Will Reform win any votes at the local elections?

Despite claims in pp Labour aren’t rejoicing they’re trying to gain back support. Removing citizen rights for some a few weeks ago, spending a huge amount for a deportation video, talk of the Balkans for removal hubs today.

So do you mean they are appealing to Reform voters?

I am not happy with Labour's immigration rhetoric but isn't that what Tory/Reform voters want?

Edited to ask, what do you mean with 'Removing citizen rights for some a few weeks ago'?

I think they’re trying to stop the support going to Reform. I’m not sure it’ll work but they will spend a lot on it.

Tents in winter? Would they be heated ?Will there be running water? A sewage system?

Where will you put these tent cities?

Nope, don't want to make them feel comfortable, wanting them to return to France. Yeah sewage system, basic would do, a pipe straight to the sea, works for the water companies.

So why provide a tent? Just leave them on the beach surrounded by electric fences and armed guards in watch towers

Notonthestairs · 19/04/2025 15:00

Can I ask which beach you have in mind for your camp? Kent? Sussex? Hampshire?

I wonder what the locals would make of untreated sewage rippling around their ankles.

Anyway, it's good to see that we're enjoying all those Brexit benefits that Nigel et. al. promised us.

An increase in asylum seekers as we can no longer send them back to France.

And a return to the filthy beaches and water pollution that we benefited from before the EU made us clean up our backyard.

I can see why you are putting your faith in him to continue delivering.

They won't go to France and you can't have tents on Dover beach, it's unhygienic and dangerous. They also need to be processed because if you're going to send people back to their countries, you need an agreement with that country.

These are human beings by the way. Just reminding you.

The people trying to get to the UK by boat are coming for several reasons. They may speak English, they may have friends or family here, they may think it's easier to get work, they may have no choice as they've paid people smugglers and this is where they're being taken, they may have heard life is better in the UK.

Once the asylum seekers have entered British water, they are Britain's responsibility. France doesn't want them back and as a sovereign nation, can't be forced to take them back.

Thanks @Maitri108 that makes sense.

I suppose what confuses a lot of us, me included, is that a lot of people arriving are not coming from countries who have on going wars, famine etc. Many of them are from Jordan, Pakistan or Romania for example. And the majority are men. If it was loads of women coming from Afghanistan to escape the hell that they’re going through, or Sudan where there is a Genocide happening, I don’t think anyone would have an issue at all with people arriving however and where ever they can.

Its up to those of us who don’t fully understand the political side of the issue to ask these types of questions so we get the legal answer, and make our minds up on which side of the fence we stand I suppose.

As someone who was on the streets for a while as a teenager, with no hostel place or charities able to help due to being massively overstretched , it’s stings a bit seeing people being given a roof over their head, 3 meals a day and access to services that me and others like me couldn’t have access to.

That was 25 ago though, I imagine not much has changed.

Growsomeballswoman · 19/04/2025 15:31

If France is a safe country, why leave that safe country to come to the uK on a dingy?

TopPocketFind · 19/04/2025 15:31

Asylum seekers get no choice where to live, they are not allowed to work whilst their claim is being processed, they receive an allowance of £49.18 per week for food, clothing and toiletries. £8.86 if meals are provided

As for the majority are men, it is very much survival of the fittest for making such a dangerous journey.

Build processing centres, basic ones, not hotel style. Bread and water. Keep until processed and deported. Agree with countries to return, bung 'em a few quid if need be.

How much is that going to cost? Where will the money come from?

TalkToTheHand123 · 19/04/2025 15:35

Borrow. It will be worth it in the long run as should become a deterrant. Cheaper than current process.

Many reasons, for example language, family already living here, UK's reputation

There is no 'stay in first safe country' rule, and if there was, France wouldn't be the first safe country they enter.

Maitri108 · 19/04/2025 15:35

@namechangenelly1

The nationality of people coming by boat is:

Afghans were the top nationality arriving by small boat in 2024. Syrians made up the second largest group, followed by people from Iran, Vietnam and Eritrea. These five nationalities accounted for 61% of all small-boat arrivals
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53699511.amp

The reason the majority are men is multifaceted. It's very difficult for women to leave many of these countries as they often can't travel alone or without permission.
The journey is perilous and women are vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking.

The government have actually cut refugee acceptance for Afghans considerably including women.

I don't mind asylum seekers being housed and fed while they wait to have their claims processed. It would be better to offer more help to the homeless rather than deprive people seeking asylum food and shelter.

I think Starmer is discussing with France whether to directly take asylum seekers with a connection with the UK. I also think the government is going to refuse citizenship.

Sometimes processing takes a long time. You can't feed people bread and water, they'd get scurvy for a start.

Bank. Interest and debt will be cheaper than current process of putting them in hotels.
