Is the growing intrest in the reform party a sign that racism is growing in this country and has now become acceptable.

The thing that most worries me is that, if Reform are taking their stance from the Republicans under Trump, then they won't respect democracy when they get in, and we won't be able to vote them out again.

I don't know how many of their supporters have thought about it from this angle - I suspect most of them haven't.

Basically, we have no evidence that Reform will act as a loyal opposition - as the Tories, Labour, or any other major party would - and lots of evidence they will be looking to subvert the institutions so they can never be kicked out, by an election at least.

They make alot of flaunting that they are willing to make the same sorts of decisions as Trump's Republicans. Well, if they say that, we should assume they are also willing to undermine democracy.

Basically, if you have, or are considering voting Reform, just think on that. Are you sure you would not be helping to take away the vote from everyone else, and yourself, ultimately. If you know someone thinking to vote Reform, please bring this up with them.

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/05/2025 01:42

Donald Trump is single handedly destroying right wing politics in the democratic world. Reform councils will fail even biglier than Trump because Nigel Farage has no idea, no loyalty, no work ethic and no trust in Reform representatives.

I think it's more a sign of complete disgust and disillusionment with the main parties

This.

Raynor has extended the policy of selling off school playing fields. She could have ended the policy but instead has extended to 2030! Got to get those houses built, and seemingly happy to do so at expense of state school kids!!

I am a primary school teacher in a leafy area in outer London. We have a lovely school field. However, we are no longer able to use it except for Sports Day as we no longer have the staff to allow children on it, due to cuts made by the last government. I'd much rather the school sell it off and employ some TAs, and even bring class sizes below 33.
And you know what, I don't blame migration for this. And I'm so glad we're not in neighbouring Kent- I can't imagine what schools will be like once the Reform council cuts the SEND budget becase Nigel Farage believes too many kids hae SEND.

OneFunBrickNewt · 04/05/2025 07:22

Lots of fickle voters in Britain. Labour inherited a massive mess. Not only did the Tories fuck up the economy, public services and trust in politicians, but they refused to acknowledge this. Labour, led by a decent man, have been left a massive job to rectify this. The only way they can do this is by taking tough decisions. The Winter Fuel Allowance was a benefit paid for based on age- so it meant that Charles in Buckingham Palace got it as he's a pensioner, and my parents got it. They've just come back from staying in one of South East Asia's nicest hotels, and are planning their next trip to India. In short, they didn't need it, and often donated it to either charity, or my family.
Unfortunately, the country couldn't afford to keep paying this non-means tested benefit, which was a Tory bribe to pensioners to vote for them. So it was cut to just the neediest people. Likewise changes to PIP payments- not what most Labour politiicans went into politics to do, but there's no alternative as the country was fucked by Liz Truss and colleagues.
This has nothing to do at all with migration. Britain takes less migrants per capita than many other countries in Europe and worldwide. The easiest way to stop te boats tomorrow is to eastablish safe and legal migration routes from safe and legal migration centres in Europe. Most of the people arriving here by boat are granted asylum- which is pretty tricky given you have to convine a decision maker you are genuine- so are in no way illegal. And it's not illegal to claim asylum in the first place. Why the government isn't standing up to the lies and dog whistle nonsense spouted relentessley by the Daily Mail, I just don't know.
It's pleasing to see that at least in Canada and Australia common sense has prevailed with their elections.
I think a lot of people are going to find out that far right, dog whistle rhetoric doesn't get the bins taken out, doesn't help if your child has SEND, and their will be a lot of voter regret. In the meantime, the boring decency and unfashionable work ethic of Starmer will slowly but surely demonstrate that he is a safe pair of hands for another term in goverment.

Who has blamed migration for school playing fields?

Buzyizzy217 · 04/05/2025 07:49

The country is not full!
We have 100,000’s job vacancies which need filling and I’m disgusted at the lies.
Sm has become open day for all the racists. I am second generation immigrant and appalled at the way we are being treated.
I do hope these vile bigots never need our NHS.

Buzyizzy217 · 04/05/2025 07:51

They won’t get in. Watch these councils that they’re now in control of completely fail. Guaranteed. UKIP bankrupted Thanet when they won it. Same corrupt bunch, different name.

The voice of reason in most respects.
unfortunately, the PIP payments being withdrawn for 87% of us is nothing but punishment. Millions of disabled are going to be left unable to pay for care, yet not able to wash and dress and feed themselves. It’s humiliating and a disgrace. We go through (in my case) 3 hours interrogation, which leaves many of us almost suicidal. If every disabled person and their families votes elsewhere in 2029, Starmer and co are toast.
Bring the scoring to 3 and it would be about right, 4 is political suicide.

Twinstudy · 04/05/2025 08:01

Yes. Being concerned about uncontrolled immigration isn't inherently racist in itself.

Voting for a bunch of racists however undoubtedly is.

Hopefully there will be a modification of this policy- no-one wants to read of people forced into dire situations, especially under a Labout government.
I think the point I was trying to make is that the vitriol aimed at Starmer by the right is misplaced- he is trying to undo the mess caused by the Tories and unforuntately the only way to do that, is by making some tough and unpopular decisions.

CP1978 · 03/05/2025 07:26

Exactly!! And the fact they are concreting over every single bit of green space possible...because the Country is overpopulated! Do you want to live in a Country with not one single bit of Countryside or nature left? Because I certainly don't, it's what made this Country beautiful but we are rapidly losing it to cram in as many identical housing estates as possible.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the housing estates too, but we are an incredibly long way of losing "every bit of green space possible" and "not one sk Glen bit of nature or countryside left"

Mind your use of the word "fact"

But we aren't talking about the DM! You have taken my link to an article about school playing fields and conflated it with immigration and now the Daily Mail.... Yet Reform voters are the 'thick' ones? OK
And FYI I don't vote Reform but you are obviously as bigoted as you claim they are.

Denmark claims to have reduced Asylum claims by 90% by banning burkhas and refusing benefits to migrants who don’t learn their language.

https://mol.im/a/14675845

I read this and other articles and studies on this.
They've achieved this by strip searching migrants for valuables the moment they arrive in Denmark, including taking family heirlooms and jwelery off people if they contain precious metals. They say that people must learn Danish- only possible in Denmark- but not allowing them the means or chance to do so. They also deport people to dangerouns countries where even the Daily Mail admits many will face harm upon return (Syria isn't suddenly 100% safe.) They also split families up and- not mentioned in the article- have forced fully integrated migrant children out of school just before important exams equivalent to GCSEs and A'Levels to ready them for deportation to unsafe countries they barely remember.

It's a shame the internet is full of trolls like yourself throwing insults around- I'm not 'thick' or 'bigoted' just because I disagree with you. It's why I took a break from Mumsnet.
As you well know, the far right and Reform often talk about this country being 'full' and link that to migration, and the need to build extra housing. My point about the playing fields is that if they're not being used, why not build on them? Rather that than in the Green Belt.
The primary school where I work can no longer use the playing fields we have, due to deep and damaging cuts under the previous government. When I started working there, from spring onwards the children would picnic on the playing fields and spend playtime there or in the playground, as they wanted. Now the playing fields are closed, as we do not have the TAs to supervise this anymore. We can't afford them. In fact, many classes in KS2 don't have a TA- only those with named children do based on an EHCP. Reform have said they don't believe in SEND so presumably that will mean no funding for EHCPs- I'm so glad we're a few miles down the road into Kent. I feel sorry for any SEND child in a Kent school who has their EHCP funding withdrawn.

Troll because I disagree with you?
Why is it lefties like you simply can't discuss without throwing out insults? You say you work in a school yet have little critical thinking ability, that's worrying.

And what exactly are Labour doing for SEND kids? Nothing is the answer. Overall school budgets are being cut and they are forcing more SEND kids into mainstream settings + making the process of getting an EHCP harder with the Schools Bill limiting parental ability to appeal decisions!

countingthestar · 04/05/2025 08:32

People behave as though if only Reform could be made to vanish, the country would in some indefinable way become a nicer place. I disagree.

The more impassioned and zealous the attempts to silence Reform, Trump and his like, the more these attempts contribute to a sense of grievance by those who feel the social censure they receive for their opinions actually makes them the oppressed. And this all fuels exactly the kinds of populist movements that are currently popping up all over the western world and have been for some time.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 04/05/2025 08:35

Denmark is in the ECHR. That so, how can they deport people to dangerous countries when at the same time the UK can’t?

You clearly rate Starmer, the issue for him is that he and Reeves have targeted so many groups they’ve lost a lot of support.

Yes, I do, I think he's a decent individual. Certainly compared to Truss and that liar, Johnson. I also thought Theresa May was not a bad person, especially after she apologised for her language on asylum seekers.
I think voters are being fickle and somewhat hypocritical. On the one hand, they want politicans to be honest and not push problems into the long grass. Yet on the other hand, Starmer and Reeves are being honest about the problems they face, and trying to rectify the economy. And they are being punished for it. People want the economy sorted- spending needs to be reduced- yet people seem to think they shouldn't be affected by this, it should be other people who pay. When the Daily Mail and Reform making false claims about what migrants get,and how we are being invaded by people who want to destroy our culture and decamp en masse into five star hotels, no wonder some people actually belive these falshoods and think if we just closed the door, everything would be magically solved.

dubsie · 04/05/2025 08:37

I don't share peoples optimism, personally think it's naive to think that somehow time will convince people that Labour will row this back.

I'll vote Labour because I can see that they are doing some good work and things can't change over night. At the same time there are signals that demonstrate to me that we have failed to show the strength to go our own way. What I mean is will are still Americas lap dog, although I accept there's probably good reason for it. For me it's like an abusive relationship where we get little recognition for our support.

Can Labour pull this back, it's going to be very difficult because of the polarised right, many of which are traditionally labour voters. If anything the win has given them more impetus and my feelings are that it will get worse for Labour and the conservatives.

Unfortunately people see lies as truth thanks to social media and how do you reach people with there fingers in there ears.

We all know that illegal immigration is a problem, the real question is how you deal with it. Certainly putting people into hotels and rentals is so obviously wrong but tents as one reform major has suggested won't work either. My opinion is that the processing should happen within 7 days and then sent back to the country of birthplace by diplomatic flights...the problem is the numbers. There's got to be a solution and id suggest to Starmer that he invites all of the opposition to number 10 to work out a way that everyone is happy with. .....only then can you put this problem to bed

GlobeTrotter2000 · 04/05/2025 08:39

@countingthestar

Since the referendum held 23 June 2016, many posters have attempted to police and block post and posters who do not agree with them.

It’s why I voted reform on 1 May 2025.
