.

My turn to LOL.

This government is probably the most deceitful and incompetent government in recent history.

Reeves is about to gaslight the country again later today, in an attempt to soften up people for enormous tax rises.

Look at the threads on MN, read the room.

People have had enough.

I can't take this seriously.

Like MN is representative of all women in the UK 😂

Communist ideas? Hahahahahaha

Rachel Reeves hangs portrait of communist hero of Ellen Wilkinson, a founding member of the British Communist Party adorns her office in No 11.

I did understand that the Fabian Society is really old. Wasn't George Bernard Shaw a member? Its referred to in literature anyway.

Yeah, for me it's always been a group of woolly and ineffectual academics- Bertrand Russell, Leonard Woolf, Beatrice and Sidney Webb. Never thought anyone took it seriously as an influence. The Millibands perhaps.

patooties · 08/12/2025 17:12

lol at Torsten being a commie 🤣

Dorisbonson · 04/11/2025 04:04

I don't think Fabian's are the problem. Marxist Communist ministers like Torsten Bell in the Treasury driving tax policy based on communism rather than what's good for the country is more dangerous.

You are right about the underlying problem, the labour party care more about communist ideas and academic/ideological concepts of fairness than they care about British people and the effectiveness of their policies.

Communists Labour are not

That's an interesting perspective. She was a communist party member in her youth but definitely a socialist through adulthood.

Agreed. Despite the pp trying to suggest otherwise with the Telegraph article!

You know they're not the same thing, right? Or shall we start lumping the Tories and reform in the same club too?

When I see folk labelled as Communist when they obviously aren't, I wonder what people think the opposite of communism to be.

Yup, I know on the Overton window concept of far left and far right it's Fascism that is seen as the opposite, but I don't think it is.

Given that communism is nominally an economic model where the proletariat own the means of production, the state owning it really, would the opposite not be pure capitalism, where the state owns no means of production, all of it being privately owned. Verging on libertarianism I suppose.

If that definition is true, and given that I am not aware of any UK politician advocating for zero state ownership of anything, NHS, roads, military etc, then does it not follow that every UK politician has a bit of "left" in them ?

Do you think China is a communist country?

We’re not discussing China.

Exactly. It's quite a stretch in a thread about the Fabian society!

Well you wrote the essay about Communism ;/)
